The last may not have been heard about the ill-fated Samsung Galaxy Note 7 which was subjected to a global recall following the battery defect that resulted in several recorded explosion cases. It was reported recently that Samsung had confirmed plans to sell refurbished units of the Galaxy Note 7 in select markets around the world. The Korean giant did not reveal specifics as to when the device will ship or the price and regions where it would be sold.

A new report has, however, revealed some details about the proposed launch and its likely price. According to the report aired on China’s CNTV, the refurbished Note 7 would hit the market by June this year and the product will sell in emerging markets like India, Vietnam, Africa and so on where customer place more emphasis on price than any other consideration. That is not to say safety would not be a priority, Samsung has added an extra level of security to forestall any mishap in the future.

The report also gave some insight on the likely price tag of the Galaxy Note 7 and it is expected to be 3 to 5% cheaper than the original price. For a refurbished smartphone, the price may still be too high but that may not play a big role in the long run. However, the figure may be inaccurate, we hope it would be available for up to half the initial price.

While some may be wondering why Samsung chose to use the Note 7 again, the report also revealed that they were compelled by Korean environmental law. Under Korean laws, the metal components used on smartphones must be recycled and used twice. So, if Samsung had crushed all the recalled units as some would have wanted, the company could face a huge fine. We are talking about over 4 million units here.

Xiaomi released the Mi Note 2 back in November. The dual-curved phone was originally available in black and silver. However, at CES 2017, they unveiled three additional colors (pink, green, and blue) for the device. That brings it to five colors, right? But why stop there?

According to Xiaomi Founder Lei Jun, the Mi Note 2 will be available in coral blue as well. On his Weibo page, you will find pictures of his skiing trip in Switzerland in which he is holding a blue phone he has confirmed to be the Mi Note 2.

The Mi Note 2 is already referred to as a Galaxy Note 7 alternative. Releasing it (Mi Note 2) in one of the original colors (Blue Coral) of the Note 7 might actually be smart but some will still see it as a sort of imitation. But we guess Xiaomi is just taking advantage of the situation. So if you have been waiting for one more reason to pick up the phone, you have it already.

Xiaomi’s Mi Note 2 has a 5.7-inch dual-curved OLED 1080p display, 6GB of RAM, 64GB/128GB of storage, and a Snapdragon 821 SoC. There is a 22.56MP rear camera with EIS and 3-axis gyroscope and an 8MP front facing camera. There is a fingerprint scanner up front and a 4070mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support.

There is no news yet as to when the coral blue variant will be available but we guess it should be the same time as the other three new colors.

In the quest to meet buyers’ yearning for smartphones with longer battery life, smartphone makers have developed several technological methods of battery manufacture. Smartphones are now packed with fast charging technology that delivers full capacity charge in just few minutes. But then, the rate of exploding phones seems to have increased as well, most times the phone’s battery is the culprit.

The case of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is perhaps the most notable smartphone till date to have been plagued by defective battery leading to the recall of the entire line. Although Samsung is yet to release the report of its findings on the exact cause of the Note 7 exploding incidence, local media allege that the report finds the battery as the cause.

However, there seem to be an end in sight as scientists at the Stanford University have published in the Science Advances journal that they have developed a battery that cools itself when it gets overheated. The battery is a lithium-ion battery built with flame-retardant triphenyl phosphate (TPP) inside a shell within the electrolyte fluid. The shell melts when the temperature reaches 150C (302F), releasing the chemical compound. The accompanying test result shows battery fires were extinguished in just 0.4 seconds.

Lithium-ion battery is the most popular battery that powers most gadgets, including smartphones and it gets affected by heat which turns it to a potentially explosive material. Attempts have been made in the past to incorporate TPP inside batteries without the shell and that have hampered their performance, so basically what they brought into the mix is the shell which they develop for the TPP compound inside the battery.

It is hoped that this development would lead to a break-through in lithium-ion battery manufacture which would eventually bring to an end cases of battery fire or explosions.

Early reports from Samsung‘s base in South Korea indicate that investigations into the root cause of the Galaxy Note 7’s explosion saga may have been concluded. According to a source familiar with the matter, the investigations have concluded that the main cause of the explosion was the battery.

