Last week, Sharp’s General Manager of mobile phone business unit in China posted a photo of the manufacturer’s yet-to-be released bezel-less smartphone. Apart from the device itself sharing similarities to the Essential PH-1, the entire image is also strikingly similar to the very first image of the Essential phone released to the public. A new image of the phone has surfaced and it wears an entirely different look.

Posted by the Vice President of Foxconn Technology Group, Luo Zhongsheng, the image shows several units of the phone undergoing testing in the factory.

Unlike the first image which has a nearly bezel design and looks like the Essential PH-1, the new device has moderately-sized bezels. The top bezel is significantly smaller than what you will find on most phones. The thickness can even be compared to that of the Samsung Galaxy S8.

The side bezels are okay but we are concerned about the lower bezel. From the image, we can see Sharp is using on-screen buttons but there is a thick black bar at the base which is part of the screen. That is a waste of space and defeats the purpose of the on-screen buttons. If it is going to be there permanently, why then is the lower bezel that thick?

We can’t tell if the phone has its fingerprint scanner in front or at the back, so we won’t pass a final judgement on the design.

The phone is also reported to come with a Snapdragon 630 and not a Snapdragon 660 processor. Release date is still unknown.

We had thought Sharp was planning to launch a bezel-less smartphone in China on May 25 but that never happened. The Japanese tech giant had shared a teaser pointing at an event slated for May 25. The date has long come and gone but that has not stopped the leaks surrounding the expected Sharp bezel-less phone from abating. The rumours started resurfacing since Sharp reopened its Weibo page, something that is seen as a sign that the company is preparing to make a comeback in the Chinese market.

A Weibo user has shared a couple of photos said to be renders of a bezel-less Sharp model. On a closer look, it could be noticed that the device comes with a design having very narrow bezels at the sides.The display covers the entire screen with just a small cut out in the upper edge for the selfie camera. The screen to body ratio is way higher than those of the Samsung Galaxy S8 or the Xiaomi Mix. Now, we would have thought this is a fan generated render that might not see the light of day but that perception was changed by the Mi Mix and other bezel-less devices that have hit the market since Xiaomi unveiled the Mix last year.

Still talking about the design, the bezel-less Sharp phone features a dual camera setup at the rear, aligned in a vertical direction. The device also has a ultra-thin body and looks more like the recently unveiled Essential Phone 1. Since there is no rear fingerprint sensor, the device will likely feature a front fingerprint sensor. In the absence of any form of bezel under the display, the sensor may be an onscreen sensor.

Japanese electronics giant Sharp has thrown up sort of a controversy with its latest press invite. The company recently released a poster hints at a launch event coming up on May 24 in Beijing, China.

The press invite didn’t state what the media event was for but it had the image of what looks like the edge of a bezel-less smartphone. The invitation also has as its theme a write-up which is in Chinese but talks about creating an unbounded media communication. The image and the caption of the invitation both points at the likelihood of a borderless Sharp smartphone coming.

Sharp is not new to bezel-less screen technology as its Aquos series have been rumoured severally to have a completely bezel-less phone coming. But the problem is usually that Sharp’s mobile phones are not readily available outside China. So, we cannot say if this is actually a new bezel-less phone coming. It could as well be another smart gadget like a SmartTV. We can’t say for sure so, we’ll have to wait until May 24 when the pack will be unwrapped. We do hope, though, that this is a bezel-less phone with Sharp’s awesome display technology at work inside.
