<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/">Samsung</a> is reportedly speeding up development of a rollable smartphone, aiming to create a device that smoothly expands from compact to almost tablet-sized whenever you need it.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="768" height="432" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot-2026-05-22-040113-768x432-1.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-743310" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot-2026-05-22-040113-768x432-1.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot-2026-05-22-040113-768x432-1-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot-2026-05-22-040113-768x432-1-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot-2026-05-22-040113-768x432-1-747x420.png 747w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure></div>

<p>According to a recent report from South Korean outlet Maeil Business, Samsung Display is pushing hard on this technology. Their goal is to launch the first real commercial <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/05/21/samsung-patents-two-rollable-phone-designs-one-hides-soft-display-completely-inside/">rollable phone</a> in the first half of 2028, possibly alongside or as part of the Galaxy S28 series. It&#8217;s expected to be called the Galaxy Z Slide. Rumors also suggest it could feature a big 10-inch 16:9 display with around 440 pixels per inch. There’s even talk of a second model coming in 2030.</p>

<p>This move makes a lot of sense for Samsung. While they still dominate foldables, their share of foldable display panels has dropped noticeably, from about 41.8% in Q4 2025 to 27% in Q1 2026, according to Omdia. With more competition heating up, a rollable phone could be their way to reclaim the innovation spotlight and raise the technical bar.</p>

<p>Rollable screens are much trickier than foldables. The biggest challenge is making the display “roll” reliably hundreds or thousands of times without getting wavy, creased, or uneven. Everything, including the rollers, the layers inside the screen, and the supporting structure, has to be incredibly precise while staying thin and light enough for everyday use.</p>

<p>Samsung has been <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/05/21/samsung-patents-two-rollable-phone-designs-one-hides-soft-display-completely-inside/">experimenting</a> with this <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/04/21/samsung-first-vertical-rollable-phone-design-patent-leak/">for years</a>. Back at CES 2023, they showed off the Flex Hybrid (which combined folding and sliding), and later that year at SID Display Week, they wowed people with the Rollable Flex prototype, stretching a tiny 49mm screen all the way out to over 254mm. That’s more than five times bigger. Impressive stuff.</p>

<p>If it works well, a rollable phone could be a game-changer: small enough to slip in your pocket, but capable of turning into a near-tablet experience for watching videos, multitasking, or getting real work done, and hopefully without the visible crease you get on current foldables.</p>

<p>If Samsung can deliver a premium feel that justifies the expected high price, this could be the next big evolution in smartphone design. It’ll be really interesting to watch how this develops. The Galaxy Z Slide (or whatever they end up calling it) has the potential to change how we think about phone screens.</p>

<p>Back in 2021, a patent application from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> about its rollable phone <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/26/samsung-patents-a-smartphone-design-with-dual-slider-mechanism/">surfaced</a> on the web. Since then, the development of the rollable phone has appeared in the news several times. The company&#8217;s first rollable phone was speculated to launch in 2025. After almost a year, we finally have some new information about the rollable phone.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="640" height="428" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Samsung-rollable-phone.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung rollable phone" class="wp-image-451029" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Samsung-rollable-phone.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Samsung-rollable-phone-300x201.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Samsung-rollable-phone-628x420.jpg 628w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption>via Ice Universe </figcaption></figure>

<p>In the latest news, TheElec reaffirms that the phone could indeed launch in 2025. The report notes that the phone will come with a massive 12.4&#8243; display that can be rolled up. For context, the recently released tri-folding phone from Huawei packs a 10.2&#8243; screen.</p>

<p>This rollable phone is also rumored to come with under-display camera technology. Samsung&#8217;s book-style foldables like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-6/">Galaxy Z Fold6</a> already use this technology for one of its selfie cameras. However, it remains unclear how many cameras of the upcoming rollable phone will use the under-display tech especially because the phone will have a different form factor.</p>

<h2>Samsung was also working on a tri-folding device</h2>

<p>Notably, Samsung was also working on a tri-folding device as far back as 2021 and even showcased a prototype. However, the phone never made it to market. Meanwhile, Huawei became the world&#8217;s first to release a tri-folding device with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/09/10/huawei-mate-xt-ultimate-design-tri-fold-specs-price/">Huawei Mate XT Ultimate</a>. Huawei&#8217;s offering folds in a Z shape rather than inward twice and utilizes a portion of the large foldable display as its cover display.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Huawei-Mate-XT-Ultimate-Design-Pre-Order.jpg?x44794" alt="Huawei-Mate-XT-Ultimate-Design-Pre-Order" class="wp-image-649121" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Huawei-Mate-XT-Ultimate-Design-Pre-Order.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Huawei-Mate-XT-Ultimate-Design-Pre-Order-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Huawei-Mate-XT-Ultimate-Design-Pre-Order-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Huawei-Mate-XT-Ultimate-Design-Pre-Order-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Huawei-Mate-XT-Ultimate-Design-Pre-Order-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure>

