<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-426960 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-flex-oled-featured-1024x517.jpg?x10805" alt="samsung flex oled featured" width="696" height="351" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-flex-oled-featured-1024x517.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-flex-oled-featured-300x152.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-flex-oled-featured-768x388.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-flex-oled-featured-696x352.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-flex-oled-featured-1068x539.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-flex-oled-featured-832x420.jpg 832w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-flex-oled-featured.jpg 1392w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>The micro-site has seemingly been set up with the sole purpose of showcasing the company&#8217;s bleeding-edge display tech. Within it, the &#8216;Flex OLED&#8217; page suggests that Samsung may soon be diverging into a greater variety of displays, offering a number of aspect ratios and folding in a variety of different ways. The company&#8217;s current portfolio only includes its Galaxy Z Fold and Flip devices but it might soon be expanded.</p>
<p>Samsung&#8217;s Ultra Thin Glass tech has been highlighted with improved durability, withstanding 100 folds a day or over five years of constant use. UTG has even been claimed to match the hardness of real glass, although that remains to be seen.</p>
<figure id="attachment_427000" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-427000" style="width: 852px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-427000" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-utg.png?x10805" alt="samsung utg" width="852" height="583" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-utg.png 852w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-utg-300x205.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-utg-768x526.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-utg-218x150.png 218w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-utg-696x476.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/samsung-utg-614x420.png 614w" sizes="(max-width: 852px) 100vw, 852px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-427000" class="wp-caption-text">Ultra Thin Glass</figcaption></figure>
<p>The Korean company has even achieved a remarkably tiny bending radius of just 1.4mm, which should provide a tinier crease and result in slimmer devices.</p>
<p>But perhaps the most intriguing bits are the posters that seem to show laptops+tablets with foldable displays and TVs with rollable displays that roll just like paper. Of course, these are obviously still under their early stages, but a future where tech like this is mainstream is now closer than ever.</p>

<p>The site also offers a glimpse at Flex Bar &#8211; a display type not unlike the one found on the Z Flip3, as well as Flex Square (a Z Fold-style panel). Flex Note has been showcased as well &#8211; a new trademark that might be Samsung&#8217;s new way of describing tech found on devices like the ThinkPad X1 Fold.</p>
<p>All in all, Samsung&#8217;s vision is a huge step in the right direction. Many had already begun to deem phones as having reached an evolutionary peak, but it&#8217;s quite clear now that there&#8217;s plenty more to come.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We saw a similar design when <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/lg">LG</a> provided a sneak peek into its foldable smartphone during its CES 2021 event. The senior vice president of the display division of Samsung, Choi Kwon-young provided several exciting insights on the foldable display screen it is designing for Samsung smartphones primarily.  This came as the company, Samsung Display published its year 2020 financial report and earnings outlook. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to Kwon-young, Samsung Display&#8217;s first rollable and slidable displays would be released later this year, and we should expect that Samsung&#8217;s mobile telecommunications division will be the first OEM to deploy the rollable display technology, as the primary customer of Samsung Display. However, we note that Samsung Display did not make any definitive statement to confirm whether Samsung&#8217;s mobile division will be the first to adopt the rollable designs.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The news by Samsung Display on foldable and slidable display screens may also imply that Samsung&#8217;s flip and fold displays may also adopt new technologies, in addition to important features like variable refresh rate and low power to maintain its leadership in the increasingly dense regular <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/oled">OLED</a> market.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our gazes are still trained on Samsung as they did not unveil the technologies that would be incorporated into Samsung&#8217;s upcoming line up this year, like the Galaxy Z Flip3 and the Galaxy Fold3. </span></p>

Since then, the company has launched other foldable handsets as well, and now, it is hinting at the possible future forms of such devices, which may feature a triple folding screen or a rollable display.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-356774 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/0666-kentcvx7435250.png?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="454" height="689" /></p>
<p>The South Korean tech giant only revealed the designs as concepts at the moment, so it is still unsure if the company is actually working on such devices. Although, the company had previously patented a Galaxy foldable smartphone with a &#8216;Z&#8217; shaped triple fold display. So, there is still a good change that the company is actually working on this handset or is at least considering the design, as per a <a href="https://finance.sina.com.cn/tech/2020-11-27/doc-iiznezxs3917188.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TechSina</em> </a>report. However, this is still speculation so take it with a pinch of salt for now.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/26/redmi-watch-and-mi-watch-lite-appear-on-bluetooth-sig/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Redmi Watch and Mi Watch Lite appear on Bluetooth SIG Certification suggesting a Global launch</a></strong></h6>
<p>Looking at the triple folding smartphone Samsung shared, its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/29/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-3-arrive-with-sliding-keyboard/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">design resembles a patent we had reported on last month</a>, which was reportedly for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-3/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy Z Fold 3</a>. The other device that the company hinted was a rollable display gadget. This product essentially has a long cylindrical body, which houses the flexible rolled up display that can be unfurled from. The image shared by the company reveals that the product is more likely to be aimed towards professionals and other that require a portable device with a large display.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-356773 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/b931-kentcvx7435270.png?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="452" height="686" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/b931-kentcvx7435270.png 550w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/b931-kentcvx7435270-198x300.png 198w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/b931-kentcvx7435270-277x420.png 277w" sizes="(max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately, we do not have a lot to go on at the moment, and Samsung has refrained from divulging any additional information regarding these devices either. Although, it is indicative that the company does at least have such innovative designs in mind and we might soon see such launches sometime in the near future. So stay tuned.</p>

The company is yet to release its 2017 total shipment but there is no doubt that the company still sits atop the charts. Despite its tall standings, Samsung is unrelenting in its quest for innovative products and has just filed a patent for a rollable display that can be activated by fingerprint.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display-1.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-164641" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display-1-1024x431.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung " width="640" height="269" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display-1-1024x431.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display-1-300x126.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display-1-768x323.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display-1.jpg 1440w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p>The industry has been toiling with the idea of foldable displays with several patents and prototypes flying around. We expect to see smartphones with foldable displays this 2018 and Samsung may likely pioneer the trend. But before that happens, the tech giant is already working on rollable display technology. How about that? As stated earlier, the rollable display is activated by the fingerprint. Samsung isn&#8217;t the first to tinker with the idea of a rollable display. LG has a rollable display patent also but LG&#8217;s own is different from Samsung&#8217;s. Samsung patented display uses magnets that are placed along the main body housing the display whereas LG&#8217;s utilises an ultra-small rotating motor.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-164640" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display-1024x511.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung rollable display" width="640" height="319" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display-1024x511.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display-768x383.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-rollable-display.jpg 1440w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Read Also:</span> <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/05/26/samsung-patents-camera-enabled-smartwatch-tablet-rolling-screen/">Samsung Patents a Camera Enabled Smartwatch and a Tablet with Rolling Screen</a></strong></p>
<p>In addition, the patent reveals two types of bodies, both metallic, where the rollable display is pulled by the magnets. One is cylindrical and the other takes a square shape but they both are equipped with fingerprint sensors that allow users to unfold the rollable display with a touch of a finger. We can&#8217;t say if the technology will be adopted in smartphones or how it would be adapted for smartphones. But the size of the package heavily suggests it would be used for smartphones.</p>
