The South Korean giant has already launched two foldable smartphones and is gearing to launch the third one.</p>
<p>Now, a new patent for foldable smartphone from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> has surfaced online. The patent shows a smartphone that has two folding lines in a clamshell pattern &#8212; each from the top and the bottom of the device.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-326486 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/galaxy-smartphone-dual-fold.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung Galaxy Dual Fold Smartphone Patent" width="1440" height="1030" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/galaxy-smartphone-dual-fold.jpg 1440w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/galaxy-smartphone-dual-fold-300x215.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/galaxy-smartphone-dual-fold-768x549.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/galaxy-smartphone-dual-fold-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/galaxy-smartphone-dual-fold-696x498.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/galaxy-smartphone-dual-fold-1068x764.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/galaxy-smartphone-dual-fold-587x420.jpg 587w" sizes="(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px" /></p>
<p>The bottom part can be folded to the front while the top part can be folded towards the back of the phone. However, from the images, it seems that the device cannot be folded into a completely flat design.</p>
<p>The patent was applied by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-display">Samsung Display</a> in 2018 and it took about one and a half years for it to get approved and published. Once Samsung Display completes the development of such a screen, Samsung Electronics will make a smartphone using the technology.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/08/vietnam-european-union-free-trade-agreement/">Vietnam ratifies European Union free trade agreement to boost the manufacturing sector</a></strong></h6>
<p>But do note that the patent approval doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean that the company will make a smartphone using the same design. In this case, we doubt if the company is planning to launch a smartphone with such design, especially given that the phone cannot be bend into a flat design, making it difficult to use and carry.</p>
<p>However, we do expect to see <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable-smartphone">foldable smartphones</a> in the near future that can be folded twice and give a much better user experience compared to the one showed in this patent application.</p>
<p>Samsung has so far launched Galaxy Fold and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-5g/">Galaxy Z Flip</a> in the market and the company is gearing up to launch the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 in the coming months, as a successor to the company&#8217;s first foldable smartphone.</p>

The South Korean giant has already launched its first foldable smartphone &#8212; <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/20/samsung-galaxy-fold-is-official-dual-displays-dual-batteries-6-cameras-and-a-whopping-1980-price-tag/">Samsung Galaxy Fold</a>. It will be available for purchase in early May.</p>
<p>While Samsung has already patented several types of design for a foldable smartphone, another design has now been published on the Global Design Database of the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office), which was filed by Samsung Electronics in 2017.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-243209 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-render.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung Dual Folding Smartphone" width="1280" height="1280" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-render.jpg 1280w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-render-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-render-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-render-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-render-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-render-270x270.jpg 270w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></p>
<p>The design sketch filed with the patent application shows that the smartphone has a large flexible screen that can be folded twice. When the screen is expanded or unfolded, it turns into a tablet. When the device is folded, there will be a display on both the sides &#8212; front as well as the rear.</p>
<p>Samsung&#8217;s Dual Folding Smartphone design is quite similar to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/12/xiaomi-foldable-smartphone-concept-video/">Xiaomi&#8217;s foldable smartphone</a> that the company has already teased. However, both smartphones differ in terms of thickness. While the Samsung phone is thicker on the sides and thinner in the middle, the Xiaomi smartphone has similar thickness throughout.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-243210 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-patent.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="1245" height="1280" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-patent.jpg 1245w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-patent-292x300.jpg 292w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-patent-768x790.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/samsung-dual-fold-patent-996x1024.jpg 996w" sizes="(max-width: 1245px) 100vw, 1245px" /></p>
<p>To prevent the display from bending when the entire screen is in use, Samsung has placed a support in the middle, along the entire axis of the screen. In the folded position, the support falls nicely between the two display parts.</p>
<p>The renders of the Samsung Dual Folding Smartphone, created by LetsGoDigital, shows that there are no screen edges and it has a full-screen display. Thus, it&#8217;s not yet known how the South Korean smartphone maker is planning to place the camera sensor and where.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong>Read More: </strong><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/26/samsung-galaxy-fold-will-head-to-asia-and-europe-with-snapdragon-855-instead-of-an-exynos-cpu/"><strong>Samsung Galaxy Fold will head to Asia and Europe with Snapdragon 855 instead of an Exynos CPU</strong></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>With many details missing in the renders, such as ports and sensors, it&#8217;s possible that the design is at a very early stage. However, Samsung has already indicated that it plans to launch a foldable smartphone every year &#8212; tying it with the cycle of its existing flagship line of S-series and Note-series.</p>