<p>While it may be surprising to see Huawei take the lead, despite Samsung working on a tri-folding smartphone early on and even showcasing a prototype, the reason reportedly lies in Samsung&#8217;s business strategy.</p>

<p>An insider familiar with Samsung&#8217;s internal affairs said &#8220;I heard that the Mobile Experience division, which is in charge of devices such as smartphones is recently focusing on cost reduction to increase profitability&#8221; Another official said, &#8220;Samsung Electronics has gone to the extent of cutting costs to the point where it will stop producing mock-up products provided to general mobile phone stores starting this year.&#8221;</p>

Now, the company is reportedly gearing for the release of its foldable phones for this year, possibly called the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4. <a href="https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/1506912403249774595" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ice Universe</a> has now tipped the chipset of these phones, and additionally, also revealed a third foldable device that could debut soon.</p>
<p>According to the tipster, Samsung will go with the yet-to-be-released <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon-8-gen-1">Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 </a>Plus SoC for both the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4. The new chipset will be made by TSMC and will be based on the 4nm process.</p>

<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>While this isn&#8217;t a surprise, what&#8217;s actually is, is the debut of a third foldable phone. The tipster says that Samsung is all set to release a third foldable phone. It will most likely be a scroll screen phone and is reportedly codenamed &#8220;Diamond&#8221;.</p>
<p>Although key details of this third foldable device are unknown, the tipster reveals that the phone could be launched in H2 2022. This scroll device is expected to be a rollable phone.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_451029" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-451029" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-451029 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Samsung-rollable-phone.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung rollable phone" width="640" height="428" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Samsung-rollable-phone.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Samsung-rollable-phone-300x201.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Samsung-rollable-phone-628x420.jpg 628w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-451029" class="wp-caption-text">via Ice Universe</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Samsung has showcased some major designs of such rollable devices in the past. This new scroll screen phone could employ a design from one of the company&#8217;s uncountable patents. Samsung is already strong in its display segment and is already pioneering in the same. However, there are a lot of challenges that the company could face with this technology. Now it remains to be seen, what actually do we see from the company later this year.</p>
<p>To recall, Oppo had showcased a prototype of a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-x-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">rollable/scroll screen phone</a> back in 2020. The device is yet to be commercialized. In fact, no scrollable phone is yet commercial and selling successfully in the market. The upcoming Samsung scroll phone could be the new commercial rollable phone, who knows?</p>

However, it might also launch a rollable display smartphone as a patent unearthed by LetsGoDigital <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/samsung-galaxy-slide-smartphone">shows</a> a dual slider smartphone design.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-367779" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="1024" height="626" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-300x183.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-768x470.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-696x425.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-687x420.jpg 687w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>As the name suggests, the smartphone patent, which was applied on March 2020 at WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office), shows a retractable display on both sides(left, right). Surprisingly, it also mentions the possibility of a dual-screen i.e, on the front and back moving simultaneously.</p>
<p>The patent got published recently on January 21, 2021, and the report has partnered with creator Jermaine Smit to show us 3D color renders. As mentioned above, the front display is foldable and the back could have either a second display or flexible material such as metal film, fabric, or leather.</p>
<p>As for the slider mechanism, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> has used two Switch gears and a gear rail to move the housing inside. The housing inside has a midframe on which the folded display rests. Speaking of which, the report says that the screen will be 30% larger when unfolded on left and right.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-367778" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-2.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="1440" height="1800" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-2.jpg 1440w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-2-240x300.jpg 240w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-2-768x960.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-2-819x1024.jpg 819w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-2-696x870.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-2-1068x1335.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/samsung-dual-slider-patent-2-336x420.jpg 336w" sizes="(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px" /></p>
<p>For instance, a typical 6-inch device would become an 8-inch smartphone. To complement this, Samsung is planning to use a chain-link system covered with flexible foil/cover and a side frame that flexes in and out along with the display. Another exciting part is the rear(flexible) moving along with the frame and front display making it unique from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/17/oppo-x-2021-worlds-first-extending-concept-smartphone/">other extending smartphone</a> designs.</p>
<p>For selfies, the patent schematic doesn&#8217;t contain a front cam but talks about the integration of the Front/Rear cam with the same layout. However, the report mentions the possibility of Samsung using punch-hole screen upfront like its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/11/samsung-galaxy-z-fold2-launch-india-%e2%82%b9149999-2039/">older foldables</a>.</p>
<p>That being said, the device could also have the new Galaxy S21 rear camera layout which has a side flushing out with the frame. This is not the first time we are seeing a slider phone from Samsung. Back in CES 2020, the company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/08/samsung-will-showcase-a-brand-new-sliding-phone-concept-at-ces-2020/">showcased a phone</a> having a display sliding out from one side.</p>
<p>As with every patent, we don&#8217;t know if Samsung will finalize this design for commercial use, and hence, let&#8217;s wait for more details.</p>

