Sony rises to the top with PlayStation 5, leading the Q3 2023 gaming console market

In the third quarter of 2023, the global game console market experienced a remarkable surge, marking the strongest Q3 performance since 2017, according to a report by TechInsights. With an 11% year-on-year increase, the total shipments reached 9.1 million units. This upswing follows a robust first half of the year, where sales grew by 32% and 19% in the first and second quarters, respectively.

Sony Leads in Game Console Market with Impressive Growth in Q3 2023

Sony, with its PlayStation 5, has made a significant comeback, clinching the top spot in the global gaming console market. The company now holds a commanding 54% market share, a dramatic 42% year-on-year growth. This period marked Sony’s highest Q3 shipment volume to date and the second-best quarter for PlayStation 5 since its 2020 launch. Riding on this momentum, Sony is on track to meet its ambitious target of 25 million total shipments for the fiscal year. To further boost its market presence, Sony plans to unveil a higher-capacity PS5 Slim in the final quarter of 2023.

In Q2 2023, Sony’s financial results showed an 8% increase in sales to $18.5 billion, with gaming and network services sales up 32% to $6.31 billion, driven by strong PlayStation 5 sales of 4.9 million units. Spider-Man 2 sold over 5 million units, contributing to a 26% rise in software sales.

Meanwhile, Nintendo, despite a 15% drop in year-on-year shipments, maintains a strong presence with a 27% market share, largely buoyed by the continued success of flagship games and the “Super Mario Bros. Movie”. However, the absence of a new major release in Q3 led to Nintendo falling to second place. Looking forward, Nintendo is set to introduce an upgraded version of the Switch in early 2024 and aims to hit 15 million unit shipments for the fiscal year.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S also faced challenges, witnessing a 6% decline in shipments and totaling around 1.8 million units. Despite this, the Xbox Series X remains popular, holding a 72% product share in the Xbox lineup, complemented by the introduction of a 1TB version of the Xbox Series S.

Smartphone Shipments Decline Narrows in Europe; Market to Move Towards Greener Pastures in 2024

A new Canalys report unveils the continuous decline in smartphone shipments but hints at a slight increase in demand next year. It also cites that the decline has been narrowed to 6%, with total shipments reaching 32 million in Q3 2023. However, Samsung and Apple retained their top positions with a market share of 25% and 22%, respectively. Xiaomi, Motorola, and TCL garnered good sales in the quarter, and their overall sales are expected to grow in Europe.

Samsung and Apple Sales Saga in Europe – Q3 2023

There have been challenges for Apple and Samsung this quarter, as the retailers tried to reduce stocks of old smartphones, which led to a decline in shipments. Even Samsung’s strategy to shift focus from the Galaxy A Series to the more profitable mid-range smartphone, the S Series Flagship, and foldable led to a resilient demand. For Apple, the USB Type-C cable-led iPhone 15 increased its shipments by 59%. But, to reduce overstocking of iPhone 14 and older models, the retailers paused the shipments, which led to an overall decrease in shipments in Q3 2023.

Samsung remained at the top with 35% overall smartphone market share, and Apple at 22%. Xiaomi’s strong demand in the mid-range with its Redmi Series led to fetching 19% of the market share. Motorola and TCL gained 5% and 3% market share, respectively.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi, Motorola, and TCL registered significant growth in shipments, but it was limited to the low-to-mid-range segment. Buffer created by Samsung’s focus shift from low-end to high-end market paved the way for these OEMs to usher. Xiaomi gained the largest chunk with the sale of Redmi and Redmi Note 12 models in the Central and Eastern Europe regions. Motorola maintained its prowess with its best quarterly performance and registered a 30% YoY increase in shipments.

Better 2024 for Smartphone OEMs in Europe

“Canalys predicts the market will grow by 4% in 2024. The rest of this year remains important for vendors seeking to redeem their performance in 2023, start 2024 with positive momentum, and clear out channel inventory ahead of new product launches in the first half of 2024,” said Runar Bjørhovde, Analyst at Canalys.

Though the year 2023 remained not so well for the smartphone companies globally, as per the market experts, the European market will improve in 2024. It will move 4% up due to a refresh cycle of the mid-range devices bought in 2020 and 2021. Other reasons and the market’s positive momentum will further fetch good sales in the coming year. Even the ongoing festive season and enticing discounts are luring customers to grab or replace their smartphones.

