With raytracing promos making rounds, significant performance boosts were expected at least in the GPU department. However, new numbers from analyst TechAltar will push Exynos fans into a world of disappointment. They reveal not only that the Exynos 2200 GPU is only marginally better than its predecessor, but the CPU is barely any faster either.</p>
<p>According to TechAltar (via <a href="https://wccftech.com/exynos-2200-abysmal-cpu-gpu-performance-vs-exynos-2100/?&amp;beta=1">Wccftech</a>), the octa-core CPU belonging to the latest SoC from <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/Samsung">Samsung</a> is only 5% faster compared to the cores in the Exynos 2100. This is obviously way below expectations &#8212; new-gen flagship SoCs typically bring about at least 15-20% improved performance and the Exynos 2200 is not even close to such figures.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">The Exynos 2200 numbers we got yesterday (vs. 2100) :<br /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.1.0/72x72/1f53c.png" alt="🔼" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> 5% for CPU<br /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.1.0/72x72/1f53c.png" alt="🔼" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> 17% for GPU <br /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.1.0/72x72/1f53c.png" alt="🔼" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> 115% for NPU </p>
<p>No wonder they tried to cancel the dedicated Exynos launch event</p>
<p>&mdash; TechAltar (@TechAltar) <a href="https://twitter.com/TechAltar/status/1491454363923279873?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 9, 2022</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>Still, the blunder could have been forgivable had the chip made up for the shortcoming in its CPU through the AMD RDNA2-based Xclipse 920 GPU. When one mentions AMD, the company&#8217;s extensive and powerful desktop GPU lineup comes to mind. Surely, the Samsung-AMD partnership must&#8217;ve reaped great benefits?</p>
<p>Nope, because the same numbers claim that the GPU on the Exynos 2200 is only 17% faster compared to the one on the Exynos 2100.</p>
<p>This leaves nothing but the NPU, and thankfully, this unit has proven to be a true upgrade unlike the other two. A boost of <span class="css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0">115% over the previous generation means that the NPU should result in faster processing times when it comes to operations like image processing.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-438160 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2.jpeg?x44794" alt="Samsung Exynos 2200 Chipset" width="1000" height="980" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2.jpeg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2-300x294.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2-768x753.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2-696x682.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2-429x420.jpeg 429w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>But the question remains if this will translate to real-world performance improvements. TechAltar has pointed out that Samsung has kept performance metrics in the dark and even tried to cancel the dedicated Exynos launch event. This obviously means nothing good and Samsung could just be trying to hide its latest chip&#8217;s shortcomings.</p>
<p>All in all, Exynos looks to have been beaten by Snapdragon once again. &#8220;Qualcomm already had a better GPU and they made 50% improvements vs last gen, so they actually widened their lead, it seems,&#8221; says TechAltar.</p>