Also, most of the processors released this year by the major chip makers were integrated with a 5G modem. However <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/foldable-phones">foldable phones</a> did not experience the same level of proliferation, mainly due to the fact that it is still an expensive venture and the durability is still not awesome. However, OEMs seem to be progressing to another foldable form factor &#8211; Rollable displays.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/lg-rollable.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-358535" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/lg-rollable.jpg?x44794" alt="LG rollable phone" width="700" height="164" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/lg-rollable.jpg 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/lg-rollable-300x70.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/lg-rollable-696x164.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a></p>
<p>Recently, OPPO <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/17/oppo-x-2021-worlds-first-extending-concept-smartphone/">unveiled the X 2021</a>, its first and indeed the world&#8217;s first concept phone with a rollable display. The company even released a demo video of the device while in use and it looks amazing. It was later revealed that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/18/oppo-x-2021s-rollable-oled-panel-is-made-by-boe/">the display was manufactured by Chinese display maker BOE</a> and that it was <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/20/oppo-x-2021-withstood-100000-rigorous-curls-without-hassle-during-test-oppo/">able to withstand 100,000 rigorous curls</a> when tested.</p>
<p>Looks like we&#8217;ll be seeing more rollable display packing phones in 2021 even though we can&#8217;t say if they will progress beyond concept phones. An <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/lg">LG</a> rollable phone has reportedly been listed on the database of South Korea&#8217;s carrier Intranet. According to the Twitter leaker @Cozyplanes, the device is currently registered in the Korean operator&#8217;s internal database. The model of the device is LM-RN910N, while the unlocked model carries the model number OMD-LM-R910N.</p>
<p><div class="su-note" style="border-color:#e5e5e5;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><div class="su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim" style="background-color:#ffffff;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: </strong><a title="More than 20 million Gionee phones secretly implanted with Trojan Horses to make money" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/05/more-than-20-million-gionee-phones-secretly-implanted-with-trojan-horses-to-make-money/" rel="bookmark"><strong>More than 20 million Gionee phones secretly implanted with Trojan Horses to make money</strong></a></div></div></p>
<p>Earlier rumors reveal that the specifications of LG&#8217;s rollable phone include a 7.4-inch expandable screen with a resolution of 2428×1080 pixels (20:9), a video mode of 2428×1366 pixels (16:9), and a productivity mode of 2428×1600 pixels (3: 2).</p>

<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>Further, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/05/lg-rollable-the-name-for-first-rollable-smartphone/">LG Rollable</a> is rumored to pack a 4200mAh battery and will be powered by Qualcomm&#8217;s latest <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/03/snapdragon-888-detailed-specifications-officially-confirmed/">Snapdragon 888 processor</a> paired with 16GB of RAM. So don&#8217;t expect it to be a cheap phone.</p>
<p>The Twitter tipster @Cozyplanes also revealed details about how the device works. The device will expand on both sides, increasing the screen size by up to 100%. However, the top frame will not expand with the device. According to reports, LG will add a flexible frame that can be expanded to cover the exposed edge of the screen, and then retracted when the phone is closed. The phone will also have a locking device to prevent accidental deployment and prevent the screen from scrolling too fast, which can cause wrinkles on the screen.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Oppo-X-2021.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-354800" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Oppo-X-2021.png?x44794" alt="Oppo X 2021" width="500" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Oppo-X-2021.png 500w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Oppo-X-2021-150x150.png 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Oppo-X-2021-300x300.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Oppo-X-2021-420x420.png 420w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></a></p>
<p>LG is not the only company that is developing a mobile phone with a scrollable display. Samsung and TCL join OPPO on the list of OEMs that have applied for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/11/lg-rollable-display-patent/">patents</a> for smartphones with a scrolling display. Thus, we may certainly see a few more designs from others soon.</p>