Samsung had earlier fingered one of the two battery models featured on the Galaxy Note 7 as the cause of the explosions but that did not stop the explosions from still occurring even after replacing  about 2.5 million units with the defective battery. The tech giant was forced to completely shutdown the model and order a total recall of all units for safety reasons when incidence of exploding GAlaxy Note 7 were still being reported. The company also launched its own investigation into the cause of the explosions and earlier rumor had hinted that the company will reveal the cause of the explosions later this month.

Accordingly, the insider source revealed that the results of the investigations will be announced on January 23, just a day before the market leader goes ahead to announce its Q4 2016 earnings. The announcement will likely be made by Koh Dong-jin, head of Samsung’s mobile business, and he is also expected to announce  new measures the company is taking to prevent similar problems in future devices. The source also revealed that Samsung was able to replicate the fires during its investigation and that the cause for the fires could not be explained by any other related issues being fingered, like hardware design or software-related matters.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 catastrophe is something Samsung will want to bury as soon as possible but they will have to wait a little while before they can do so. South Korean newspaper, JoongAng Ilbo says the company will release to the public by the middle of the month, the results of its investigations about the phone.

While the most plausible cause of the explosions circulating around is the design of the battery, Samsung’s investigation covered all possible causes.

After the first set of explosions were recorded, Samsung issued a recall in affected regions except for the ones in China whose batteries were reported to have been made by a different company and didn’t have the same issue. Things got worse when replacements given back to owners started to burst up in flames. It got so serious that airlines banned the Galaxy Note 7 from being taken aboard flights.

Research by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed that the Note 7’s battery was too big for the phone and was being compressed by the body resulting in the positive and negative terminals of the battery coming in contact with each other and causing it to overheat and then explode.

The second spate of explosions led Samsung to throw in the towel and issue a worldwide recall and provide a refund or replacement with a different Samsung phone. Some owners who weren’t affected refused to turn their phones in and Samsung had to take measures by releasing updates initially preventing the phone from charging beyond a certain level and then another update to make the phone unusable all in a bid to have them return it.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is still regarded as one of the best android phones ever made and quite a number of tech reviewers still picked it as their favorite device of 2016. It is sad that such a wonderful device had to suffer such a fate but it will also prompt other manufacturers to take extra care to avoid a similar fate.

Samsung is currently focused on the Samsung Galaxy S8 right now and is doing all it can to win its fans back.

Xiaomi announced the Mi Note 2 a few hours ago and we are not going to pretend it doesn’t look like a number of devices from another company. Yes, the Mi Note 2 does look like Samsung’s S7 Edge and the Galaxy Note 7 (of blessed memory). But it is also different in a number of ways. Let’s examine how each of this device stands out from the others.

note-7

s7-edge

mi-note-2-1

Display

All three devices feature curved displays which is the major similarity they share. Samsung isn’t new to curved displays but this is Xiaomi’s first attempt at making one. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and Galaxy Note 7 both have dual-curved 5.7” displays but the S7 Edge is a tad smaller at 5.5”. The Mi Note 2′ screen is a 1080p flexible OLED display supplied by LG but Samsung’s phones sport 2K Super AMOLED displays.

Samsung’s curved edges are designed to work independently off the main screen,  allowing users to customise its use. You can put your favourite apps, custom tasks, contacts, and news feed which can all be accessed from any app just by swiping from the edges.

Xiaomi’s Mi Note 2 does something similar. Swiping from the left edge lets you access a list of wallpapers and theme customisation while a swipe from the right gives you access to preset contacts, calendar schedules, and the compass app.

It’s important to mention display protection. The Galaxy Note 7 has Gorilla Glass 5 while the S7 Edge and Mi Note 2 have Gorilla Glass 4.

Camera

When the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 leaks were pouring in, we all thought it was going to come with dual-rear cameras, but not until a few days before the launch did we get to see leaked images of the phone with a single camera. The main camera on the Mi Note 2 is a 22.56MP f/2.0 Sony IMX 318 sensor with EIS and 4K recording.

