New Samsung Kiosk with Windows operating system launched in Korea

Samsung Electronics has launched a new version of the Samsung Kiosk in its home market in South Korea. The new Samsung Kiosk runs on the Windows operating system and offers an all-in-one service platform. The Samsung Kiosk offers product selection, ordering, and payment. It can be deployed in restaurants, cafes, pharmacies, and a host of other applications.

The Samsung Kiosk was originally released in 2021 and ran on Tizen OS. The range of options for the model has now been expanded with Windows OS support for the refreshed Kiosk. The product has a model name KMC-W and is based on Windows 10 IoT Enterprise. It has a 24-inch touch display and is equipped with the 11th-generation Intel Core processor. The processor offers stability and improved performance while memory/ storage is offered in the form of 256GB SSD and 8GB Mounted memory.

The Samsung Kiosk offers all the essential functions of a kiosk in a single device. Content management and payment can be delivered on the kiosk which also has a receipt printer, QR/ barcode scanner, NFC, and Wi-Fi support. The new Samsung Kiosk comes in three variants namely table type, stand type, and wall-mounted type. It can therefore be used in a wide variety of scenarios and environments.

The new Samsung Kiosk has already garnered international acclaim. It was selected as the best product at Integrated System Europe (ISE) 2023. To put the achievement in perspective, ISE is Europe’s largest display exhibition.

Samsung will supply 1,000 units of the kiosk to Yanolja Cloud, a global travel solutions company. The Samsung Kiosk is expected to have a global presence in a variety of places like hotels, restaurants, and leisure places. Yanolja Cloud says Samsung Kiosks have been supplied to more than 60 of its partners in 35 countries. There are no details yet on the global retail plans and pricing of the new Samsung Kiosk.

Back in February 2021, Samsung unveiled its innovative ordering solution called Samsung Kiosk, which enables shop owners to deploy a non-face-to-face ordering and payment platform placed at the shop to limit contact between customers and staff. It was introduced to Samsung’s home market of Korea but was projected to roll out to selected countries by mid-year. Samsung has now launched the product in 12 countries.

The Samsung Kiosk could be viewed as part of Samsung’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, which had ravaged the world since 2020, and has now entered its third wave in parts of the world. The 12 countries selected for the rollout of the Samsung Kiosk are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Singapore, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Samsung will further expand the coverage to other countries and regions subsequently.

The Samsung Kiosk is a mobile all-in-one, onsite ordering and payment platform for shops to take orders from customers and receive payment. It has a 24-inch interactive display with a modular design incorporating a wide array of payment options for seamless shop operations. Already, the Samsung Kiosk is compatible or accepts payments via major payment platforms like Mastercard, Visa, Europay, and others. Other features of the Samsung Kiosk are QR and barcode readers with printing support via the built-in printer, a hygienically safe display with certified Antimicrobial Coating, and a shatterproof film.

On the software side of the Samsung Kiosk, it operates a Linux-based Operating System, which is open-source and powered by Tizen. In addition, the OS has support for a large number of third-party applications.

Samsung hopes that its innovative mobile Kiosk platform will have good reception in the selected countries and provide a creative and seamless option for shop owners to limit physical contact with their customers and enhance the efficiency of their overall service processes. Its payment versatility will also endear it to these developed markets.

Samsung has unveiled a smart ordering solution known as Samsung Kiosk. The product is a large display that stands in the vertical direction and affords store owners the opportunity to deploy non-face-to-face ordering and payment in order to limit contacts between staff and patrons. The product has been introduced in the domestic market with a demonstration carried out at a café in Korea. Samsung says it would be launched for the global market in the first half of the year.

Samsung Kiosk is an all-in-one product that allows customers to select products, place an order, and make payments at different points of sales such as restaurants, cafes, pharmacies, convenience stores, and marts. The smart display utilizes a high-performance SoC (System-on-Chip) which enables it to manage contents and payments without the need for a separate PC. The product can multi-functional product can be used as a card reader, receipt printer, and QR/barcode scanner. It also comes with NFC (Near Field Communication) which is optional, and Wi-Fi for contactless payments and other services.

The Samsung Kiosk packs a 24-inch touchscreen display and will be available in white color only. There are three mount methods; it can be mounted on a tabletop, can be placed on a stand, and can be mounted on the wall, depends on what suits the store. The table-top mount doesn’t require any other accessories but we believe the floor stand and wall brackets will be sold separately.

Further, the touch screen used on the Samsung Kiosk is designed to promote hygiene as it has a special coating with antibacterial properties of up to 99.99% efficacy. Tests carried out in line with the Japanese Industrial Standard Z 2801 test method show that the coating can inhibit the growth of E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus by 99.99%.

In addition, Samsung’s antimicrobial coating technology passed the human toxicity evaluation test by the U.S. safety standards organization Underwriters Laboratories (UL). The antibacterial coating is made from Zinc Pyrithione (ZnP), a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved substance that can also be used in food packaging materials. The material doesn’t lead to a compromise in the image quality as the display still outputs clear image quality by supporting a high transmittance of 90% or more without being easily discolored by oxygen or sulfur components.

The smart display is powered by the Tizen OS, a Linux-based open-source operating system utilized by Samsung on its TVs and smartwatches. This makes it easy for developers to develop various software applications that can be used for stores. The Kiosk also runs Samsung Knox, a multi-layered security solution designed to securely protect hardware, payment platforms, and applications from external threats such as hacking.

Samsung kiosk managers can manage kiosks installed in stores nationwide in real-time through the Magic Info Remote Management function, and when a problem occurs, it can identify symptoms and take necessary measures through remote control, enabling efficient store operation.

Samsung also disclosed that it is selling the Samsung kiosks through a partnership with Fiserv, the world’s number one payment and financial service solution provider. The Korean tech giant also plans to expand its sales to overseas markets such as Asia and Australia in the first half of the year.
