Smartphone sales in India experienced a significant increase during the first wave of the festive season sales between September 26 and October 6, 2024. During this period, Amazon carried out the Amazon Great Indian Sale and Flipkart conducted the Big Billion Days Sale, while other retailers also held concurrent sales events. A survey conducted by TechInsights showed significant growth in India’s smartphone sales during the first wave of the 2024 festive season.

Samsung leads smartphone sales during the festive season sale

According to the latest estimates from TechInsights, sales grew by 11 percent year-over-year (YoY). It is important to note that the first wave of the festive season in 2024 lasted 11 days, compared to 7-8 days in the past couple of years. All YoY comparisons are made between the first wave of 2024 and that of 2023.

Samsung emerged as the leader in smartphone sales volume, capturing a 20 percent market share. The company’s top-selling models, such as the Galaxy M35, Galaxy S23, Galaxy A14, and Galaxy S23 FE, contributed significantly to this achievement. According to TechInsights, Samsung’s sales in unit terms grew by 17 percent YoY during the first wave of the 2024 festive season compared to the same period in 2023.

Abhilash Kumar, an industry analyst at TechInsights, commented on Samsung’s performance, stating, “Samsung had fantastic numbers in the first wave of festive season sales. This is driven by attractive deals and price cuts on products across price bands pertaining to Galaxy A, M, and S series. Also, Samsung was the main sponsor for sales events on Flipkart and Amazon, which gave it an additional push. Samsung sales in unit terms grew 17% YoY in 2024’s first wave.”

The growth in smartphone sales can be attributed to several factors. The extended duration of the festive season sales provided consumers with more time to make purchases. Additionally, the aggressive marketing strategies and attractive discounts offered by manufacturers and retailers played a crucial role in driving sales.

Before the year’s end, the Korean giant is preparing to launch the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE’s Sndaprgon 8 Gen 1 variant in India. The promotional banner has appeared on Flipkart with the Galaxy S23 FE’s tagline, “The New Epic.” Even the product page for the Galaxy S23 FE SD Gen 1 variant is live. As a reminder, the Galaxy S23 FE Exynos variant is already retailing in India via Amazon and Samsung.com for the price of Rs 59,999 for the 8GB RAM and 128GB variant.

There’s no official announcement from Samsung’s side about the launch of the Snapdragon edition of the Galaxy S23 FE, but Flipkart’s page listing somehow confirms its upcoming launch. Details about its availability are yet unknown, but the Prurple Color variant with 128GB storage and 8GB RAM is listed on the e-retailer in India.

Apart from the Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 that is present in the Galaxy S22 with the Adreno 730 GPU, all other specifications will be familiar with the Exynos version.

Earlier today, Samsung held a launch event in Seoul, Korea, to launch a bunch of new Fan Edition devices including the Galaxy S23 FE. This new smartphone is the highly awaited successor of the Galaxy S21 FE which debuted back in 2021.

Design & display

The Galaxy S23 FE follows the design language of the S23 series with three floating cameras on the back. This time, Samsung has brought a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 finish to the S23 FE, and the frame is made out of aluminum. The edges of the device are curved to make gripping easy. The phone is 8.2mm thick and weighs 209 grams. Like the flagship lineup, the device also features an IP68 water resistance rating.

Up-front, the smartphone also features a 6.4-inch FHD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) AMOLED display with a centered punch hole, a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz, and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 Protection. There is an in-display fingerprint sensor for security.

Specifications

Under the hood, the Galaxy S23 FE has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC for select regions, the same chip present in the Galaxy S22 series devices. Other regions will get a Samsung Exynos 2200 SoC, which has a peak clock speed of 2.8GHz. Geekbench scores of both versions have revealed that there won’t be much difference in their performance.

The smartphone will be offered in 8GB RAM, with the option of 128GB or 256GB storage. It has a 4,500mAh battery onboard that supports 25W fast charging, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. Samsung claims that you can charge up to 50% of the battery in 30 minutes with the 25W wired fast charging.

Samsung has also included a vapor chamber cooling system to keep the thermals under control. Out of the box, the phone will offer Android 13, layered with One UI 5.1. Samsung promises 4 years of Android updates and 5 years of security updates for the device, meaning that it will get major updates till Android 17.

Other features include Dual SIM connectivity with 5G SA/NSA, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 6E 802.11ax (2.4/5GHz), Bluetooth 5.3, GPS + GLONASS, USB 3.1, and NFC support. It has a stereo speaker setup onboard with Dolby Atmos tuning.