This is the same chipset that the company was <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/30/samsungs-exynos-2200-flagship-chipset-will-be-announced-on-january-1-2022/">set to unveil</a> on 11th January but got delayed.</p>
<p>The announcement of this new chipset from the South Korean giant pretty much confirms that there will be Exynos-powered variants of the Galaxy S22 lineup next month, putting the rumors to rest that Samsung is ditching the Exynos chipset this time.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-438160 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2.jpeg?x44794" alt="Samsung Exynos 2200 Chipset" width="1000" height="980" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2.jpeg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2-300x294.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2-768x753.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2-696x682.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Samsung-Exynos-2200-2-429x420.jpeg 429w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>The South Korean giant says that the Exynos 2200 is a newly designed processor, manufactured using the company&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/4nm">4-nanometer EUV node</a>. It packs an octa-core CPU design and uses Armv9 CPU cores.</p>
<p>There are three CPU clusters &#8212; a single Cortex-X2 flagship core, three Cortex-A710 big core, and four Cortex-A510 little cores. Further, the chipset comes with a Samsung Xclipse GPU based on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/amd">AMD</a> RDNA 2 architecture which the company says will offer a &#8220;console-level&#8221; gaming experience in smartphones.</p>
<p>The Samsung Xclipse graphics processing unit will offer advanced features like hardware-accelerated ray tracing and variable rate shading. Ray tracing simulates how light physically behaves in the real world inside the game while variable-rate shading can lower the shading rate in areas of the game to optimize <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/gpu">GPU</a> workload.</p>
<p>It also comes with some other technologies such as advanced multi-IP governor (AMIGO) that enhance overall performance and efficiency. It manages power efficiency to reduce battery drain for high-resolution games.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-425316 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200.png?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="935" height="514" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200.png 935w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200-300x165.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200-768x422.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200-696x383.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200-764x420.png 764w" sizes="(max-width: 935px) 100vw, 935px" /></p>
<p>The chipset also comes with an upgraded <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ai">AI</a> thanks to the new NPU. It can be used with the image signal processor to support taking more realistic pictures. The ISP supports 108MP in single camera mode and offers 4K HDR and 8K video recordings.</p>
<p>As for communication, the Samsung Exynos 2200 comes with a fast 3GPP Release 16 <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/5g">5G modem</a> that supports sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrum bands. There&#8217;s E-UTRAN New Radio – Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) which utilizes both 4G LTE and 5G NR signals and can boost the speed up to 10Gbps.</p>
<p>For security, it also comes with Integrated Secure Element (iSE) to store private cryptographic keys as well as to play a role as RoT (Root of Trust). The company adds that an inline encryption HW for UFS and DRAM has been reinforced.</p>
<p>Samsung has said that the Exynos 2200 is currently in mass production. While it has not been explicitly confirmed, this chipset will be powering the brand&#8217;s upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s22-5g/">Galaxy S22</a> series flagship smartphones that are expected to get officially launched on 8th February, along with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon-8-gen-1">Snapdragon 8 Gen 1</a>-powered models.</p>

There are reports that three top-of-the-line chips which will be debuting in some of this year’s flagship smartphones could be having overheating problems. The chips are the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>’s Exynos 2200, and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek</a>’s Dimensity 9000, which are all top-end super-functional chips of their various manufacturers.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/MediaTek-Dimensity-9000.jpeg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-426031" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/MediaTek-Dimensity-9000.jpeg?x44794" alt="MediaTek Dimensity 9000" width="4949" height="2775" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/MediaTek-Dimensity-9000.jpeg 4949w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/MediaTek-Dimensity-9000-300x168.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/MediaTek-Dimensity-9000-768x431.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/MediaTek-Dimensity-9000-1024x574.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/MediaTek-Dimensity-9000-696x390.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/MediaTek-Dimensity-9000-1068x599.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/MediaTek-Dimensity-9000-749x420.jpeg 749w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/MediaTek-Dimensity-9000-1920x1077.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 4949px) 100vw, 4949px" /></a></p>
<p>Taiwanese company TSMC is the producer of the Dimensity 9000 while Samsung Foundry assembled both the Exynos 2200 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. All three chips are produced using the 4nm node process and there had been some tweets by a few tipsters pointing to the presence of the overheating problem in these top-end chips. The leaks related to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 which was observed to overheat when put through the paces in the Motorola Edge X30, one of the few models sporting the flagship chip.</p>

<p>TSMC has a superior 4nm process than Samsung Foundry, hence the Dimensity 9000 could perform better and experience less overheating than the other two chips. Although the views by the tipsters are not definitive, it remains to be seen how the demand for these high-end chips pans out this year. The global chip shortage is still projected to persist beyond the first half of 2022.</p>

These chipsets will be seen in flagship phones next year, and in fact, some newly launched phones are already using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. Now, it seems like it&#8217;s Samsung&#8217;s turn as today, it has officially revealed that its next Exynos processor dubbed <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/exynos-2200">Exynos 2200</a> will be announced in early January 2022.</p>
<h2><strong>Samsung Exynos 2200 Release Date and Specs </strong></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-425316 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200.png?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="935" height="514" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200.png 935w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200-300x165.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200-768x422.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200-696x383.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/exynos-2200-764x420.png 764w" sizes="(max-width: 935px) 100vw, 935px" /></p>
<p>The Exynos 2200, Samsung&#8217;s in-house processor for flagship phones will be announced on January 11, 2022. The company has teased the new chipset with the hashtag #PlaytimeIsOver hinting at its performance. But unfortunately, the company has not revealed any explicit details about the processor.</p>
<p>What we know is that the company won&#8217;t be using a 4nm process like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, but it may have the same 5nm process as seen in the Exynos 2100. This time around, the new Exynos 2200 will drive graphics from AMD&#8217;s RDNA2 GPU which is seen in PC and consoles. That said, it will come with impressive features like ray-tracing and variable rate shading.</p>

