Unboxing

Inside the box, we have the Instructions, a charging cable with a magnetic pin and USB-A port at the other end. Now this is the smart band itself, the texture of ceramic is really different from other materials, it is an effect that ordinary metal or glass cannot have. The whole body is made of this bright white color, it looks very good and you can sense the weight of it when you have it on your wrist. This could be the best material and design among all Xiaomi Smart bands.

However, the back is plastic, but it has some kind of frosted texture. The strap is made of rubber, l believe the regular version is TPU. The rubber strap has a better texture and is softer than TPU, if your skin is sensitive, this ceramic version is the way to go. One thing that is even better is that the buckle on the strap is also ceramic, it matches the body very well. So ten out of ten, what score would you give to this one?  

Next, let’s check on the weight. The Xiaomi smart band 9 weighs about 22.7 grams without the straps, it is indeed much heavier than the previous gen, that one was 14.3 grams. This is because ceramic is indeed heavier, and also the battery is bigger, more on that later.

Comparison

Next, let’s compare Xiaomi Smart Band 9 to the previous gen.

The most obvious thing is the upgrade in materials. The Xiaomi Smart Band 8 had a plastic frame, but it was painted with a metallic texture, it may not be as good as real metal. The regular Xiaomi Smart Band 9 has an aluminum alloy frame, and this one in our hand is ceramic. The overall texture is a big leap compared to the previous one. Moreover, the regular version has four colors, silver, black, blue, and pink gold, all made of aluminum alloy.

In addition to the material, the appearance of these two generations is actually very similar. The straps and charging pod are the same. Even the size and shape of the screens of the two are the same, both are 1.62-inch AMOLED “runway” screens. The 9 is actually one millimeter shorter than the 8, but the bezel at the bottom is still wider than the one on the top, so it is still not symmetrical. The refresh rate is still 60Hz, which is relatively smooth to use. The brightness of this screen is 1200nit, literally doubled compared to the previous gen. Everything on the screen will be clearer under the sun. 

The upgrades are also in the settings.

– For example, the Smart Band 9 has enabled the device to always turn on the screen upon raising your wrist throughout the day, it was not available on last gen.

– Then the auto brightness option is actually different. In this generation, if you turn on the automatic brightness, you cannot adjust the brightness anymore. You need to change the setting first.

– Now the battery has also increased. This time it is 233mAh, while the previous gen was 190 mAh. So the battery life has been significantly improved. The estimated battery life is about 21 days, if AOD is turned on or with intense use, it can last for about 9 days, much longer than last gen.

– The other important upgrade is the motor. It has changed from a very cheap rotor motor to a linear motor. Although it is only a Z-Axis linear motor, the vibration effect is indeed much better than the previous one. Although in this review you can not feel it ,but we tested it, the vibration is obviously very intuitive and crisp. This kind of performance has actually exceeded many smartwatches.  

– Next, let’s take a look at the back. Other than the layouts being different, the actual performance has also been upgraded due to these two infrared sensors at the top and bottom. Basically, the heart rate sensor is still located in the middle, but the red and green lights used for those purposes are separated. This layout actually improves the accuracy according to Xiaomi, it claims that the overall performance has increased by 16%.

System Upgrades

Let’s check out the upgrades of the system and software. This time the Smart Band 9 also uses the HyperOS. To support that, the processor has also been upgraded, from the previous Apollo 4 BlueLight to BES2700IMP. So these two major upgrades has improved the overall smoothness.

-For example, when we go back in the app, there is an animation, I believe there isn’t any of this on the 8. This seems to be a small upgrades, but it is still an improvement that you would definitely love.

-At the same time, the overall font size is a bit larger than that of 8, makes it a bit easier to read the info on the screen. Also, some of the UI have been redesigned, a bit better looking than before.

-The Mijia App is available on it also, you can add some prompts here, such as turn off all the lights in the bedroom.

-It also support operating with wet hand.

-In addition, you can customize the widgets on the watch face this time, you can change the colors and info you want in the watch face here. This feature was not available on the 8.

-This time, Xiaomi Smart Band 9 supports App store, you can download some games or some small apps. So it feels like this device is a big step closer to a real smart watch.

Special Feature

Here comes a surprise, the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 potentially will support certain functions of Nintendo Switch. You can use this Xiaomi Smart Band as a motion recognizer, then you no longer need to use the handles. However, this function has not yet been available, and we are not sure if it will support the global version. So we need to wait a while for it.

Huawei is all set to launch its latest smart wristband, the Huawei Band 8, on Monday. The company has shared a promotional poster of the Band 8, revealing several details that showcase the wearable’s updated look and feel.

The Huawei Band 8 comes with a redesigned frame that is flat from all sides and made of ceramic, giving it a sleek, modern look. Additionally, the new wristband is available in three colors – Green, Sakura Pink, and Dark Black, with matching straps that feature intricate carving designs.

The rectangular screen of the Huawei Band 8 is taller than the previous model, with a bright display that adds to the device’s stylish look. The Huawei Band 8 is also expected to offer improved functionality, building on the success of its predecessor, the Huawei Band 7.

