<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-396214 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-under-panel-camera-770x738.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="770" height="738" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-under-panel-camera-770x738.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-under-panel-camera-770x738-300x288.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-under-panel-camera-770x738-768x736.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-under-panel-camera-770x738-696x667.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-under-panel-camera-770x738-438x420.jpg 438w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/samsung-oprolbare-telefoon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>LetsGoDigital</em> </a>report, the South Korean tech giant filed for the patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) back in November 2020. This application was granted earlier this month and showcases a sliding smartphone that has an extending display. In its compact form, the supposed Galaxy Z Roll resembles a conventional smartphone with an under display camera on the front and a triple camera on the rear.</p>
<p>Although, the device also sports a motorized mechanism under the hood that allows it to slide out and extend the display from one side. While the sliding display is undoubtedly its most highlighting feature, the smartphone also sports a heart rate monitor on the rear camera module as well. Meanwhile, the front also houses an in display fingerprint scanner, while the front display also houses an illuminance sensor and proximity sensor underneath the screen.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-396215 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/samsung-oprolbare-telefoon.gif?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="1440" height="937" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately, it is unknown if Samsung is actually working on such a smartphone or is just covering all bases. But looking at the degree of details in the patent, this might be one of the prototype designs of what could be the Galaxy Z Roll. However, this is just speculation so take this with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates regarding this device.</p>

<p>Traditional slider phones generally have two bodies that are joined together, with one sliding up to reveal a camera or another mechanism. However, in this case, the Chinese tech giant has built a sliding device with just a single body but built the sliding mechanism into the flexible display itself. Looking at the image provided, the display of the patented smartphone covers the front and only 3/4th of the rear portion that wraps around the device from the bottom. This was first reported by <a href="https://windowsunited.de/exklusiv-xiaomi-experimentiert-mit-flexiblen-displays/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>WindowsUnited</em></a>, with the patent being found in the <em><a href="https://www.incopat.com/detail/init2?formerQuery=56ZjfrAzRVy%2BDw98UIUz2Wr4kAd0KKkg&amp;local=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">incoPat Global Patent Database</a>.</em></p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/21/oppo-reno4-se-5g-with-6-43-inch-display-32mp-selfie-camera-48mp-triple-cameras-and-65w-charging-unveiled/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OPPO Reno4 SE 5G with 6.43-inch display, 32MP selfie camera, 48MP triple cameras and 65W charging unveiled</a></strong></h6>
<p>Thus, when the flexible display slides downward to unveil the front facing cameras and other sensors, the display on the back also rises upward. To put things simply, the display is the only portion that moves due to a sliding mechanism, which is possible due to the screen itself being flexible and covers both the front and back portions. This makes it stand out from any other slider phones that are available in the market at the moment.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-343398 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/p1JBQaYeu8LMmvLdIn4lXQ3D3D.gif?x10805" alt="Xiaomi" width="588" height="604" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately, finer details regarding this very unique device are currently unknown. It is also unclear whether Xiaomi is actually working on such a device or if it is just covering all bases. However, this is a never before seen use of a flexible display and sliding mechanism, which shows that innovation is still what drives the company.</p>

The patent was filed with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and was discovered in WIPO&#8217;s global design database. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-317090" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="770" height="401" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-300x156.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-768x400.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-696x362.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /></a></p>
<p>The sketches which have been rendered by LetsGoDigital shows the phone will adopt a foldable panel just like the Mate X and Mate Xs. However, instead of an in-folding design, the new patented model has a pull-out display design.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/17/xiaomi-aqara-smart-home-products-amazon-us-pricing-availability">Xiaomi’s Aqara officially unveils its range of smart home products in the US</a></strong></h6>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-2.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-317091" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-2.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="770" height="390" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-2.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-2-300x152.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-2-768x389.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-2-696x353.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /></a></p>
<p>Huawei exhibited two different design styles which are described and illustrated by several images. The first model (Model A) has a significantly smaller pull-out display than the Model B. It features a bezel-less design and the flexible screen can be extended from the right side to the rear with a simple swipe of the finger. There is a vertical trim at the back which houses a triple camera setup. There is no indication of a front camera. You may have to just turn the phone over to take self-portraits with the main camera. The extension increases the display area by 30% on the model A.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-3.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-317092" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-3.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei patent" width="770" height="374" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-3.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-3-300x146.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-3-768x373.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/huawei-extendable-smartphone-3-696x338.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /></a></p>
<p>For the second model, Huawei implements a different type of sliding system. This change sees the triple camera setup located on the left rear side instead of the right side. The flexible display also extends from the left. The extended part will be a lot thinner on the right side considering that the left side houses the rear sensors. With this design, the display area may be increased up to 50% on the second design. However, in terms of practicality, the first design looks better.</p>
<p>We must point out that this isn&#8217;t the first of such extendable design that has been patented. Samsung, LG, Xiaomi and even TCL have at different times filed patents for retractable phone design. TCL even showcased a prototype of the first extendable smartphone in the world. Just like foldable design, smartphones with sliding flexible displays may meet with us in the next few years.</p>

