There is always an end to everything with a beginning. That is a popular mantra and it seems to apply presently to the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Samsung has announced the end of software support for the 2016 flagship models.

This is coming after four years since the models were launched. The two models were already in the quarterly Security update cycle and had just received the March 2020 security patch last month. The models have now be delisted from Samsung’s Android Security Updates device database. Curiously, the Galaxy S7 Active is still listed to receive quarterly security patches but that is maybe because it was launched after the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The S7 Active may not be listed for long. However, 4 straight years of security support Is an impressive one from the Korean giant.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge were launched in 2016 with ANdroid 6.0 Marshmallow onboard. Samsung released two full Android version updates, that is Android 7 and Android 8.0 Oreo which was the last it got in 2018. Since then, the phones have received quarterly security updates which seems to have now ended. The S7 series launch was beclouded by the Galaxy Note 7 which launched a few months later but became ill-fated as a result of defective batteries that resulted in several exploding units.

First reports came from the UK, then the update has started to expand in other European countries, so we assume that it will gradually reach every unit of Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge in the next few days. The update weighs 1274.28 MB and it carries the build number G930FXXU2ERD5 on the Galaxy S7 and G935FXXU2ERD5 on the S7 Edge. It obviously includes the latest iteration of Samsung’s customized user interface, called Samsung Experience 9.0. We already had the pleasure to test the new UI on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 series: it contains several graphics renewals and important new features.

The update on Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge is obviously coming via OTA, so you should get a notification on your phone. We suggest you download it while you are connected to a WiFi network if you do not want to consume your data traffic. Further, even Samsung Turkey had confirmed the arrival of the update in the past: the official website mentioned April 13 as the rollout date, but today is 21st April and both Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are still running Android Nougat. We hope that May 18 will be the right day. According to Samsung Turkey, besides Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, even the Samsung Galaxy A-series (2017 models) will get updated to Android Oreo soon.

The website lists the 1st June as the rollout date of the update on Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, and A7 (2017). Previously, the trio was tipped to get the update on May 25, but according to the new info it has been delayed by six days. Android Oreo for each of the above-mentioned handsets will be customized by Samsung Experience 9.0 UI which will include several new features and improvements.

New updates have just headed to Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 (2017). The Korean leader of the hi-tech market has supported two of its most important affordable phones by releasing two updates identified by the build numbers A320FLXXU2BRC1 and A520FXXU4BRD1, respectively. On the A3 (2017), the update brings the Android security patch for the month of March which fixes important vulnerabilities of the operating system and Samsung’s customized Experience UI.

Besides the Android security patch, the update for the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) comes with a new autofocus mode for the front camera and AR stickers. The update for Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) brings a more recent Android security patch: the latest one for the month of April, which has been released by Google this month. Even Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge have received a new update, but it has been rolled out only on the variants launched by the U.S. carrier T-Mobile.

The update for Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge carries the build numbers G930TUVS4BRC1 and G935TUVS4BRC1, and it brings the April security patch just like Samsung Galaxy A5. If you still did not receive the OTA notification on your Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, S7 or S7 Edge you can head to the Settings, then choose Software updates to try to force its arrival.

Samsung has already released Android Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 but is yet to confirm the release date of the update for the Galaxy Note 8. Well, not until now. Samsung may have revealed the timetable for its next Oreo roll out for the Note 8 as well as the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy A3. The release details were spotted on the website – Güncelmiyiz which is owned and operated by Samsung Turkey.

The website is known for providing details about upcoming firmware updates for Samsung devices. So it is interesting to observe the latest update which reflects that Android 8.0 Oreo is the next major OS update for the Galaxy Note 8 and the firmware is in the test phase right now with a “planned update date” of March 30. In addition to the Galaxy Note 8 Oreo release date, the website also mentions that Android 8.0 Oreo is in the test phase for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge with a planned release date of April 13. Similar information is also given for the Galaxy A3, A5 and A7 (2017) all of which are listed to receive the Oreo update on May 25 this year. In addition, the 9.7-inch Galaxy Tab S3 is scheduled to receive Oreo on May 4.