PC Shipments Drops in the US Markets During the Third Quarter; Claims Canalys Report

Canalys has published its report for the PC shipment in the US market during Q3 of 2022. The report claims that the PC shipments in the market fell sharply by 12.1% in the third quarter over year-on-year growth. The report further reveals that laptops, in particular, have been around a 12% decline in the market and the desktop market, on the other hand, has seen a small 1% rise in the number of shipments. Dell, HP, Apple, Lenovo and Acer were among the top manufacturers.

Surprisingly, only Apple and Acer have witnessed some shipment growth. The remaining brands on the list have all seen a significant drop in their market share. More conservative business expenditures, along with weaker demand from the consumer and education sectors, were the main causes of the significant decline in laptop shipment volume. Although the consumer and education sectors are two of the product’s biggest clients, their demand in the third quarter was not actually sufficient.

Even though the third quarter was extremely difficult for PC suppliers, the fourth quarter’s prospects aren’t any better. The American holiday season should boost sales a little, but generally, Canalys predicts that the market will continue to decline. People are reducing back on their purchases of technology devices as a result of rising prices. The claims seem to be a little disappointing for the manufacturers present in the US markets.

According to the analyst, things will start to improve in 2023. It predicts that demand from the educational sector will begin to slowly increase in the following year, with the bulk of equipment upgrades taking place in 2024. There’s a long way to go until that. From a macroeconomic standpoint, the Federal Reserve is continuing to raise interest rates, which could result in additional job losses and increase loan costs, further reducing disposable income. The length of the recovery period will determine when consumer demand for PCs will start to increase.

According to Brian Lynch, a Canalys Research Analyst, “the U.S. PC market was already in a protracted phase of recession as both consumer and educational demand suffered with inflation and saturation.” The business sector, which was once robust, has now started to dwindle and posted its first year-over-year loss in 2022.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Shipments In Trouble Due To Foxconn Factory Protests

Apple launched the latest iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series of flagship smartphones a couple of months back. For the first time, the devices come with a significant difference between both lineups.

The Apple iPhone 14 Pro series has good demand in the market compared to the standard iPhone 14 lineup but it appears that the company will soon be facing shipment issues for the popular iPhone models because of its contract manufacturer Foxconn.

According to a new report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, shipments of Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models in the fourth quarter of this year will be significantly lower than the market consensus due to protests at Foxconn’s main factory in China.

The Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou, China, has been significantly affected by the protests by the workers over unfavorable working conditions, which he believes will adversely impact the Q4 2022 shipments forecast by around 20 percent or about 70-75 million units.

He adds that the average capacity utilization rate at the factory in the month of November was only 20 percent, but that is expected to increase to about 30 percent to 40 percent in December. He believes that the production issues could result in iPhone revenue being “significantly lower than the market consensus by 20–30% or more” this quarter.

Ming-Chi Kuo further notes that Pegatron and Luxshare, two other contract manufacturers for Apple, have each received about 10 percent of iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max orders from Foxconn. However, those orders aren’t expected to start shipping until late December or early January of the next year.

Currently, the delay time for the Apple iPhone 14 Pro models is at least four weeks when the device is ordered through the company’s official online store in the United States as the Cupertino-based tech giant is struggling to maintain supply.

Samsung Reportedly Plans To Reduce Its Smartphone Shipments By 13%

Samsung, the world’s leading smartphone maker for years, has not been able to sell as many smartphone units as it had planned because of several reasons, including the supply-chain issue caused by COVID-19 and the dull economic outlook in several countries.

As global smartphone shipments have declined, affecting almost all companies, the South Korean giant Samsung isn’t immune. A new report from Taiwan Economic Daily (via ITHome) claims that the company plans on reducing its smartphone shipments next year.

As per the report, Samsung is planning to reduce its smartphone shipments in the year 2023 by 13 percent, which roughly turns out to be 30 million units. This is mainly because of the decline in the smartphone market, because of which the company isn’t able to sell as many smartphones as it had planned, and the market continues to see weaker demand.

While Samsung was able to increase its market share in terms of shipments for the third quarter of this year (Q3 2022) compared to the previous quarter (Q2 2022), the company saw an overall decline of around eight percent when compared year-on-year.

