Tech blog LetsGoDigital first shared 3D renders of the Samsung Galaxy F foldable phone to reveal what the device may look like in reality. While the renders may not represent the exact design the device will pack, they give us an idea of what to expect. A fresh set of renders have not been posted online. The renders are said to be based on the leaked official video ad which gave us our first glimpse of the supposed Galaxy F foldable phone.

The most visible change from the first 3D renders posted is the hinge which folds flat and isn’t segmented like the Microsoft Surface Book hinge. The device carries an amazingly thin build. This may be due to the new polarizer filter which Samsung talked about at its developer conference. The polarizer filter is 45% thinner. In addition, the bezels seem to have been slimmed down as well.

Specs wise, the Galaxy F foldable phone is expected to pack a 7.3-inch display with a resolution of 1,536 x 2,152pixels. The screen can fold in half to give a 4.58-inch screen outwardly. The device is also said to pack two batteries. The device may likely pack a triple camera setup at the rear but that isn’t captured since the renders didn’t feature the back. However, the absence of a front camera on the device means the rear camera will double as the selfie camera. The foldable phone is expected to be unveiled on February 20 during the Galaxy S10 launch.

South Korea-based research firm CGS-CIMB Research gave an account in which it evaluates the Bill of Materials (BOM) for the foldable Galaxy F in comparison with Galaxy S9+ and an iPhone XS Max. One among the expensive item is the display – or should we say “displays”. The Galaxy F will feature one large 7.3” panel that folds down the middle alongside an external 4.58” display. Two batteries will also be included which will not add much to the price (total battery capacity is expected to be around 5,000-6,000mAh).

The BOM works out to around 65% more than the iPhone and the S9+, with the same cost. Analysts have predicted that Samsung will go for a gain margin of 65%, matching Apple, as compared to the 55% of the Galaxy S9+. With this margin, they arrive at a retail price (without carrier subsidies) of $1,800. This is almost an equal match for the rumoured price tag. So expensive though, but the uniqueness of Samsung Galaxy F is that it is one of the upcoming devices with a proper foldable screen.

Analysts project sales of about 3.5 million units of foldable phones coming year, a number that will rise rapidly to 24 million units in the year 2022. The price tags will eventually reduce gradually – the average cost of a foldable phone in 2022 is assumed to be at an average of $1,300. There will be competition to make components for foldable phones too. Samsung Display is one of the top right now, it can produce 1 million foldable screens per year, according to the report. LG Display will accomplish that range in 2020.
The producers of foldable circuit boards and batteries stand to profit from foldable phones too.

Samsung recently showcased its prototype foldable smartphone with Infinity Flex Display at Samsung Developer Conference, which turns into a tablet from a smartphone when the display is unfolded. However, the company has not talked about the technology which enables making such foldable devices.

Even though Samsung remains silent on the technology, a Korean publication connected the dots using a trail of reports and supply chain analysis, revealing how the South Korean giant managed to make a foldable smartphone.

It seems that Samsung has ditched the all-glass concept and has adopted the high-tech polymers with its trusted and long-term technology partners. Apparently, the South Korean giant has collaborated with the Japenese firm Sumitomo Chemical for producing a “luxurious” to the touch transparent polyimide that can be bent numerous times without any visible differences.

The transparent polyimide layer is attached to a flexible OLED panel directly underneath. It is attached using an extremely durable and flexible adhesive which Samsung has been developing for years. It allows the whole package to bend at the middle. The adhesive will also be able to stretch to a certain extent and will hold onto the package.

This adhesive from Samsung is called Optical Transparent Adhesive or OCA film, which is a special type of elasticized adhesive that can be bent thousands of times and still retain its original size and form. Further, it’s reported that the flexible OLED panel that Samsung is using has about 45 percent thinner polarizer.

As per the report, another Japanese supplier, Nichido Denko, is producing the polarizer film for the bendable display. Interestingly, the OLED display panel used in the Galaxy F smartphone is the same that’s used in the current Galaxy S9 or Note 9 models.

Another important part of the foldable smartphone is the stretchy hinge and the report mentions that the hinge will be sourced locally by Samsung from a company named KH Vatec. Samsung has put in a lot of time and effort with KH Vatec to develop the seemingly elastic and stretching hinge that sits right beneath the foldable display.

