Honor recently made a comeback in the Indian market. It returned to the region and unveiled the new Honor 90 smartphone model (check out our review here). But apart from just launching new handsets, it appears that the company is also looking to expand its production in the country as well.

Htech brings smartphone production in Q1 2024

In an interview with the Economic Times, Madhav Sheth, the CEO of HTech, talked about the company’s business strategy for the local market. He also revealed that the company is currently discussing the possibility of bringing in local contract manufacturers to begin production of its smartphones in India. Apparently, it is in talks with three such manufacturers at the moment.

The senior executive further added that the brand is planning on starting production of these Honor phones in the country by the first quarter of next year. Madhav Sheth has also confirmed that Honor has already invested 400 crore INR towards setting up operations and distributions in India. As of right now, the Honor 90 leads the wave for a fresh lineup of Honor branded smartphones. So there are more models that are planned to launch in the region.

During the festive season, the company is targeting to hit sales figures of over 50,000 units for the Honor 90 from both offline and online channels. Additionally, it is planning 60 crore INR worth of offers for the festive sales season. The local smartphone production confirms that the brand is also joining the Make in India initiative.

In Q1 2023, China experienced a nearly 15% decline in semiconductor production and a 13.8% drop in smartphone production, primarily affecting local brands like Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. This decline in electronics production contrasted with a 4.5% GDP growth and 3.9% industrial output increase in March. The US export control regime on semiconductor equipment and increased competition from factories in Vietnam and India are contributing factors to China’s challenges.

Now according to recently released data by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) indicates a notable recovery in the electronic manufacturing sector in China from January to August. Key findings from the report reveal:

Chinese Electronic Manufacturing Sector Is Recovering Slowly

Steady Improvement in Production: Electronic manufacturing enterprises contributed to a 0.9% year-on-year increase in value added, showing improvement compared to the first seven months.

August’s Strong Performance: August witnessed a remarkable 5.8% year-on-year increase in value added by the electronic information manufacturing industry.

Mobile Phone Production: Despite a slight decline of 0.9%, mobile phone production reached an impressive 935 million units, with smartphones contributing 679 million units but experiencing a 7.5% decline.

Decline in Microcomputer Devices and Integrated Circuits: The production of microcomputer devices fell by 21.7%, and integrated circuits saw a 1.4% decline.

Mixed Export Picture: The electronic information manufacturing sector faced an 8% decline in export delivery value, though it improved slightly compared to the earlier part of the year. Exports of laptops, mobile phones, and integrated circuits declined by 21.7%, 10.9%, and 6.2%, respectively.

Financial Performance: The industry generated an operating revenue of 9.21 trillion yuan ($1.2 trillion), with a 3.5% year-on-year drop, which showed signs of improvement. Costs decreased by 3%, totaling 8.06 trillion yuan ($1.12 trillion), and profits stood at 354.7 billion yuan ($49.6 billion), reflecting a substantial decrease of 20.6% but improving over the previous months.

China’s electronic manufacturing sector has displayed resilience and a positive trajectory despite facing challenges during the first eight months of the year. While there have been declines in certain areas, such as smartphone production and exports, the overall industry has shown signs of recovery and growth, with August particularly standing out as a strong month. The sector’s ability to adapt and improve, along with a potential boost in the coming months, indicates a promising future for China’s electronic manufacturing industry.

There are only a couple of brands in the smartphone market that offer a foldable phone model. However, all of these arrive with a heft price tag. Now, a new report has revealed what it actually costs to build a foldable phone from Samsung, so let’s see if its actually worth their exorbitant price tags.

The foldable handset is a fairly recent breed of smartphones with its unique flexible display technology. In the foldable segment, the South Korean tech giant is the leader in this category with its latest Galaxy Z Fold 4 5G model being its flagship model. This foldable phone had been first launched for an eye watering price tag of 1,799 US Dollars. But this is the official pricing and not its official production cost.

However, a new report has found the official cost of actually building a Galaxy Z Fold 4. As oer an independent teardown from Fomalhaut Techno Solution, Samsung has to spend around 670 US Dollars for each unit of this model. In other words, the manufacturing expense of the flagship foldable smartphone is around 40 percent of its actual retail price tag. This means that the company still has a larger left for its profit margin.

Although, this profit margin is still nothing compared to the margins brought in by a brand like Apple. Furthermore, this cost would likely include the company’s efforts in marketing and advertising as well as other operations cost. Regardless, with cutting edge technology and other features, the hefty price tag for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 seems understandable now.