Although the details seem to be for the models in use in Turkey, we expect the rollout to extend to other markets when they become available in Turkey. Popular benchmarking site, Antutu has released a list of the most popular android smartphones. The figures are generated by a sort of counter that records the number of individual devices of a particular phone that checks into the Antutu database. Only one manufacturer gets multiple appearance on the list, and that’s Xiaomi.

Not only is Xiaomi the most popular brand, its Xiaomi Mi 5 phone is number one on the list with 115,132. The Mi 5 is still a very popular device even though it already has two successors, the Xiaomi Mi 5s and the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus (which both appear on the list). The reason why it is still popular can be narrowed down to its price. The Mi 5 is currently priced at under $300 for both its 32GB and 64GB variants. Pair that with its capable Snapdragon 820 SoC, its 4-axis main camera, and its compact size. Its no surprise why this phone is loved by many.

Next on the list is the OnePlus 3T with 83,458. The OnePlus 3T is also another device that balances price and performance. It sports the Snapdragon 821 processor, a 5.5” FHD display, 6GB of RAM and a 3400mAh battery with support for Dash Charge, OnePlus’s fast charging technology and one of the fastest on the planet now.

Closing the top 3 is another Xiaomi phone, the Mi 5s. This is another Snapdragon 821 phone and one that is priced under $300. The Mi 5s is followed by its dual-camera variant, the Mi 5S Plus.

The Redmi Note 3 is the fourth Xiaomi phone on the list and sits at the seventh position. OPPO’s R9s is also on the list and sits ahead of Huawei’s only appearance, the Mate 9. Xiaomi closes the list with its Redmi Note 4.

Popular benchmarking site, Antutu has released a list of the top 10 smartphones according to the major regions. The list is formed from a statistics of phones benchmarked from that region and not from a sales standpoint. The data was recorded starting from the first day of the year up until the 31st of December, 2016.

China Mainland

The results from the Chinese Mainland see Xiaomi clinching the top two spots with the Mi 5 and Redmi Note 3. Third spot goes to the LeEco Le 2 and Samsung’s S7 Edge comes in at number 4. Other phones that make the list include the Huawei Mate 8, Meizu MX5, ZUK Z2 and Le Max 2.

Taiwan

Taiwan’s list is quite different as it has phones made by company’s from the small island nation. Asus’s Zenfone 2 is at the top of the list with 6.56% and is followed by the Redmi Note 3 with 5.03%. Third and fourth spots are occupied by the Galaxy Note 5 and the HTC 10. The Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy Note 4 are right behind them. ASUS and HTC still make it to the list with the Zenfone 3 and HTC One M8 and Sony comes in at number 9 and 10 with the Xperia Z5 Premium and Xperia Z3.

Hong Kong

The Antutu results for Hong Kong has Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge taking the lead and the Redmi Note 3 coming in second. LG’s V10 comes in third position and is followed by the Galaxy S7. Samsung’s popularity doesn’t end there as right after the Galaxy S7 is the Galaxy Note 5, the Galaxy Note 4, the Galaxy A9 (2016), and the Galaxy Note 3 closing the list.

United States

In the United States, Samsung shows it is still the boss by having six of its devices on the list. The Nexus 6P is also on the Antutu list, coming in at number 5 and followed by the Redmi Note 3 and Nexus 6. The appearance of the Redmi Note 3 on the list is quite a surprise since Xiaomi has not launched any of its phones in North America.

India

The Indian market has become a very important one for Chinese manufacturers as the competition in their home market gets tougher. One company that has invested greatly in the Indian market is Xiaomi and its investment has paid off greatly. The list is headed by the Redmi Note 3 and includes other devices like the Redmi Note 2, Mi4c, Mi5, Mi4, and Mi 4i. Asus Zenfone 2 and Samsung’s S7 Edge also make it to the list.

Global

Ending it is the Antutu global list which has the Redmi Note 3 heading it. Xiaomi also gets the second spot with the Mi5 and Samsung’s S7 Edge and S6 hold the third and fourth position. LeEco’s Le 2 and the Zenfone 2 also makes it to the list.

The results show that even though the popularity of Chinese phones continues to increase and more people keep purchasing them for their affordable price, the major markets are still controlled by the big brands like Samsung who rake in a lot of money in these regions due to their high profit margins.