<p>The Exynos 2200 will be an octa-core chipset with one Cortex-X2 CPU core, three Cortex-A710 CPU cores, and four Cortex-A510 CPU cores. It is also expected to have an improved 5G modem, better image signal processing, and enhanced  AI processing.</p>
<p>It is evident that the Exynos 2200 will be in the upcoming Samsung flagships like the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-s22">Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+</a>, and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-s22-ultra">Galaxy S22 Ultra</a> in some markets. The rest of the markets including India and China will get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 powered  Galaxy S22 units.</p>

One uses the company&#8217;s in-house processor solution called Exynos while the other is powered by Snapdragon chips. The latter is reserved for the US market alone usually, but as it now appears, things might be a bit different with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/11/04/samsung-galaxy-s22-colors-leaked/">Galaxy S22 series</a>.</p>
<p>A <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/samsung-galaxy-s22-ultra-snapdragon/">rumor</a> had been doing rounds previously about Samsung ditching the Exynos variant entirely for the entire S22 lineup and shipping it with processors from Qualcomm instead (<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/11/08/qualcomm-snapdragon-898-launch-30-november/">Snapdragon 898</a> to be precise). These rumors have now been laid to rest by reliable tech blogger Max Weinbach who has confirmed there will still be an Exynos version for certain parts of the world.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">this is absolutely correct. S90_E replaces G9__0</p>
<p>&mdash; Max Weinbach (@MaxWinebach) <a href="https://twitter.com/MaxWinebach/status/1458124157980344324?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 9, 2021</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><a href="https://www.galaxyclub.nl/nieuws/nieuwe-samsung-galaxy-s22-modellen-in-ontwikkeling/">Galaxy Club</a> had previously reported that the African and Asian variants of the Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra will be coming with Snapdragon chips for the first time. The United States will continue to get the Snapdragon variant, while the Exynos 2200 variant will be launched in Korea and the rest of the world. This report sits in line with Max&#8217;s tweet, thus confirming the entire thing.</p>
<p>Another bit worth highlighting here is that Asia and Africa will be getting separate variants of all three phones with separate model numbers, namely SM-S901E, SM-S906E, and SM-S908E. This could mean that there will be other spec differences between them.</p>
<figure id="attachment_420056" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-420056" style="width: 770px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-420056" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/samsung-s22-ultra-smartphone-770x684.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="770" height="684" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/samsung-s22-ultra-smartphone-770x684.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/samsung-s22-ultra-smartphone-770x684-300x266.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/samsung-s22-ultra-smartphone-770x684-768x682.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/samsung-s22-ultra-smartphone-770x684-696x618.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/samsung-s22-ultra-smartphone-770x684-473x420.jpg 473w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-420056" class="wp-caption-text">Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra render by LetsGoDigital</figcaption></figure>
<p>Nevertheless, Qualcomm Snapdragon fans will be thrilled to know that Samsung will be selling more of the Snapdragon variant this time around. Snapdragon variants have, after all, always outperformed their Exynos counterparts whether it comes to performance, battery life, or thermal control.</p>
<p>The only downside will be that the Exynos 2200 will for the first time likely be coming with raytracing support, made possible with the integration of an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/11/10/samsung-clarifies-it-will-not-be-launching-exynos-2200-on-nov-19/">AMD GPU</a>. While it remains to be seen if this will help the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/09/15/upcoming-exynos-2200-chipset-amd-gpu-details-leak/">Exynos 2200</a> outperform the Snapdragon 898 in terms of graphics, an AMD GPU will likely be a significant upgrade over Mali GPUs from the past.</p>