The report, coming from Reuters, cites employees as the source.
As per the report, America’s largest warehouse market is full and the major retailers in the United States have warned of slowing sales given that shoppers are not spending as much as they used to before and during the early era of the pandemic.

One of the workers at the plant told Reuters, “We are going to work just three days per week, some lines are adjusting to a four-day workweek instead of six before, and of course, no overtime is needed.”

The manufacturing plant in Vietnam’s northern province of Thai Nguyen has been the most affected. It is one of the two mobile manufacturing bases in the country where Samsung produces half of its smartphones.

While Samsung says that it has not discussed reducing its annual production target in Vietnam, the South Korean giant is optimistic about smartphone demand in the second half of the year as it said during its earnings call last week that supply disruptions had mostly been resolved and that demand would either stay flat or see single-digit growth.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, the Chinese tech giant has started its smartphone production in the northern province of Taiyuan from a Hong Kong based foundry. Furthermore, the handsets made in Vietnam will be exported to other nations like Malaysia and Thailand. This moves arrives as the country sees a growth in population and its economy, which signals a rise in demand as well.

Thus, Xiaomi hopes to establish a foothold in the market, which is expected to see growth as well. It also aims on catching up to its rival Samsung Electronics. The South Korean brand is currently the most popular brand in Vietnam in terms of sales market share. As per local media reports, the Chinese company has trusted production to Hong Kong based DBG Technology. This factory covers an area of around 200,000 square meters and has an investment of about 80 million US Dollars.

As of right now, Xiaomi mainly made its smartphones in China and India. However, the global pandemic in 2020 lead to the supply chain being severely disrupted, which in turn affected sales as well. So, the company plans on diversifying and spreading its supply chain.

The company has lowered production goal by around 30 million units due to various reasons ranging from the economy to even the supply chain.

According to a TechRadar report, Korean media publication claimed that the company has reduced its orders of smartphones down to 280 million units from 310 million units. Furthermore, this slashing of orders is not limited to just one or two segments and has been done across its entire handset portfolio. In other words, phones ranging from the budget A series to the premium grade flagship Galaxy S and Z series have also been affected by this decision.

As per the report, there were a number of reasons why the South Korean tech giant made this move, which hints at the potential slowdown of the market. This includes economic issues as well as ongoing supply constraints. While the market did recover from the dip in 2020, with 5G handsets leading the rise, ongoing supply chain issues and materials shortages have stunted market growth. Lockdowns in China and the ongoing semiconductor shortages have also worsened the situation.

Apart from this, there have also been wider macroeconomic and geopolitical factors that have impacted the smartphone market due to their affects on the global economy. Due to these factors, consumers are less likely to purchase a new smartphone and delay their upgrade cycle. Although, Qualcomm believes that this would affect the entry level market more than the premium segments. On a positive note, the smartphone market is also expected to see a rise in the second half of this year.

According to a Clarin report, the Chinese tech giant is planning on growing its footprint in Argentina. As of right now, the brand is already available in more than 100 countries and regions. The company has already began marketing its first three Redmi models in Argentinian market, which are being targeted for the youth. Furthermore, the news also arrives amid a large gap in the Argentine market due to the absence of Huawei and LG Electronics.

Xiaomi is also partnering up with Etercor, which is the Chinese brand’s distribution partner for its electronic products. Juan Pablo Baiardi, an official from Etercor, stated that “We have been working together for several years to make the brand known to Argentine consumers. And at the same time convincing the brand of the relevance of the Argentine market in Latin America and of the huge opportunity they have here. Like all good work done with patience and solidity, now both realities are coming together.”

He further added that consumers are looking for more options and Xiaomi is being seen as a worthwhile alternative. In other words, the company has a lot of potential in the region. At the moment, the company will also be manufacturing its smartphones from Etercor group’s factory in Tierra del Fuego.
Samsung, which has been dominating the smartphone market for years, was the largest smartphone manufacturer by production volume in the second quarter of the year, making 58.5 million units. Compared to the company’s production in the first quarter of 2020, this is a massive drop of 23.5 percent.

The company has production facilities in India and Vietnam which have been hit hard with the COVID-19 outbreak. The South Korean giant had to temporarily halt production in some local factories or scale back production.

Coming to Apple, the production of the iPhone declined in the second quarter of the year but that is normal given that the company entered a model transition phase. In the third quarter, the Cupertino-based giant launches its new iPhone model and this time, it is set to launch the iPhone 13 series in the coming days.

