According to a Counterpoint Research report, the South Korean tech giant managed to see a 9 percent growth in sales year on year, despite the global smartphone sales falling by 8 percent year on year. During this time, the brand managed to capture nearly a quarter of the global smartphone market. This makes the highest ever single month market share for the company, since April 2017. Notably, the growth in April 2022 also helped the brand lead the global smartphone market for the third consecutive months this year.

Interestingly, we had previously reported on Samsung also achieving a record market share in Q1 2022. This record was also one of the highest ever market share in 5 years as well. Research Director Tarun Pathak stated that “Samsung captured close to one fourth of the global smartphone market in April 2022, reaching its highest single month share in the last five years. This was driven by the strong performance of the S22 series in the premium segment and the A series in the mid segment.”

As we move on to the second half of this year, Samsung is believed to retain its throne in the smartphone market in Q2 2022. The company is already the leader in the foldable smartphone segment, and still has a stronghold in the global smartphone market overall. So stick around for more, as it remains to be seen how the smartphone market develops in the coming months.

The news arrives from a StrategyAnalytics report, which stated that the global smartphone shipments fell by 11 percent year on year to 314 million units in Q1 2022. However, despite the decline, the South Kroean tech giant managed to achieve a notable market share of 24 percent during the first quarter. On the other hand, Apple came in second with an 18 percent market share, followed by Xiaomi, OPPO (including OnePlus), and Vivo that rounded up the top five list.

According to Woody Oh , Director at at Strategy Analytics, “We estimate Samsung shipped 75 million smartphones and topped the global smartphone market with a healthy 24 percent share in Q1 2022. It is the vendor’s highest first quarter performance by market share since 2017. Demand was strong for the newly launched flagship Galaxy S22 series, especially the higher priced S22 Ultra model. Meanwhile, Samsung continue to ramp up mass market A series in multiple markets.”

In other words, the company’s smartphone across multiple ranges saw great success across the globe. But as of right now, the global handset market is expect to further contract by around 1 to 2 percent in 2022. This is likely due to the effects of geopolitical issues, component shortages, price inflation, exchange rate volatility, and the ongoing pandemic as well.

According to Akash Balachandran, a senior research analyst at IDC, “With its large portfolio of models in the entry-level and mid-range price bands, Samsung not only maintained its leading position but also captured share lost by Huawei.”

Apple arrived second in the region and had a market share of 15 percent in terms of units, which was down from 18 percent for the second quarter of this year. The drop was likely due to the delay of its iPhone 12 series launch. Chinese smartphone vendors also followed close behind the Cupertino based giant with Huawei accounting for 13 percent of the market share, and Xiaomi holding 12 percent of the Gulf smartphone market.

However, things change in terms of value, with Apple leading with a 46.3 percent market share, followed by Samsung with a 30.8 percent market share in Q3 2020. Notably, the overall GCC smartphone market also declined by 0.9 percent quarter on quarter, down to 4.16 million units. In terms of value, the market fell by 11.6 percent quarter on quarter to 1.16 billion US Dollars.

Out of the entire Gulf region, Saudi Arabia accounted for 52.6 percent of all smartphone shipments in the GCC region in the third quarter of 2020. The UAE (United Arab Emirates) arrived second with 24.1 percent of the total market. Ramazan Yavuz, a senior research manager at IDC added that, “Brands like Apple and Samsung will also post a strong performance in the upcoming quarters with newly released models in their portfolios. Chinese vendors, focused on driving penetration in the region, will continue their marketing investments, all of which will translate into a well-performing market in the short to mid-term.”

The South Korean tech giant has beaten Apple in the US and Xiaomi in the Indian market. Furthermore, the company has even manged to narrow the gap with the Cupertino based giant in terms of smartphone profit share. In Q3 2020, Samsung achieved a profit share of 32.6 percent, which is significantly up from 18.8 percent from back in 2019. This also marks its highest profit share in over six years, since it saw a 37.9 percent profit share back in Q2 2014.

Editor’s Pick: Redmi Watch and Mi Watch Lite appear on Bluetooth SIG Certification suggesting a Global launch

Notably, Apple still remains the world’s most profitable smartphone brand with a 60.5 percent profit share. Although, this figure is down from 66.9 percent from last year. The company saw a fall in operating margins with the release of the new iPhone 12 series. On the other hand, Samsung noted a growth in operating margin, rising from 11 percent in Q3 2019 to 14 percent in the same quarter this year, as per a SamMobile report based on Strategy Analytical research.

Similarly, Samsung Electronics’ global smartphone revenue share was 22.6 percent, while Apple had a revenue share of 29.5 percent during the same period. Although, the former’s overall market share was higher, coming in at 21.9 percent. This is higher than the market share of Chinese tech giants like Huawei, with 14.1 percent, and 12.7 percent market share of Xiaomi. Apple slipped down to fourth position during the third quarter of this year, having a market share of just 11.9 percent.

According to data compiled by Strategic Analytics, the Korean tech giant saw its share in China’s smartphone market slide to 0.8% in the fourth quarter of 2017 from a lofty of 20% share it commanded five years ago. The data also revealed Samsung shipped 9.8 million smartphones in China in Q4 2017 and this is noted to be the first time the Korean giant’s quarterly shipments fell below the 10 million-unit mark.

A breakdown of the statistics reveals that Sammy’s market share in China fell from 3.1% in the first quarter of 2017 to 2.7% in the second quarter and it went further south to 2% in the third quarters. For the entire 2017, the Korean vendor had a 2.1% share in China, which is just about one-fifth of the figures it posted in 2013. This year may not see an improvement despite the launch of the Galaxy S9 models as the company’s market share is expected to remain at 0.8% in Q1 2018. The hefty price tags of the models are likely going to discourage a lot of fans in China from picking up one. The midrange market has also slipped out of the grip of the Korean phone maker.

Related: Xiaomi & Samsung in Subtle War of Words Over Who Sold More Units in Q4 2017 in India

The same thing applies to India where the company also face stiff competition in the midrange segment from Chinese OEMs like Huawei, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi whose smartphones have equally high quality and are better priced than Samsung models. The company has been the top phone maker in India for six years but last year saw Xiaomi outperform the tech giant in the fourth quarter. Samsung share also fell from26.2% to 23.9%. Samsung still remains the largest smartphone maker globally but observers are of the opinion that the global market leader faces the prospects of a further drop in the Indian and Chinese market in the near future.