<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>It was <a href="http://gizmochina.com/2021/11/09/samsung-hint-nov-19-launch-exynos-amd-chip/">speculated earlier</a> that the processor may be launched on November 19th from a post on Instagram that read: “With gaming graphics continuing to evolve, let’s show you what entertainment will look like in the future. Everything changes on November 19, 2021.” The post had also included a new &#8216;#EverythingChanges&#8217; tag which many took as a reference to the Exynos 2200.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-424045 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Screenshot-121.png?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="800" height="461" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Screenshot-121.png 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Screenshot-121-300x173.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Screenshot-121-768x443.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Screenshot-121-696x401.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Screenshot-121-729x420.png 729w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></p>
<p>The post was joined by another that seemingly pointed toward the AMD GPU that will be paired with the Exynos 2200. An excerpt from it read, &#8220;With gaming graphics continuing to evolve, let’s show you what entertainment will look like in the future.&#8221;</p>
<p>With references like these and the fact that both posts came from the official &#8216;@samsungexynos&#8217; Instagram handle, most were bound to think that they were related to the upcoming processor. So Samsung&#8217;s tweet denying the link did come as a surprise.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Samsung&#8217;s upcoming Exynos 2200 chip will be paired with an AMD GPU which will be enabling raytracing support. It will will reportedly be built using the company’s 4nm process, and will feature one Cortex-X2 CPU core, three Cortex-A710 CPU cores, and four Cortex-A510 CPU cores.</p>
<p>The chip will likely be making its debut with the upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/11/04/samsung-galaxy-s22-colors-leaked/">Samsung Galaxy S22 series</a> given its flagship status.</p>

<p>According to a recent <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CWCS_xOAj_Z/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Instagram</em> </a>post on the South Korean tech giant&#8217;s @samsungexynos, the rumored <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/exynos-2200/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Exynos 2200</a> SoC might be made official on the 19th of November 2021. The post on Instagram reads &#8220;With gaming graphics continuing to evolve, let’s show you what entertainment will look like in the future. Everything changes on November 19, 2021.&#8221; The social media post even brought in a new &#8220;#EverythingChanges,&#8221; which signifies a big announcement being on the way.</p>
<p>So, this might be an official confirmation for the upcoming next gen Exynos will be announced later this month. In the caption, Samsung adds that &#8220;<span class="" title="Edited">Gaming has come a long way. What we used to deem ‘immersive’, relied on a slew of external factors, like the surrounding environment. But the advancements of semiconductors have changed that – learn how, when we move to our new home on Nov. 19th. Stay tuned.&#8221;</span></p>

<p>While AMD&#8217;s RDNA architecture for graphics is sure to boost gaming performance on new Samsung smartphones that feature this chip, we still don&#8217;t know the finer details. AMD had recently teased certain features like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/10/05/samsung-confirms-ray-tracing-with-exynoss-gpu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ray tracing and variable rate shading</a> earlier this year, but we will still have to wait for an official announcement to know for sure.</p>

The processor, under the Samsung Exynos lineup, will be the most powerful from the South Korean giant.</p>
<p>Now, a <a href="https://www.kedglobal.com/newsView/ked202105090002">new report</a> coming from <em>The Korean Economic Daily</em>, Samsung could also plan to launch a laptop powered by this new chipset. While not yet confirmed, the name of the chipset is likely to be named Exynos 2200.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-195914 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Samsung-Exynos-logo-e1528781791809.png?x44794" alt="Samsung Exynos 9710" width="674" height="452" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Samsung-Exynos-logo-e1528781791809.png 674w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Samsung-Exynos-logo-e1528781791809-300x201.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px" /></p>
<p>This new processor will be powering the upcoming flagship smartphones as well as tablets from Samsung. Now, the rumors suggest that it will also be used to power a laptop, competing against <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-m1">Apple M1 chipset</a> which is now being used for laptops and tablets.</p>
<p>Samsung could be launching a Windows-powered laptop in the second half of this year. However, it&#8217;s noteworthy that this won&#8217;t be the first ARM-based laptop from Samsung as the company has already launched <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/08/samsung-galaxy-book-s-with-snapdragon-8cx-and-windows-10-announced/">Galaxy Book S</a> powered by Snapdragon 8Cx chipset.</p>
<p>But, it will be the first Samsung will be using the same chip to power its laptop as well as smartphones. To be honest, we don&#8217;t expect the South Korean company to launch <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/exynos-2200">Exynos 2200</a>-powered phone anytime soon but there&#8217;s a possibility that next year&#8217;s Galaxy S22 lineup could come equipped with it.</p>
<p>Currently, there&#8217;s no information available about the upcoming new chipset and it&#8217;s too early to know for sure. We expect to know more about it in the coming weeks and months, as the official announcement nears.</p>
