It seems that users in the region still favor Android over iOS.

In 2023, various companies introduced 406 phones in China, a 5.5% increase from the previous year, potentially the highest globally. Local Brands Vanish as Global Giants Dominate Smartphone Market

If you asked any of you to name companies competing in the global smartphone market, you’d probably give us a list of 10-20 brands, mostly consisting of major manufacturers. However, the global smartphone market is a much more fierce battlefield than you might think. Today, around 250 manufacturers worldwide are competing for a share of this market. This number was once much higher. Not so long ago, in 2017, there were over 700 brands vying for consumer attention, and within a six year, 65% of them exited the market.

Of course, there are many reasons for this decline, and some aren’t as bad as you might think. First, let’s consider why there were so many manufacturers at one time. The ever-increasing popularity of smartphones and the steadily growing numbers each quarter prompted many local and global companies to try their luck in this market.

I’m sure that no matter which country you read this from, a few manufacturers who normally did something else but at some point released their own Android phone will come to mind. In fact, these local smartphone brands were once hailed as titans in their own regions. However, they have been the main casualties in this market evolution.

Unfortunately, the rise of global brands and their expansion into more markets, coupled with their ability to produce better phones, has made it harder for local producers. Moreover, the sheer size of these global tech giants has allowed them to offer models with a higher price-to-performance ratio.

As a result, local brands which once dominated their markets have seen their market share decline, or have even exited the market entirely. Additionally, these local manufacturers, already lagging in advertising, have fallen further behind due to the absence of celebrity brand ambassadors and significant marketing events.

In the process we discussed, numerous reasons stood in the way of companies’ success, with the final blow coming from the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though there was an increased global demand for technology products and manufacturers struggled to meet this demand, disruptions in the supply chain and other economic issues impacted smaller producers even more.

As a result, 65% of brands that were producing their own smartphones in 2017 have now exited the market. This decline isn’t solely due to a crisis, especially considering there are still over 250 manufacturers. However, to protect consumers, competition shouldn’t be compromised, and the number of brands should not decrease much further.

The Global Smartphone Market sales continue to suffer. The sales dropped 4% Month on Month (MoM) and 10% Year on Year (YoY) in May 2022 according to a report. May was the second consecutive month of MoM decline and the 11th consecutive month of YoY decline in sales. The decline is caused due to various factors but inflation, China’s slowdown, and the Ukraine crisis are said to be the prime culprit.

Global Smartphone shipments dropped to 96 million units in May 2022, according to the latest report by market research firm Counterpoint. This is the first time since the first and second quarters of the pandemic hit 2020 that monthly smartphone sales have been below 100 million.

The continued decline is caused due to various factors including but not limited to inflation, China’s lowdown, and the Ukraine crisis. Inflation is causing consumers to stick to their phones and avoid unnecessary purchases.

“The demand for a smartphone especially in the advanced economies is driven by replacement, which makes it a discretionary purchase. And inflationary pressures are leading to pessimistic consumer sentiment around the globe with people postponing non-essential purchases, including smartphones,” said research director Tarun Pathak. “The strengthening US dollar is also hurting emerging economies. A segment of consumers is likely to wait for seasonal promotions before purchasing to offset some of the cost pressures,” Pathak added.

The smartphone market is also severely affected by the lockdown in China and Ukraine crisis. China’s lockdown has been hurting domestic demand and hampering the global supply chain. The Ukraine war has caused the demand to decline in Eastern Europe, says the report.

According to the Counterpoint macro index, the Global smartphone will likely continue bleeding throughout the summer. However, the market is expected to bounce back during H2, mainly due to an improved situation in China and an improvement in the supply-demand balance in the tech supply chain.

Smartphone market observed multiple records

The global smartphone market grew for the first time in 2021 since 2017. Counterpoint Research revealed that the shipments reached 1.39 billion units by growing 4% YoY.

The Indian smartphone, in particular, grew 12%YoY last year by registering 162 million units in shipment. On the other hand, the Chinese market shipped 333 million units and incremented by only 1%.