Samsung has officially launched a new Black Pearl color variant of its Galaxy S7 Edge flagship phone. The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Black Pearl variant comes as the seventh color variant of the popular Galaxy series device. It is the third color added to the lineup after the release of the Galaxy S7 Edge earlier this year and it brings to seven (7) the tally of color variants now available on the S7 Edge.

The Black Pearl color variant has a glossy outlook which radiates quality and luxury and will only be available on the top-end 128GB storage version. The color gives the device a stylish, sleek look and it covers the entire device, including the edges. The color even adds depth to the S7 Edge’s glass design.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is now available in White Pearl, Black Onyx, Gold Platinum, Silver Titanium, Blue Coral, Pink Gold and the latest Black Pearl color. The Black Pearl version will be available in select market from December 9 but Samsung didn’t mention the specific market. However, rumor has it that Samsung’s home country, South Korea is one of the market the version will be available in. Also, the Black Pearl version is already listed on the official Samsung Lynx flagship store in China with a hefty price tag of 6288 Yuan ($911). This is an indication that the Chinese market will join the select market where it will be sold.

Xiaomi announced the Mi Note 2 a few hours ago and we are not going to pretend it doesn’t look like a number of devices from another company. Yes, the Mi Note 2 does look like Samsung’s S7 Edge and the Galaxy Note 7 (of blessed memory). But it is also different in a number of ways. Let’s examine how each of this device stands out from the others.

Display

All three devices feature curved displays which is the major similarity they share. Samsung isn’t new to curved displays but this is Xiaomi’s first attempt at making one. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and Galaxy Note 7 both have dual-curved 5.7” displays but the S7 Edge is a tad smaller at 5.5”. The Mi Note 2′ screen is a 1080p flexible OLED display supplied by LG but Samsung’s phones sport 2K Super AMOLED displays.

Samsung’s curved edges are designed to work independently off the main screen,  allowing users to customise its use. You can put your favourite apps, custom tasks, contacts, and news feed which can all be accessed from any app just by swiping from the edges.

Xiaomi’s Mi Note 2 does something similar. Swiping from the left edge lets you access a list of wallpapers and theme customisation while a swipe from the right gives you access to preset contacts, calendar schedules, and the compass app.

It’s important to mention display protection. The Galaxy Note 7 has Gorilla Glass 5 while the S7 Edge and Mi Note 2 have Gorilla Glass 4.

Camera

When the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 leaks were pouring in, we all thought it was going to come with dual-rear cameras, but not until a few days before the launch did we get to see leaked images of the phone with a single camera. The main camera on the Mi Note 2 is a 22.56MP f/2.0 Sony IMX 318 sensor with EIS and 4K recording.

The Note 7 and S7 Edge both use a 12MP f/1.7 sensor with OIS and support for 4K recording. It’s going to be hard to tell which camera sensor is best until there is a comparison of all the three cameras but Samsung’s S7 Edge has one of the best cameras on a phone right now.

The front camera on the Xiaomi is an 8MP IMX268 shooter with a f/2.0 aperture, and Beautify 3.0. The S7 Edge and Note 7 both have 5MP front cameras with f/1.7 apertures and Auto HDR.

RAM/ROM/Processor

The Mi Note 2 comes in a variety of RAM and ROM storage. There is a 4GB RAM+64GB variant and a 6GB RAM+128GB variant. The Note 7 and S7 Edge comes with only 4GB of RAM. The Note 7 only has 64GB of storage but the S7 Edge offers 32GB and 64GB variants. The large storage option of the Xiaomi comes with sacrificing the SD card slot but Samsung allows you to use up to a 256GB SD card in any of both phones.

The Mi Note 2 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 SoC clocked at 2.35GHz. The Note 7 uses Samsung’s own Exynos 8890 chip while the S7 Edge which was released before the SD 821 was announced sports a SD820 processor. All three chips are more than enough but the SD 821 offers a little more performance.

Bells and Whistles

The Galaxy Note 7 was one of the best phones released this year. It followed the already laid down pattern of the Note series: featuring a new and improved S-Pen which no other company has been able to replicate. It was also the first note phone to be waterproof, a feature present in the S7 Edge too. The S7 Edge and Note 7 also support wireless charging.

Xiaomi on the other hand have never made a waterproof phone neither does any of their phone have support for wireless charging. So if these features are what you want in a phone, the S7 Edge is your go to device.

