Samsung is bringing one of its flagship AI features to the mid-range segment. According to an official announcement, Samsung will enable AI assistant activation through the side button on select Galaxy A series smartphones. This move aligns with the company’s broader goal of expanding access to AI experiences across device categories.

Gemini AI side button feature to be released for Galaxy A users

Samsung Galaxy A-series to get Gemini AI side button function

Through an upcoming software update, Samsung will allow Galaxy A-series users to launch Gemini, Google’s AI-powered assistant, by simply pressing and holding the side key—functionality that was previously exclusive to the Galaxy S series. This addition builds on Samsung’s earlier introduction of “Awesome Intelligence” for Galaxy A56 5G, Galaxy A36 5G, and Galaxy A26 5G. With Gemini integration, users will be able to perform a wide range of actions using voice commands, from checking calendars and getting birthday gift ideas to finding nearby restaurants.

The AI assistant can also handle cross-app actions. For instance, a user can search for a dinner spot via Google Maps and send the location through Messages—all in a single voice command. The company says this enhancement reflects its continued partnership with Google to deliver meaningful, intuitive AI tools on more affordable devices.

The software update enabling Gemini access via the side button will begin rolling out globally in early May. Devices confirmed to receive the update include the Galaxy A56 5G, A55 5G, A54 5G, A36 5G, A35 5G, A34 5G, A26 5G, A25 5G, A25e 5G, and A24 running One UI 7.
Rounding out our list is Spigen’s Liquid Air case—a fan favorite for combining style and security. Made from flexible TPU, it features Air Cushion Technology that helps absorb shock from impacts. Its matte finish not only adds a touch of sophistication but also improves grip to help prevent drops in the first place.

Raised bezels around the screen and camera offer added protection, and the case is fully compatible with wireless and reverse charging. It’s sold on Amazon, Spigen’s official store, and select tech retailers.

Price: $29.99

Final Thoughts

Finding the right case for your Samsung Galaxy A36 5G comes down to your personal preferences. If you’re all about aesthetics, the Clear Case is a great match. For rugged outdoor use or accident-prone users, the Rugged Case or OtterBox Commuter Series Lite delivers serious protection. Minimalists will appreciate the slim form of the React Series, while those looking for a blend of style and substance can’t go wrong with the Spigen Liquid Air.

No matter your choice, investing in a quality case is a simple way to extend the life of your Galaxy A36—and keep it looking sharp along the way.

Design and build

Samsung Galaxy A56 (left) and Galaxy A36 (right)_

The Galaxy A35 and A55 from last year featured separately placed triple camera sensors. However, the Galaxy A36 and A56 come with a single vertical camera module that houses all three cameras under reinforced glass. When you run your finger across the camera module of the A56, you can feel the individual camera sensors, whereas the glass layer on the A36 is completely flat. Since the camera island is placed in the upper left corner, these phones won’t lay flat unless used with a case.

Samsung has also reduced the bezel size on both models compared to their predecessors. The right edges on both devices retain the noticeable bulge, which houses the volume rocker and power button.

Both phones offer IP67-rated dust and water resistance and feature Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection for the back and display. While the A36 has a plastic frame, the A56 features a metal frame. The build quality is impressive for mid-range models, but frankly speaking, it is not easy to distinguish between the two phones as they appear identical.

The Galaxy A56 and A36 weigh slightly under 200 grams. The good thing is both phones are quite slim as they measure only 7.4mm in thickness. The Awesome Lavender variant of the A36 that I received reflects holographic shades when light falls on the back, whereas the Olive edition of the A56 that I got has a more muted appeal.

The Galaxy A56 and Galaxy A36 both feature a 6.7-inch display, which is slightly larger than their predecessors. They promise a peak brightness of 1,900 nits and achieve 1,200 nits in high brightness mode. Both models support an FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. While both phones offer the same display size, they seem to feature different display panels, with the A56 sporting a better one. The display-integrated fingerprint sensor is positioned well and works fine. The upper speaker is lodged in the top bezel and the bottom-firing speaker produces a balanced audio output.

The Galaxy A56 gets the Exynos 1580 chip, while the A36 has the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 onboard. Both devices are not performance-focused chipsets but are good enough for daily use. The Exynos 1580 is a brand-new chip equipped with an AMD-based GPU and an NPU with 147 TOPS, which means it’s a major upgrade over the Exynos 1480 from last year. Both phones are equipped with LPDDR4x RAM. While the A36 has UFS 2.2 storage, the A56 gets the faster UFS 3.1 storage.