Finally, pivoting to the budget segment at the right time (ahead of LG’s demise), OnePlus saw an insane 524% YoY growth in the US in Q4 2021.

iPhone clones from Gionee and Blackview

Gionee 13 Pro went official last week with an uncanny iPhone 13 resemblance and HarmonyOS. However, it has entry-level specs like an HD+ display (LCD) and a UNISOC T310 chipset. For just  ¥529 (483), it doesn’t sound like a bad deal after all.

At around the same time, Blackview A95 also got announced with an iPhone 13 Pro-like design. Its main highlights other than design include a MediaTek Helio P70 SoC, 6.5-inch HD+ display (LCD), and a 4,380mAh battery.

Face ID now works with a mask 

After two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, iPhones can be finally unlocked with masks on. However, this feature is currently only available in the beta channel. Also, it requires iPhone 12 or newer models.

Additionally, Apple is working on a new feature that will turn iPhones into POS machines. This feature will be reportedly useful for micro-merchants.

MediaTek Kompanio 1380 is a new chip for Chromebooks

MediaTek announced a new SoC called Komapnio 1380 for premium Chromebooks on January 26. This 6m chip arrives with an octa-core CPU consisting of four ARM Cortex-A78 cores clocked at up to 3GHz and a five-core ARM Mali-G57 GPU.

It supports up to 4K 60Hz display, AV1 decoding, WiFi 6//6E, and Bluetooth 5. The chipset will make its global debut inside the Acer Chromebook Spin 513, which is scheduled to hit the shelves in June.

HUAWEI P50 Pocket reaches global markets alongside HUAWEI P50 Pro

On January 26, Huawei announced the arrival of HUAWEI P50 Pro and HUAWEI P50 Pocket to multiple international markets like Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa, Europe, and South America.

The 4G-only premium handsets from the once world’s largest smartphone brand sport the same set of features as the variant sold in China, except for software. The global editions of these devices run EMUI 12 without GMS (Google Mobile Services) instead of HarmonyOS.

Despite their shortcomings in terms of software, Huawei is charging a whopping €1,199 for the HUAWEI P50 Pro (8GB + 256GB) and €1,299 for the HUAWEI P50 Pocket (8GB + 256GB). There’s also a Premium Edition of the latter phone with a unique design and 12GB + 512GB memory configuration for €1,599.

JioPhone 5G could be Jio’s first 5G smartphone

A report on January 25 disclosed that the Indian carrier Jio is working on its first 5G smartphone called JioPhone 5G. This device is expected to go official in June with much better specs than the poorly received JioPhone Next.

The handset is said to come with a 6.5-inch HD+ display (HD+), 13MP (wide) + 2MP (macro) dual camera setup, 8MP selfie camera, side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 SoC, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, 5,000mAh battery, and 18W fast charging.

OnePlus phones might run H₂OOS in the near future

On January 27, popular Indian tech influencer Mukul Sharma tweeted that the unified operating system of OPPO and OnePlus could be called H₂OOS. Since his claim is based on a trademark filing by OnePlus, he could be wrong.

Anyway, the H₂OOS (Water OS) trademark is interesting as it combines the names of OxygenOS (O₂) and the discontinued HydrogenOS (H₂OS). The name has no mention of ColorOS, which the software will be actually based on.

Furthermore, a couple of days before this tweet, a tipster stated that the OnePlus 10 Ultra could debut in H2 2022 as the brand’s first superphone or ultra-premium smartphone. The device is said to house OPPO’s MariSilicon NPU.

HONOR to showcase new products at MWC 2022

HONOR has confirmed to attend MWC 2022. The company has scheduled a launch conference for February 28. The event will kickstart at 1 PM CET.

The brand is teasing the launch of the new Magic series with a quote ‘The Power of Magic’. Unfortunately, nothing is known about the upcoming lineup of handsets.

Micromax IN Note 2 and vivo Y75 5G  debut in India

Micromax launched the IN Note 2 on January 25 as the successor of IN Note 1 for ₹13,490 (4GB + 64GB). The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra-lookalike phone arrives with a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, MediaTek Helio G95 chipset, 48MP (wide) + 5MP (ultra-wide) + 2MP (macro) + 2MP (depth) quad-camera setup, 16MP selfie camera, side-mounte fingerprint sensor, Android 11, 5,000mAh battery, and 30W fast charging.