The Note 7 and S7 Edge both use a 12MP f/1.7 sensor with OIS and support for 4K recording. It’s going to be hard to tell which camera sensor is best until there is a comparison of all the three cameras but Samsung’s S7 Edge has one of the best cameras on a phone right now.

The front camera on the Xiaomi is an 8MP IMX268 shooter with a f/2.0 aperture, and Beautify 3.0. The S7 Edge and Note 7 both have 5MP front cameras with f/1.7 apertures and Auto HDR.

RAM/ROM/Processor

The Mi Note 2 comes in a variety of RAM and ROM storage. There is a 4GB RAM+64GB variant and a 6GB RAM+128GB variant. The Note 7 and S7 Edge comes with only 4GB of RAM. The Note 7 only has 64GB of storage but the S7 Edge offers 32GB and 64GB variants. The large storage option of the Xiaomi comes with sacrificing the SD card slot but Samsung allows you to use up to a 256GB SD card in any of both phones.

The Mi Note 2 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 SoC clocked at 2.35GHz. The Note 7 uses Samsung’s own Exynos 8890 chip while the S7 Edge which was released before the SD 821 was announced sports a SD820 processor. All three chips are more than enough but the SD 821 offers a little more performance.

Bells and Whistles

The Galaxy Note 7 was one of the best phones released this year. It followed the already laid down pattern of the Note series: featuring a new and improved S-Pen which no other company has been able to replicate. It was also the first note phone to be waterproof, a feature present in the S7 Edge too. The S7 Edge and Note 7 also support wireless charging.

Xiaomi on the other hand have never made a waterproof phone neither does any of their phone have support for wireless charging. So if these features are what you want in a phone, the S7 Edge is your go to device.

All three devices have NFC for payments and fingerprint scanners. Unfortunately, no ultrasonic sensor on the Mi Note 2.

The Mi Note 2 comes with a dedicated audio processor that provides 24bit Hi-Fi sound quality. Starting to become a permanent feature for Xiaomi flagships, the Mi Note 2 features an IR blaster as well.

Battery and Price

Battery life is an important factor when it comes to buying phones. The Mi Note 2 has a 4070mAh battery, the S7 Edge has a 3600mAh battery, and the Note 7 has a 3500mAh battery and all three phones support QC 3.0. Xiaomi’s battery is larger and should have a longer battery life but real life tests are still necessary to find out how it holds up.

The Mi Note 2 starts at $413 for the standard edition with 4GB + 64GB, and moves up to $487 for the 6GB+128GB variant. A third variant called the Global Edition that can work with tons of carriers including CDMA networks in the US sports 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM and is priced at $516.

Samsung’s Note 7 has been discontinued but was priced at $850 which is way more expensive than even the global variant of the Mi Note 2. The S7 Edge is not cheap either. It starts at around $600 for the 32GB version and over $700 for the 32GB variant.

Following yesterday’s leak of a render of the upcoming Huawei Mate 9, Evan Blass has released that of the curved variant called the Mate 9 Pro a.k.a. Long Island.

We are aware that quite a number of Chinese manufacturers are not known for original designs but looking at the front of the Mate 9 Pro, all I can think of is the Galaxy Note 7 or the Galaxy S7 Edge and if this is what the real device looks like, it’s sufficient to say it’s a disappointing move from a company as big as Huawei.

The confusing part about the design is the use of a physical home button. Samsung is known for placing a fingerprint scanner under their home button and Huawei doesn’t use capacitive buttons for their flagships talk less of a physical home button. But this render shows that the Mate 9 Pro has its fingerprint scanner on the rear and still sports a physical home button which leads to the question ”What is the physical button for other than a complete imitation of the Note 7 or S7 Edge?”.

The Mate 9 Pro is expected to feature a 5.9” display like its sibling but will be a 2K dual curved one. It will sport 6GB of RAM, 256GB of ROM, a 4000mAh battery with support for Huawei’s Supercharge technology.

Both versions of the Mate 9 are expected to launch on the 3rd of November in Berlin.

Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note 7 flagship have been hit by issues of exploding batteries which have resulted in the company recalling over 2.5 million units of the Note 7. What some probably don’t know is that not all units of the Galaxy Note 7 are affected by the explosion issue and subsequent global recall. First, the explosions of the Note 7 is not as a result of defects on the phone itself but due to faulty batteries.

