For that, the South Korean giant had shortlisted two potential locations.</p>
<p>Now, the company has officially confirmed that it has chosen a site close to the city of Tylor in Texas for its new chip manufacturing plant. For this, Samsung will be making an investment of $17 billion &#8212; its biggest-ever in the United States.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-300041 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="1000" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-696x348.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-840x420.jpg 840w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>The plant is expected to create some 2,000 technology industry jobs, with construction starting early next year. It is expected to be operational by the second half of 2024.</p>
<p>Kinam Kim, chief executive of Samsung electronics device solutions said:<em> &#8220;With greater manufacturing capacity, we will be able to better serve the needs of our customers and contribute to the stability of the global <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/semiconductor">semiconductor</a> supply chain.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>It has also been announced from the governor&#8217;s office that the company would get a $27 million grant for creating jobs in the state. Samsung is one of the world&#8217;s largest <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/chip-manufacturing">manufacturers of chips</a> with more than 20,000 employees across the US.</p>
<p>The new chips made at this new Texas facility will be used in a range of technologies and devices, including mobile phones, 5G, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence, among others.</p>
<p>Earlier, a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/09/07/texas-offer-samsung-large-property-tax-breaks-chip-plant/">proposed resolution</a> posted on the Taylor city’s website showed that for the land Samsung will use, it is set to be offered a grant equivalent to 92.5% of assessed property tax for 10 years, 90% for the following 10 years, and then 85% in the 10 years after that.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://www.techradar.com/in/news/samsungs-display-arm-begins-oled-panel-production-at-noida-plant" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TechRadar</em> </a>report, the South Korean tech giant is starting the production of OLED panels for its smartphones in the Noida factory. As per a spokesperson from the company&#8217;s display unit, &#8220;Some of the production lines starts to manufacture&#8221; in the plant in India. Furthermore, the brand is also planning on soon start the production of making IT display panels as well at this factory.</p>
<p>Notably, this would mark the first time the company has made any display manufacturing is being done in India. This is also in line with the nation&#8217;s plans on becoming a global hub for smartphone and related technologies manufacturing. The Samsung Display&#8217;s Noida plant will supply components to its the brand&#8217;s smartphone unit, for the Galaxy range of handsets that will be sold within the region. For those unaware, the Indian smartphone market is one of the largest in the world and is also a key region for the company.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-366934 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-90hz-oled-laptop-display.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung 90Hz OLED Display for Laptop" width="2500" height="1667" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-90hz-oled-laptop-display.jpg 2500w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-90hz-oled-laptop-display-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-90hz-oled-laptop-display-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-90hz-oled-laptop-display-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-90hz-oled-laptop-display-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-90hz-oled-laptop-display-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-90hz-oled-laptop-display-630x420.jpg 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-90hz-oled-laptop-display-1920x1280.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 2500px) 100vw, 2500px" /></p>
<p>Thus, sourcing and assembling its devices within the country would also help lower its costs by avoiding import duties by shipping components from overseas. With this move, the company is set to invest $705.75 million in the project and also hopes to create about 1,300 jobs in the region. Recently, the smartphone maker even saw a breakthrough with its OLED panels, which now has lowered power consumption by automatically adjusting the display&#8217;s refresh rate. This can save power by about 22 percent compared to existing smartphone displays.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-152954 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/samsung-logo.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="594" height="396" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/samsung-logo.jpg 594w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/samsung-logo-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px" /></p>
<p>At the moment, Samsung Corning has two factories in its home country, with one in Gumi and another factory at Asan. The Gumi facility has been producing target materials that are utilized to make thin films to coat displays and solar panels. The site also worked to manufacture coat liquid crystal displays, organic light emitting diode (OLED), and even touch screen panels in the display department.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/15/oppo-reno4-se-launch-date-is-september-21-reservations-listings-reveal-variants-and-color-options/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OPPO Reno4 SE launch date is September 21; Reservations listings reveal variants and color options</a></strong></h6>
<p>Samsung Corning Advanced Glass had first acquired the business from Samsung Corning Precision Materials back in 2014. However, a person close to the matter claimed that the South Korean tech giant plans on now focus solely on OLED displays. Since the Asan facility is already producing the glass for OLEDs, the company has decided to sell its Gumi factory.</p>
<p>The company is now clearly focusing on its OLED panel business. <p>Previously, Samsung Electronics had already sent 200 engineers to the Xian plant last month. Furthermore, the new workers being sent to China will be exempted from the mandatory 14 days of isolation. This is made possible through the new &#8220;fast-track&#8221; entry, which was approved between South Korea and China. Although, these workers will be quarantined for at least three days and testings to ensure there are no positive infection cases being brought in.</p>

