The rollout is currently limited to the UK but should be expanded to more regions pretty soon.

Carrying firmware version T736BXXU1BVC2, the update includes the February security patch and improves device stability and security (via SamMobile). You can also expect all of the One UI 4 + Android 12 goodies on it like dynamic wallpaper-based theming, new animations, updated widgets, redesigned quick settings, and system apps improvements.

Also, according to Samsung’s documentation, the new security patch fixes more than 50 privacy and security-related vulnerabilities.

If you reside in the UK, you may have already received the update. But if you haven’t, then you can also check for it manually by heading over to Settings > Software update and then downloading and installing it.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE was released in June 2021 with One UI 3.1.1 based on Android 11. It has since then hasn’t received any major update but today’s rollout changes that. The tablet comes with a 12.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1600 x 2560. Its Wi-Fi model is powered by the Snapdragon 778G chip while the 5G model gets the Snapdragon 750G.

For photography, you get a single 8MP camera at the rear and a 5MP camera at the front. The battery is sized 10,090mAh with support for 45W fast charging.

Design

If you want a tablet providing the best looks, you should go for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE which offers a better design. The device comes with narrower bezels around the display and a higher screen to body ratio. It has bigger dimensions because it has a wider display, but it is thinner than the 9th gen Apple iPad. Both the tablets have magnetic pins you can use to connect an external keyboard and they even support a stylus: the Apple Pencil for the former and the S Pen for the latter. The tablets come with an aluminum unibody design including an aluminum back and an aluminum frame, as well as a scratch resistant front glass.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE has a wide display with a 12.4-inch diagonal, and this is very important for those who need to use the tablet for productivity. But if you are looking for a display that provides better image quality, then the Apple iPad 9th gen is a better option. While the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE has a below-average TFT panel, the Apple iPad 9th gen has a better Retina IPS LCD display with superior color reproduction. The level of detail is not so different as both the tablets come with a 2K resolution, while the refresh rate is standard in both cases (60 Hz). Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE does not have a fingerprint reader, while the Apple iPad 9th gen has the Touch ID below the display which allows fingerprint unlocking. Both the tablets support a stylus for handwriting and drawing.

Specs & Software

The Apple iPad 9th gen is powered by the Apple A13 Bionic mobile platform: in case you do not know, it is the same chipset as the iPhone 11 series. The SoC is paired with 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB or 256 GB of internal storage depending on the chosen variant. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE comes in variants with two different chipsets: the 5G model has the Snapdragon 750G mobile platform, while the WiFi model has the Snapdragon 778G. No matter which chipset we are talking about: the Apple iPad 9th gen has better performance due to its strong SoC and the optimization of iPadOS. Further, iPadOS is a more advanced operating system than One UI when it comes to productivity and advanced usage scenarios.

Camera

The 8 MP rear camera found on the Apple iPad 9th gen is actually better than the 8 MP sensor of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE, no matter that the resolution is the same. The 12 MP front camera of the iPad 9th gen is even better and it is one of the best selfie cameras you can find on a tablet. The reason why the front camera is better than the rear camera is obvious: providing a higher quality during video calls, which is a very common activity among tablet users.

Battery

The battery capacities of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE and Apple iPad 9th gen are different, but there are no huge differences when it comes to battery life. The real difference is in the charging speeds: the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE charges a lot faster thanks to 45W fast charging.

Price

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE starts from €650/$755 in the global market, while Apple iPad 9th gen costs less than €400/$465. Due to the presence of iPadOS, the iPad 9th gen has a higher value for money and it wins this comparison, but it lacks 5G.

With the new One UI 3.1 build that Samsung has already begun to roll out, Galaxy Tab S7 series tablets will get access to the new Labs feature that was earlier exclusive to One UI 3.1.1 on the Galaxy Z 3 foldable series. The Labs section brings support of multi-window for apps that don’t natively support it, along with a new persistent taskbar that would further enhance productivity.

The multi-window feature makes all the apps open in either pop-up view or split-screen, making it a delight to multitask on the tab. Additionally, with the persistent taskbar, users can now have their favorite apps pinned to it that’d allow them to switch apps without having to go back to the app drawer.

Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+ owners will get the new update that goes by the firmware version T87xXXU2BUC6 and is being rolled out in multiple regions. Galaxy Tab S7 FE isn’t far behind and is also getting the new build with version T73xXXU1AUH6. Users can head to their update centers to find the notification of the new firmware update and in case they don’t see any, fret not, it shouldn’t take long.

Despite it is cheaper, it still comes with flagship-class specifications. We can not tell the same about the newly-announced Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE, an affordable version of the Galaxy Tab S7 series, but this tablet still has its own advantages. Another affordable tablet with flagship-class specifications is the iPad Air 2020, even though it is a bit older. Which tablet is worth buying now? This comparison will hopefully clear your ideas in regards.

Design

The Apple iPad Air is more elegant and beautiful than its two rivals by Samsung and Huawei because it has a thinner profile, it is lightweight and it has an aluminum body. It also comes with a fingerprint reader, unlike the Huawei MatePad 11 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is comfortable because it has a magnetic slot for the S Pen.

Display

If you need the best display, you should opt for the iPad Air 2020. Its Liquid Retina IPS LCD display has a better color reproduction, it supports a wider color gamut and the True-tone technology which adapts the colors to the environment. The iPad Air also comes with a 4:3 aspect ratio which is great for viewing images and reading. The second place goes to the Huawei MatePad 11 2021 packing an IPS display with the highest refresh rate: 120 Hz. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is inferior with its TFT display coming with a standard 60 Hz refresh rate. All of these tablets have a Quad HD+ resolution.

Hardware/Software

The most advanced performance is provided by the Apple iPad Air 2020: not only it has a stronger Apple A14 Bionic chipset, but it also comes with a well-optimized operating system able to guarantee higher stability and speed. But the Huawei MatePad 11 remains a flagship tablet with its Snapdragon 865 processor, up to 128 GB of internal storage, and 6 GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is just a mid-ranger with its Snapdragon 750G. But there is an important thing to note: iPad Air 2020 does not support 5G, while Huawei MatePad 11 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE do.

Camera

The iPad Air 2020 provides the best camera: we are talking about a 12 MP sensor with a bright f/1.8 focal aperture and 4K video recording up to 60 fps. The selfie camera is great as well with its 7 MP resolution, HDR, and 1080p video recording at 60 fps. The Huawei MatePad 11 comes right after with a 13 MP rear camera paired with an 8 MP front camera, while the camera found on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is a bit disappointing with its 8 MP resolution.

Battery

The most important pro of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is the battery: with its capacity of 10,090 mAh it is a lot bigger than its rivals and it provides a great battery life. Further, it supports a faster 45W charging technology.

Price

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE and Apple iPad Air are priced at about €650/$788 in the global market, while Huawei MatePad 11 starts from €400/$485 in the Chinese market and it is still not available globally. Overall, the iPad Air 2020 looks like a better choice due to its better camera, display, and operating system (at least for those who want to work with their tablet).
