<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/">Samsung</a> might be ready to pull off its biggest fold yet. According to a new report from The Korea Herald, the company is preparing to show off its first tri-fold smartphone later this week during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2025 summit in Gyeongju, South Korea, which will take place from October 31 to November 1.</p>

<p>The long-rumored device, which could debut as the Galaxy Z Tri-Fold or Galaxy G Fold, would mark Samsung’s next leap in foldable design. This launch timeframe aligns with Samsung’s earlier tease of a 2025 launch, but months ahead of most expectations.</p>

<p>Samsung was originally expected to unveil the tri-fold alongside its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/10/22/samsung-galaxy-xr-headset-launched/">new XR headset</a>, which launched last week. According to a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/09/20/samsungs-tri-fold-phone-reportedly-delayed/">report from last month</a>, production issues pushed the foldable’s debut slightly back, preventing a joint launch with the XR. Still, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/09/20/samsungs-tri-fold-phone-reportedly-delayed/">delay</a> seems minimal — a relief for fans who’ve been waiting years to see Samsung finally bring a tri-fold phone to market.</p>

<p>Production will reportedly be limited to 50,000 to 200,000 units at launch, suggesting a soft entry aimed at gauging demand before a wider rollout. Initial markets may include the US, South Korea, China, Singapore, Taiwan, and possibly the UAE.</p>

<p>Pricing, however, won’t be for the faint of heart. The tri-fold is said to start at around $2,800, roughly $1,000 more than the Galaxy Z Fold7. The extra cost likely goes toward the intricacies of this ambitious design and the larger display panel.</p>

<p>The phone is expected to include a 6.5-inch cover screen that unfolds into a massive 10-inch display, giving users tablet-level space for multitasking and media. Expect S Pen support, refined hinge mechanics with reduced creasing, and tight integration with Galaxy Watches and Buds.</p>

<p>While the tri-fold will likely remain a niche device, it signals Samsung’s push to compete with rivals like Huawei, whose Mate XT tri-fold gained traction in China. If true, this could be the company’s most daring form factor since the original Galaxy Fold in 2019.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/">Samsung</a>’s plans for its next wave of futuristic devices appear to have shifted. The company had been expected to showcase its first tri-fold smartphone alongside the upcoming XR headset this month, but new reports suggest the foldable won’t be ready in time. Instead, the spotlight will fall solely on the headset, leaving foldable fans waiting a little longer.</p>

<p>According to ETNews, Samsung is preparing to launch the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/01/23/galaxy-xr-headset-samsungs-project-moohan-revealed-at-unpacked-2025/">Project Moohan XR headset</a> on October 21. The device will mark Samsung’s official entry into mixed reality, with features like AI-assisted controls, advanced eye and hand tracking, and support for a wide range of Android apps. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/01/05/qualcomm-launches-snapdragon-xr2-gen-2-platform-samsung-and-google-among-early-adopters/">Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2</a> and uses a high-resolution display, positioning it as a strong challenger to Meta’s Quest series and Apple’s Vision Pro.</p>

<p>The Galaxy Tri-Fold, however, has reportedly been pushed back. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/09/08/galaxy-z-trifold-leak-points-to-unusual-cover-display-placement/">inward folding tri-fold</a> was initially tipped to launch together with the headset. Samsung is said to be holding off until late November, giving the device more time for final quality checks while also spacing out its big launches.</p>

<p>Samsung has already proven itself a leader in book-style foldables with the Galaxy Z Fold lineup, but the Tri-Fold represents a bigger leap—and with that comes added complexity. By separating the launches, the company ensures that each product gets its own moment, and that the Tri-Fold’s debut isn’t overshadowed by the excitement around XR.</p>

<p>The delay may test the patience of fans who have been waiting years for a true tri-fold phone, but it doesn’t look like the project is in jeopardy. Instead, Samsung seems to be playing it safe, aiming to close out the year with back-to-back showcase products: Moohan for XR in October, and the Tri-Fold foldable soon after.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="705" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-04-020307-1024x705.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-695353" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-04-020307-1024x705.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-04-020307-300x207.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-04-020307-768x529.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-04-020307-218x150.png 218w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-04-020307-696x480.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-04-020307-1068x736.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-04-020307-610x420.png 610w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-04-020307-100x70.png 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-04-020307.png 1077w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The event will see the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold7, Z Flip7, and likely a more affordable Z Flip7 FE. Also on the docket: the Galaxy Watch 8 series. But it’s the teaser — filled with food puns, flashy visuals, and layered messaging — that has fans reading between the lines.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/UT4UW20hoEYsy9Z6-1.mp4"></video></figure>