Chinese handset maker vivo debuted a new budget 5G smartphone called vivo Y75 5G in India on January 27. For ₹21,990 (8GB  +128GB), the phone offers a 6.58-inch FHD+ display (LCD), MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC, 50MP (wide) + 2MP (macro) + 2MP (depth) triple camera setup, 16MP selfie camera, side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Android 12, 5,000mAh battery, and 18W fast charging.

Apple, which has had a good year with the launch of the iPhone 13 series models in the market, has now emerged as the leading smartphone brand in the Chinese market for the fourth quarter of 2021.

According to the report from market research firm Counterpoint Research, Apple had a record-high market share in China in the fourth quarter of 2021, covering around 23 percent of the total smartphone market.

This indicates a year-on-year growth of 32 percent for the US-based tech giant. The report says that Apple’s pricing strategy helped to perform better in China, along with the exit of Huawei from the premium segment, making room for Apple to capture its market share.

Following Apple is China’s own Vivo with a 19 percent market share. The third spot has been captured by OPPO, having a 17 percent share. Both Vivo and OPPO have witnessed a decline of 6 percent year-on-year.

Honor has rapidly recaptured its position in the market and is now the fourth-largest smartphone brand in China, having a 15 percent share. The company also witnessed an impressive 50 percent YoY growth.

Xiaomi, Huawei, and Realme stand at fifth, sixth, and seventh positions respectively with 13 percent, 7 percent, and 3 percent market share. Other brands make up for the remaining 4 percent market share.

While brands like Apple, Honor, and Realme saw growth in Q4 2021, the overall Chinese smartphone market witnessed a 9 percent decline. However, for the entire year of 2021, Vivo emerged as the leading brand with a 22 percent market share, followed by OPPO, Apple, Xiaomi, Honor, Huawei, and Realme.

The report adds that shipments of Xiaomi from near-zero in Q1 2020 to a record 0.5 million units during Q1 2021. The company surged from 2 percent to 16 percent market share during the past year.

The rise is mostly due to the strong presence of the Redmi smartphone models, which helped Xiaomi secure third place in the Chile smartphone market share. Also the pullout of Huawei helped Xiaomi grow in the market.

The report adds that if Xiaomi’s growth continues, then the brand will soon become the second-largest smartphone brand in Chile before the end of this year, overtaking the Lenovo-Motorola brand.

Smartphone shipments in Chile jumped 71 percent Year-on-Year from 1.7 million units during Q1 2020 to a record 2.9 million in Q1 2021, despite COVID-19 and political uncertainty. This is being attributed to a buoyant economy, strong exports, and a perceived high vaccination rate. Chile is the third-largest smartphone market in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico.

Samsung’s market share in Chile grew 63 percent YoY from 0.8 million in Q1 2020 to 1.2 million units in Q1 2021. Samsung’s smartphone market share in Chile remains relatively stable for now, around 42 percent. Lenovo-Motorola holds second place and grew its smartphone market share from 12 percent during Q1 2020 to 17 percent in Q1 2021.

Last month, South Korea-based LG confirmed that it is exiting the smartphone business and is shutting down its mobile phone division. The firm is now planning to focus on other areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence, and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services.

In a bid to fill the gap of LG smartphones in the company’s home market, leading smartphone brands like Samsung and Apple have launched a trade-in program for LG phone users in the country, reports ZDNet.

As a part of the new trade-in program, the companies are willing to pay the trade-in value of the phone as well as an additional 150,000 won, which is around $135, for LG smartphone users who exchange their phones for a Samsung Galaxy series smart phones or Apple iPhone lineup.

Apple will be running its trade-in program up to 25th September and the users of 4G and 5G LG smartphones can exchange them for an iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Mini. But the program is only available in retail stores run by telecom companies are not through the Apple Store or Apple resellers.

On the other hand, Samsung will be running its program until the end of June, and users of LG smartphones can exchange their devices for the Galaxy S21 series or the Galaxy Note 20 series, along with the Galaxy Z Flip 5G and Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Currently, Samsung holds about 65 percent of the smartphone market share in South Korea while Apple holds around 20 percent. LG, which has now exited the market, controlled about 13 percent of the market.

