<p>A newly sighted patent from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung </a>has just offered us a look into how we might interact with our gadgets through smart rings. Typically, a smart ring is just a seamless health tracking device that blends fashion and technology. But Samsung&#8217;s future Galaxy Ring might also have it work as an input device to control other gadgets.</p>

<h2>Samsung Galaxy Ring with gesture input might be a game-changer</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="525" height="428" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Ring-Patent.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung Galaxy Ring Patent" class="wp-image-671881" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Ring-Patent.jpg 525w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Ring-Patent-300x245.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Ring-Patent-515x420.jpg 515w" sizes="(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /></figure></div>

<p>The South Korean tech giant filed a patent with <a href="https://patentscope.wipo.int/search/en/detail.jsf?docId=WO2025023564" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WIPO </a>showcasing a smart ring that can control other devices. At the moment, Samsung only has <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/10/22/samsung-galaxy-ring-launched-in-india-for-rs-38999-read-color-size-options/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">one smart ring under its belt</a>, with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/12/26/samsung-galaxy-ring-2-support-page/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Ring 2 reportedly being in development</a>. The original Galaxy Ring could track your heart rate, sleep, and other biometrics and send the info to the connected smartphone in the Samsung Health app.</p>

<p>This is a great way of keeping track of your health, which suits those who do not prefer a smartwatch. However, the patent hints that Samsung might be bringing additional functionality to this formula soon. The patent description and sketches show a smart ring user interacting with other connected devices wireless. It appears that this future Galaxy Ring can communicate between two devices, with the sketches showing a laptop and a tablet.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="994" height="617" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-73.png?x44794" alt="Samsung Galaxy Ring" class="wp-image-656138" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-73.png 994w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-73-300x186.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-73-768x477.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-73-696x432.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-73-677x420.png 677w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-73-356x220.png 356w" sizes="(max-width: 994px) 100vw, 994px" /><figcaption>Samsung Galaxy Ring</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The patented smart ring can be seen as capable of moving things from one display to another. This functions similar to Apple&#8217;s connected ecosystem. Samsung&#8217;s S Pen also offered similar functionality, but this appears to be more seamless, especially thanks to the intuitive design of the Galaxy Ring. It is unclear if the brand is actually working on such a product or is just covering all bases but this does appear to be the next step in Galaxy Ring&#8217;s evolution.</p>

With such a strong presence, the company obviously has thousands of patents to its name and the list keeps on growing.</p>
<p>Last year, the South Korean company was the second-biggest applicant for the smart home patents. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/5g">5G</a> is being seen as the next big thing in technology and Samsung holds hundreds of patents for this new communication technology.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-281148 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung Logo" width="730" height="486" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung.jpg 730w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>Now, as <a href="http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=74626">per the report</a> from <em>Business Korea</em>, Samsung is secured around 7,000 patents this year and there are still a few months left before the year ends, meaning the number of patents for the year could grow in the coming months.</p>
<p>The report adds that Samsung owns a large majority of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/patent">patents</a> in the USA and is leveraging around 80,633 patents for various technologies. The next major region for the brand is its home country South Korea with 44,271 patents, followed by Europe with 39,288 patents. In China and Japan, Samsung owns 18,879 and 9,584 patents, respectively. In other regions, the company holds about 13,161 patents.</p>
<p>Overall, the South Korean giant holds more than 200,000 patents globally, which cover technology ranging from semiconductors and communications to smartphones and Smart televisions. Samsung is also the world&#8217;s leading spender when it comes to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/research-and-development">Research &amp; Development</a>, resulting in new patents as the company keeps developing new technologies.</p>

Currently, one of the more popular ones is the punch hole selfie camera format. Now, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a> is getting creative with this type of selfie shooter that it employs on its flagship devices as it has patented a new device that depicts a status indicator on the punch hole camera.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-321601 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/smartphone-camera-status-indicator-1024x711.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="1024" height="711" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/smartphone-camera-status-indicator-1024x711.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/smartphone-camera-status-indicator-1024x711-300x208.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/smartphone-camera-status-indicator-1024x711-768x533.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/smartphone-camera-status-indicator-1024x711-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/smartphone-camera-status-indicator-1024x711-218x150.jpg 218w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/smartphone-camera-status-indicator-1024x711-696x483.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/smartphone-camera-status-indicator-1024x711-605x420.jpg 605w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Samsung Electronics had filed five design patents with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) back in 2019. These patents all focused on the selfie camera, which was surrounded by a graphical interface. The interface serves the purpose of revealing the status of the task the user is performing and more. An example given in the patent description describes its use in a time lapse video, where the status indicator will display the progress status of the camera timer.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/05/08/xiaomi-mi-10-for-rs-49999-661-brings-108mp-quad-cameras-90hz-display-and-snapdragon-865/">Xiaomi Mi 10 for Rs. 49,999 (~$661) brings 108MP quad cameras, 90Hz display and Snapdragon 865</a></strong></h6>
<p>While there had been rumors regarding the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-note-20/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy Note 20</a> series arriving with an under display camera, the viability of the technology is still unknown. So, it is likely that the flagship series will launch in the latter half of this year with a punch hole format. Hence, we might see a status indicator around its single or even dual selfie setup on the front, as depicted within the patented designs themselves. The status indicator around the camera is in various shapes like square, ovaloid, and even circular.</p>

