Samsung, the world’s leading smartphone maker for years, has not been able to sell as many smartphone units as it had planned because of several reasons, including the supply-chain issue caused by COVID-19 and the dull economic outlook in several countries.

As global smartphone shipments have declined, affecting almost all companies, the South Korean giant Samsung isn’t immune. A new report from Taiwan Economic Daily (via ITHome) claims that the company plans on reducing its smartphone shipments next year.

As per the report, Samsung is planning to reduce its smartphone shipments in the year 2023 by 13 percent, which roughly turns out to be 30 million units. This is mainly because of the decline in the smartphone market, because of which the company isn’t able to sell as many smartphones as it had planned, and the market continues to see weaker demand.

While Samsung was able to increase its market share in terms of shipments for the third quarter of this year (Q3 2022) compared to the previous quarter (Q2 2022), the company saw an overall decline of around eight percent when compared year-on-year.

It isn’t just Samsung that is bearish on the market situation. Some smartphone component suppliers, including Japan-based Murata and Taiwan-based Yageo, Tongxin Electic, and Duntai, among others, also share similar sentiments.

Murata, a leader in passive component MLCC (Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors), which provides electronic modules and components for Apple iPhone, Samsung smartphones, and others, has warned that smartphone demand in Greater China will not show signs of recovery and it will continue to see the decline next year.

Tongxin Electric, a mobile phone sensor component supplier, has said that it may need more than two to three quarters to destock. The company estimates that in the second quarter of next year or at the end of the third quarter, the related business of the company will rebound.

However, the highlight of the report is that the Lenovo-owned Motorola has now entered the list of top three smartphone makers in the United States as the company managed to grab the market share of LG.

Motorola’s top three models in Q3 2021 include Moto G Play, Moto G Power, and Moto G Stylus, which is a 5G device. The company wasn’t much affected by the Vietnam factory shutdowns as it manufactures its devices in China.

As noted, with LG exiting the smartphone market, Motorola managed to gain new customers. While it managed to grab the third spot in the US market, with just an 8 percent share, it’s nowhere near the top two leading brands.

Apple remains the leading smartphone brand in the United States with a 42 percent market share, which represents an increase of 9 percent year-on-year. South Korean giant Samsung remains in the second position with a 35 percent market share and the company grew its presence by 18 percent year-on-year.

The report adds that the newly launched iPhone 13 series contributed to 17 percent of Apple’s sales in the third quarter of this year. With the holiday season, the company is expected to strengthen the fourth quarter as well.

On the other hand, Samsung didn’t launch its Galaxy Note-series flagship this time but instead, the brand launched two new foldable smartphones which have exceeded the company’s own goals in terms of sales. On top of that, it also managed to push the Galaxy A32 5G, its most affordable 5G smartphone through carriers.

Xiaomi has become the world’s second-largest smartphone company in the second quarter of this year, overtaking the tech giant Apple. The report from Canalys Research says that the Chinese company saw a massive 83 percent jump in shipments.

This is the first time Xiaomi is breaking into the top two positions globally when it comes to smartphone shipments. For those who are unaware, the top two positions have historically been dominated by Samsung and Apple.

Huawei had briefly grabbed the second position, overthrowing Apple but soon after that, it started facing sanctions by the United States. The company eventually withdrew from the high-end premium phones market and Xiaomi rushed to fill the gap by launching smartphone switch top-of-the-line specifications and aggressive pricing.

According to Canalys Research, Samsung remained the leading smartphone brand globally with a 19 percent share in the second quarter of this year while Xiaomi managed to increase its market share to 17 percent in Q2 2021. Apple comes in third with 14 percent of the market share in terms of smartphone shipments. OPPO and Vivo are positioned fourth and fifth with a 10 percent market share each.

Ben Stanton, Canalys Research Manager says that the average selling price for Xiaomi is around 40% and 75% cheaper when compared to Samsung and Apple respectively. So, the company managed to grow sales for its high-end devices, such as Mi 11 Ultra.

However, it remains to be seen if Xiaomi manages to keep its position from rivals like OPPO and Vivo which also have the same objective — offering high-end smartphones at an affordable price point. Another advantage that Vivo and OPPO have against Xiaomi is that they are spending a lot of capital on marketing efforts.

Canalys report adds that the Mi 11 series maker has managed to increase shipments by more than 300% in Latin America, 150% across Africa, and 50% in Western Europe.