The Galaxy Note 7 battery cells are manufactured by two companies, Samsung SDI Co, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics and Amperex Technology LTD (ATL). But they are packaged in the company’s Vietnam factory and through a Chinese branch of South Korea-based ITM Semiconductor Co. Ltd.

While Samsung SDI supplies about 70% of the batteries on the Galaxy Note 7 basically non-removable ones, Amperex made up the remaining 30%. Unfortunately, it’s the batteries manufactured by Samsung SDI which is defective. Apparently, a flaw in the battery cell resulted in negative and positive electrodes coming together which is abnormal.

According to an Amperex official, the company only supplies batteries for Galaxy Note 7 China Edition. This explains why the Note 7 launch in China still went ahead on September 1. So, If you are in China and own one of the Galaxy Note 7 launched on September 1, then your Note 7 is not among those at risk of explosion. If you’re planning to own one, then you’re good to go as long as you check to make sure the battery on the device is the one manufactured by Amperex Technology LTD.

You can also go ahead to confirm from the back of the phone’s casing if your Galaxy Note 7 is manufactured in Korea or Vietnam, then it probably has a defective Samsung SDI battery inside but if it is written made in China, then it contains a safe ATL battery inside and poses no risk of explosion. This information about where the phone is manufactured can also be accessed from the phone’s system settings.

Apart from China, the China edition of the Galaxy Note 7 with ATL batteries is said to also ship to Hong Kong, mainland China, and Macao. However, the T-Mobile carrier based version of the Note 7 is actually manufactured in China but has been recalled as well. This is just to allay the fears of Americans and not because the units are defective as well.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 launched with much fanfare. With a nice ad starring Hollywood actor, Christoph Waltz, and lots of people drooling over the coral blue unit, it was having a lot of fun being the new android poster boy……until the first report of a unit exploding. Then other people started to report similar issues and things seemed to take a downward spiral from there.

Now the company has issued a recall of all Galaxy Note 7 units except for the inventory for China which Samsung says are fitted with batteries from a different supplier. While some folks might still be sceptical about purchasing the phone, Samsung must have confirmed that the units are fine before issuing an official statement on the matter.

The company has to recall up to 2.5 million units and offer replacements to owners for a phone that was already struggling to meet demands. There are a total of 35 instances of the Galaxy Note 7 exploding which are too many for a phone released less than a month ago or for any phone for that matter.

Other phones that have been reported to have exploded this year includes the Xiaomi Mi 5 and the OnePlus 3.

Its no longer news that Samsung has finally popped the Galaxy Note 7 after a great deal of anticipation with the device featuring almost all the specs Samsung was rumored to be infusing into the Note 7. However, one bit that might have left some a little disappointed is the lack of a 6GB RAM on the models launched during the  7 Unpacked event.

Soon after the launch though, we got wind that Samsung actually produced a 6GB RAM version for the Note 7 and that version was spotted on China’s Telecoms regulatory agency TENAA’s website. The TENAA listing revealed the Galaxy  Note 7 features 6GB of RAM with a giant 128GB built-in storage, showing prospects of being one for those who love having lots of apps on their smartphone.

Samsung had been silent on this discovery all these while, but the Korean electronics giant seems to have broken its silence. Speaking for the first time about the 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM high-end version, Samsung’s Head of Mobile Communications Business, D.J Koh hinted that the company is working on the high-end 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM version for the Chinese market due to the fact that Chinese phonemakers seem to have shifted the battle ground to outwit each other to the memory size, both RAM and ROM sizes.

The statement as reported by the Korea Herald, is perhaps an indication that the 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM edition of the Note 7 will be exclusive to the Chinese market, at least for now. The Samsung Exec, however, suggested that even though it would be exclusive to China, the 6GB RAM Galaxy Note 7 may find its way into other markets as time progresses but for now, it is China’s version.

The China Edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was recently certified by TENAA, along the line revealing some cheering details about it having 6GB of RAM. Presently discussions have shifted towards the price tag the flagship would likely carry in China.