Now, the company is planning on further expanding its latter department by investing $500 million to set up a display manufacturing plant in India.</p>
<p>The South Korean tech giant will set up the new plant on the outskirts of New Delhi, the capital of India. This arrives after Samsung officially disclosed the sizeable investment and plans in a filing with Indian regulatory bodies. The plant&#8217;s primary focus is to produce displays that will be fitted in a wide range of devices including smartphones, and other IoT gadgets.</p>
<figure id="attachment_262376" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-262376" style="width: 600px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-262376 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/galaxy-s10-series.jpg?x44794" alt="samsung Galaxy S10" width="600" height="525" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/galaxy-s10-series.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/galaxy-s10-series-300x263.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/galaxy-s10-series-480x420.jpg 480w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-262376" class="wp-caption-text">Samsung Galaxy S10 with the company&#8217;s AMOLED display technology</figcaption></figure>
<p>According to the filing, Samsung is setting up a display manufacturing plant in Noida by allocating some of the lands for its existing plant. This plant was claimed to be the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/07/09/samsung-world-largest-mobile-factory-india/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">world&#8217;s largest smartphone manufacturing plant and was opened in 2018 with a $700 million</a> investment. With the new plant, Samsung will be even less reliant on importing its own technologies from other countries and can source its own components locally, bypassing tariffs and customs duties.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/20/xiaomi-mi-10-pro-5g-real-life-images-reveals-108mp-quad-cameras-and-punch-hole-display/">Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro 5G real life images reveals 108MP quad cameras and punch-hole display</a></strong></h6>
<p>The new display manufacturing plant also boosts the production capacity which will largely benefit from the Indian Government&#8217;s tax benefits and subsidies on manufacturing locally. India is currently the world&#8217;s second largest smartphone market which the Government recognizes and thus provides incentives to OEMs to set up their manufacturing and assembly plants locally.</p>

<p>Notably, Samsung is the second most popular brand in the Southeast Asian country. However, it is expected to be overtaken by Chinese brand Realme in the fourth quarter of 2019, according to analysts. Thus, the move might help Samsung price its Galaxy offerings more aggressively in the near future to stay more relevant in the current smartphone trends as Chinese tech giants like Xiaomi are becoming increasingly more popular in the nation.</p>

The plant located in the Guangdong province of China first started producing phones on December 1992. It is presently the only functional Samsung production plant in China and around June this year, the company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/07/samsung-scales-down-production-and-workforce-at-its-last-smartphone-plant-in-china/">scaled down production at the plant</a> with reports of workers getting laid off.</p>
<figure id="attachment_218697" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-218697" style="width: 1114px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Samsung-Galaxy-A9s-and-Galaxy-A6s_.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-218697" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Samsung-Galaxy-A9s-and-Galaxy-A6s_.png?x44794" alt="Samsung Galaxy A9s and Galaxy A6s_" width="1114" height="558" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Samsung-Galaxy-A9s-and-Galaxy-A6s_.png 1114w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Samsung-Galaxy-A9s-and-Galaxy-A6s_-300x150.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Samsung-Galaxy-A9s-and-Galaxy-A6s_-768x385.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Samsung-Galaxy-A9s-and-Galaxy-A6s_-1024x513.png 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1114px) 100vw, 1114px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-218697" class="wp-caption-text">Samsung Galaxy A9s and Galaxy A6s</figcaption></figure>
<p>The steady rise to prominence of local phone manufacturers in China signalled the decline of Samsung phones in what was one of its strongholds. Samsung controlled more than 20% share of the market in the hay days but as Chinese brands continue to surge in growth, the Korean company continued to lose market share. The local OEMs like OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi and others were able to gain ground against the global market leader by offering premium models at affordable prices. Samsung’s market share in China was below 1% as at the end of 2018.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/01/first-samples-from-the-100mp-mi-mix-alpha-is-here-we-are-not-impressed">First Samples from the 108MP Mi Mix Alpha is here &amp; we are not impressed!</a></strong></h6>
<p>In recent times, Samsung has made efforts to reclaim its lost glory in the Chinese market and other markets like India where Chinese OEMs have grabbed a chunk of the market share for her hands. The company recently shifted its focus to the midrange segment with the Galaxy A series and other premium but affordable models. The Korean tech giant is also exploiting the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/09/29/samsung-reportedly-in-talks-with-xiaomis-wintech-to-manufacture-galaxy-phones-for-china/">use of ODM to manufacture its phones</a> for the local market in a bid to cut the cost of production and thus bring down the retail price. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/10/02/the-galaxy-a6s-will-be-the-first-samsung-model-thatll-be-manufactured-by-xiaomis-manufacturer/">Galaxy A6s and A9s</a> were the first devices to be manufactured by an ODM.</p>
<p>Samsung still continues production of smartphones in its plants in Thailand and Vietnam, though. However, it remains to be seen if there would be any chance of a return to China in the future. Time will tell.</p>