Now, a new report reveals that Apple was the market leader in 5G phones in Japan last year, accounting for almost half of the total shipments. The remaining spots for the top five vendors were filled by Samsung and three other Japanese brands.

Japan recorded a massive 40-fold increase in the 5G shipments in 2020 and is expected to continue the trend this year as well. A report from MM Research Institute, a Japanese ICT market research and consulting organization, claims that the domestic smartphone shipments in Japan increased by 16.9% annually to 32.757 million.

The numbers set a record high shipments as it has exceeded the 32.58 million shipments in the year 2017. This is mainly due to the iPhone 12 series models reaching 11.011 million units, indicating a 40-fold increase (3,993%) from the 269,000 units in 2019.

The company’s share of total shipments also jumped from 1 percent in 2019 to 33.6 percent in 2020. Apple is now leading the Japanese smartphone market, followed by Sharp, Samsung, Fujitsu, and Sony. The US-based tech giant is likely to launch a new Purple-colored iPhone to boost its sales.

As per the report, shipments of Samsung devices are expected to have seen a decline of 30 percent. On the other hand, shipments of Huawei smartphones are said to have just slightly declined. Thus, it seems that the Chinese giant will be overtaking Samsung as the world’s largest smartphone maker in Q2 2020.

Huawei has already led the market in terms of smartphone shipments for the month of April and May and now it will be taking over for the entire quarter. This is impressive given that the company has been banned by the United States and is facing issues in other countries as well.

The Mainland China market seems to be making all the difference when it comes to the market share. While Samsung has less than 1 percent market share in Mainland China, Huawei, on the other hand, has captured more than 60 percent of the market.

EDITOR’S PICK: France isn’t planning to ban Huawei but won’t advise telcos to deploy its 5G gear

In the month of May, which saw 81.97 million shipments, Huawei had a market share of 19.7 percent while Samsung was just behind it with a market share of 19.6 percent. In comparison, back in April, the Chinese brand had a market share of 21.4 percent while Samsung had a 19.1 percent market share.

Although Huawei has managed to overtake Samsung to be the leading smartphone brand, it remains to be seen if the Chinese company can hold onto its position given the pressure it is facing from the western countries. Also, the appeal for Huawei and Honor smartphones could decline because of the lack of support for Google apps and services.

Huawei has been trying to reduce its reliance on third-party and is trying to manufacture devices through local resources. Instead of Google apps and services, it is offering its own Huawei Mobile Services with AppGallery. Recently, the U.S. added another sanction on Huawei, barring it from using American-technology for chipset making, and thus, TSMC has stopped taking new orders from the Chinese giant.

Going by the listing, Huawei is leading the market with 15.36 percent market share while Honor ranks second with 10.45 percent market share.
As of November 2018, the company’s market share in the premium smartphone category (phones priced above $600) has reached a new height of 12 percent. According to the data released by IDC, Huawei currently ranks third among the top smartphone companies in terms of worldwide shipments with around 14.7 percent market share.

Huawei is just behind Apple, which has grabbed the second position with a 14.9 percent market share. South Korea-based Samsung is still dominating the smartphone market with a 20.8 percent market share. Going forward, Huawei is aiming to grab more smartphone market share.

According to the reports, Huawei has internally set a goal of shipping 250 million smartphones this year, i.e. 2019, which comes down to a growth of around 21 percent. Further, it is aiming to ship over 300 million units of its smartphones in 2020.

The IDC report indicates that the smartphone shipments for the two leading companies are declining. While Samsung witnessed a drop of 8 percent in its shipments with 292 million units shipped, Apple’s shipments fell by 3.2 percent with shipments of 208 million units.

This gives an opportunity to Huawei for grabbing a bigger part of the smartphone market share globally and gain a lead to take the place of Apple. Earlier, Huawei had dethroned Apple for the second position but couldn’t hold on to it for longer.

In China, Huawei is leading the market with 26.4 percent market share, having shipped over 105 million units. It is followed by Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Apple with 19.8%, 19.1%, 13.1%, and 9.1% market share respectively.

In a bid to gain more market share, the company has reportedly made some strategic changes in terms of its operations. As per the reports, Huawei has asked its production partners for support of additional capacity and is also planning to move some of its production lines to Mainland China so that it can provide timely support for its products.

While Samsung has been dominating in India in terms of the smartphone market share, Xiaomi recently overtook Samsung to be at the pole position.