Insider information gathered from a sales staff at Samsung by Chinese media indicates that the Chinese version of the Galaxy Note 7 is expected to be officially unveiled on August 26 while sales of the device will likely start on September 2. As for the price tag, the base version of the Galaxy Note 7 China edition with 4GB RAM + 64GB onboard storage will likely sell for 5688 yuan ($854) while the top-end version with 6GB RAM + 128GB built-in storage is expected to have a price tag of 6088 yuan ($914).

The 6GB RAM version of the Galaxy Note 7 will only be available in China and also the China version will be powered by the Snapdragon 820 chipset . The China edition also features a curved screen, IP68 waterproof and dustproof certification, USB Type-C interface, iris recognition technology, pressure sensitive S Pen, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and 12MP camera. The flagship smartphone also crams a 3500mAh battery under its hood which supports fast charging.

Samsung formally unveiled the Galaxy Note 7 is an action packed ceremony on August 2, thus effectively putting to rest the avalanche of rumors surrounding the device. But the rumor mills never go to rest, especially on this sleek gadget as there are news about a 6GB RAM of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in the works somewhere.

The Galaxy Note 7 was released with a 4GB RAM as the custom RAM size on all variants of the device but the Note 7 had earlier been rumored to have seen an upgrade from 4GB RAM to 6GB RAM. However the launch of the device was thought to have put to rest that rumor.

Now, facts have emerged from a recent filing on TENAA that there is actyually a 6GB RAM in the works. The filling revealed what could be a top-end version of the Chinese edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 packing a 6GB RAM pairing up with a monstrous 128GB of built-in storage.

The TENAA listing was made public on August 4, with model number SM-N9300, and corresponds with a GeekBench posting about a device with similar model number, both showing the Galaxy Note 7 (SM-N9300) llistedas a 6GB RAM packing version.

Ordinarily, we had wondered the need for a 6GB RAM on the Galaxy Note 7 from the technical point of view, considering that apps are getting smaller in size, Android is also getting slimmer and running too many background apps would only drain the battery faster. But then, we are talking about China where a lot of mobile phone manufacturers have ventured into production of flagships with 6GB RAM in order to outwit competitors. The OnePlus 3 is the latest with such feature and it won’t be a bad idea if Samsung offers a 6GB RAM version on the Note 7 at least to ensure it doesn’t lose a few customers to the extremely strong competition in the country.

Its just a couple of weeks to the “7 Unpacked” event holding on August 2 in New York, yet more leaks have continued to trail the Galaxy Note7 which Samsung is expected to unveil on that day. The latest leak is a short hands-on video which shows a Galaxy Note7 in operation.

The video (located under this post), comes from the stable of accessory maker Olixer and is actually an exhibition of the testing of a working Galaxy Note7 with three different screen protectors. Even though the video was meant to showcase the accessories, it offers us an opportunity to sample the flagship smartphone giving us a peek at the bezel-less edges and curved edge display the phone sport.

Also, a photo render (pictured above) of the Coral blue color variant the Samsung Galaxy Note7 is said to feature was leaked online by famous leakster Evan Blass @evleaks on Twitter. The image shows the Note7 in all its glory and beautiful color. The press render also reveals the dual curved edges, USB Type-C port, the S-Pen already ejected from its slot, part of the camera sensor which would be used for the iris scanner, a peach-gold type frame, the embedded fingerprint sensor and on the display is the same S-Pen themed background that had featured in lots of recent leaked images.

The Galaxy Note7 brings many innovations like being the first phablet to introduce a dual curved edge display, first to run on Samsung latest TouchWiz Grace UX operating system, and sport an iris scanner. Samsung also skipped the number 6 which is supposed to be the next after the Galaxy Note 5, in order to correct the confusing name anomaly between the Galaxy S series and Note series.

A lot has already been shared online about the Galaxy Note 7, right from the processor, memory, display and the fact that the Note 7 will feature an Iris scanner. However, we were really unaware about how will this new Iris scanner technology work? Thanks to the latest leaks, we know how exactly it will unlock the device.

The leaked images of a working prototype show that the Galaxy Note 7 will use infra-red scanning method for the iris scanner to unlock the device. The biggest advantage of this technology is that it can unlock the device even at night or other extremely low light situations. Leaks also suggested that Samsung’s iris recognition technology can emulate the conventional fingerprint unlock in terms of speed.

