The Wiko X70 has officially been launched in China. This model was just announced in the region, with some features not commonly found in budget phones. You also get a bunch of other capable features as well, so here are all the details.

Wiko X70: What makes it special?

The Chinese brand has officially announced the Wiko X70, with support for satellite connectivity that is powered by BeiDou. It works independently of a cellular signal, so you don’t need a mobile connection. This is a feature often found in top of the line flagship smartphones and can be useful in emergency situations. On the front, the device sports a tall 6.7-inch OLED display with an FHD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Kunlun glass.

For optics, the rear has a 50MP main camera, while the front houses a 32MP shooter for selfies and video calls. The Wiko X70 features an IP54 rating for water and dust resistance. A massive 6,100mAh battery pack powers this model, which supports up to 40W wired fast charging. Other notable features include dual SIM support, a USB 2.0 port, and a slim 7.6mm body.

Huawei just announced the Wiko X70 in three color options in China, namely black, white, and light green. It is also available in three storage configurations, which include 8GB + 256GB, 12GB + 256GB, and 12GB + 512GB. This model has a 1,599 Yuan price tag, which is roughly 224 US Dollars.

It seems like Apple is now working on improving this technology with a secret partnership with SpaceX and T-Mobile.

Apple joins hands with SpaceX & T-Mobile for Starlink connectivity for iPhones

A new Bloomberg report claimed that the Cupertino based giant has been working with SpaceX and T-Mobile in secret to bring Starling satellite connectivity to the iPhones. This likely takes advantage of the partnership between T-Mobile and SpaceX that was also announced back in 2022. The report further adds that T-Mobile has already begun testing this feature for a limited number of iPhone users.

It is currently in the beta phase so it likely isn’t a polished experience at the moment. However, the feature is currently available to users that are running iPhones with iOS 18.3, which was recently released earlier this week. In an official note for the T-Mobile Starlin beta, the telecom brand stated that “You can now stay connected by texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.”

For those unaware, the carrier had previously stated that Samsung Galaxy phones would be getting Starlink communication support. The collaboration between T-Mobile and Starlink with Apple only supports sending messages via satellite communication. However, there are plans for bringing voice calls and data sometime in the future. In the past, the iPhone maker was rumored to be working with GlobalStart for its satellite connectivity feature on its smartphones. But now, the partnership might be expanding with T-Mobile who claimed that all users will get access to this feature later this year.

But there’s a catch, the company didn’t widely market this feature since it isn’t available to everyone. Samsung only offers satellite connectivity with one satellite operator, Skylo (which is only in partnership in the US with Verizon).

Apple

Apple is another brand that offers satellite connectivity, allowing you to send SOS messages from the iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 series. The service is more widely available on the newer models, unlike Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series.

Huawei

Huawei first introduced satellite connectivity with the launch of its flagship Mate 50 series. The lineup supported short text messages via the BeiDou satellite network. This was later upgraded to include audio calls in the newer Mate 60 Pro. The newer Pura 70 Ultra supports satellite communication which brings image sharing without an internet connection.

Google

With the Pixel 9 series, Google also joined the satellite communication race. It offers emergency SOS messaging in collaboration with SpaceX’s Starlink system.

Xiaomi

The Chinese tech giant’s Xiaomi 15 Pro, Xiaomi 14 Ultra, and MIX Fold 4 are two models that bring support for two-way satellite communication. So you get access to network access even in remote areas. The upcoming Xiaomi 15 Ultra is expected to feature this technology as well.

There are a bunch of other brands that also support satellite communication like Oppo (Find X8 Pro Satellite Edition), Nubia (Z60S Pro), Honor (X60), and others.

Do You Really Need Satellite Connectivity?

Satellite connectivity isn’t a feature that one would use every day. But depending on your lifestyle, it could be very important. For instance, f you frequently hike, camp, or travel to remote areas, satellite connectivity can be a lifesaver in emergencies. It also ensures that travellers can have some peace of mind in areas with unreliable cellular networks.

However, However, it’s not essential for everyone. The technology serves no purpose to urban users and can bring additional costs to the customers (if the service has a subscription model). Samsung seems to be getting closer to adding satellite communication to its Galaxy smartphone lineup. Android Authority discovered code strings related to this in mobile apps, strongly hinting that Samsung Galaxy phones could soon receive this upgrade.