However, the recent reports regarding the smartphone market share in India have created confusion. While Counterpoint Research and Canalys ranked Samsung as the leading brand in India in Q2 2018, the IDC report places Xiaomi at the top.

Today, market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has crowned Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi as the leading smartphone brand in India with a market share of 29.7 percent. Samsung stands second with a market share of 23.9 percent while Vivo and Oppo grab the third and fourth position, respectively.

Earlier, Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research suggested that South Korean giant Samsung had reclaimed the top spot in the second quarter of 2018 in India with 29 percent share against Xiaomi’s 28 percent market share.

Canalys, a Singapore-based market research firm revealed that Samsung shipped 9.9 million smartphones in India in the second quarter of 2018, registering almost a 50 percent annual growth rate. The same report said that Xiaomi shipped 9.9 million smartphones — the best quarter it had in the country so far.

Now, according to IDC’s latest Quarterly Smartphone Tracker, approximately one out of three smartphones sold in India in the second quarter was a Xiaomi device. In the online market, it continued to be the number one vendor with 55.6 percent market share, for the seventh consecutive quarter.

Commenting on this development, Manu Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India, said:

Our mission to deliver amazing products at honest pricing has changed people’s lives and started a new chapter in the mobile Internet era in India and I believe we will become an even bigger part of people’s lives.

The IDC report also added that four out of the top five smartphones in Q2 2018 were Xiaomi smartphones – Redmi 5A, Redmi Note 5 Pro, Redmi Note 5, and Redmi 5, which accounted for 26 percent of overall smartphone shipments.

Apart from Xiaomi, Huawei is the other Chinese phone manufacturer that is also climbing the ladder in the Indian market. In the online segment, Huawei registered strong shipments of its Honor-branded phones and grabbed the second spot with an all-time high of 8 percent share in Q2 2018.

According to IDC, the Indian smartphone market saw an overall healthy growth of 20 percent in the second quarter with a total of 33.5 million units being shipped. The strong growth is being attributed to the slew of online-exclusive launches and strong shipments by offline-heavy vendors.

However, the report suggests that Apple will dethrone Samsung from the top spot in the last quarter of this year (Q4 2017).

As per the report, Samsung’s market share will decline from 21.1 percent to 18.2 percent while Apple’s market share will grow from 11.5 percent to 19.1 percent. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth spot will be taken by Chinese manufacturers Huawei, OPPO, Xiaomi and Vivo respectively.

While Huawei is estimated to capture 10.6 percent of the market share, OPPO, Xiaomi and Vivo are estimated to follow with 7.2%, 6.6% and 5.5% of market share. Rest of the companies will cover the remaining 32.8 percent market share.

Huawei’s annual total for 2017 is estimated around 150 million units. The Chinese manufacturer’s smartphone strategy for this year is to focus on selling its high-end, high-margin models and reduce the number of its low-price, entry-level models in the lineup.

In terms of smartphone production, Samsung manufacturer 81 million units in the third quarter. However, in the fourth quarter, the company is expected to scale down production of its high-end smartphones. On the other hand, Apple, which is struggling in terms of production capacity for the iPhone X, is expected to ramp up productions to reach 81 million units in the last quarter of the year, out of which 33 percent units will be iPhone X.

The fourth quarter has usually been the strongest for Apple, given that the US-based company launches new devices in the fall. Samsung‘s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus were released back in April, so sales momentum is likely beginning to decline.

Meanwhile, market research firm Canalys estimates that the iPhone 8 Plus has outpaced the iPhone 8 last quarter with shipments of 6.3 million units and 5.4 million units respectively. As per the report, the iPhone 8 Plus is the first Plus-sized iPhone to out-ship its smaller sibling in a single quarter.

With iPhone X sales going stronger, and the demand for the device is expected to be significant during holiday period. This could help Apple to easily beat its all-time record for revenue in a single quarter of $78.4 billion which was achieved in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Samsung, Apple, and Huawei remain at the top 3 positions. Overall, there were 334.9 million smartphones shipped worldwide in the first quarter of 2016, IDC said.

Samsung‘s smartphone shipments declined 0.6 percent. Galaxy S7 and S7 edge and J-series were the focus areas for Samsung. While Apple’s smartphone volumes slipped to 51.2 million units, down 16.3 percent, a first in 13 years.

Huawei has on the other hand gained from the likes of P9, Mate Series, and Nexus 6, along with entry level devices from its Honor brand. Huawei shipped 27.5 million devices with a growth of over 58 percent!