Even though LG is out of the mobile phone business, the company has confirmed that it will push up to three versions of Android updates for all its premium smartphones. The three updates will start counting from when the phone was released.

As per the report, Xiaomi accounts for 35 percent of the total smartphone market in Spain, followed by Samsung with a market share of 34 percent — just behind Xiaomi. Apple comes in third by capturing 14 percent of the market and the rest of the companies make for the remaining 18 percent.

The market share of Xiaomi in Spain in March 2020 was 24 percent and now it stands at 35 percent in March 2021, registering impressive growth. Even Samsung registered growth from 25 percent in March 2020 to 34 percent in March this year.

The Counterpoint report adds that the sales of Xiaomi increased 3 percent Month-on-Month and were mainly driven by the strong performance of its budget-focused Redmi 9A and Redmi K40 series smartphones.

Xiaomi, similar to other China-based smartphone brands, has been strategically expanding its operations to overseas markets. Companies like Xiaomi, Vivo, and OPPO are trying to fill the gap left by Huawei and Honor.

It’s noteworthy that companies like Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo didn’t face issues due to the shortage of chips in the market compared to other smaller manufacturers. This helped them push ahead with new devices in the market.

Xiaomi has been aggressively gaining market share and has now become the third-largest smartphone brand globally after Samsung and Apple. Xiaomi, which now holds 14 percent of the global market share, grew its smartphone shipments by 62 percent in the first quarter of this year to reach shipments of 49 million units globally.

The global coronavirus pandemic that has prevailed since early 2020 has affected sales projections in India’s smartphone market. The market has reportedly taken a dip, especially offline stores and outlets, as consumers continue to get their favorite brand products via numerous online outlets.

Presently, there is a lull in the rate at which smartphone brands open physical retail outlets, as most deployments have been stalled because of the negative growth outlook. Recent sales data show that the Indian smartphone market had experienced a general decline from its performance previously. Still, retail outlets with no online presence bore the brunt of the drop. This has warranted a downward review of the current growth forecasts, according to industry analysts.

A report by Counterpoint Research says the initial market share of offline sales has been downgraded to 55% due to the unimpressive numbers that have been recorded in the past two quarters. It is expected that the projections for the year will be reviewed further downwards, as the pandemic still bites hard on India. Other experts have given a similar outlook for the year.

There had been a gradual shift from the traditional offline sales model to e-commerce, but it seems this was further accentuated by the COVID-19 pandemic that saw much of the world under a forced lockdown for much of 2020. However, the offline retail outlets remain an integral component of the marketing strategy of some established brands in India like Xiaomi, Vivo, and others who continue to expand their physical presence in India through retail outlets. While small and medium shops continue to grapple with survival in the present circumstances, several offline channels have closed shop. This is projected to result in the loss of an estimated 50,000 jobs.

We expect the sales outlook to improve as vaccine rollout improves and the infection curve starts flattening out.

Xiaomi began the year 2020 by growing about 145% YoY in Europe. Cut back to 2021, a report by Counterpoint Research says that the company gained the most as the European market plummeted overall last year. realme was the fastest-growing brand in Europe with a ten-fold increase in sales.

According to the report, the European market plummeted overall by 14% in 2020 as compared to the year before. The market was worst affected by the COVID-19 as the disease first hit in April and came back in September to haunt the region. Among giants like Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi benefited the most in Europe.

Although Samsung was the top vendor in Europe in Q3 as per Canalys, the report says that Xiaomi managed to outsmart Samsung by growing about 90% annually. Speaking of which, Samsung reportedly didn’t manage to grab the void left by Huawei to a greater extent.

The company’s mid-rangers like Galaxy A51, and A71, and rivals’ Redmi Note 9 Pro outsold its flagships in early 2020. And amongst an army of Chinese companies rising in the region, Apple’s arrival in Q3 with iPhone 12 meant its game got spoilt more. With Galaxy S21, prospects are good for the Korean giant in 2021 but it has a lot of work to do.

Huawei’s market share dropped to 5% by December and the tussle with the US really affected them. As for the other Chinese brands, thanks to carrier partnerships OPPO grew as big as 68% in Q4. realme, on the other hand, saw a whopping 420% YoY growth in Q4 and remained the fastest-growing brand.