<p>According to leaker Setsuna Digital (via Weibo), Samsung may preview its long-rumored tri-fold phone at the event, though a full launch isn’t expected until October — similar to the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s25-edge/">Galaxy S25 Edge</a>’s staggered reveal earlier this year. If true, it could be the Galaxy G Fold, a device Samsung has shown off at trade shows like CES but never brought to market.</p>

<p>The tri-fold could sport a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/28/samsungs-tri-fold-leak-titanium-frame-snapdragon-chip-but-no-under-display-camera/">titanium frame</a> and new silicon-carbon battery tech — and may cost over $3,000, putting it head-to-head with devices like Huawei’s Mate X Ultimate.</p>

<p>As for the confirmed foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is expected to feature a Snapdragon 8 Elite &#8216;for Galaxy&#8217; chip, a 200MP main camera, and one of the slimmest middle frames of any book-style foldable yet. The Z Flip7, on the other hand, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/25/galaxy-z-flip7-may-launch-with-exynos-2500-globally-not-just-in-korea/">could switch to Samsung’s own Exynos 2500</a> chip in most regions and feature a larger 4.1-inch cover screen. Pre-orders are likely to open shortly after the event, with shipping expected in August.</p>

<p>Samsung is also expected to announce enhanced Galaxy AI features during the event, with tools like “Selfie Studio” possibly baked into One UI 8.0.</p>

<p>With all signs pointing to a foldable-heavy event — and a possible look at Samsung’s next big leap in smartphone design — Unpacked 2025 might just live up to its name.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>’s long-rumored <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/19/galaxy-z-fold-7-and-tri-fold-could-use-titanium-to-go-thinner-and-tougher/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tri-folding Galaxy</a> phone might have just shown up in China. The innovative new foldable phone was spotted in a certification database, which hints that it actually exists but also reveals some disappointing details regarding its charging speeds. So read on to find out more.</p>

<h2>Is This Samsung’s Tri-Fold Phone?</h2>

<p>The South Korean tech giant&#8217;s upcoming tri-fold Galaxy phone may have surfaced on China&#8217;s 3C certification, carrying the SM-F9680 model number. It has been listed as a &#8216;5G digital mobile telephone set&#8217;. Samsung will likely skip a charging adapter in the box, but the new foldable device was listed with the EP-TA800 charging adapter. This reveals that the tri-folding model might only come with support for up to 25W wired fast charging. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="606" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-1024x606.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung tri-fold" class="wp-image-669668" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-1024x606.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-300x178.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-768x454.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-696x412.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-1068x632.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-710x420.jpg 710w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>In other words, it matches the new Galaxy S25 Edge&#8217;s disappointing fast charging speeds. The 3C certification also hints that the tri-folding phone will be released in the Chinese market as well. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is the only tri-folding phone to see a commercial release, so Galaxy&#8217;s tri-fold model could be the second within this new category. As of right now, the brand is set to debut in the global market soon. </p>

<p>While initial teasers hinted at a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/04/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7-ultra-teased/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Z Flip 7 Ultra</a>, this was <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/06/galaxy-z-fold7-ultra-isnt-real-claims-tipster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">later revealed not to be the case</a>. So the flagship <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/03/samsung-keeps-foldable-prices-steady-for-galaxy-z-fold-7-z-flip-7-sort-of/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7</a> will be arriving soon, along with the relatively more affordable <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/05/galaxy-z-flip7-fe-gets-certified-alongside-fold-7-and-flip-7/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE </a>model. This is all the information we have at the moment, so stick around for more.</p>

<p>If this report holds true, Samsung is officially stepping into the tri-fold game to compete with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-xt-ultimate/">Huawei’s Mate XT</a>.</p>