All three devices have NFC for payments and fingerprint scanners. Unfortunately, no ultrasonic sensor on the Mi Note 2.

The Mi Note 2 comes with a dedicated audio processor that provides 24bit Hi-Fi sound quality. Starting to become a permanent feature for Xiaomi flagships, the Mi Note 2 features an IR blaster as well.

Battery and Price

Battery life is an important factor when it comes to buying phones. The Mi Note 2 has a 4070mAh battery, the S7 Edge has a 3600mAh battery, and the Note 7 has a 3500mAh battery and all three phones support QC 3.0. Xiaomi’s battery is larger and should have a longer battery life but real life tests are still necessary to find out how it holds up.

The Mi Note 2 starts at $413 for the standard edition with 4GB + 64GB, and moves up to $487 for the 6GB+128GB variant. A third variant called the Global Edition that can work with tons of carriers including CDMA networks in the US sports 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM and is priced at $516.

Samsung’s Note 7 has been discontinued but was priced at $850 which is way more expensive than even the global variant of the Mi Note 2. The S7 Edge is not cheap either. It starts at around $600 for the 32GB version and over $700 for the 32GB variant.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review: DESIGN and DISPLAY

When it comes to the design, we are looking at the device that has a gorgeous 5.5” 2K display. We all know that Samsung have had one of the best screens on the market and the S7 Edge is no exception. The panel that is covered by the Gorilla Glass 5, is sharp, vibrant, bright and definitely on of the best on any smartphone. 

You will be able to see this great screen even under water as the Galaxy S7 edge is IP68-certified, meaning that it can be used for 30 mins up to 1.5m under water. Also, it can survive a little bit of dust, too. I would say that is a huge advantage over the majority of the competition.

We have a really cool innovation – always-on display and this feature is really neat. Basically, what it does, it shows the clock, calendar and some useful stuff, and this feature uses a very low amount of energy. To be honest, it took me a few days to get used to it as I wanted to turn the display off manually but I really love this feature. 

As the name implies, the display has edges on both sides and it adds a lot of character to the design. Sometimes it even makes an impression that the display is bezel-less.

Of course, there is a functional part of those edges. For example, you can create shortcuts to some tasks, quickly access contacts, news, apps and so on. 

If you swipe your finger along the edge screen while the display is off, you’ll get some other useful info too.

On the front, we have a 5MP selfie shooter, notification LED and other usual stuff. On the bottom, there is a classic Samsung’s button layout – nicely backlit capacitive keys and the physical home button, which also doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

Speaking of which, it is very fast and accurate but I am disappointed that it does not work straight from the standby mode, meaning that you should press the home or power key first.

The back is made of another sheet of Gorilla Glass 5 and the edges of it are also slightly curved. I gotta tell you that those curves make a huge difference in terms of comfort and ergonomics while holding the phone in the hand. 

The camera has 12MP, which sounds like a downgrade but we have all sorts of tech going on here. It has a dual-pixel tech to assure crazy fast auto-focus and believe me, it is the fastest I’ve seen. Also, the camera has OIS, PDAF and a whopping very bright f/1.7 aperture. 

Next to the camera we have the LED flash and a heart rate monitor to help you track your exercise routines.  

The power button, which is on the right along with volume keys, which are on the left, are very clicky and responsive. 

On the bottom, we have the regular ports, the loudspeaker, and neither of them are covered by flaps despite waterproof properties of the phone. 

On the top, there is a secondary mic and the nano SIM and microSD card tray. Yes, Samsung finally brought a cheap storage expansion option and you can add up to 200GB of local storage.

It is quite an interesting choice that we don’t have the IR blaster anymore. Well, I’ve never used it anyway but it was cool knowing it was there on the Galaxy S6. 

Overall, the phone looks amazing and I love the design ot it. It screams premium and it sits comfortably in the hand despite being a device with 5.5”display. However, keep in mind that the glass back attracts fingerprints and smudges very quickly.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review: UI

When it comes to the UI, we have Samsung’s Touchwiz, which is built on top of Android 6.0 Marshmallow. 

If you’ve used a Samsung device before, you will feel pretty familiar with the user interface. Most importantly, everything is running smoothly most of the times and I didn’t have any lags.