The Band 7 came with a 1.47-inch HD AMOLED touch display, 5ATM water resistance, Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, and an array of sensors for heart rate, sleep, stress, and menstrual cycle tracking.

Moreover, the Huawei Band 7 offered an impressive 96 workout modes, including 11 professional modes and 85 customized options. It also featured music and camera controls, quick message replies, and incoming call alerts. The device weighed just 16g and offered up to 14 days of battery life with typical usage.

While the Huawei Band 8’s specs and features have yet to be officially announced, it’s clear from the promotional material that the device will offer significant upgrades and improvements over its predecessor. Xiaomi has released a firmware update for its Smart Band 7 Pro, version 1.4.70, bringing several improvements to the device’s features and user experience.

Among the new functions added to the Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro are the “Calendar” feature, allowing users to quickly access their schedules and appointments from the band, and the “Turn off watchface Editing” option, which prevents accidental changes to the watch face. The update also includes the “Find your band” feature, enabling users to locate their device through their smartphone and trigger the band’s vibration.

Additionally, the firmware update introduces the “Stat goal switch” function, giving users more control over the stat goal push notifications they receive. The update also optimizes the accuracy of the device’s sleep, calorie, and exercise algorithms, along with improving the overall dial-related experience and fixing other experience-related problems.

The update also adds message notification display icons for more applications and optimizes the weather cache strategy to improve the device’s performance.

However, the “Stat reminder” function has been removed from the update. Xiaomi notes that the 3rd and 4th optimizations require the simultaneous upgrade of the App, which will be released soon.

The Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro features a 1.64-inch HD 2.5D AMOLED touch display with a resolution of 280×456 pixels, 326 PPI, and up to 500 nits of brightness. It is compatible with Android 6.0 and above and iOS 12.0 and above, and supports Bluetooth 5.2 and GNSS systems that include BeiDou, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS.

Other features of the Smart Band 7 Pro include 5ATM water resistance, optical heart rate, and blood oxygen sensors, a six-axis motion sensor, 110+ workout modes, continuous heart rate tracking, continuous blood oxygen saturation monitoring, 24/7 sleep tracking, female health tracking, and smart controls such as music and remote camera control, quick message reply, and incoming call alerts.

The band also has 150+ new band faces with AOD support, a microphone for hands-free Alexa, and a 235mAh battery that offers up to 12 days of battery life with typical usage and charging time of about one hour. It weighs just 20.5g (weight without wrist strap) and has an adjustable length of wrist strap of 130-205mm.

The Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro firmware update version 1.4.70 is available now, and users are advised to update their device and the associated app when prompted.

It is definitely one of the most awaited wearables of 2020 since it belongs to the best-selling smart band series of all times. If leaks are to be believed, Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will have a very futuristic design. According to a leaked image, it will sport a full borderless display with very narrow bezels. It will be like punch-hole displays found in the most modern smartphones, but instead of the front camera, the display will house a single button. The design you can see above would make the Xiaomi Mi Band 5 the first full borderless smart band ever released. The shape of the wearable is similar to the one of its predecessor Mi Band 4. But the photo above was not confirmed officially and earlier speculations suggested that the Mi Band 5 will have the same design as the Mi Band 4.

UPDATE: The company has so far confirmed that the fitness tracker will come in four color options: Black, Green, Yellow, and Red. The color variants have been revealed in an official poster confirming the design. The display will have narrower bezels than Mi Band 4.

Display

The display of the Xiaomi Mi Band 5 is said to be an OLED panel with a diagonal of 1.2 inches: bigger if compared to the Mi Band 4 which has a 0.95-inch display. In the above leaked unofficial image, you can clearly see a color display showing time, date, and remaining battery charge, as well as a central button that will be used to control the user interface. The display will support a lot of new watch faces. The display will be reportedly brighter and display more contrast.

UPDATE: Xiaomi officially confirmed that the Mi Band 5 will come with a 20 percent larger display, which is in line with the reports claiming that the Mi Band 5 will have a 1.2-inch screen, slightly larger than the 0.95-inch display in the predecessor. A leaked image revealed that there will be an Avengers watch face available in the software.

Specs & Software

The Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will have a lot of interesting features compared to other smart bands. It is supposed to come with NFC support and according to rumors, outside of China, it might support even Google Pay, unlike its predecessor. According to a leak, Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will support various activity tracking modes including running, cycling, skipping, swimming, and more. Certain new modes will include yoga and indoor cycling, for a total of 11 different activity tracking modes.

A unique feature will be the support to Amazon Alexa smart voice assistant for those who use it outside of China, which will make the Xiaomi Mi Band 5 an IoT device. The wearable will reportedly support camera controls, which is likely in the form of taking images, videos, and more. Further, the Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will include an accurate heart rate sensor and a SpO2 sensor to monitor the blood oxygen level. It will have additional features like menstrual cycle tracking and PAI, which stands for Personal Activity Intelligence (the same you can find on Amazfit wearables by Huami).

