The company has been facing issues with the production of its products due to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/chip-shortage">chip shortage</a> and it seems that the trouble for the company has now increased.</p>
<p>According to the <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-12/apple-aapl-to-cut-iphone-production-targets-due-to-chip-shortage">latest report</a>, Apple is cutting down the production of its iPhone 13 models by as many as 10 million units because of the chip shortages.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-413040 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Featured.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple iPhone 13 Pro iPhone 13 Pro Max Featured" width="4000" height="2250" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Featured.jpg 4000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Featured-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Featured-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Featured-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Featured-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Featured-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Featured-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-iPhone-13-Pro-iPhone-13-Pro-Max-Featured-1920x1080.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 4000px) 100vw, 4000px" /></p>
<p>The technology giant was expected to produce about 90 million units of its newly launched smartphones in the fourth quarter of this year but it appears that the manufacturing partners of Apple have informed the company that the total will be lower because of shortage of components from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/broadcom">Broadcom</a> and Texas Instruments.</p>
<p>The development comes at a time when the supply for the Apple iPhone 13 series smartphones is also constrained. While delivery times for some of the models were already pushed, the situation could worsen with the holiday period about to begin soon.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> iPhone 13 models use Broadcom AFEM-8215 front-end module and a Broadcom BCM59365 wireless power receiver, along with display power management IC, array driver, flash LED driver and dual repeater from Texas Instruments.</p>
<p>It also remains to be seen how the chip shortage will impact the upcoming MacBook Pro models powered by the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-m1x">Apple M1X chipset</a>, set to be officially launched next week. Recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had said that Apple would cut its MacBook shipments in half due to component shortages. This is believed to be related to the lack of power management integrated circuits.</p>

The news arrives as the global smartphone market saw a slight decline quarter on quarter.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/apple-achieves-record-june-quarter-shipments-xiaomi-becomes-second-largest-smartphone-brand-globally/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Coutnerpoint Research</em></a> report, the market saw a 7 percent decline over last quarter but saw a 19 percent growth year on year over 2020. While the decline was due to the ongoing component shortages that vendors are facing at the moment, the YoY growth arrives as consumer demand grew since the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/coronavirus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Coronavirus</a> outbreak last year. During this quarter, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a> managed to become the second largest smartphone brand in the world, although, the Cupertino based giant fell to the third sport.</p>
<p>However, the brand still managed to register record second quarter shipments primarily due to the consistent demand and supply for its<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-12/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> iPhone 12</a> series. Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung </a>still held the top spot while <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oppo</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Vivo</a> retainted their rankings in the top 5 smartphone vendor list. Research Analyst, Aman Chaudhary added that &#8220;Global smartphone wholesale shipment revenues eclipsed $96 billion, up 25 percent YoY but declined 16 percent sequentially. This comes at a time when the industry was facing supply constraints. Apple captured a record second-quarter revenue share of 41 percent driven by continuing demand for the iPhone 12 Series followed by Samsung, OPPO, Xiaomi and vivo.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-402752 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/CounterPoint-Research.png?x44794" alt="Apple" width="1772" height="914" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/CounterPoint-Research.png 1772w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/CounterPoint-Research-300x155.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/CounterPoint-Research-768x396.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/CounterPoint-Research-1024x528.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/CounterPoint-Research-696x359.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/CounterPoint-Research-1068x551.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/CounterPoint-Research-814x420.png 814w" sizes="(max-width: 1772px) 100vw, 1772px" /></p>
<p>Notably, Apple&#8217;s shipments fell by 18 percent quarter on quarter but grew by a significant 30 percent year on year to reach 48.9 million units in Q2 2021. Unlike certain other brands, the iPhone maker was not as severely affected by the ongoing semiconductor shortages due to its strong industry relationships. The company&#8217;s revenue also grew by a sizeable 52 percent in the same period over last year.</p>