To be specific, mentions of “satellite mode” and “emergency texts via satellite” were found in Samsung’s Emergency SOS, Messages, and Phone apps, respectively. This hints that the tech giant is preparing to enter the satellite connectivity race started by Apple. However, it’s still yet not clear when the feature will be released or the compatible phone models.

According to Android Authority, the feature might debut with the Android 15 operating system, though integrating it into Samsung’s One UI 7 interface could take longer.

Samsung introducing satellite communication in its phones wouldn’t be that surprising. The feature has been rumored ever since Apple introduced satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14.

Samsung executive Park Yong-in even promised two-way satellite connectivity for Galaxy phones in 2024, yet the feature is still absent from the latest Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6. It’s possible that a software update could enable satellite connectivity on these devices.

Unlike Apple’s limited emergency messaging focus, Samsung’s satellite connectivity is rumored to go beyond emergencies, allowing users to send messages through any app.

Interestingly, Google Pixel phones have also shown signs of satellite connectivity, although the feature is active for Pixel phones as well. This collective evidence suggests satellite messaging for Android phones, including Galaxy models, could be available in the coming months.

Leaks and rumors about the Galaxy S24 series having satellite connectivity have been swirling for some time. Looks like now we have a clearer picture. A recent leak, discovered by SamMobile, confirms this feature will indeed be present in the upcoming flagship phones.

Galaxy S24 leak confirms satellite connectivity

The leak includes a screenshot, presumably from a Galaxy S24 model, showing a feature called “Emergency texts via satellite” alongside its function. According to Samsung, “If you call emergency services when you’re out of range or not connected to a mobile network, we will connect you via a satellite network so you can send an emergency text.”

Once connected, you should be able to send text messages with precise GPS location. This is precisely how satellite connectivity works in other phones like iPhones. The feature is expected to be available across the entire Galaxy S24 lineup, regardless of the processor (Exynos or Snapdragon) powering each model.

Earlier this year, Samsung also unveiled a 5G modem technology that allows direct communication between phones and satellites. This means calls, texts, and data can flow even when cell towers are nowhere to be found.

While Samsung may introduce satellite connectivity with the S24, it might not be available everywhere initially. Similar to iPhones, it could be limited to specific countries at first, with expansion plans later. Currently, the satellite connectivity feature for iPhones is only available in 17 countries. 

Beyond satellite talk, the Galaxy S24 series leaks also hint at an AI push. Leak suggests the top-of-the-line S24 Ultra might be marketed as the “Generative AI phone” and Samsung has even filed trademarks for “AI Phone” and “AI Smartphone.”

Vivo’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Vivo X100 Pro, is rumored to feature satellite connectivity, according to a recent Weibo post by WhyLab. The device, model number V2309A, was recently spotted on MIIT certification with a listing stating two-way satellite connectivity. As per the report, the X100 pro would be able to send and receive text, pictures, voice recordings, and even videos without being in the range of a cellular network.

The feature is likely to be powered by a Unisoc V8821 chipset, which was announced back in July. Allegedly, Vivo was one of the partners of Unisoc in the development of this chipset. It is specifically designed for 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) that will handle the satellite connectivity. 

Satellite connectivity is a new feature that seems to be a big deal for this year’s flagships. It can be used to communicate with emergency services if you’re stranded in an area with no cell service.

Apple debuted satellite connectivity in the iPhone 14 series as a safety feature, and other Android brands are following suit. The recently announced Huawei Mate 60 Pro also offers full mobile connectivity through a satellite connection. Now, Vivo is joining the fray.

The Huawei Mate 60 series is expected to have power amplifier (PA) chips made by Chinese chipmakers. These PA chips are specifically designed for the Tiantong-1 satellite mobile communication system. The satellite system can be used for voice communication, image transmission, precise positioning, and data reporting.

PA chips play a critical role in devices that use these satellite features. They are currently integrated into Huawei’s Mate X3 and P60 series, both of which support two-way satellite communication via SMS. These chips amplify the high-frequency signal generated by the communication integrated circuit (RF-IC) to the required output level and supply it to an antenna. This amplification process is essential for enabling effective satellite communication, including voice calls.