It isn’t just Samsung that is bearish on the market situation. Some smartphone component suppliers, including Japan-based Murata and Taiwan-based Yageo, Tongxin Electic, and Duntai, among others, also share similar sentiments.

Murata, a leader in passive component MLCC (Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors), which provides electronic modules and components for Apple iPhone, Samsung smartphones, and others, has warned that smartphone demand in Greater China will not show signs of recovery and it will continue to see the decline next year.

Tongxin Electric, a mobile phone sensor component supplier, has said that it may need more than two to three quarters to destock. The company estimates that in the second quarter of next year or at the end of the third quarter, the related business of the company will rebound.

Samsung accounted for over 61% of total foldable smartphone shipments globally in 2021

Samsung has been one of the leading smartphone brands when it comes to foldable smartphones and with being an early entrant, it basically created a new category of products in the market.

The early bet from the South Korean giant appears to have been paid off given that the company is now dominating the foldable smartphones market.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3

A new report from analytics firm Omdia reveals that Samsung accounted for more than 61 percent of the market share for the shipment of foldable smartphones in the year 2021. It also shared that out of the top 11 foldable devices available in the market, five of them come from Samsung.

The report goes on to add that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 was the most popular foldable smartphone, having shipped around 4.6 million units. This is quite an achievement for the South Korean-based technology giant as it has managed to increase shipments from 1.1 million units of Galaxy Z Flip in 2020.

Apart from making some minor but important changes to the Galaxy Z Flip 3 smartphone after learnings from its predecessor, the company also priced it significantly lower than its predecessor, nearly $400 cheaper, which helped boost its sales.

On the other hand, the company also slashed the price of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 by $200 compared to its predecessor, which took the price of the device to $1,799, leading to a huge increase in shipments from 700,000 units in 2020 to 2.5 million units in 2021.

The Omdia report adds that the combined shipments of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 smartphones account for 7.1 million units, which is over 61 percent of the total number of phones delivered. It is being speculated that this year, Samsung’s devices could account for over 70% of the foldable smartphone market globally.

India sees 11% growth in smartphone shipments in 2021; Xiaomi leads with 24% share

Smartphone shipments in the Indian market have witnessed a growth of 11 percent year-on-year in the year 2021, despite several issues hitting the smartphone industry, ranging from a shortage of components to supply chain disruption.

The latest report from Counterpoint Research adds that the country saw shipments of 169 million units in 2021. However, the shipments in the fourth quarter (i.e. Q4 2021) witnessed a decline of 8 percent.

Chinese brand Xiaomi managed to retain its position at the top, covering a 24 percent market share. Unlike previous years, the company’s growth was quite limited to just 2 percent year-on-year.

The good news for Xioami is that the company managed to get more share in the premium segment this time, witnessing a massive growth of 258 percent. It’s noteworthy that the report considers devices priced above ₹30,000 as premium phones.

South Korean giant Samsung came in second with a market share of 18 percent while Vivo took the third spot as the company managed to capture about 15 percent of the market share, followed by Vivo’s sister companies Realme and OPPO with 14 percent and 10 percent market share respectively.

Talking about the 5G smartphones, Samsung emerges as the leading brand in the Indian market in Q4 2021. The South Korean giant also led in the mid-range segment with a 28 percent market share. The brand also managed to grow its share by triple digits in the foldable smartphones category.

Apple emerged as the fastest-growing smartphone brand in 2021 with 108 percent year-on-year growth. It led the premium segment in India with a massive 44 percent market share and the brand is now getting aggressive in the country, which could further help cement its position in the premium category.

Global PC shipments grew 15% in 2021; Lenovo tops with 24.1% market share

The sales of PC were expected to drop in 2021 because of the ongoing global chip shortage but instead of sales dropping, the year witnessed growth in terms of PC shipments globally, reaching 341 million units.

As per the latest report from Canalys, the PC shipments for the year 2021 increased 15 percent compared to 2020 and 27 percent when compared to shipments in 2019. Even though the Q4 2021 numbers were up just 1 percent over the previous year, 2021 was still the best year since 2012.

Ishan Dutt, a senior analyst as Canalys, says in the report: “For the market to post double-digit growth over an impressive 2020, despite the constant cloud of supply constraints, speaks volumes about how strong PC demand has been over the last 12 months.”