Last but not the least, despite getting a sluggish start, Apple had its budget iPhone SE pickup the sales in 2020. Later in the year, it launched the iPhone 12 devices and got a huge reception. In fact, the report says that the 2020 flagships helped Apple gain a whopping 30% of share in Q4.

Moving into 2021, Research Analyst, Ankit Malhotra says that the market is craving for 5G devices. As a result, sales of Galaxy S21, iPhone 12 along with those from Chinese vendors should help drive the market in Q1 2021.

The smartphone shipments in the Netherlands, Demark, and Finland have shown signs of positive growth quarter on quarter in the fourth and final quarter of last year. The primary reason for the growth was the launch of Apple’s iPhone 12 series.

According to a CounterPoint Research report, that the rebound arrived despite a few regions still remaining under partial lockdown. Furthermore, Netherlands recorded the highest degree of recovery with a 19 percent quarter on quarter rise in smartphone shipments, over the other regions, followed by Finland and Denmark with 14 percent and 10 percent QoQ growth respectively. Notably, 5G enabled handset’s shipments also grew by 50 percent during this time in all three nations.

This was higher than the overall European average. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 lineup was the most popular 5G device in these regions, which is also what led to the positive growth in Q4 of 2020. Similarly, the Samsung Galaxy S20 and Note 20 lineup also performed well in the countries, while the mid tier segment had the OnePlus Nord emerged as the highest selling 5G Android device in Finland and Denmark.

Interestingly, popular Chinese brands also played a role in the markets. With Oppo being the third largest brand in the Dutch market, recording great performance thanks to its Reno 4 series. This also marked a 123 percent year on year growth of the brand. Samsung was also one of the major players in the mid range segments, with its A series seeing strong sales, but Apple still led the 5G handset market overall.

Russia is an equally important market for Chinese brands. Last Quarter(Q3), Huawei led there with a 27.8% share in the Online Smartphone market. Counterpoint Research has come out with the next Quarter report and this time it is Xiaomi racing ahead of giants like Samsung and Huawei.

According to the report, entire smartphone sales declined by 11% YoY in Russia during Q4 2020. One of the major reasons is the second-wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the share of the online Smartphone sales grew 1% QoQ to reach 35% of total sales in Q4 compared. Among the lot, Xiaomi managed to beat Samsung and Huawei to get an Online Shipment share of 31% in Q4.

Just like the last Quarter, Samsung seems to be the overall Popular brand in Russia as per the report. Despite this, Xiaomi managed to grow 4% QoQ to capture 31% of Online Market Shipment Share and top the list in Q4. Samsung sits in 2nd place with 27% share, a 2.1% YoY and only a 0.7% QoQ growth.

Surprisingly, Apple, which was nowhere near the top contenders in Q3 grew 7.3% QoQ to break into the top-3 brands online. Its share as of Q4 sits at 15.5% thanks to the iPhone 12 series devices’ sales. That said, as Huawei stumbled with a further drop in Shares during Q4, newbies like realme swooped in to take advantage and capture a 3.3% share.

If you are a Huawei fan and are not happy with the things going the way they are, fear not as the company is said to bring nearly 40 product categories. These probably include PC, Smart Glass, Monitors, and few Smartphones as well to Russia this year. While the specifics of the smartphones aren’t clear, it could be the P50 Series and some mid-rangers.

To sum up, Associate Director of Counterpoint, Tarun Pathak, says as customers look for features like NFC, OLED, eSIM, the ASP(Average Selling Price) of Smartphones rose 8% YoY to settle at $258. He also said that e-commerce giants introduced lot of offers, cashback to boost online sales.

In the past few days, Counterpoint Research released its Q3 2020 reports on various smartphone markets, including global. Now, the company has published an infographic highlighting the major happenings in the smartphone world during the third quarter.

According to the research firm, the Global Smartphone Market shipment declined 4% YoY in Q3 2020, however, it grew 32% QoQ. All in all, the entire market shipped 366 million units.

As for regional markets, the India Smartphone Market exceeded pre-COVID levels during this period. The market’s shipments reached 53 million units and therefore, it grew 9% YoY and 188% QoQ respectively.