We have a bit cartoonish looking icons, a lot of quick settings toggles and what has become usual to the South-Korean manufacturer, quite a lot of features and customisation options.

Just to name a few, you can quickly launch the camera by double clicking the home button. Also, you can trigger one handed operation if click the home button three times.

There is pop-up window mode or split-screen feature for those who can’t live without multitasking.

There are some other features too. Some of them may sound gimmicky, while others are even called experimental. 

Finally, you can customise your Galaxy device with a variety of different themes, wallpapers and so on.

All in all, the Touchwiz UI runs fast and fluid and I had a pleasant overall experience. However, it uses around 8GB of internal storage, which is too much I would say. 

Also, the RAM management is not yet perfect. Seriously, this is 4GB RAM phone and there is only 1.2GB of RAM free after killing all the background tasks? Hopefully, this is what Samsung is going to fix with the software update soon.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has a few hardware modifications but you can be rest assured that either model will have bleeding edge specifications.

My review unit is the EU model and it sports a home-brewed octa-core Exynos 8890 chip with the clock speeds of up to 2.6GHz, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage.

If you are wondering what this combo of specs is capable of, all 3D games just fly. There is no stutter or any skipped frames, the graphics look awesome and the games load amazingly fast. 

In addition, there is a dedicated Game Tools app that provides some convenient features like the ability to turn off alerts during the game or record the gameplay.

Also, the phone does not heat up at all even after extensive periods of gaming and that is thanks to the Volcano API and liquid-cooling system. 

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review: MULTIMEDIA

When it comes to multimedia consumption, the sound quality via earphones is near excellent and the volume output is loud. However, the external speaker could be slightly louder and it sounds a little bit muffled. I believe that may be due to its waterproof properties.

Once you fire up the camera app, you will be blown away by the blazing fast auto-focus speeds in any light. 

What we have here is typical Samsung, which brings quite a few settings and shooting modes, and you can even download more modes  if you wish. 

One thing I was really disappointed by is that the sensor uses a native 4:3 aspect ratio, meaning that the images will not be full screen if you shoot at the maximum resolution. 

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review: IMAGE QUALITY

When it comes to the actual image quality, it is definitely on of the best in class. The daylight pictures look sharp, have lots of detail, the colour look natural and other aspects like dynamic range and exposure and handled well. 

It is a similar story with indoor and macro shots as the camera manages to capture a great amount of detail despite worse lighting conditions.

The low-light camera performance is fantastic. It not only focuses very fast but also manages to produce great looking photos. Naturally, there is less detail but the level of it is still very good. Also, the noise levels are kept to minimum. The only shortcoming is that the auto post-processing leads to a slight yellow tint in some of the pictures.

The front facing camera takes very good selfies even in low light and that is thanks to the bright aperture.

Both 1080p and 4K videos look stunning. The footage is sharp and very detailed, the OIS does its job very well and the videos are one of the best I’ve seen.

The S7 Edge has a 3600mAh battery and I was curious how it performs with the always-on display.

I gotta tell you that I was quite impressed with the results. I could get over 5 hours of screen-on time while taking lots of pictures, shooting a lot 4k videos, gaming, browsing the web and so on. 

If you need to top up the battery, the phone charges up really fast and that is thanks to the fast charging feature. Also, there is an embedded wireless charging feature that helps cut a few wires.

So, there you have it, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. This is the best Samsung phone ever and definitely on of the best on the market. 

The design is really flashy, the curved screen with the always-on display feature is fantastic, the UI is running fast and the phone has one of the best specs currently available that can handle even the most demanding tasks without a sweat or overheating.

Also, the S7 Edge has awesome camera, a great battery life and yeah, this thing is fully waterproof.

On the other hand, the glass backplate is a huge fingerprint magnet, the UI takes a lot of storage space and uses lots of RAM, and the current state of software does not support Android 6.0’s adaptable storage.  Also, the camera sensor has a native 4:3 aspect ratio and oh boy, this phone is expensive. It costs around $800 and perhaps not everyone is going to buy it.

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is a fantastic phone and it will be one of the best devices out there for months ahead despite having a few shortcomings. Just remember, premium phone comes at a premium price.