Lenovo emerged as the leading brand, capturing 24.1 percent market share while HP closely follows at the second position with a 21.7 percent market share. Dell grabbed the third spot with its 17.4 percent market share.

Apple stands fourth with an 8.5 percent market share but the Cupertino-based technology giant had the largest growth number year-on-year at 28.3 percent. Acer was second with 21.8 percent growth but stands at fifth in terms of shipments with a 7.1 percent share.

It is being reported that the education market may be saturated and the chip shortages are expected to continue into the new year, which could affect the growth. However, Canalys still believes that 2022 will be a strong year for PC sales.

DIZO Watch 2 sells over 100,000 units within 40 days of getting launched in India

Apple iPhone 13 series expected to sell over 80 million units this quarter

Apple has seen some impressive numbers related to the sales of the iPhone 13 series and now the company is reportedly set to increase its lead with the bumper sales in the current quarter as well, i.e. from October to December this year.

According to a new report from Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives (via AppleInsider), the Cupertino-based technology giant is estimated to sell more than 80 million iPhones in the current holiday quarter, which happens to be Apple’s first fiscal quarter for 2022.

In his note, Ives writes: “Despite the chip shortage and Rubik’s Cube logistics that Apple (and every other technology, auto, and retail vendor) is dealing with we are seeing tremendous demand trends both in the US and China for iPhone 13 which is a positive sign that Apple could exceed selling 80 million iPhone units in the quarter with stronger Pro versions driving higher ASPs.”

It is further noted that between Black Friday and Christmas, the company could sell 40 million units of iPhones. Not just that, the company is also expected to sell up to 100 million Apple AirPods in this quarter.

This is in line with what J. P. Morgan had predicted based on the delivery times for the iPhone 13 series. The investment firm noted that with the delivery timeframe growing longer for the 2021 models of the iPhones, demand is surpassing supply by around 15%.

Apple’s iPhone production, like many other products, has been suffering from the global chip shortage and the estimated shipping time for the iPhone 13 was spanning weeks and has cost the company $6 billion. As per the report, Apple suppliers have managed to ease the shortage of certain components and with a production boom, it will be able to address the issues of availability and demand.

Apple shipped 6.5 million MacBook devices in Q3 2021, reports Strategy Analytics

Apple has been focused on revamping its MacBook lineup and the efforts seem to be paying off as the company shipped around 6.5 million MacBooks in the third quarter of this year, increasing its market share.

This is being attributed to the strong demand for the Apple MacBook Air which was one of the first devices to come powered by the Apple Silicon‘s first chipset — M1.

The report coming from the market research firm Strategy Analytics, the shipment of Apple MacBooks grew 10 percent year-on-year and the company has managed to capture around 10 percent of the overall market share.

With this, the Cupertino-based technology giant is now the fourth-largest laptop brand, just behind Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Apple managed to increase its market share because of the surge in demand for the heavily discounted MacBook Air in the third quarter. In Q3 2021, Mac revenue hit an all-time high of $9.1 billion, ticking up 1.6 percent year-over-year.

Overall, the notebook sector grew 8 percent year-over-year. That figure would have been higher had it not been for component shortages, rising manufacturing costs, and supply chain issues, says Strategy Analytics analyst Chirag Upadhyay.

For the fourth consecutive quarter, Lenovo topped the chart with 15.3 million notebooks shipments and a 23 percent share of the market, registering a 5 percent growth compared to the previous year. HP followed with 14.3 million units shipped and a 21 percent market share, reporting a decline of 5 percent year-over-year. Lastly, Dell managed to ship 12.2 million units, accounting for 18 percent of the market share.

Chinese smartphone makers increase usage of OLED panels: UBI Research

Smartphone manufacturers are now moving ahead with the increased usage of OLED screen panels despite the COVID-19 pandemic and sanctions from the United States, as per the report from market research firm UBI Research.

The report adds that about 57 smartphones have been launched in China in the first quarter of this year that uses OLED screen panel. This is double the models launched in the same duration last year.

The UBI Research report adds that companies like OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi are launching new smartphones with OLED panels to fill the gap left by the Chinese giant Huawei because of the sanctions from the United States.

With the uptick in the number of such devices, there’s an increase in the sales for the Chinese panel makers. It adds that the smartphone OLED sales have reached $990 million in the first quarter of this year, representing an increase of 38.3 percent YoY.

