<p>According to a <a href="https://www.telegraphindia.com/india/bengal-scientists-have-developed-the-worlds-hardest-known-self-healing-material/cid/1823049#" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TelegraphIndia</em> </a>report, the Bengal scientists collaborated in synthesizing an organic crystalline material that has a unique internal molecular structure, which is capable of repairing itself when damaged. To demonstrate this self healing capability, the scientists used a trigger mild to severe cracks in on this material. After making these cracks, the material begins to automatically reverse the damage within a fraction of a second after the needle pressure was withdrawn.</p>
<p>While self healing materials have been in existence for a while now in various forms, but these are usually soft and amorphous. In simpler terms, these usuall have an internal structure marked by irregularities and defects and need external agents like heat, light, or other chemical products to heal. Chilla Malla Reddy, a chemical sciences professor at the ISSER who led the research stated that &#8220;Our self healing material is 10 times harder than others.&#8221;</p>

<p>He further added that &#8220;it has a crystalline structure, a well ordered internal structure, the favored structure in most electronics and optical applications.&#8221; In other words, the material likely has vast possible applications in consumer electronic products as well. One of the researchers also added that &#8220;I can imagine an application for an everyday device. Such materials could even be used for mobile phone screens that will repair themselves if they fall and develop cracks.&#8221;</p>

<p>The new glass polymer was reportedly discovered by a mistake when a student named Yu Yanagisawa tried to stick the cut edges of the polymer with each other. When pressed with slight pressure by hand at 21 degrees Celsius, the cut polymers formed a strong sheet. Tech experts are of the view that this new polymer could be used as self-healing display on smartphones.</p>

<p>Earlier in this year, a self-healing material was created that could not only stitch itself back together within 24 hours, but also it could stretch 50 times its original size. This <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/04/04/chemists-invent-self-healing-smartphone-display/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new material</a> was made by chemists at the University of California at Riverside and University of Colorado. In August, Motorola was granted with patent for a glass-like plastic polymer can restore on its own when cracked.</p>
<p>Smartphone users have to spend huge amount of money for fixing cracked screens. However, the recent discoveries and patent filings suggest that we may soon see smartphones with self-healing displays in the market.</p>

<p>The ShatterShield display was first announced a couple of years ago in the DROID Turbo 2. Instead of using  glass substrate for the display, Motorola swapped it for a plastic substrate that prevents the screen from damage when it hits the ground.</p>
<p>The ShatterShield display on the  the Moto Z2 Force has gotten negative reviews due to the fact that it is easily prone to scratches. Motorola plans to change that and is reported to be working on a display that heals itself. This reminds us of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2013/11/14/self-healing-feature-on-lg-g-flex-smartphone/">LG G Flex</a>&#8216; self-healing back.</p>

<p>Motorola has been granted a patent for a smart glass technology that uses a “memory” glass-like polymer that remembers its original shape and reverts back to it. The interesting part is that it isn&#8217;t just a hardware process. The software side includes the phone detecting if there is a crack on the screen, prompting a healing process, and when accepted begins the repair.</p>

<p>The user will be requested to suspend usage of the phone for the time being. A thermal element control then heats up the damaged area of the display, causing the molecules to move back into shape. Motorola says the healing process isn&#8217;t 100% efficient but does manages to restore it to a certain level.</p>
<p>There is no info on when the technology will finally hit the market. So don&#8217;t go raising your hopes.</p>