Nowadays, it is much more common for most smartphones in any category, ranging from budget to premium flagship, to arrive with bezels, chins, and notches, which are a lot less apparent than what was previously the norm. However, this, in turn, has also led to the development of supplementing technologies like mechanised pop up cameras and in display fingerprint readers. Now, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oppo</a> is seemingly taking the new developments to another level with 6 next designs of sliding smartphones.</p>
<figure id="attachment_307433" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-307433" style="width: 1060px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-307433 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-05.png.png?x10805" alt="" width="1060" height="843" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-05.png.png 1060w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-05.png-300x239.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-05.png-768x611.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-05.png-1024x814.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-05.png-696x554.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-05.png-528x420.png 528w" sizes="(max-width: 1060px) 100vw, 1060px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-307433" class="wp-caption-text">(Images Via PriceBaba)</figcaption></figure>
<p>In the patent, multiple images can be found that detail the schematics of 6 different smartphones with a unique sliding mechanism. The design isn&#8217;t completely out of this world and new, and seems more like an extension of what we originally saw with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-find-x/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oppo Find X</a>. In other words, unlike the prominent curve on the top portion of the smartphones, various different patterns are found in place of it.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-307432 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-04.png.png?x10805" alt="Oppo" width="1060" height="843" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-04.png.png 1060w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-04.png-300x239.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-04.png-768x611.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-04.png-1024x814.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-04.png-696x554.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-04.png-528x420.png 528w" sizes="(max-width: 1060px) 100vw, 1060px" /></p>
<p>Examples of this include a zigzag pattern, a triangular pattern, a semi circle curve, a wavy structure and even a slanted straight line that highlights the portion that slides out. What unique functions these distinct designs hold are unknown and maybe more aesthetical in nature than in function. Meaning, it could possibly just be a variation of the Find X and not serve any purpose in and of themselves.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-307431 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-09.png.png?x10805" alt="Oppo" width="1060" height="769" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-09.png.png 1060w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-09.png-300x218.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-09.png-768x557.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-09.png-1024x743.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-09.png-324x235.png 324w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-09.png-696x505.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-09.png-579x420.png 579w" sizes="(max-width: 1060px) 100vw, 1060px" /></p>

<p>Notably, the patented designs each sport a dual camera setup with a third cutout for the LED flash. On the front, an additional four more cutouts, which is likely for crucial sensors and another dual camera setup for selfies. One particular smartphone that stood out in the Oppo patent revealed a very interesting design. Its pop up mechanism for the dual camera module for both the front and rear slid out from the side rather than the upper regions.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-307430 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-01.png.png?x10805" alt="Oppo" width="1060" height="517" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-01.png.png 1060w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-01.png-300x146.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-01.png-768x375.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-01.png-1024x499.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-01.png-533x261.png 533w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-01.png-696x339.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/OPPO-Patent-Pricebaba-01.png-861x420.png 861w" sizes="(max-width: 1060px) 100vw, 1060px" /></p>
<p>Apart from this, the only other discernable elements are the USB Type C charging port flanked by two speaker grills on the bottom of the device. Unfortunately, finer details and more information regarding these patents are currently unknown. The smartphones in the Oppo patent might just be an attempt to cover every base by the company rather than being actually seeing official development, meaning they might not ever be launched.</p>

One design style that have often been in patent filings is the foldable display design. While we are yet to get a Samsung foldable smartphone, the phone maker has filed patent for a smartphone with a sliding display.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Samsung-Patent-Sliding-Display-Phone-19-400x552.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-170822" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Samsung-Patent-Sliding-Display-Phone-19-400x552.png?x10805" alt="" width="400" height="552" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Samsung-Patent-Sliding-Display-Phone-19-400x552.png 400w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Samsung-Patent-Sliding-Display-Phone-19-400x552-217x300.png 217w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></a></p>
<p>The closest we have to seeing a foldable smartphone from Samsung is the W2018 flip phone which was launched exclusively for China late last year. This isn&#8217;t the sort of slider used on the Nokia 6700 Slide or Motorola sliders or Motorola sliders of yore since there isn&#8217;t going to be a physical keyboard under the first display. From the sketches attached to the patent document, we can gather that the Samsung envisions a touchscreen smartphone that would feature a secondary display but in this case, the secondary screen slides on top the initial display.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Samsung-Patent-Sliding-Display-Phone-20-400x508.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-170823" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Samsung-Patent-Sliding-Display-Phone-20-400x508.png?x10805" alt="" width="400" height="508" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Samsung-Patent-Sliding-Display-Phone-20-400x508.png 400w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Samsung-Patent-Sliding-Display-Phone-20-400x508-236x300.png 236w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong>Read More: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/01/29/samsung-galaxy-s9-galaxy-s9-renders-leaked-dbrand/">Samsung Galaxy S9 &amp; Galaxy S9+ Renders Leaked By DBrand</a></strong></p>
<p>We can&#8217;t say why Samsung would think up such design which doesn&#8217;t look to appealing. But then, it is possible that the smartphone maker is trying to come up with a touchscreen model that would allow users extend the display in order to have a wider screen without having to flip the phone into landscape viewing mode. This just a patent anyway, and might find its way into a commercial smartphone anytime soon.</p>