<p>The graphical interface also indicates other statuses like the downloads. This could be in the form of a status bar that fills up and progresses according to the live download a user may have in the background. This design isn&#8217;t completely unheard of, as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/meizu-17/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Meizu 17</a> also uses this in a certain manner, like having the punch hole camera to act as a battery indicator. So, we may see it in the near future, although, this is just a patent and has yet to be confirmed officially. Thus, take it with a grain of salt.</p>

Its offerings have been extremely popular in recent times and are also well known for their displays. The company has just released its latest flagship <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-s20/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy S20</a> series, but now reports suggest that the company is working on a new form of display for its future releases.</p>
<p>Samsung had first revealed its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/amoled/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AMOLED</a> display back in 2008, since then, the company&#8217;s technology has grown exponentially in popularity among other OEMs as well. This technology even brought out other types of screens like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/super-amoled/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Super AMOLED</a> and Dynamic AMOLED. The latter can be found in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-s10/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy S10</a> and even the latest Galaxy S20 series of flagships.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_305427" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-305427" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-305427 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S20.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung Galaxy S20" width="500" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S20.jpg 500w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S20-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S20-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S20-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-305427" class="wp-caption-text">Samsung Galaxy S20</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Thus, it is not a new endeavor Samsung is reportedly undertaking as innovation is one of the characteristics of a successful smartphone brand. So, we can expect an entirely new technology being developed by the South Korean tech giant or another new and improved spin off in the AMOLED display department.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/03/13/huawei-wearable-consistent-growth-for-2-years/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei’s wearable arm has registered 100% growth for two consecutive years: Richard Yu</a></strong></h6>
<p>Earlier this month, Samsung filed a trademark application with the US Patent And Trademark Office under something called &#8220;Samsung PIFF.&#8221; This trademark has also made an appearance on the World Intellectual Property Organization&#8217;s database and is categorized under Class 9. Under this, the only thing described in the patent is the simple term, &#8220;Display for smartphones.”</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_147006" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-147006" style="width: 720px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-147006 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Galaxy-Note8-Star-Pink.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note8 Star Pink" width="720" height="480" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Galaxy-Note8-Star-Pink.jpg 720w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Galaxy-Note8-Star-Pink-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-147006" class="wp-caption-text">Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Featuring A Super AMOLED Display</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>A notable aspect of the filing was that it was done from Samsung Electronics and not Samsung Display. Hence, it is almost certainly a new breed of display that may soon be seen in future smartphones or the upcoming flagship <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-note-20/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy Note 20</a> series. Take <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Android</a> for example, apart from various different custom UI skins, the vanilla Android OS has been featuring the same few buttons to minimize, close and relaunch apps for multitasking. But now, a recently surfaced patent from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a> reimagines the entire functionality.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_307390" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-307390" style="width: 490px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-307390 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Patent.png?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="490" height="361" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Patent.png 490w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Patent-300x221.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Patent-80x60.png 80w" sizes="(max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-307390" class="wp-caption-text">Samsung patent reveals a Windows like multitasking/minimizing and closing function</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>The new patent details of a new method which bears a striking resemblance to Microsoft&#8217;s Windows functions. Looking at the images provided in the patent, the iconic Windows close and minimize keys can be seen alongside a multitask function. Samsung had initially filed this patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on 16th October 2017, which has now been finally granted.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/02/27/huawei-and-samsung-smartphones-may-use-gan-to-charge-smartphones-even-faster-in-the-near-future/">Huawei and Samsung smartphones may use GaN to charge smartphones even faster in the near future</a></strong></h6>
<p>According to the patent, the South Korean tech giant may be working on a Windows like buttons on the top corners of a smartphone. Three distinct buttons can be observed that line the round edges and serve the purpose of closing an app, minimizing it or even bring up other apps in the background. The device that carries such a feature in the patent seems like a tablet device. Meaning, that such a UI could potentially be seen in the near future on Galaxy Tab devices or other large screen products.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_307391" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-307391" style="width: 671px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-307391 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Patent-1.png?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="671" height="702" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Patent-1.png 671w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Patent-1-287x300.png 287w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Samsung-Patent-1-401x420.png 401w" sizes="(max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-307391" class="wp-caption-text">The patent reveals the new UI feature on a larger screen device</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Currently, Samsung uses the proprietary One UI skin on its Galaxy smartphones and tablets. This was an upgrade from its TouchWiz UI. So, a future version or successor to the One UI could possibly arrive with such a feature on both smartphones and tablets. This could potentially raise the productivity on either category of gadgets and will make switching between apps much more smooth, potentially.</p>