The production of the iPhone went down 22 percent quarter-on-quarter to 42 million units. If the companies are to be ranked based on the production numbers, then Apple is moved to the fourth position, but it’ll make a comeback in the third and fourth quarter.

With Samsung getting the top position and Apple ranking fourth, Chinese smartphone makers OPPO and Xiaomi have secured the second and third position based on the smartphone units produced in Q2 2021. Both the companies produced 49.5 million units each and the count includes their sub-brands.

According to a MyDrivers report, the Chinese tech giant’s official stores in China have been facing this issue. The report adds that employees working in these stores have revealed that the company is selling fewer handsets now, although, this is mainly attributed to the fact that the country is facing a shortage of smartphone chips. For those unaware, the world is facing a major shortage of semiconductors at the moment, with various industries being severely impacted.

As per the employee, almost every smartphone model in Huawei stores are now out of stock, with certain configurations and colors variants also being unavailable for the ones that are in stock. The report found that from the five experience stores that were visited, a combined total of just four smartphone models were on sale. Furthermore, apart from just the lack of various models, the prices of these devices have also changes and low end handsets have almost completely disappeared.

One of the official Huawei stores in Chengdu, China, had a salesperson say that the Nova series that were targeted towards students was no longer in production and that the cheapest variant that is currently available is the Nova 8 Pro. This is also available in limited quantities and is priced at 3999 Yuan (roughly 617 US Dollars).

According to a TrendForce report, the report arrives amid high sales of the iPhone 12 series in the last quarter, which also had Huawei drastically lose its market share due to US sanctions. Despite the decline, the quarter is estimated to record strong performance considering the first quarter usually sees a quarter on quarter decline of around 20 percent following the fourth and final quarter, which is usually the peak season of the year since demand falls.

The smartphone production for Q4 2020 is estimated to be around 364 million units, with Apple being expected to be the leader in terms of production volume. While the high end premium segment saw a decline in 2020, the Cupertino based giant still managed to push through “the headwinds and capture market share by introducing 5G models and adopting an aggressive pricing strategy,” as per the report. Apple produced 77.6 million units of iPhones in Q4 2020, marking an 85 percent increase quarter on quarter.

Furthermore, the company managed to retain its lead even in the first quarter of 2021, followed by Samsung, Oppo, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Vivo, as per the report. Samsung is expected to see a decline of 14 percent during this period, with its smartphone shipments estimated to fall to 67 million units in Q4 2020. The primary reason for the decline was the launch of new iPhone models that dominated the holiday season. Although, we can expect the momentum to slow down for Apple following this quarter.

According to an EEO report, a source close to the smartphone chipset industry has stated that there is no extreme shortage of mobile chips for handset manufacturers. In other words, there is not risk of smartphones being out of stock due to shortages in semiconductor supply. Previously, we had reported on chip supply issues affecting chip makers Qualcomm and their supply to OEMs like Realme and Xiaomi. However, it seems that despite supply issues, these brands are still able to manufacture their smartphone offerings.

Earlier this week, Oppo said that its current supply of chips and related raw materials from its supply chain is tight, but with its current inventory, it can still guarantee production of its smartphones. As per the source, the market condition at the moment has various components of SoCs (Systems on Chip) also being in short supply, including the main chip, the RF, power, Bluetooth, and other crucial components of the processor.

Meanwhile, Huawei, which is the largest smartphone maker in China, has been seeing a sharp decline in the market share within its home country. This is primarily due to US sanctions that have cut out its chip supply, causing rival Chinese brands fighting to steal its market share in China. Unfortunately, the global chip shortage is expected to last till at least the second half of the year and could likely also stretch to the next year as well. So stay tuned for more updates.

According to a TrenForce report, 2020 had seen a record breaking 11 percent year on year decline in smartphone production. In the previous year, the top 6 rankings were held by Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo, in terms of production volume. But despite 2021 seeing an increase in overall global smartphone production, the Chinese tech giant is expected to see a massive fall in its market share, falling from its top 6 rankings entirely.

Furthermore, 2021 will also have its sub brand, Honor, operating independently from Huawei. The reason the company sold off its budget smartphone unit was to ensure its survival after it faced various US sanctions against its own operations. In other words, Honor will now be competing against its former parent company in the smartphone market. Furthermore, TrendForce also believes that Huawei will face more difficulties in regaining its lost smartphone market share.