The growth is attributed to Chinese panel makers manufacturing high-resolution OLED panels, resulting in increased unit prices. However, the report notes that the Chinese panel makers’ use of organic material didn’t increase much. Last year, around 13.8 metric tonnes of organic light-emitting material were used.

Now, more and more China-based smartphone manufacturers are launching smartphones in the mid-to-high-end segment. To meet the demand, the Chinese panel makers are also developing their own foldable OLED panels.

Xiaomi Mi Band 6 fitness tracker’s global shipments cross 3 million mark

About a month ago, Lei Jun, Founder and CEO of Xiaomi had announced that the shipments of Mi Band 6 has crossed the mark of one million units. Now, Zeng Xuezhong, Vice President of Xiaomi Group and President of Mobile Phone Division has posted on Weibo that the total global shipments of Mi Band 6 have exceeded three million units.

For the uninitiated, the Xiaomi Mi Band 6 is the latest version of the wearable fitness tracker from the Chinese giant launched in March this year. It comes in two variants, a standard model without NFC support and another with NFC support.

While the Mi Band 6 was announced in March, the device went on sale in China from 2nd April and in less than a month, overall sales of the wearable crossed 1 million. Now, in about two months, the sales have crossed the 3 million mark globally.

The standard version is priced at 229 yuan which is approximately $36 while the NFC variant costs 279 yuan which roughly converts to $44.

Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 6

The Mi Band 6 features a 1.56 inch AMOLED color display which amounts to a 50 percent increase in the display area and offers 326PPI. Xiaomi ditched the physical touch button and has introduced support for gestures.

It is capable of tracking the blood oxygen levels along with being capable of monitoring heart rate and users’ sleep as well. Furthermore, the fitness tracker also features other health and sports tracking features, including 30 sports modes with support for tracking running, cycling, walking, and many more.

There are six auto-detect exercise modes, 24×7 heart rate monitoring (PPG), and SpO2 (Blood Oxygen measurement). The device is rated 5ATM for water resistance and is powered by a 125mAh LiPo battery with up to 14 days of battery life.

Top laptop companies ship 17 million units in October

According to the latest report from DigiTimes Research, the top five leading laptop companies saw their combined shipments in the month of October 2020 reach a new monthly high for the year.

The report claims that the shipments for the leading five companies reached over 17 million units in October. This is mainly attributed to the consumer markets in the United States and Europe entering the peak season and increased demand for these devices because of the COVID-19 pandemic as more and more people are working from home.

Thanks to the strong demand for both — consumer and education models in laptops, HP retained its leadership position in the market for the month of October. However, Dell managed to unseat Lenovo for the second position, thanks to its growth in the Chromebook shipments because of the US education market.

Lenovo‘s shipments slipped in the month of October as the company fulfilled its education-use Chromebook orders from Japan. Also, the demand for notebooks in the company’s home market China was weaker than that in the US and Europe last month.

Recently, Strategy Analytics published a report for the global notebook PC market and revealed that the shipments reached a total of 62.2 million units in Q3 2020 with a growth rate of 34 percent Year-on-Year.

It also reported that HP came first with 14.7 million shipments, closely followed by Lenovo with 14.6 million units who was the market leader in the previous quarter. Whereas, the third, fourth, and fifth places were occupied by Dell, Apple, and Acer with 8.5, 6.0, and 4.9 million units respectively.

Smartphone OLED panel shipments drop 23% in Q2 2020: UBI Research

The recent quarter has not been good in terms of smartphone shipments because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic not only led to a drop in smartphone shipments but has also impacted the shipment for components.

As per the latest report from UBI Research, the shipment of the OLED display panels for smartphones dropped to 87 million units in the second quarter of this year. This represents a drop of 23.1 percent compared to the same period last year.

While the shipments for OLED panels declined, it was somewhat offset by the growth in flexible OLED panels. The same report reveals that the shipments for flexible OLED displays grew by 38 percent compared to last year.

The report notes that the drop in the shipments of rigid OLED panels is a result of less number of mid-range smartphones getting launched from the Chinese brands in the second quarter of this year. Since they focused more on flagship-grade devices, the shipments for flexible OLED panels witnessed growth.