One of the major attractions of the Galaxy A56 and A36 is that they come equipped with One UI 7-based Android 15, like the Galaxy S25 series. Both devices are also promised to receive six years of Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates. There are plenty of preloaded apps from Samsung, Google, and other providers, but none of them show annoying notifications.

The Galaxy A56 gets its own version of AI features dubbed as Awesome Intelligence, which includes Circle to Search, AI Select, Custom Filter, Edit Suggestions, Object Eraser, and Read Aloud. On the other hand, the Galaxy A36 has a few of these features, such as Circle to Search, Custom Filters, and Object Eraser.

The Galaxy A36 and A56 are equipped with a 12-megapixel front-facing camera that supports 10-bit 4K 40fps video recording. On the back, the A36 features a 50-megapixel (OIS) + 8-megapixel (ultra-wide) + 5-megapixel (macro) triple-camera system, whereas the A56 sports a 50-megapixel (OIS) + 12-megapixel (ultra-wide) + 5-megapixel (macro) setup. While the rear camera megapixel count remains the same as their predecessors, both phones deliver decent shots in various lighting conditions. Here are some sample shots captured using both phones.

The Galaxy A56 and A36 both pack a 5,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging. A fun fact is that even the Galaxy S25 does not support 45W rapid charging, as it supports 25W charging because it packs a comparatively smaller battery inside a compact form factor. In terms of connectivity, both phones support eSIM, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 (A36) / Bluetooth 5.3 (A56), and NFC. The previous generation featured a hybrid SIM slot, which allowed users to add a microSD. The company has axed support for microSD cards on the A36 and A56.

The Galaxy A56 positions itself as the more capable model, featuring a metal frame, faster UFS 3.1 storage, a powerful Exynos 1580 chip, and a slew of AI features. The Galaxy A36, while slightly less premium with its plastic frame and Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chip, still delivers a smooth experience with essential AI functions like Circle to Search and Object Eraser. Both devices pack a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, IP67 water resistance, and a 5,000mAh battery with 45W charging, ensuring a well-rounded experience.

Alongside the Galaxy A56, Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy A36 worldwide. The new mid-ranger gets upgrades in design, camera, and performance—plus, like the A56, it’s among the first in the A-series to feature Awesome Intelligence (AI).

Samsung Galaxy A36 Specs and Features

The Galaxy A36 sports a slightly larger 6.7-inch display (up from 6.6 inches on its predecessor), which now reaches 1,200 nits of brightness instead of 1,000 nits. It’s still a Super AMOLED panel with Full HD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection.

Samsung has also trimmed the weight and thickness, bringing it down to 195 grams and 7.4mm, while retaining IP67 water and dust resistance.

Under the hood, the A36 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, built on Samsung’s 4nm process. It runs One UI 7 on Android 15 and is promised six years of major OS and security updates, keeping it relevant until 2031.

And yes, Awesome AI is here too—bringing features like Circle to Search, Object Eraser, and AI-generated custom filters. For those unfamiliar, Awesome AI is Samsung’s branding for select AI features on its mid-range phones, bringing a slice of Galaxy AI from the flagship S-series.

Camera hardware remains unchanged from the A35, meaning it features a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide, and a 5MP macro lens. The selfie camera, however, has been swapped for a 12MP sensor, which might seem like a downgrade from the 13MP on the A35, but it’s actually the same sensor used in the Galaxy S24 series.

A 5,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging keeps things running. Connectivity options include 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and USB-C, with support for dual SIM and eSIM.

Pricing and Availability

Despite all the upgrades, Samsung has kept the A36’s price the same as its predecessor. Here’s how the pricing breaks down across different markets:

USA

128GB Galaxy A36: $399

Europe

128GB Galaxy A36: €379

256GB Galaxy A36: €449

UK

256GB Galaxy A36: £399

Samsung has been following a pattern of launching new A-series smartphones within the first quarter of the year, usually a couple of weeks after announcing its Galaxy S-series flagship phones. The South Korean brand has just launched the Galaxy S25 series in multiple markets across the globe, and it appears that the company may soon launch new A-series phones, such as the Galaxy A56 and Galaxy A36. A new leak, courtesy of tipster Abhishek Yadav, has revealed the launch timeframe for both smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy A56, Galaxy A36 launch timeframe (rumored)

According to the tipster, the Galaxy A56 and Galaxy A36 will debut by mid-March globally, including the Indian market. Since the brand has just launched its new flagship phones, it is likely that the company will start teasing the arrival of the A56 and A36 in February.