Camera

The Galaxy S23 FE comes with an upgraded 50MP primary camera that has f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization. The 12MP ultrawide sensor covers a 123˚ FOV with f/2.2 aperture. The third sensor on the back is an 8MP Telephoto camera with an f/2.4 aperture, 3x optical zoom, and optical image stabilization. On the front, it has a 10MP camera with f/2.4 aperture and 80˚ FOV.

There are a lot of camera features to play around with including the Nightography mode that lets you take clear selfies and portraits after dark. Pro mode gives you control of shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and more.

It’s almost certain that Exynos chips are making a comeback. For months, we’ve been hearing rumors about a deca-core Exynos 2400 processor that’s rumored to power some Galaxy S24 models next year. The Galaxy S23 FE model, which should launch later this year, is also said to pack an Exynos-branded processor. Now, a new reliable report is here to confirm these long-standing rumors.

Exynos’ return seems inevitable

Pocket-lint reports that Samsung is siding with its own Exynos processors for the upcoming Galaxy S23 FE, which is said to be debuting later this year. While the report didn’t mention the exact processor, Geekbench recently listed the device with the older Exynos 2200. However, the S23 FE units shipping to the US may pack a Qualcomm processor, possibly the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

The report, citing sources, also claims that Samsung will revert back to Exynos chips for the flagship S24 series, launching next year. The current Galaxy S23 models are all powered by an overclocked Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor. It has started bagging various certifications including 3C and a battery certification from South Korea. The Galaxy S23 FE has now been spotted on Geekbench. 

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE listed on Geekbench

For those unaware, last week the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE appeared on Geekbench with the model number SM-S711B. Now, a new listing on the benchmarking platform with a different model number reveals new info. The new particular variant of the Galaxy S23 FE has the model number SM-S711U1 which potentially suggests at the US and global variants of the device. 

The listing reveals a motherboard codenamed taro and it comprises four cores clocked at 1.79GHz, three cores at 2.50GHz, and one core and 3GHz. It has an Adreno 730 GPU onboard. The chipset details correspond to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. The new listing also mentions 8GB RAM onboard and Android 13 OS. In Geekbench’s single-core and multi-core test results, the device scores 1,549 and 3,718 points respectively. 

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE is expected to launch in a select few markets. We already know that the device with model number SM-S711B will be powered by Exynos 2200. It remains to be seen if Samsung will offer the S23 FE in two processor options or if they will differ based on region.

But a new report has hinted that the Galaxy S23 FE will be launching in the third quarter of this year. In other words, we can expect the announcement to be held sometime between July and September 2023. If this news is true, the South Korean tech giant’s latest Fan Edition phone will be arriving a whole quarter ahead of its initial launch timeline. For those unaware, it was previously rumored that the brand will launch the Galaxy S23 FE sometime in Q4 2023.

Now, the SamMobile report claims that the device will first launch in Q3 2023, but only in select markets. Unfortunately, it is still unclear which regions will receive the device first. Although, a broader global release is expected to kick off in the fourth and final quarter of this year, or the October to December period. It’s been a few weeks since Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, launched its flagship Galaxy S-series lineup for this year, which includes three phones — Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Going by the company’s track record, the South Korean giant should launch a new device in the lineup — Galaxy S23 FE. There have also been some leaks related to the phone, indicating its launch somewhere around August, but that may not be the case.

According to the latest report, Samsung may skip releasing the Fan Edition for the S-series this year, meaning that the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE may not get launched. Apart from the Galaxy S23 FE not launching this year, there’s not much known about this.

It is not yet clear if the Galaxy S23 FE isn’t launching this year, then it is getting canceled or postponed. It doesn’t make sense for Samsung to launch the phone next year as in early 2024, there will be a successor to the Galaxy S23 lineup. So, it’s pretty safe to assume that if the S23 FE isn’t getting launched this year, it’s not coming to the market.

The Fan Edition or the FE offering for the flagship Galaxy S-series is meant to be a “flagship killer” type of device, and the company launches it with a similar kind of budget. But, the problem is that the previous year’s S-series lineup becomes available at a discounted rate, and then there are mid-range and upper mid-range Galaxy A-series phones, giving tough competition to the FE model.

As of now, it’s safe to assume that the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE isn’t getting launched, especially after the fact that the company didn’t launch the Galaxy S22 FE last year. Based on the developments, it appears that Samsung is done with the Fan Edition offerings.