With people starting to become more accustomed to the “new normal,” the report believes that the smartphone industry will see a rise in unit production by up to 9 percent this year. Although, TrendForce believes that the pandemic still plays a big variable at the moment, while 5G enabled handsets will rise to reach 37 percent of the total handset production in 2021. However, production is expected to cause constraints due to limited foundry capacities across the globe.

And this is evident in the latest TrendForce Q3 2020 report. Accordingly, Chinese companies like Xiaomi, OPPO have raised the stakes in Q3 2020 Smartphone production by a huge QoQ margin. And the report predicts that the trend will continue into 2021.

TrendForce has released the report on Global Smartphone production for Q3 2020 along with predictions for Q4 2020, and beyond. As per the report, global smartphone production reaches a total of 336 million in Q3. This is a 20% QoQ(Quarter over Quarter) from Q2 and the highest QoQ increase in recent years. Plus, the rise is reportedly due to easing pandemic, holiday season, high targets of companies.

As you can see below, Chinese companies like Xiaomi, OPPO are next to Samsung(23.2%) with 13.2, and 13.4% market shares respectively. However, despite the lower shares, production of Xiaomi, OPPO has grown 51%, and 64% respectively QoQ in Q3 2020. To compare, Samsung only grew about 42%. Further, both Xiaomi and OPPO will reportedly ramp up production in Q4 and reach about 47 and 46 million production units respectively.

Credit: TrendForce

Apple gets a meager rise of 2% QoQ for production in Q3. Thus, it sits behind the Chinese giants at 4th place with 42 million units. However, with iPhone 12 series launch it will substantially improve in Q4 2020. Despite showing a 19% decline QoQ, Huawei manages to make 42 million units in 2020. With this, it has not only managed to equate Apple in production but retain the market position in certain regions.

Regarding inventories, Huawei has already stockpiled enough chipsets by bulking the orders before the September deadline of the US came up. To recall, the USA had altered regulations and made getting a license for supplying Huawei mandatory. As a result, report says the company might enter the scarcity stage in Q1/Q2 2021 if licensing becomes an issue. In the table, Vivo manages to get only the last place with just 30 million unit production in 2020 despite a 13% QoQ rise.

Going into Q4 2020, the report predicts a production range of 351 million units with a 4% QoQ rise. Despite a YoY decline, the production will continue to revive gradually from the pandemic. But it is subject to responses from the semiconductor industry and geopolitical scenarios. To sum up, Global smartphone production will sit somewhere around 1.25 billion units for 2020. However, it could increase to 1.36 billion units in 2021 with 5G continuing to be the center of attraction.

Editor’s Pick: Xiaomi Mi 10T, Mi 10T Pro 5G with 144Hz display, SD865, up to 108MP triple cameras launched in India for Rs 35,999 (~$490)

Unfortunately, the senior executive refrained from divulging the location for the new factory. According to Lei Jun, “With China facing a complicated international business environment, smart manufacturing is the way forward for enterprises. Through independent innovation, Xiaomi hopes to popularize industrial robots and reduce manufacturing costs to one-tenth of the present level.” To reach this goal, the company is also heavily investing in research and development of its core technologies and has even set up an investment fund in over 70 companies related to intelligent equipment, semiconductors, and raw materials.

The founder stated that “We have spent 10 billion yuan (roughly $1.48 billion) on research and development since the beginning of this year and we will increase it by a certain percentage in the subsequent years.” Further adding that “Xiaomi will continue to expand its footprint in the overseas markets.

Amidst the stricter regulations being placed upon Huawei, the company has had to slow down its pace of orders from its handset ODMs. For those unaware, the US has been successful in cutting chip supply to the Chinese vendor. After the company lost TSMC as its primary chip supplier, the US government also amended its regulations to further hamper its supply chain. Now, Huawei can’t source technology that has originated from America, without a special license being issued.

Editor’s Pick: ByteDance will require China’s approval for selling TikTok business in the US

Being a major player in the smartphone market, this means that the company stands to lose a lot of grounds in the market share. In other words, we can expect other companies to fill in the void created within the market. According to sources close to a certain Chinese handset ODM, the company is reducing its orders to better cope with the intensifying pressure from the US Government.

Since Huawei lost Google support on its Android smartphones, the company has faced a decline in its various overseas markets. This means that China is currently its largest and most important market. So, the slowed pace of smartphone output could noticeably hamper its smartphone sales in the region in 2020. We can also expect other Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo to take advantage of the situation.