India’s PC market declines 37.3% YoY during Q2 2020 with shipments of 2.1 million units

International Data Corporation (IDC) has released new data which reveals that India’s traditional PC market, which includes desktops, notebooks, and workstations, has declined by 37.3 percent Year-over-Year (YoY) in Q2 2020.

The report shows that desktop PCs were the most affected product category which registered a 46.4% decline. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the following country-wide lockdown in India, there was a rise in demand for notebooks because businesses started adopting work from home model.

This led to an all-time high of enterprise notebook purchases with shipments growing by 105.5 percent YoY in the second quarter of this year. SMBs also increased their procurement of notebooks with relatively moderate growth of 12.1 percent YoY in 2Q20.

The decline in the overall market share seems like an unfavorable YoY comparison against Q2 2019 given that Lenovo executed a mega-deal of shipping 1.1 million units to Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT).

If we exclude that deal, then the PC market in India saw an annual decline of 6.3 percent in Q2 2020 while the notebooks grew 17.6 percent during the same time. The report adds that the overall consumer segment saw a YoY decline of 21 percent in 2Q20.

As for the companies, HP took the pole position with a 32.8 percent market share, having shipped 692,000 units in Q2 2020. The second and third positions have been grabbed by Lenovo and Dell with 27.5 percent and 17.8 percent market share and 580,000 and 377,000 units shipments respectively.

Acer Group is ranked fourth with 9.9 percent market share and 209,000 units shipments while ASUS stands fifth with shipments of 107,000 units and 5.1 percent market share. It’s noteworthy that ASUS is the only brand that registered 55.5 percent growth compared to Q2 2019 while all the other four brands saw a decline in market share.

Chinese Smartphone Shipments to decline by 30% in Q1 2020 due to Coronavirus: Strategy Analytics

The 2019-nCoV aka Chinese coronavirus outbreak has severely affected the business of Chinese companies as well as those abroad. 361 people have died so far and over 17,000 people have been infected in China. While the Chinese government is actively trying to combat the spread of the virus in the country, stores, restaurants, and other businesses are either closed or operating in limited capacity over the past few days. Unsurprisingly this will affect the smartphone shipments in the first couple of quarters of 2020. And according to a recent report from Strategy Analytics, the Chinese smartphone shipments in Q1 2020 could decline by a staggering 30%.

The Strategy Analytics report points out that the coronavirus will slow down the GDP growth and consumer spending in China. This, in turn, will affect the smartphone market in the country in the first half of 2020. The report highlights that global smartphone shipments will likely drop by 2% due to the coronavirus epidemic. The Chinese smartphone shipments in 2020 are expected to drop by 5%. However, the biggest impact will be in the first quarter where the shipments are expected to drop by 30%.

The report further notes that China manufactures nearly 70% of the world’s smartphones. Therefore, delay in the factory operations due to the extended New Year holidays and travel restrictions and quarantine will adversely affect the global supply and manufacturing. We are already seeing the first signs of a supply shortage due to this epidemic – Asus ROG 2 is in short supply in India right now.

The report further adds that the impact of coronavirus on smartphone shipments in China could be worse if it’s not controlled in the next couple of months.

Xiaomi Mi 10 is said to launch via an online event

The coronavirus epidemic in China has also affected smartphone launch events. We still haven’t heard anything about the Xiaomi Mi 10 launch, which was earlier expected before February 11 in China. In fact, new reports claim that the Mi 10 flagship and the new Black Shark gaming smartphone could get an online release in the country. This makes sense given how the Chinese government is discouraging companies from organizing events during this period. Even Huawei postponed its developer conference in China last week from February 11 to March 27. Accessories for the Galaxy S20 lineup are also expected to be delayed.

Analyst claims Huawei shipments will break 260 Million units in 2019

According to Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s latest research report released today, it is expected that Huawei may regain Google’s GMS certification and authorization before the end of July. On top of this, they also claim that Huawei’s mobile phone shipments in 2019 is expected to reach 260 million units.

Ming-Chi Kuo claims that one reason for the increase in Huawei’s mobile phone shipments is that Huawei’s market share in China has gone up exponentially. Another reason is that Huawei’s mid- and low-end models have regained sales in overseas markets. In overseas markets, operators and vendors have resumed selling their devices, and the company has adopted a more aggressive sales strategy.

