The Galaxy Buds are designed for swimming purposes and also offer some health data in the process.

The patent is for waterproof Galaxy Buds with a removable neckband. The waterproof rating of this new pair of earbuds will be above the IPX7 rating which is the highest rating you can get in Samsung’s latest offerings in the segment. Both the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro and the Galaxy Buds 2 are rated IPX7 which means that they can withstand being underwater for 30 minutes at depths not more than 1 meter. This also means that the earbuds are not designed for underwater use, as Samsung explicitly recommends against using these buds while swimming.

The shortcomings of the present TWS Galaxy buds could be a driving factor in the development of the new device. The detachable neckband is an added accessory that ensures that both buds are secure while swimming, without any risk of losing them. As per the patent, the new pair of TWS Galaxy Buds will have multiple in-built microphones, sensors, touch controls, and a two-way speaker system.

Some of the sensors will enable the device to gather health data while in use such as burnt calories, speed, and momentum. However, the details contained in the patent documentation of course do not include the possible date of release of the device. There is no guarantee that the device will become a reality in the future.

It may however indicate a possible direction of research in improving the IP rating of current Galaxy buds while maintaining effectiveness.