The PA chips rumored to be integrated into the Huawei Mate 60 series are allegedly not manufactured by Huawei; instead, the company has entrusted this responsibility to an undisclosed Chinese chipmaker. While it’s not confirmed at this point, the inclusion of these chips suggests that Huawei Mate 60 smartphones might support voice calling via satellite.

How does Satellite connectivity work on smartphones?

Apple has partnered with Globalstar, a satellite communications company that operates a constellation of 48 low-orbit satellites. To send emergency messages via satellite, Apple developed a unique compression algorithm that shrinks text messages to a third of their original size. The emergency message is received by one of Globalstar’s satellites in low-earth orbit, which travels at speeds of approximately 16,000 mph. The satellite then passes the message down to ground stations located at key points all over the world.

Huawei Mate 50 and Mate 50 Pro smartphones can send short texts and use navigation thanks to China’s global BeiDou satellite network. However, Huawei’s description of the system suggests that the Mate 50 phones can only send texts via satellite, not receive them.

It’s possible the future phones will implement the technology in a different way. They may even bring voice and data connectivity.

What lies in the future?

Many Android brands could introduce this feature with their upcoming flagship phones. Qualcomm announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) that phone makers, including Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola, Nothing, and Honor, are ready to bring satellite communication capabilities to their phones. However, there are no specific details available as of now.

Qualcomm unveiled its Snapdragon Satellite technology in partnership with satellite service provider Iridium at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. It will allow Android smartphones to send two-way text messages and access other messaging apps using satellites in emergency situations, similar to what we have seen on iPhones.

In addition, a recent report suggests Google wants to bring satellite connectivity to Messages (Via Mishaal Rahmaan). The search giant appears to be adding the user interface (UI) elements required to initiate emergency SOS messages via satellite within its Messages app. It shouldn’t be a surprise since Google has already announced that Android 14 will support satellite connectivity.

T-Mobile also announced its own partnership with SpaceX to provide satellite connectivity on smartphones through Starlink satellites. MediaTek also joined the fray in February 2023 and showed off two chipsets that enable two-way satellite communication on smartphones. And let’s not forget the rumors about satellite connectivity on future Samsung flagships that have been circulating since last year.

The “Emergency SOS Via Satellite” feature implemented by Apple with the iPhone 14 series is gaining popularity. Almost every day, we hear about someone’s life being saved thanks to this feature. This brings users closer to choosing the iPhone when it’s time to buy a new phone. Other smartphone manufacturers, who do not want to lose their users, are also incorporating this feature. For example, Huawei recently announced that it will use the Emergency SOS feature on its new phones. Now, Samsung has taken a similar step on the Android front. Here are the details…

Samsung debuts satellite connectivity for smartphones using the Pixel 7’s modem

Samsung has announced its entry into the satellite connectivity arena for smartphones, following the lead of Apple’s iPhone 14 series. However, the company goes beyond Apple’s, as it enables users to send full messages, pictures, and even videos via satellite. The technology uses 5G NTN (non-terrestrial networks) to communicate, sending data from the smartphone to satellites before transmitting it back down to ground stations for transfer to the intended recipient or emergency services.

Samsung’s Exynos 5300 modem, the same modem used in Google’s Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, provides the technology to support satellite connectivity. Samsung has developed and simulated 5G NTN standard-based satellite technology on top of this modem, providing proof of concept. However, this functionality will not be available in current Google phones, as Samsung intends to incorporate it into future versions of its Exynos modems.

Earlier this month, Samsung announced that it was holding off on bringing satellite connectivity to its own smartphones until the technology was mature enough. The timing of this Exynos announcement is not ideal for Samsung’s own smartphones, as Galaxy flagships switch to solely using Qualcomm chips on a global scale. Qualcomm also recently announced its own form of satellite connectivity, but it is not yet available on any devices.

Satellite connectivity is poised to become one of the “next big things” in smartphones, providing a way for people to stay connected even in areas without traditional cellular coverage. The ability to send full messages, pictures, and videos via satellite could be particularly useful in emergency situations or remote areas where traditional communication methods are unavailable. With Samsung’s entry into this market, it remains to be seen how this technology will evolve and be adopted by consumers.
