Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy J7 (2018) and Galaxy J3 (2018). Both models come in as affordable mid-range models and are successors to the Galaxy J7 (2017) and J3 (2017). Both models don’t really come with so much difference in specs when compared to their predecessors.

Samsung Galaxy J7 (2018)

The Samsung Galaxy J7 (2018) is obviously the better model among the two newly launched phones. It equally comes with a higher price tag. The device comes with a phablet-sized 5.5-inch Super AMOLED 16:9 display with HD resolution of 1280 x 720pixels. The device packs a 13MP main camera with f/1.7 lens aperture while at the front there is a 13MP camera sensor with f/1.9 lens. According to Samsung, both cameras are engineered for the low-light environments in which we take most of our pictures, like restaurants and concerts. Perhaps, there has been some software enhancement if not, this is the same camera hardware on the J7 (2017). The device is also said to come with a large battery but further details are scanty. From the previously leaked manual, we know already that the battery is a removable one.

Samsung Galaxy J3 (2018)

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy J7 (2018) sports a smaller 5.0-inch display with an HD resolution. The design is almost identical to the J7 (2018) but the display is likely an IPS LCD spec. Samsung did not reveal the processor type, RAM, battery and storage capacity of the J3 (2018). However, the camera configuration includes a 5MP f/2.2 sensor on the front and a primary 8MP camera on the back with a fairly big f/1.9 aperture. Samsung did reveal that both models come with Samsung Knox security.

Samsung says both models are affordable but did not reveal their price tags. However, we expect the models to be priced between $150- $220. The Galaxy J3(2017) was launched for $149.99 and the Galaxy J7 (2017) had a retail price of $219.99. Since there is hardly any major upgrade, the prices shouldn’t be starkly different.

When a search is conducted to collate the premium flagship models, Samsung would definitely be at the top of the list. The same thing applies to the midrange category and now, Samsung seems to have got the budget cadre covered as well. The Galaxy J-series is more or less a budget series and Samsung has got quite a number of J-series models in the works. The Galaxy J3 2018 has made an appearance on Geekbench which is an indication that the device is in the works.

The Galaxy J3 variants are listed with the model numbers SM-J337A and SM-J337P which is an indication that one would be the Galaxy J3 and the other is the Galaxy J3 Pro. Both models don’t have the same processor onboard, as the SM-J337A comes with an Exynos 7570 processor with a base frequency of 1.4GHz which is the same SoC on the Galaxy J3 (2017). On the other hand, the SM-J337P model features an Exynos 7885 SoC clocked at 1.5GHz. Both models pack 2GB of RAM and will run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.

No word yet on when the models would be unveiled but we expect them to drop soon. Since Samsung is now trying to gain lost ground on the mid-tier/budget segment, we could see these models launched at affordable prices.