Although the market is still worried that Huawei won’t actually be able to get back Google’s GMS certification, Ming-Chi Kuo is confident that they’ll be able to regain it by the end of July. Adding on to that, he also believes that even if the company can’t regain GMS certification and authorization, they’ll still manage to hit 230 million shipments in 2019.

Ming-Chi Kuo also said that Huawei’s mobile phone supply chain has recently raised its forecast for shipments in the second half of the year and 2019. We’re not entirely sure it’s possible for Huawei to continue hitting these milestones, but we’re eager to find out. IDC: Huawei inching closer to Samsung with 50% YoY growth in Q1 2019 shipments

The Chinese smartphone and network equipment manufacturer – Huawei is inching closer to Samsung in terms of smartphone market share. In Q1 2019, Huawei managed to rake 19.0% market share just after Samsung’s 23.1%. Apple remained at 3rd place with 11.7% market share witnessing -30.2% decline in YoY basis.

Overall smartphone shipments in Q1 2019 reduced to 310.8 million against 332.7 million units in Q1 2018. Amid the slump in global smartphone shipments, only a couple of manufacturers recorded growth – Huawei reported 50.3% growth, whereas Vivo summarised 24% growth on YoY basis. On the other hand, Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and OPPO shipped -8.1%, -30.2%, -10.2% and -6% fewer smartphones respectively in comparison with the Q1 2018.

Amid the excellent reception of Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus, Samsung reported decent profits as it struggled in mid-range and low-end product portfolios. Samsung is now eying profits from the Galaxy S10 5G, Galaxy A80 and Galaxy Fold in Q2 2019. Apple’s share reduced from 15.7% to 11.7% due to shifting focus on services. The Cupertino giant’s cloudy 5G strategy is also impacting the market share, as competitors like Huawei and Samsung already announced their own 5G smartphones.

Continuous improvements and innovations led to Huawei’s ascent in the past few months. Huawei P30 and P30 Pro’s huge demand derived the growth in the high-end market. Whereas its domestic adaptability in China further scaled sales leading to 7.0 points increase in the previous quarter. In-house equipment is also leading to increased sales due to affordable and optimized devices.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that Huawei is laser focused on growing its stature in the world of mobile devices, with smartphones being its lead horse,” IDC program vice president Ryan Reith said in a statement. “The overall smartphone market continues to be challenged in almost all areas, yet Huawei was able to grow shipments by 50%, not only signifying a clear number two in terms of market share but also closing the gap on the market leader Samsung. This new ranking of Samsung, Huawei, and Apple is very likely what we’ll see when 2019 is all said and done.”

Another Chinese smartphone maker – Xiaomi profits also reduced by 0.4 points to 8.0% of the overall share. Meanwhile, Vivo improved by 1.9% in its home market and claiming 7.5% overall market share.

Xiaomi’s Shipments Increase In Q2 2016, Thanks To Lei Jun

One of the biggest problems with Xiaomi was not product quality or even specifications, rather it was the unavailability of its devices in the market. The company used to unveil great smartphones but once launched, the phone was hard to get, since the stock never seemed to be enough. As a result, the company has been severely criticized for its ready stock availability and we have seen competitors like OPPO and Vivo beating Xiaomi in terms of the shipments sold during the first quarter of 2016.

This was indeed a worrisome issue for the company as well as fans, which is why Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi took it personally upon himself to head the supply department of the company. Looks like, that was a brilliant move, since Xiaomi is now said to be doing quite well in terms of smartphone shipments.

Earlier today, the secretary of the Chinese smartphone alliance revealed on Weibo that Xiaomi’s shipments have improved. In fact, the company seems to be shipping around 6 million smartphones every month in the second quarter of 2016. This is finally great news considering that fans can purchase Xiaomi’s smartphones right after its announcement. Well, at least the Redmi 3S was up for purchase after its announcement, and to be honest, it sold pretty well during JD.com’s grand sale. Even Xiaomi Mi5 is now available for open purchase.

Given that Xiaomi has finally managed to stabilize its shipments, we can expect the upcoming beasts — Xiaomi Mi5S and the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 to be in stock after the announcement. I don’t think Xiaomi can afford to make the same mistake as it did with the Mi5 earlier this year, which did hurt the company in terms of sales. So, when these two powerful flagships are announced sometime later in 2016, we can hope that the company readies a very good amount of stock to satisfy the demand from its fans.