The 12.9-inch model also features a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mini-led">Mini-LED display</a>.</p>
<p>The variant with the bigger screen is set to launch in the second half of this year but the orders place today on the company&#8217;s own <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/online-store">online store</a> in the United States are estimated to deliver as late as mid-July &#8212; about two months later, <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/2021/05/05/12-9-inch-ipad-pro-delivers-as-late-as-mid-july/">reports MacRumors</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-385382 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/image.png?x44794" alt="Apple iPad Pro" width="817" height="435" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/image.png 817w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/image-300x160.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/image-768x409.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/image-696x371.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/image-789x420.png 789w" sizes="(max-width: 817px) 100vw, 817px" /></p>
<p>However, this is not the case for the 11-inch model as some configurations of the tablet are available for delivery by the end of this month.</p>
<p>The reason behind delayed shipments of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-ipad-pro-12-9-2021/">Apple iPad Pro 2021</a> with a 12.9-inch display seems to the suppliers of the panel reportedly facing yield issues for the production. On top of that, the industry is also facing a global chip shortage and it seems that the issues could last into next year.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s likely that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ipad">iPad</a> Pro is facing these issues given that the device was launched in April this year and the shipment estimates are for July this year, underscoring the supply chain and production issues faced by the company.</p>
<p>The same is the case with the new iMac 2021 as many configurations are showing shipments for mid-to-late June in the United States while the four-pack of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-airtag">Apple AirTag</a> will be arriving in mid-June.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20210407PR203.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>DigiTimes</em> </a>report, the semiconductor shipments will rise by 13 percent in 2021, reaching a record high of 1.135 trillion units. This would also be the third time that semiconductor units have surpassed the one trillion mark in a calendar year. Furthermore, the 13 percent rise that arrives a year after the coronavirus pandemic had adversely impacted the global economy and affected shipments for the industry as well.</p>
<p>Back in the period between 2004 and 2007, the shipments broke through the 400, 500, and 600 billion unit levels, just before the global financial meltdown led to a sharp fall in shipments in 2008 and 2009. Since then, the industry and the shipments bounced back strong, with 2010 seeing shipments surpass 700 billion units. Since then, another strong increase was back in 2017, with a 12 percent growth that had it reach 900 billion units.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-326780 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/36148-66984-32042-54433-wafer-chip-production-via-tsmc-xl-xl.jpg?x44794" alt="Semiconductor" width="870" height="485" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/36148-66984-32042-54433-wafer-chip-production-via-tsmc-xl-xl.jpg 870w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/36148-66984-32042-54433-wafer-chip-production-via-tsmc-xl-xl-300x167.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/36148-66984-32042-54433-wafer-chip-production-via-tsmc-xl-xl-768x428.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/36148-66984-32042-54433-wafer-chip-production-via-tsmc-xl-xl-696x388.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/36148-66984-32042-54433-wafer-chip-production-via-tsmc-xl-xl-753x420.jpg 753w" sizes="(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px" /></p>
<p>The first time shipments crossed the one trillion unit mark was back in 2018. Notably, the news also arrives despite the world suffering from a major shortage of semiconductors. This has caused various industries like the automobile industry. On the other hand, the growth of the shipments saw industries like autonomous systems, cloud computing systems, contactless systems, and more see the strongest rise.</p>

<p>The primary reason for the decline in sales is apparently due to the lackluster sales of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-12-mini/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">iPhone 12 mini</a> from Apple, as per <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=2533" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TheElec</em> </a>report. Last year, the Cupertino based giant launched four models in its iPhone 12 series. While the lineup overall saw great success across the globe with higher than expected sales thanks to its 5G support, the lowest end entry model saw lackluster demand. The sales of the 5.4 inch iPhone 12 mini was lower than what the company had anticipated.</p>
<p>Notably, the South Korean display maker is the sole supplier for the OLEDs on the Mini variant of the iPhone 12. The first quarter of a year is usually known to be an off season for smartphone sales, although, Samsung Display&#8217;s OLED display supply to Chinese companies remained strong in the same month. These &#8216;rigid&#8217; OLED panels use glass substrates and are relatively cheaper than flexible OLED panels that use plastic (polyimide), which are found in flagship handsets like the iPhone and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-s21/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy S21</a> lineup.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-340451 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/oled.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="600" height="342" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/oled.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/oled-300x171.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>The global shipments of OLED panels reached 53 million units, marking a decline of 9 percent. Out of this figure, Samsung Display accounted for 45 million units or about 85 percent of the total. On the other hand, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg-display/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">LG Display</a> shipped 6 million units in January 2021. In terms of rankings, Samsung Display arrived first, followed by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/boe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">BOE</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tianma/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tianma</a> as second and third respectively.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20201008PD206.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>DigiTimes</em> </a>report, the demand for smartphone displays is currently the largest application segment for small to mid sized LCD panels. Furthermore, this segment is expected to recover in 2021. The report states that the global handset display shipments will grow by a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 3.1 percent from 2020 to 2025, with smartphone applications rising at a higher CAGR of 5.9 percent.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/08/android-10-update-may-arrive-for-the-nokia-5-1-today-android-11-roadmap-may-follow-shortly-after/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Android 10 update may arrive for the Nokia 5.1 today; Android 11 roadmap may follow shortly after</a></strong></h6>
<p>Although, this also includes AMOLED displays, which are expected to reach 40 percent of the total handset display panel segment by 2023. This would result in the LCD smartphone display&#8217;s CAGR fall by 0.8 percent during the five year period, as per estimation. For those unaware, AMOLED panels have been growing in popularity with each passing year.</p>

