Samsung W22 5G foldable phone with Snapdragon 888 launched in China

Just as scheduled, Samsung has launched the W22 5G foldable smartphone in China. The foldable device will be a China-only model and is an ultra-high-end customized flagship mobile phone jointly created by Samsung and China Telecom.

Just like its predecessor, the Samsung W22 5G adopts a foldable design and features support for the S Pen stylus. The device also packs Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 chipset as well as other topnotch features such as 5G connectivity, under-screen camera, internal and external dual-screen 120Hz refresh rate support. Despite the improved features, the W22 5G will retail for 16,999 yuan (~$2,644) which is 3,000 yuan cheaper than the previous generation. We must note, though, that the W21 5G utilizes a Snapdragon 865+ chipset but Samsung didn’t include the Plus variant of the Snapdragon 888 on this model. The processor pairs with 16GB of RAM while there is a sole 512GB storage option.

The W22 5G adopts a symmetrically streamline design for the internal and external displays. The displays are protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. This is the strongest glass in the Samsung W series. The device comes in a sleek black color scheme with a gold accent at the hinges.

The small display is a 6.2-inch screen with a resolution of 2260×832 pixels and a pixel density of 387PPI. The bigger internal display is 7.6 inches in size and has a resolution of 2208×1768 pixels and a pixel density of 374PPI. As stated earlier, both the internal and external screens support a 120Hz refresh rate. The Eco2 OLED panel used for both displays reduces power consumption.

The W22 5G also arrives as the first W series phone to feature the under-screen camera technology. It packs a 4MP sensor and supports high-definition selfies. At the rear, it features a triple camera setup consisting of a 12MP wide-angle main camera, a 12MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensor.

The rear casing of the device features the “Heart to the World” logo which uses dynamic light and shadow to create a majestic and atmospheric texture that will show different visual effects from different angles.

In terms of battery, the W22 5G foldable phone is equipped with a 4400mAh battery that supports 25W fast charging, 10W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. The phone also supports IPX8 water resistance, which is yet another first for the W series. There is an S Pen stylus that can be handy for office or entertainment.

Reservations for the W22 5G will start at 10 o’clock on October 14 while the device will go on sale from October 22nd.

Samsung launched the W21 5G smartphone last year and now it seems to be the time that the device gets a successor. Today, Samsung has officially announced the launch date of its successor dubbed Samsung W22 5G.

The Samsung W22 5G will launch on October 13 at 7 PM local time in China. The device is expected to be available for purchase in China soon after its unveiling.

As learned by previous leaks, the Samsung W22 5G will bring the same design as the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. It won’t just borrow the exteriors, rather it will also have the same internal as the Z Fold 3. The W22 5G will come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

The foldable device is expected to have a 7.6-inch primary display and a 6.2-inch cover screen. The screens are expected to feature a 120Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass protection. The device is also rumoured to have Under-display-camera and a triple camera system.

Considering that it has the same design as the Z Fold 3, the W22 might also have a 4,400mAh battery with support for fast charging. The numbers might differ but we can expect a 25W wired fast charging and 11W wireless fast charging, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

As far as pricing is concerned, rumours have it that the phone may cost CNY 18,999(~$2,949). If this is to be believed then it will be way expensive than the Z Fold 3’s launch price of CNY 14,999(~$2,328).