<p>According to the report, Samsung’s tri-fold will unfold into a massive 9.9&#8243; to 10&#8243; screen, meaning it will offer a tablet-like functionality that fits in your pocket. What’s cool is that the device is expected to have a unique folding mechanism that protects the display when it’s folded—something Huawei’s Mate XT doesn’t do.</p>

<p>Although, I have to admit I&#8217;m a bit concerned about the weight and bulk of Samsung&#8217;s tri-fold. It took Samsung several of generations to figure out how to slim the foldable down, which they have partially achieved with the South Korea exclusive Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/HUAWEI-Mate-XT-Review_1.mp4_20240930_235449.827-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-653056" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/HUAWEI-Mate-XT-Review_1.mp4_20240930_235449.827-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/HUAWEI-Mate-XT-Review_1.mp4_20240930_235449.827-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/HUAWEI-Mate-XT-Review_1.mp4_20240930_235449.827-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/HUAWEI-Mate-XT-Review_1.mp4_20240930_235449.827-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/HUAWEI-Mate-XT-Review_1.mp4_20240930_235449.827-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/HUAWEI-Mate-XT-Review_1.mp4_20240930_235449.827-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/HUAWEI-Mate-XT-Review_1.mp4_20240930_235449.827-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/HUAWEI-Mate-XT-Review_1.mp4_20240930_235449.827.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>There&#8217;s no word on the adoption of the Si/C battery tech for the upcoming Galaxy foldables, so it will be difficult to maintain a slim form factor similar to the one from Huawei without sacrificing the battery capacity. For context, the mate XT packs a 5600 mAh Si/C battery and measures 12.8 mm when closed. Check out <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/10/25/huawei-mate-xt-true-review-the-new-phone-everyone-wants/">our review of the Huawei Mate XT</a> here.</p>

<h2>A total of four foldable devices are expected from Samsung</h2>

<p>Production is set to kick off in Q2 2025, and Samsung is reportedly limiting the first run to just 200,000 units. That’s not a lot, so if you’re already intrigued, you might want to start saving up now.</p>

<p>Samsung isn’t stopping at the tri-fold, though. The Galaxy Z Flip FE (a more budget-friendly option) is joining the lineup. In total, we’re looking at four foldable models in 2025. <p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/">Samsung</a>’s tri-fold smartphone project has taken a significant step forward with a recent patent approval, offering a glimpse into what could be an innovative new addition to the foldable market.</p>

<p>Although the company remains quiet about the project, this patent—filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)—gives some clues as to Samsung’s vision for this next-generation foldable. While a patent doesn’t guarantee a product release, it often hints at a company&#8217;s development direction.</p>

<h2>Samsung&#8217;s tri-fold appears to follow Huawei&#8217;s footsteps for the Mate XT</h2>

<p>This particular patent filed more than three years ago but only approved in early November this year, describes a tri-fold design that resembles the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-xt-ultimate/">Huawei Mate XT</a>. Samsung appears focused on perfecting the tri-fold design, prioritizing functionality and quality over rushing to be first to market, a shift from its pioneering role with the original Galaxy Fold.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="738" height="585" data-id="659786" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/samsung-tri-fold-patent-2.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-659786" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/samsung-tri-fold-patent-2.jpg 738w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/samsung-tri-fold-patent-2-300x238.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/samsung-tri-fold-patent-2-696x552.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/samsung-tri-fold-patent-2-530x420.jpg 530w" sizes="(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="738" height="760" data-id="659785" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/samsung-tri-fold-patent.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-659785" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/samsung-tri-fold-patent.jpg 738w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/samsung-tri-fold-patent-291x300.jpg 291w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/samsung-tri-fold-patent-696x717.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/samsung-tri-fold-patent-408x420.jpg 408w" sizes="(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px" /></figure>
</figure>

<p><strong>The patent outlines a Z-shaped folding mechanism, something we have already seen with the Huawei Mate XT</strong>. It remains unclear when Samsung might introduce its tri-fold.</p>