<p>However, the rise of IoT applications within the industry for automotive, smart speakers, and household appliances will have the related IoT applications aso boost the sales of small to mid sized LCD panels starting from 2022. The report estimates that these displays for IoT applications will grow by a CAGR of 6.1 percent between 2020 to 2025.</p>

<p>According to <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=1658" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TheElec</em> </a>report, a UBI Research analysis has revealed that the OLED panel shipments will reach 383 million units and sales worth 28 billion US Dollars in the second half od 2020. This marks a significant rise of 66 percent and 107 percent respectively when compared to the first half. It is also indicative of the growing OLED market, which has already surpassed the LCD panels.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/05/group-sold-7000-fake-huawei-40-yuan-devices/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Group sold 7,000 Fake Huawei devices by rebranding phones worth 40 Yuan ($6)</a></strong></h6>
<p>In the first half of 2020, OLED shipments arrived at just 231 million units, which marked a drop of 29 percent when compared to the shipments from the second half of last year. The sales during this period also fell by 36 percent in comparison to 2019, with the overall sales value coming in at just 13.53 billion US Dollars. Notably, the rise in the second half of 2020 would likely also be influenced by major smartphone launches like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei-mate-40/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei Mate 40</a> series and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-12/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple iPhone 12</a> series as well.</p>

<p>Furthermore, smartphone OLED display panel shipments accounted for 190 million units in the first half of 2020. In other words, smartphone displays amounted to 82.2 percent of all OLED panel sales across the globe. For sales, this was evaluated at 11.26 billion US Dollars or 83.3 percent of the total sales in the entire OLED display market. These panels were also used in smartwatches, which was the second highest in terms of shipment volumes, with 33.48 million units or 14.4 percent of the total shipments.</p>

<p>Despite the increased inspection for imported shipments, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/dell/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dell</a> has a few of its shipments cleared last week. Although roughly 130 shipments are still stuck at Indian ports, including shipment containers for several parts for servers and desktop computers. However, these measures by the Indian government are temporary and should ease up soon with one official stating, &#8220;We cannot keep checking 100 percent of shipments forever. Shipments of non-Chinese companies being impacted will be cleared on priority.&#8221;</p>

<p>Similarly, the automobile has also faced disruption in operations due to delayed shipments. An example being MG Motor that has had its shipments stuck in a South Indian port. The finance minister of India has yet to respond to this situation, although, two officials at the ministry that oversees the customs department did respond stating that the inspection measures were temporary and will ease up soon. We will be providing more updates to the situation so stay tuned.</p>

The stats revealed that <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> shipped a total of 25 million units, 10% less than that of the same quarter in 2018. However, Xiaomi released a press statement faulting the figure as incorrect.</p>
<p>The Chinese tech giant said in the press statement that it actually shipped 27.5 million smartphones in Q1 2019. IDC has now announced it will republish the report with the new figure next week.</p>
<figure id="attachment_242853" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-242853" style="width: 780px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-242853" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Xiaomi-Mi-9-1.jpg?x44794" alt="Xiaomi Mi 9" width="780" height="438" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Xiaomi-Mi-9-1.jpg 780w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Xiaomi-Mi-9-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Xiaomi-Mi-9-1-768x431.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-242853" class="wp-caption-text">Xiaomi Mi 9</figcaption></figure>
<p>You might be wondering what the fuss is about. These figures are important to investors as they need to know how well the companies they back are performing. A lower number can influence the trust of investors in the business.</p>
<p>IDC&#8217;s report differs from that of similar agencies like Canalys, Counterpoint, and StrategyAnalytics. All three reported Xiaomi shipped 27.8 million, 27. 8 million, and 27.5 million units respectively which is much higher than IDC&#8217;s 25 million units.</p>

<p>Xiaomi is currently one of the top five manufacturers in the smartphone market. It has a market share of 8% and is still expanding its reach. Last month, it launched the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-go/">Redmi Go</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-7/">Redmi 7</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-note-7/">Redmi Note 7</a> in Nigeria, marking its re-entry into Africa.</p>