Samsung Electronics has maintained its top spot in the smartphone market of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region in the the third quarter of this year, as per a new report from earlier today (1st December 2020).

Samsung accounted for 45 percent of the Gulf smartphone market in the period between July and September in terms of smartphones units. This is up from 40 percent from the previous quarter of this year. The news arrives from IDC (International Data Corp), a known analytics based research firm and was reported by YonhapNewsAgency. According to Akash Balachandran, a senior research analyst at IDC, “With its large portfolio of models in the entry-level and mid-range price bands, Samsung not only maintained its leading position but also captured share lost by Huawei.”

Apple arrived second in the region and had a market share of 15 percent in terms of units, which was down from 18 percent for the second quarter of this year. The drop was likely due to the delay of its iPhone 12 series launch. Chinese smartphone vendors also followed close behind the Cupertino based giant with Huawei accounting for 13 percent of the market share, and Xiaomi holding 12 percent of the Gulf smartphone market.

However, things change in terms of value, with Apple leading with a 46.3 percent market share, followed by Samsung with a 30.8 percent market share in Q3 2020. Notably, the overall GCC smartphone market also declined by 0.9 percent quarter on quarter, down to 4.16 million units. In terms of value, the market fell by 11.6 percent quarter on quarter to 1.16 billion US Dollars.

Out of the entire Gulf region, Saudi Arabia accounted for 52.6 percent of all smartphone shipments in the GCC region in the third quarter of 2020. The UAE (United Arab Emirates) arrived second with 24.1 percent of the total market. Ramazan Yavuz, a senior research manager at IDC added that, “Brands like Apple and Samsung will also post a strong performance in the upcoming quarters with newly released models in their portfolios. Chinese vendors, focused on driving penetration in the region, will continue their marketing investments, all of which will translate into a well-performing market in the short to mid-term.”

Counterpoint Research has released a report on Canada Smartphone Market Q3 2020. According to it, the market grew 13% YoY, Apple and Samsung accounted for 86% of the entire sales, and carriers pushed more 5G devices.

Due to pent-up demand and back-to-school promotions, smartphone sales increased in the third quarter of 2020 in Canada. Online sales continued to remain strong despite consumers having begun to visit brick and mortar stores.

The report from Strategy Analytics indicates that Samsung has reached an all-time high market share of 72.3 percent in South Korea in the third quarter of this year. This is the first time the company has managed to cross the 70 percent mark.

After releasing its reports for India and China, Counterpoint Research has now published a report on US Smartphone Market Q3 2020. According to it, the market witnessed a 31% QoQ growth, however, it declined by 6% YoY. In other words, the market is yet to recover completely.

The US Smartphone Market rebounded in the third quarter of 2020 as certain OEMs outperformed despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the market declined YoY, Apple and Samsung registered YoY growth in the same quarter.

As for carriers, T-Mobile performed the best by beating expectations, whereas AT&T and Verizon also witnessed growth. That said, iPhone 11 was the best-seller, followed by iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone 11 Pro Max respectively. 

As states began to ease restrictions in the past few months, retail outlets started re-opening with longer store hours and more occupancy numbers. But still, more than 20% of sales occurred online. This number is expected to hit 40% with the launch of the iPhone 12 series and the upcoming holiday season.

That said, although the numbers seem positive, it may not be the same in the coming months. The 31% QoQ growth was due to the pent-up demand and stimulus money in the month of July. 

But sales diminished in August and September, which resulted in a 6% YoY decline. This occurred due to the unemployment in the country, in addition to the lack of another stimulus package.

In Q4, Apple is expected to see growth with the sales of the iPhone 12 series. On the other hand, Samsung has announced a higher storage variant of Galaxy S20 FE and is also promoting Galaxy A and Galaxy Note20 series for the festive season.

The Indian smartphone market is showing signs of recovery as the market sees a growth of 8 percent to 50 million units in the third quarter of 2020. This marks an all time record for smartphone shipments in a single quarter.

According to a Canalys report, Xiaomi is still the market leader in the country and saw a growth of 9 percent to ship 13.1 million units during this period. Similarly, Samsung also saw a notable growth of 7 percent in Q3, with total shipments arriving at 10.2 million units. This had the South Korean tech giant regain its 2nd position from Vivo, which now stood 3rd with a total shipment of 8.8 million units with a growth of 19 percent.