<h2>What to expect from Samsung’s tri-fold</h2>

<p>While Samsung’s tri-fold is still in early development, Huawei’s Mate XT (<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/10/25/huawei-mate-xt-true-review-the-new-phone-everyone-wants/">review</a>) offers some insight into what consumers might expect from this form factor. The Mate XT’s unique Z-shaped fold opens to reveal a spacious 10.2-inch 3K display, transforming the device into a tablet. This design adds versatility, with the Mate XT unfolding into a fully functional tablet experience, enhanced by an optional keyboard accessory.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="676" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/samsung-galaxy-tri-fold-smartphone-1024x676-1024x676.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" class="wp-image-433269" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/samsung-galaxy-tri-fold-smartphone-1024x676.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/samsung-galaxy-tri-fold-smartphone-1024x676-300x198.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/samsung-galaxy-tri-fold-smartphone-1024x676-768x507.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/samsung-galaxy-tri-fold-smartphone-1024x676-696x459.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/samsung-galaxy-tri-fold-smartphone-1024x676-636x420.jpg 636w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The Mate XT&#8217;s design also helps us imagine the engineering challenges Samsung may face. Huawei’s tri-fold folds with one side inward and the other side outward, creating a thin, 12.8mm profile when closed. While this design minimizes bulk, it introduces a noticeable crease, which could become more prominent over time. Samsung’s approach may involve innovations to address such creasing, ensuring longevity and smooth usability.</p>

<p>Samsung has opted for the latest Snapdragon flagship chips for its foldables so far. Given the possibility of multitasking, the upcoming Samsung tri-fold could also boast the latest and best Snapdragon chipset. While there&#8217;s still time for details about the Samsung tri-fold to surface, readers can check out the leaked <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/11/08/galaxy-s25-ultra-closeup-renders-showcase-the-new-design-and-reveal-color-options/">renders</a> of the next top-of-the-line bar flagship, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s25-ultra/">Galaxy S25 Ultra</a>.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/">Samsung</a> appears to be expanding its foldable lineup with the development of two variants of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which could include the Samsung tri-fold.</p>

<p>Recently, the company launched the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/10/21/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-6-special-edition-launched/">Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition</a> exclusively in South Korea. This model, which is a larger and thinner version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6, features a 200MP camera but lacks S Pen support.</p>

<p>A report from Galaxy Club now indicates that Samsung is working on two new models of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, known internally by the codenames &#8220;Q7&#8221; and &#8220;Q7M.&#8221;</p>

<h2>It might include a tri-fold phone</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung-tri-fold" class="wp-image-656342" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The Q7M is particularly intriguing, as there is speculation it might be linked to a potential tri-fold design. According to rumors from South Korea, Samsung is experimenting with new folding mechanisms, including a model that could feature three panels and two hinges. However, it remains unclear if the Q7M will be the anticipated tri-fold or if it’s being developed separately under a different codename.</p>

<p>Reports also suggest that Samsung might be planning to introduce a tri-fold foldable next year. This device, if launched, would allow the company to catch up to competitors like Huawei, who have already showcased similar designs with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-xt-ultimate/">Huawei Mate XT Ultimate</a>. The tri-fold could potentially offer a broader, tablet-like display when fully opened, enhancing productivity and media consumption.</p>

<h2>What to expect?</h2>

<p>In terms of performance, while details on the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s chipset are yet to be confirmed, the Z series track record suggests the adoption of Qualcomm&#8217;s 2024 flagship chipset, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/10/24/snapdragon-8-elite-vs-snapdragon-8-gen-3/">Snapdragon 8 Elite</a>. Not to mention, it is expected to offer significant performance and power efficiency improvements to the next-generation foldable, potentially improving the multitasking experience and battery life.</p>

<p>Camera upgrades are also anticipated, although the specifics for the Q7M remain under wraps. If it follows the design ethos of the recent Special Edition Fold, it could carry over the 200MP sensor, offering superior photography capabilities</p>

<p>With the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s development running parallel to these other projects, Samsung’s foldable portfolio for 2025 looks set to be more versatile than ever. It’s clear that the company is committed to experimenting with new formats, potentially making foldables more mainstream and varied for different user needs.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/">Samsung</a> is gearing up to expand its foldable lineup with a new tri-fold smartphone, potentially launching in 2025. The device, featuring a screen that folds twice, has already seen its components developed, indicating readiness for commercialization. However, the final decision rests with Samsung’s Mobile eXperience division led by TM Roh.</p>

