As a reminder, the Galaxy Fold was first unveiled in February this year with the release set for April. However, the release was put off by Samsung following a number of issues that were encountered by early users.

The foldable smartphone was officially relaunched last month and is presently available in several markets across the world. Samsung effected some improvements in its design and construction even though the design remained the same as the first model. Samsung says the flexible display can withstand up to 200,000 folds. This was put to test recently by the guys at CNET who deployed a Foldbot that folds and opens the device severally times at an unusual speed. The machine known as FoldBot was built by SquareTrade and it automatically opens and closes the Galaxy Fold several times per second. The test lasted for over 4 hours and even though the device didn’t last up to 200k times, it stood its ground up to 119,380 times before the screen got broken. Watch the video from below.

EDITOR’S PICK: First Samples from the 108MP Mi Mix Alpha is here & we are not impressed!

Of course, there is no chance you’ll bend the screen up to 120,000 times all through its life cycle. The FoldBot also seems to move at a speed which is unusually faster than how we all will open the phone. So, the flexible display can be said to be relatively durable. Of course, this test isn’t a guarantee that if the phone falls down or gets in contact with hard objects like a bunch of keys in the pocket the display won’t get damaged.

Samsung says it has fixed the hinge and the protective layer of the flexible screen. The foldable mechanism is now hidden behind a rubbery protective layer in order to protect it from dust and other particles getting in the mechanism through the foldable part. Samsung also extended the layer on top that protects the digitizer from scratches beyond the edges, so that it can’t be peeled accidentally.

The Galaxy Fold may be a good buy after all. We await feedback from users who’ll subject it to the rigours of daily use to see how it fares.

The Fold is expected to be released in several markets this year. It was revealed last week that the Galaxy Fold for the international market (Europe) and North America will not have an Exynos chipset. Instead, it will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. More details have emerged to confirm that claim.

The Galaxy Fold firmware was analysed recently where it was observed that it was similar to the CPU on the North American version of the Galaxy S10. The analysis was done by the guys at XDA-Developers who conducted a thorough analysis of the combination firmware for the International model of the Galaxy Fold (SM-F900F) and unearthed a reference to SM8150 which is the model name by which the Snapdragon 855 is known internally.

The Fold was initially announced with an Exynos 9820 CPU but this discovery seems to have confirmed earlier speculations that the Galaxy Fold will come in two models, one with LTE and the other with 5G. Since the Snapdragon 855 has a 5G chip, it will be onboard the 5G variant. In addition to hitting Europe, earlier rumour says the 5G version will also be released in Samsung’s home country – South Korea.

While the Galaxy Fold isn’t slated to hit the store shelves anytime soon, the rumor mill hasn’t ceased churning out all sorts of speculations around the hotly-anticipated smartphone. Aside from that, the Galaxy Fold has made several appearances online in the form of leaked renders.

Keeping in line with that, the Galaxy Fold was recently spotted in a new hands-on video that was shared on YouTube. The aforesaid footage was posted on a YouTube channel called phoneoftime, and it gives us a glimpse of an AT&T model of the imminent handset. We even get a chance to check out its display crease.

If recently surfaced reports are anything to go by, the video hails from Vietnam, where Samsung’s major production hubs are located. A person booting up the phone and testing its foldable screen can be seen in the video. It seems safe to say that the person handling the phone is promoting their unlocking services.
The Galaxy Fold shows awe-inspiring responsiveness; however, the crease along the device’s central folding line is likely to pose an issue for the user. The crease is clearly visible when the phone is unfolded.

The purported Galaxy Fold seen in the video has not been confirmed as a final production unit, and chances are it might be a completely different handset. Despite the convincing footage, the final consumer device may not have any sort of fallibility since the officially unveiled Galaxy Fold did not seem flawless, unlike the handset seen in the video.

If continued use is likely to create a dent in the screen, this will significantly damage a user’s overall experience. Those willing to shell out a whopping $2000 on the Galaxy Fold are likely interested in taking full advantage of the phone’s extra large, inward-facing screen, probably for playing games or watching their favorite videos.

Delving into their favorite activity with a visible incision across the content might leave them feeling cheated. As if that weren’t enough, there’s hearsay that the phone isn’t reliable as far as long-term durability is concerned.

The Galaxy Fold will be made available in the American market on April 26th so we still expect more shreds of information regarding the device to surface online. Stay tuned in here for more news and updates about the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