UPDATE: according to the latest rumors, Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will support Google Pay transactions in its global variants, thanks to the NFC connectivity. Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will launch with 7 major upgrades, including professional sensors. It is speculated to arrive with an enhanced SpO2 sensor, a dedicated sensor for measuring stress and breathing activity of the user, and 11 professional sports modes. While the global version will support Amazon Alexa, the Chinese edition will have the Xiao AI voice assistant on board. There will also be a women’s health mode and a remote control feature. Battery

Unfortunately, there is no info about the battery life and the battery capacity of the Xiaomi Mi Band 5. But we do not believe that the battery life of the new wearable will be different from the one of its predecessor. The Mi Band 4 offers up to 20 days of battery life on a single charge, depending on the usage. There are several optional modes and settings (such as lift-to-view and continuous heart-rate monitoring) that make the battery life shorter.

UPDATE: a teaser surfaced online just confirmed that Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will come with new magnetic charging technology. To charge previous smart bands from the Mi Band series, it was mandatory to remove the device from the strap. Thanks to the new technology, it is not anymore: this time the company is using a magnetic charging pin placed on the back on the device on which the user can stick the charger without removing the band from the strap. The magnetic charging pin is placed near the heart rate sensor. Thanks to this technology, putting the smart band on charge will become a lot quicker and more comfortable.

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 Launch, Price and Availability

According to an official teaser posted by the company, Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will be officially launched in the Chinese market on June 11. The launch event will be taking place as a part of the company’s product lineup set for the upcoming 618 sale event in China. Xiaomi Mi Band 5 is said to carry a price tag of 179 Yuan in China, which roughly translates into 26 US dollars.

Honor had an official event in China earlier today where it announced the new Honor 9X series. Alongside the new models, the company also unveiled its brand new wearable, the Honor Band 5, which directly takes on Xiaomi’s Mi Band 4. While the new Honor band goes neck to neck with the Mi Band 4 in terms of features, it has an edge thanks to its blood oxygen level sensor.

The Honor Band 5 comes with a 0.95-inch AMOLED color display with 282 PPI and 2.5D glass on top. The band features a number of new dials to match the different needs of the user. What’s really the highlight of the new smart band is the blood oxygen level sensor. It can measure your blood SpO2 levels, indicating the level of oxygen in your blood. This is a game-changing feature for a smart band that costs less than $30, clearly giving it an edge over Xiaomi’s Mi Band 4.

Other features are standard, including a 24 x 7 heart rate monitoring sensor, sleep monitor with the ability to detect six different types of sleeping problems, and 10 different sports modes that include indoor and outdoor running, cycling, swimming, and a few other cardio activities. Just like the Mi Band 4, the Honor band is waterproof up to 50 meters, so you can wear the wearable while swimming to track your calories.

The ring is teased as being able to teleport someone from a disaster or unsafe zone to safety. Now, teleportation is a stuff of science fictions and just isn’t possible presently. This might just be some prank as what is likely coming is a smart fitness band that should perform like the Mi Band 2 and even better.

Meizu was rumored to be working on a new smartband and the company has just unveiled this brand new device alongside the Meizu M5 Note today. The device comes with all the features that you would expect in a fitness smartband and like tradition, Meizu has priced the band aggressively at just 229 Yuan ($31).

So, what do you get at this price?

The Meizu band comes with an integrated OLED touchscreen display. Many smartbands today have a non-integrated body, which means you can remove it from the strap. However, Meizu is using a different approach here by using an integrated design with double component injection technology. This is probably why the Meizu band looks curvier and I am sure many will like this design. It definitely looks more stylish than some other offerings at this price. Charging the Meizu Band is also an easy process since it comes with a magnetic USB charging cable that sticks to the device. You get more than 7 days of usage on a single charge w/ heart rate sensor and around 15 days without using the sensor.

As for the features, the Meizu Band is IP67 certified which means you don’t have to worry about water splashes or dust. The OLED screen reveals all the important data like the time, number of steps taken, calories burned as well as the heart rate. The heart rate sensor is from AMS and it even notifies you if your rate exceeds a set maximum rate. The band will also monitor your sleep patterns and features a built-in snooze alarm which wakes you up softly.

The Meizu Band connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and can alert you about the incoming phone calls and messages. Further, you can use its Find My Phone feature that alerts you when the distance between your smartphone and the band exceeds 10 meters.

The Meizu Band is already up for pre-order in China and will be up for grabs on December 8. Note that, as of now, the company has not revealed any plans for an international release.

Meizu already has two devices set to launch in the next couple of days but according to an official, we should expect a third device. The device is a smartband called the Meizu H1 and is expected to launch alongside the Meizu M5 Note on the 6th of December.

Images of the smartband already leaked online shows that it will arrive in a black box with the words ”H1 Smartband” engraved at the top. The band doesn’t have a design that stands out from what we’ve already seen from other manufacturers. It has a display, which is probably OLED and it does the same thing you would expect from a regular smartband like tell the time, count steps, and measure your heart rate. What Meizu says is different about their smartband is the battery life which we are eager to confirm when it launches and we get to review it.

The Meizu H1 also uses contact charging, hence you wouldn’t need cables to charge. The smartband is priced at ¥229 ($33) and the source that leaked the details of the smartband says there is more than sufficient stock available to cater for buyers.