What we already know about the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 which is launching on August 2nd is that it will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor,  5.7 inches/ 6-inch 2K super AMOLED double curved screen and  6GB  RAM with 64 GB internal storage.

On the imaging front, the Galaxy Note 7 is expected to feature a 5MP front camera, and a 12MP rear camera. It should be dustproof and waterproof with IP68 level certification as well.

A big question is that, would you buy such a powerful device if it will be priced around (rumored) CNY 6300/USD 950 ? To be honest, a lot of Samsung fans will surely do.

Finally, after the numerous speculations, leaks, and rumors, the next generation of Samsung Galaxy Note is going to be launch on 2nd August and Samsung has officially confirmed that it will be called the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 !

Samsung has shared media invites for the 7 Unpacked 2016 event which will take place at 11:00 a.m. EDT in New York on August 2, 2016. Simultaneous launch events will take place in Rio de Janeiro at noon and in London at 4:00 p.m. The invite itself is pretty minimalistic and shows an S pen and a loading icon.

What we already know by now is that the Note 7 will feature top of the shelf hardware and is supposed to sport either 5.7 inches or a 6 inches display. The leaked prototype images confirmed that it will be a huge phablet with a curved display like the S7 Edge and Samsung’s trademark Home key button beneath the screen.

As it has become a norm these days with Samsung, it may release different devices for different markets. Note 7 is also expected to be launched in 2 variants, a Snapdragon 821 and another one with Exynos chipset. Rest of the features may be static like the Super AMOLED screen, Dual Pixel camera as the Galaxy S7 Edge. RAM may vary between 4GB / 6GB depending on the model and the market.

As for now, let us just wait for the official launch and in case you want to watch the event live, there will be a Live streaming of the New York event at www.samsung.com and Samsung Newsroom (news.samsung.com/global)

New prototype photos that are attributed to be actual rendition of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 have been seen online. The images were actually posted on Twitter by Tech leaks guru Steve Hemmerstoffer (@stagueve).

The leaked photos have been coming out in succession since yesterday and it looks like that of a prototype Galaxy Note 7, with the test unit number embedded at the top. The images can best be described as that of a huge phablet whose display is curved and Samsung’s trademark Home key button sitting at the bottom.

Even more images of the Galaxy Note 7 prototype surfaced today, showing the device powered on and displaying what should be Samsung’s TouchWiz UI’s low battery warning notifications.  The display also shows a lot of modules just at the top of the screen which may just confirm that the device might pop with an iris scanner on the right of the earpiece since we know the front facing camera is at the left of the centrally placed earpiece slit. The rest of the modules are likely light and camera sensors but the two openings on the right couldn’t be anything else but for an iris scanner.

Just as a reminder, the Galaxy Note 7  is touted to sport a Snapdragon 821 or Exynos chipsets depending on the target market, 5.8-inch Quad HD AMOLED screen, 4GB / 6GB of RAM, and the same Dual Pixel camera that is on the Galaxy S7 Edge. The device’s S Pen stylus would come with new capabilities. The  Note 7 will most likely be unveiled August 2, and should start at $800.

In continuation to the leaks and reveals for Samsung’s upcoming flagship, the Galaxy Note 7, we have just got a new rumor about the screen size of the upcoming device.

As of now what we know is that the Galaxy Note 7 will have dual-curved display but it may be of 6-inches rather than 5.7-inches as found on its predecessor.

According to a listing on India’s import-export database site Zauba.com, a device bearing a serial number SM-N930R4 with 6-inches screen size was imported in India from South Korea on 1st July. The said serial number SM-N930R4 corresponds to the Galaxy Note 7.

However, the actual device may come with a different set of specifications as this may just be a prototype for testing purpose. We cannot event count out the possibility of human error in mentioning 5.7-inches as 6-inches.

While we are already aware that this upcoming flagship device will feature 6GB RAM and Snapdragon 823 processor and that it will feature a USB type C port, a first in Samsung’s devices, we will have to wait for just about a month more to see rest of the features of the Note 7.
