Huawei and Xiaomi smartphones were big hits in China during its holiday sales period, surpassing Apple’s iPhones in the market. China’s Singles Day sale which is celebrated on November 11 brings great deals, and it seems that local brands hit saw the most success.

Huawei and Xiaomi register outperform Apple in China

According to a Counterpoint Research report, the Chinese tech giants managed to surpass the Cupertino based company and its latest iPhone 15 lineup in sales. Smartphones from domestic brands saw higher sales in the 11.11 shopping period. The report noted that in the two weeks starting from October 30 to November 12, iPhone sales fell by 4 percent.

On the other hand, Huawei’s Singles’ Day sales rose by a sizeable 66 percent year on year. Its latest flagship 5G series (the Mate 60 lineup) led this notable jump in sales. Similarly, Xiaomi also recorded a notable 28 percent bump during this same period. Interestingly, the two domestic companies’s jump in sales also boosted the local market’s smartphone sales overall by 5 percent year on year during the Singles’ Day sales period.

To compare pricing, the Huawei Mate 60 series has a starting price tag of 5,499 Yuan (roughly 775 US Dollars), while the Xiaomi 14 lineup starts from 3,999 Yuan (roughly 563 US Dollars). Meanwhile, the Apple iPhone 15 is sold for 5,999 Yuan (roughly 845 US Dollars). Xiaomi even shared its sales figures during the shopping festival, which brought in over 22 billion Yuan or roughly 3 billion US Dollars.

Huawei‘s sub-brand Honor has announced that the brand was the top Singles Day performer in terms of sales volume and revenue under the Smartphone category on two of China’s biggest e-commerce platforms — Tmall.com and JD.com.

The company further said that this is the third consecutive year of Honor’s sales supremacy during the Singles Day sales. The company also surpassed Apple in sales in both stores. The company’s latest premium device, Honor Magic 2, was the best selling smartphone in the 4000 to 5000 Yuan category, roughly price range of $580 to $720.

Commenting on this, George Zhao, President of Honor, said:

I’m thrilled that Honor achieved these unbeatable results even under what has become a tough situation for the global smartphone industry. Global smartphone shipments in Q3 2018 represented a 6% YoY decline, the Chinese smartphone market is also declining and was down 11% in the first half of 2018. Our strategy and undiminished efforts in R&D have ensured Honor bucked this global trend, especially in key areas of smartphone technology innovation such as AI, GPU Turbo, and our excellence in smartphone design.

The Singles Day sale also helped extend Honor’s growing influence into Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, Honor became a best seller in Mobile Category and Electronics Category at shopee.com, selling over 8,000 units within 80 minutes.

In India, the company revealed that during the Diwali sales, Honor recorded 300 percent year-on-year growth and sold over a million smartphones. It also said that the company’s fanbase increased by 32 percent.

Meanwhile, the company is also set to launch its new smartphone, dubbed Honor 10 Lite at an event in Beijing on 21st November. At the event, Honor is expected to launch the Honor 10 Lite Supreme Edition as well.

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has set a new sales record for its annual Singles Day sale, posting a sales figure of over $30.8 billion, up 27 percent compared to last year. This year’s Singles Day sale has been by far the largest-ever to date. Just 15 hours and 49 minutes into the spending spree, transactions on the platform leapfrogged that of 2017’s tally of $25 billion.

The Singles Day sale, which is also called “Double 11”, is the world’s biggest online sales event which also outstrips the sales of U.S. shopping holidays Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. It was originally a novelty student holiday to celebrate being single, countering Valentines Day but has since grown into a 24-hour online retail frenzy on November 11.

However, this 27 percent growth also marked the company’s lowest annual increase in the history of Singles Day sale. The slowdown came on the heels of Alibaba’s weakest revenue growth since seven quarters ago and a cut in annual revenue forecast. However, the company’s revenues are still increasing at a healthy rate of 54 percent year-over-year.

Alibaba has also faced new challenges this year, such as new rivals in the market, a slowing economy and its stock dropping 16% thanks to China’s trade war with the US.

Some 180,000 brands are available in the shopping blitz, which includes top technology companies such as Xaomi, Apple, and Dyson, among others. Apart from China, the company has also expanded the event to the Western market, with downloads of its app AliExpress surging in the US and UK.

Alibaba has also tapped into physical stores and is poised to “digitize the whole consumer retail market.” Since the last two years, the company has been jostling with close rival JD.com to snap up strategic partnerships with brick-and-mortar retailers to reach more consumers.

The company also has its sights set on international consumers. This year, merchants from over 200 countries participated in Singles’ Day, including those on Alibaba’s Southeast Asia-based Lazada platform.

This Singles Day sale is expected to be the company’s final November sale with founder and chairman Jack Ma at the helm as Daniel Zhang will take over as chairman next year.

The Xiaomi Mi4 was launched back in July and has always been the biggest-selling Chinese Smartphone until Meizu MX4 came to the market. To compete with the Meizu MX4 the company has announced a new product and its price, which are considerably cheaper than before.

The new Xiaomi Mi4 is the low-cost edition of the Xiaomi Mi4. The difference between this low-end version and the original is that the low-cost edition has 2GB RAM while the original has 3GB RAM.

Besides the low-cost edition, Xiaomi is getting reader for their huge  sale at 11th November by lowering the prices of their products in Chinese electronic shopping website, Tmall. These products are the Mi4, Red Mi 1S, Red Mi Note 4G Enhanced Version, Mi TV 2, Mi Pad, Mi Mobile Battery, Mi Box, Mi Router, and Mi Band.

It is interesting to note that in Xiaomi’s promotion page, the Mi 4 is tagged with “1?99 RMB,” implying that we may see a decrease in the Mi 4’s cost from 1799 RMB (293.75 USD). Merry Christmas to us indeed! Just how much Xiaomi will lower it, we do not know. We will just have to wait.