Several Chinese smartphone companies, which are among the leading brands in the market, are already making most of the phones in India.

Now, it seems that some of the biggest names in the smartphone industry are also eyeing production in India. Recently Apple started manufacturing its high-end iPhone 11 for the first time in India and now its turn for Samsung.

As per the report coming from the Economic Times, the South Korean giant is planning to shift some portion of its smartphone production from Vietnam and some other countries to India. It adds that the company is planning to produce devices worth $40 billion in India.

Citing people aware of the development, the report claims that Samsung has already submitted estimates with the government for making smartphones worth over $40 billion in India for the next five years under PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme.

EDITOR’S PICK: ZTE Axon 20 5G’s launch date is September 1 in China

It is also being reported that most of the phones manufactured in India with a factory price of over $200, which could account for over $25 billion, will be exported. Currently, Vietnam is the second-largest exporter of smartphones after China.

After closing down two smartphone factories in China in 2018, Samsung recently shut down its last smartphone production facility in China. The company’s smartphone ODM operations, which were halted because of the COVID-19 pandemic, have now been resumed and could account for around 10 percent of the company’s total smartphones.

A couple of months ago, Samsung announced a new factory, touted as the world’s largest mobile factory. It is located in Sector 81 in Noida and has a production capacity of 120 million mobile devices a month. This comes at a time when smartphone users in the country are about to touch the 340 million mark by the end of this year.

The center is located adjacent to Vivo’s global headquarters and has a total area of 216,000 square meters, a construction area of 345,000 square meters, and had Vivo invest about 2 billion yuan (roughly 285 million US Dollars). The site will focus on production with quality high quality development. When making the new manufacturing plant, the Chinese tech giant didn’t simply fix the shortcomings of its previous production line but rather rebuilt it from the ground up as a smart manufacturing plant.

The virus, which began spreading from China, has now affected people in more than 50 countries.

Amid all this, Samsung Electronics, the leading smartphone maker in the world, is trying hard to diversify its production to minimise the fallout. As per the report, the company is now shutting down its production facility in South Korea.

As per the report, after reporting six confirmed COVID-19 infections at its smartphone plant in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, Samsung has decided to temporarily scale back operations on the Gumi line and shift the same to Vietnam.

The South Korean giant has been producing its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S20 lineup as well as the foldable Galaxy Z Flip, in Gumi, for domestic consumers. Samsung said the decision to shift to Vietnam was made to ensure “stable production” of its high-end smartphones.

With more than 6,500 reported cases of coronavirus infections so far, South Korean is the worst-hit country outside of China. Samsung’s Gumi plant, which has about 10,000 workers, has been frequently shut down in the past weeks because many workers were quarantined amid increasing infections.

Because of the coronavirus, the world’s smartphone market is forecast to dip. Counterpoint Research reports that the global handset market is estimated to shrink 5 percent in the first quarter alone while Strategy Analytics says that the volume of phone shipments would decline 10 percent from its initial forecast, largely due to the COVID-19 scare.

However, it now seems that the once-bustling smartphone plans for productions are now about to fade out.

Both smartphone brands from South Korea — Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are either shutting down their production lines in the home market or are curtailing domestic output, as per the report from industry analysts.

Nowadays, companies are moving their productions to third-world countries where the production cost is lower because of lower labor costs. This is important as the competition with Chinese smartphone makers such as Huawei and Xiaomi have made the smartphone market price competitive.

Going by the developments, it is being speculated that the smartphone production in South Korea could soon come down to zero. According to a report from Strategy Analytics, smartphones produced in Korea accounted for 11.4 percent of the total shipped in the global market in 2008, but the figure fell sharply to 1.3 percent in 2018.

The Korean production of smartphones is expected to fall further following LG Electronics’ decision to phase out work at its Pyeongtaek factory in Gyeonggi Province by the end of the year. It will now shift production to Hai Phong in Vietnam where the firm has operated a factory since 2014.

On the other hand, Samsung Electronics is also scaling down its output in Korea. The company produced about 60 million smartphones annually in Korea a decade ago, but is currently producing about 20 million. Samsung, which operates factories in Vietnam, Brazil, India and Indonesia, produces about 300 million devices a year in total.

As per the recent figures, Samsung produces almost half of its entire smartphones in Vietnam. The company is also planning to build additional factories in India, seeking to increase smartphone production.