While Samsung has showcased its foldable smartphone, the actual commercial model is expected to be the Samsung Galaxy F or a part of Galaxy F-series. The company is yet to address the overall protection of the smartphone, user case scenarios, ergonomic issues, and software.

Samsung has been working on a foldable smartphone from quite some time and it seems that device is all set to make its public debut. According to the latest report from Korean Times, Samsung will preview its foldable smartphone next month.

The South Korean giant has scheduled a two-day conference in San Francisco dubbed Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) on 7th and 8th November. The event, which will mainly deal with the company’s software strategy, Artificial Intelligence, and IoT products, will also showcase the foldable smartphone.

The development comes through Korean Times, which cites an unnamed Samsung official for the information. The unnamed source also said that not much information related to the device will be revealed. He said, “We may provide partial information of the foldable phone at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) in November, but the finished product won’t be available there.”

It is believed that the Samsung’s foldable smartphone will come with a 7-inch OLED display, that can be folded in half with about 4.5-inch display. Previously, Koh Dong-jin, president of Samsung’s IT & Mobile Communications division, reiterated his stance on becoming the world’s first company to introduce a foldable smartphone.

Earlier, there were reports that Samsung has delayed the launch of its foldable smartphone, which was rumoured to happen in November this year. As Samsung is eager to unveil its foldable smartphone ahead of everyone else, we’ll finally get to see Samsung’s foldable phone next month.

As for the phone’s official launch, there’s a possibility that the company could launch the phone, which is rumoured to be the Galaxy F or a part of the Galaxy F-series, could be launch at Consumer Electronics Show 2019 in Las Vegas in January next year.

Other smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei and ZTE are speeding up their efforts towards foldable smartphone. Lenovo, another China-based company, is also working on a foldable smartphone, which was recently leaked in a video. The company has also teased about showcasing the phone later this month, but there’s no confirmation about an event being hosted by Lenovo this month.

Here comes new information about the Samsung’s much-rumored Galaxy F foldable smartphone. As per the recent report, Samsung will not secure the Galaxy F foldable display with the Corning Gorilla Glass due to technological limitations. Due to some unknown reasons, Corning lost out on a chance to be a part of the Samsung’s first flexible smartphone. Instead, Samsung will use a special cover glass from Sumitomo Chemical of Japan to protect its display.

According to our folks at Sammmobile, Galaxy F can’t use the Gorilla glass “due to the former’s rigid nature.” Samsung is using transparent polyimide which posses durability properties making it suitable for the Galaxy F flexible form factor. Sammobile detailed that, “the strong glass wouldn’t allow the device to fold into half. Samsung will thus use a transparent polyimide supplied by Sumitomo Chemical of Japan. It would be less durable than Gorilla Glass but would allow the Galaxy F to retain its flexible form factor.”

Currently, it’s unknown why Samsung denied the Corning Gorilla Glass and is using the material from Sumitomo. Well, whatever has happened will be for the betterment of the device and as per the needs of the Samsung. As per the source, Samsung Galaxy F might release until next year, snubbing the rumors which slated it for the November launch.

Rumors are here from past various years revealing the specs, design and other aspects of the device. But, it seems that Samsung is in no hurry to launch the Foldable device as the foldable trend is still a couple of years away from now. A tweet from Chinese tipster suggests that the phone could be the part of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy F series. The Samsung’s Galaxy F series is said to be “super” high-end, which fits the price range for the upcoming foldable smartphone. According to the previous reports, the Samsung’s foldable smartphone will be priced somewhere between $1500 and $2000.

The foldable smartphone from Samsung is said to be the most premium mobile phone from the company, above the Galaxy S-series and Galaxy Note series, which justifies the super high-end tag for the Galaxy F-series. But since there’s no evidence, take this information with a pinch of salt.

Also, there are reports that the company is also working on Galaxy R and Galaxy P series for the Chinese market and there’s a possibility that the Galaxy F is an extension of that and could be a China-exclusive smartphone lineup. The Galaxy R and Galaxy P series are for the low-range and mid-range offerings in China from the South Korean firm.

Samsung is currently gearing up to launch its next flagship smartphone — Galaxy Note 9, which is scheduled to get announced on 9th August in New York. The phone’s specs, feature, and pricing information have already been leaked online.