The patent describes this technology as a &#8220;bent edge display.&#8221;</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_306447" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-306447" style="width: 940px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-306447 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/sampat2.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="940" height="819" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/sampat2.jpg 940w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/sampat2-300x261.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/sampat2-768x669.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/sampat2-696x606.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/sampat2-482x420.jpg 482w" sizes="(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-306447" class="wp-caption-text">Samsung patent reveals a waterfall bending display with a curved edge through which cutouts for physical buttons can be observed</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Notably, the waterfall display patented by Samsung resembles the technology which can be found in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei-mate-30-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei Mate 30 Pro</a>. The design revealed in the patents showcases a smartphone that has the power button and volume rockers protruding out from the screen. To make this possible, Samsung has to make cutouts of the same in the glass as well, unlike Huawei that simply added virtual buttons on the smartphones.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/02/21/htc-to-launch-its-first-5g-smartphone-in-2020-expects-growth-in-vr-apps/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">HTC to launch its first 5G Smartphone in 2020, expects growth in VR Apps</a></strong></h6>
<p>Interestingly, Samsung covers all bases with this patent and even leaves the implications of other technology that may be included in future smartphones. One of which is the possible holographic projector that displays stereoscopic images. Other descriptions include the EMG sensor (electromyography), electroencephalogram sensor (EED), electrocardiogram  (ECG) sensor and a fingerprint scanner as well.</p>
<p>Historically, Samsung releases two flagship series in a year. The Galaxy Note lineup typically follows the Galaxy S series and includes certain features that are missed out on the former due to price or technological constraints. This also allows Samsung to cope and adapt to any new technological breakthrough and include it in the latest premium smartphone as well.</p>

<p>As of right now, this report is still unconfirmed and we will have to wait for more information to make any concrete statements. It is still too early for Samsung to make any official announcements so stay tuned for any possible leaks and or rumors that is likely to arrive before the launch.</p>

It will help combat fake fingerprints and will increase the overall security of an in-screen fingerprint module. As according to some documents from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), it will help to identify the fraudulent fingerprints.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-213833 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Samsung-Patent-US226139443-img-1-400x837.png?x44794" alt="samsung patent" width="400" height="837" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Samsung-Patent-US226139443-img-1-400x837.png 400w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Samsung-Patent-US226139443-img-1-400x837-143x300.png 143w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></p>
<p>To identify the fake fingerprints, it will adjust light and will take second measurement to authenticate the fingerprint. It will bring multiple time authentication, where the first will take place if the sensor found an external object. Thereafter, the second will proceed with more light to check for the authenticity of fingerprint. Later, the two scans will be compared, and if any variation comes, the authentication will be rejected.</p>
<p>Nowadays, fingerprint scanners have become an essential part of the smartphone&#8217;s security. It is much convenient, easy and fast to use than the primitive authentication methods like PIN, password and pattern input. It is more reliable than the new face recognition system which is in its earlier stages right now.</p>

</ul>
<p>With the increased use of an in-display fingerprint scanners, security thefts have risen. Users are now more prone to fake or &#8220;forged&#8221; fingerprints. In order to control the security lapses, new security measures are the need of an hour. We hope the new Samsung patent will protect against fake fingerprints and will help to tackle the issue of &#8220;forged&#8221; fingerprints in future.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-213834 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Samsung-Patent-US226139443-img-6-400x464.png?x44794" alt="samsung pixel" width="400" height="464" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Samsung-Patent-US226139443-img-6-400x464.png 400w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Samsung-Patent-US226139443-img-6-400x464-259x300.png 259w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></p>
<p>If the patent gets approved on time, then we could be able to see it working on the <a href="//www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-s10/">Galaxy S10</a>. It is a progression in the available technology of fingerprint scanners. We hope to see some more developments like this from Samsung in the near future.</p>
<p>What do you think? Do we need more secured fingerprint sensors?</p>