Other Chinese brands like Realme and Oppo rounded up the list with 8.7 million and 6.1 million units respectively. Adwait Mardikar, an analyst from Canalys stated that “The government, slowly but surely reducing restrictions on movement after a three month lockdown, has created the perfect atmosphere for sustained growth. While almost all vendors have shown positive shipment growth, the true winners are the online channels, who have been buoyed with a huge influx of devices ahead of the festive season. Ongoing sales at Amazon and Flipkart are a clear indication that despite the economic downturn, India’s penchant for a good smartphone, and a good bargain, remains intact.”

In other words, as the local market recovers as things normalize after the lockdowns that occurred earlier this year. Furthermore, recent launches paired with sales have also boosted the pent up demand in the nation. Even Apple has finally opened a new direct online store in India, which should broaden its strategy in regards to sales incentives and more. Although, its newly launched iPhone 12 series might be a “tough sell” this year, especially considering 5G networking is yet to be available for the mass market.

According to the latest report published by DigiTimes Research, global smartphone shipments are expected to witness double-digit growth in the year 2021 after three consecutive years of decline.

The report adds that shipment in the upcoming year could grow by 150 million units, mainly because of the acceleration of 5G operations in several regions, including the USA, Western Europe, and Japan.

It also estimates that the entry-level 5G smartphones, as well as 4G smartphones, will drive the demand in the emerging markets. The report adds that these devices are expected to reach over 1.5 billion units in 2023 and 1.7 billion units in 2025.

Recently, Canalys predicted in its latest forecast report that in 2020, global 5G smartphone shipments will reach 278 million units. It also added that in 2020, smartphone shipments will drop by 10.7 percent compared to 2019, and it is expected to rebound in 2021, with a year-on-year growth of 9.9 percent.

The coronavirus outbreak in China has severely impacted the tech industry not only in China but globally. With several major events getting cancelled, including the Mobile World Congress 2020 and production as well as supply chain getting impacted, the companies are cutting down their sales forecast.

Now, the numbers coming in from China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), which is a research institute under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), shows that the Chinese smartphone market witnessed a touch time in January this year.

As per the report, in the first month of the year, January 2020, the domestic mobile phone shipments in China sharply fell by 38.9 percent year-on-year with shipments of just 20.8 million units. In that, shipments from domestic brands fell by 42.9 percent.

However, the report shows that in the month on January, 34 new mobile phone models were launched in the market which shows year-on-year increase of 6.3 percent. Out of those models, eight were 2G phones, 18 were 4G phones and other eight were 5G devices.

The impact in the mobile phone shipments in the Chinese market has been attributed to two major reasons — Lunar New Year holiday and coronavirus outbreak. The Covid-19 outbreak has led to closure of several manufacturing plants in the country as well as some brick-and-mortar stores have also remain shut.

Citing the effect of coronavirus outbreak, several research firms have downgraded their first-quarter outlook for China’s smartphone market. International Data Corporation (IDC) and Strategy Analytics said that the country’s smartphone shipments are likely to suffer a year-on-year drop of more than 30 percent in the first quarter of this year.

In a rare company advisory released earlier this week by Apple — the world’s most valuable tech company — said it is reducing the company’s revenue targets this quarter. Facebook has also reduced production goals for its Oculus Quest virtual reality headsets.

According to the new financial report, Samsung Electronics‘ saw the fall of its operating profits by 33 percent (or one-third) in the fourth quarter of 2019. The South Korean tech giant is the world’s largest smartphone and memory chips manufacturer and faced declining profits in both categories.

In contrast to 2018, Samsung suffered from a number of obstacles once the chip market declined in 2019 after the initial surge. Furthermore, the premium segment of smartphones has increasingly become an intensely competitive segment. However, the numbers aren’t all that bleak as the company has exceeded expectations, according to analysts.

The financial figures apparently beat expectations as chip demand saw improvement, with healthy smartphone sales. This could also lead up to the new year, 2020, and the fresh upcoming lineup. In 2019, the other three quarters of the year also saw a sizeable net loss of profits; about half of what had been accrued in the same respective quarters in 2018.