<h2>Samsung&#8217;s tri-fold could be the first tri-fold for global market</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung-tri-fold" class="wp-image-656342" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Samsung-tri-fold.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Currently, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-xt-ultimate/">Huawei’s Mate XT</a> is the only tri-fold on the market, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/09/22/huawei-mate-xt-global-launch-confirmed/">currently limited to China</a>. If Samsung releases this model globally, it could be the first tri-fold available worldwide. The new form factor would transform from a tablet-sized display to a compact phone, providing versatile usage for various scenarios.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s no word yet on specifications, but industry patents suggest innovative hinge mechanisms and sensor integration, hinting at a device designed for flexible use cases.</p>

<h2>What to expect?</h2>

<p>Based on Samsung&#8217;s track record of foldable phones, the premium tri-fold will likely use the latest Qualcomm flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Elite.</p>

<p>For those curious about the multitasking capabilities, key advancements in the Snapdragon 8 Elite include a 40% boost in GPU performance and a 35% enhancement in ray tracing capabilities as compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 of the existing <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-6/">Galaxy Z Fold 6</a>. These improvements, coupled with a 44% increase in power efficiency, make the chipset ideal for demanding tasks like gaming and multitasking, ensuring a reasonable performance upgrade for the upcoming Samsung tri-fold.</p>

<p>The chipset features an upgraded NPU (45% improvement in AI capabilities), ensuring more complex Galaxy AI features for the tri-fold phone.</p>

<p>However, the tri-fold will also likely need to be slimmer than the existing Galaxy Z Fold 6, so no larger camera sensors are expected inside as well. Readers should expect a camera setup similar to the company&#8217;s existing book-style foldable. For reference, the Galaxy Z Fold 6&#8217;s camera setup is noted below:</p>

<ul><li>50 MP, f/1.8, 23mm (wide), 1.0µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS</li><li>10 MP, f/2.4, 66mm (telephoto), 1.0µm, PDAF, OIS, 3x optical zoom</li><li>12 MP, f/2.2, 123˚, 12mm (ultrawide), 1.12µm</li></ul>

<p>While <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> wasn&#8217;t the first company to introduce a foldable smartphone, it&#8217;s certainly the one that made them popular. In 2019, the Korean tech giant launched the Galaxy Fold, becoming one of the first major players to jump on the trend. Although not many other companies have entered this unconventional smartphone category yet, Samsung is reportedly taking it to the next level with a tri-fold device that could be released later this year. Here are the details.</p>

<p>According to a recent tweet by popular tipster Yogesh Brar, Samsung might be launching a tri-fold smartphone in 2022, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 models. However, it&#8217;s worth taking this information with a grain of salt, given that there have been rumors about a tri-fold phone from Samsung in the past that turned out to be false.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="684" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/tri-fold-samsung-1024x684.webp?x44794" alt="tri-fold samsung" class="wp-image-525116" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/tri-fold-samsung-1024x684.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/tri-fold-samsung-300x201.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/tri-fold-samsung-768x513.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/tri-fold-samsung-696x465.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/tri-fold-samsung-1068x714.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/tri-fold-samsung-628x420.webp 628w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/tri-fold-samsung.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Samsung&#8217;s tri-fold concept from 2020</figcaption></figure>

<p>Since 2020, there has been <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/02/13/samsung-says-tri-fold-smartphones-are-doable-but-thinks-the-world-is-not-ready-for-it/">talk about</a> Samsung developing a tri-fold smartphone. The company initially demonstrated the technology and filed a patent for it around that time. Additionally, the brand&#8217;s display arm showcased a concept of a triple-folding smartphone along with other unconventional phone designs during MWC this year.</p>

<p>The patent revealed the device will have not one, but two hinges. With one hinge enabling an inward fold and the other hinge enabling an outward fold, the phone will take on a Z shape when partially folded. What&#8217;s interesting about this design is that the outward-folding hinge will allow part of the screen to be used as a smartphone display, eliminating the need for a separate screen for the phone panel.</p>