He revealed that Xiaomi now has a presence in 82 overseas markets, which is not a small feat considering that the company began its plan for the global presence in the year 2014, four years after Xiaomi was founded in China.

As of the second quarter of 2018, Xiaomi’s international business grew by 150 percent and has successfully entered 82 foreign markets. Among the 82 markets the company is present it, the brand ranks among the top five in about 25 markets.

Lei Jun further added that the aim to Xiaomi is to bring high-quality products to local consumers with good pricing. The company is also investing to train local teams and manufacture products locally. For instance, 95 percent of Xiaomi’s products in Indonesia are manufactured locally. In India, the company has already established local manufacturing units and has also started investing in startups to develop the overall mobile internet industry.

Once again, Xiaomi beat its rival Samsung to be the leading smartphone brand with most shipments in the Indian market in the third quarter of this year, as per the report from Counterpoint Research. Xiaomi’s overall market share during Q3 2018 comes at 27 percent while Samsung managed to grab 23 percent on market share.

In Indonesia, Xiaomi became the second largest brand for the first time and is leading the sub-$150 segments. It holds 22 percent market share in Indonesia while the leading brand Samsung holds 25 percent market share.

The company continues to expand globally and with gains in the market share in various countries, Xiaomi’s global shipment numbers are also growing. The company reportedly shipped 9.7 percent of all smartphones shipped worldwide during third-quarter this year. Globally, Xiaomi ranks fourth in terms of smartphone shipments having shipped over 34.3 million units in Q3 2018, just behind Samsung, Huawei, and Apple.

Rising Sun Data, an analytics firm has published a report on China for smartphone shipments of the first half of this year. According to the report, the region witnessed a massive 12 percent drop in smartphone shipments on a yearly basis.

While the total smartphone shipments in the region dropped significantly, the homegrown company Huawei takes the top spot for the first time, leading the smartphones market in China with 29 percent market share. It’s noteworthy that the Huawei’s market share is a combination of both brands — Huawei and Honor.

If the market share of both brands is considered separately, then Oppo takes the lead with around 20.1 percent market and Vivo grabs the second spot with around 16.9 percent market share, edging out Honor which managed to grab 16.7 percent market share, according to the report.

Xiaomi takes the fourth position in China’s smartphone market share with around 15.1 percent and Huawei grabs the fifth position with 12.7 percent share. US-based Apple comes in the sixth place with 8.9 percent market share — the first non-Chinese smartphone manufacturer in the list.

The report adds that over 90 percent of overall smartphone sales in China in the first half of the year were from the companies ranked in the Top 5 list. This is believed to be the direct consequences of stagnating market where larger player squeeze out smaller players.

Recently, a report from Canalys suggested that the Chinese phone market witnessed 8 percent drop in Q2 year-on-year. The same firm had reported that the Chinese phone market slumped by 21% year on year in Q1 this year.

Globally, Huawei also managed to overtake Apple in smartphone shipments to grab the second spot, according to the reports from  IDC, Canalys, and Strategy Analytics. While Huawei shipped more than 54 million devices in the second quarter of this year, Apple managed to ship 41.3 million iPhones.

According to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker for the first quarter of 2016, Oppo and Vivo have tipped off Xiaomi and Lenovo from the top 5 smartphone vendors in Q1 2016. Huawei has on the other hand gained from the likes of P9, Mate Series, and Nexus 6, along with entry level devices from its Honor brand. Huawei shipped 27.5 million devices with a growth of over 58 percent!

OPPO registered a growth of staggering 153.2 percent and shipped 18.5 million smartphones. OPPO’s growth has been the strongest among the top 5 smartphone makers in the world. Although OPPO is a very unfamiliar name in western countries, it derives 20 percent of its sales from overseas markets.

Vivo, which clocked 123.8 percent growth has less than 10 percent of its overall sales from markets outside China. The company shipped 14.3 million units during this time.

“Lenovo benefited with ASPs below US$150 in 2013, and Xiaomi picked up the mantle with ASPs below $200 in 2014 and 2015. Now Huawei, OPPO, and vivo, which play mainly in the sub-$250 range, are positioned for a strong 2016,” said Melissa Chau, senior research manager with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.
