A recent report by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology shows that the mobile phone market in China is experiencing a notable increase, with shipments witnessing a staggering year-on-year increase of nearly 60% in September 2023. This surge is attributed to a fresh wave of the “replacement tide,” fueled by the release of flagship models by several market brands, including the highly successful Huawei Mate60 series.

Out of the 33.2 million shipments 28.7 million devices were 5G-enabled

During September 2023, the domestic market saw the shipment of 33.277 million mobile phones, marking a 59.0% increase compared to the same period last year. Of these, 28.717 million were 5G-enabled devices, exhibiting an even more remarkable year-on-year increase of 90.1%. Notably, 5G phones accounted for 86.3% of total mobile phone shipments in the same period, signifying the growing dominance of 5G technology in the market.

The growth is not confined to the statistical realm alone; market consultation reports corroborate the upward trend. It signifies the revival of the mobile phone market in China after a period of stagnation. The improvement of the foldable smartphones is also capturing consumer interest and driving the desire to upgrade.

Market research firm Counterpoint supports this observation, reporting that China’s smartphone market is in recovery mode. It showcases an average sales increase of 11% in the first four weeks of October 2023. Analysts at Counterpoint anticipate a new “replacement wave” after more than three years, spurred by the recent releases of the iPhone 15 series and Huawei Mate60 series in September.

Like the global smartphone shipment trends, Europe also registered a decline in shipments in the quarter that ended on 30th September 2023. According to a new Counterpoint Research report for Market Monitor Service, smartphone shipments declined 11% YoY in Q3 2023. Major OEMs like Samsung and Apple recorded their worst quarter after 2011 and 2014, respectively.

As per the report, the demand in the Western European market declined by 8%, and Eastern Europe further dipped by 15%. The ongoing economic and geopolitical challenges in the region are the primary reasons behind sluggish sales.

Amid the decline, Samsung maintained its primary position with 32% market share, Apple preceded with 24%, while Realme raked 22% market share. Honor evolved by 8% from the previous year with a 4% market share.

Speaking on the statistics, Research Analyst Harshit Rastogi said, “Q3 2023 saw the lowest Q3 smartphone shipments since 2011. However, some OEMs have managed to gain a foothold in the market, such as Transsion brands TECNO and Infinix (particularly in Russia), while HONOR is doing well in Western Europe. Even as the market shares of top players remain the same, Chinese OEMs are switching ranks among themselves.”

Samsung retained its position with good demand for its foldable in the region; meanwhile, Apple will rake up some sales this quarter with the iPhone 15 series. Xiaomi is facing backlash from some Western European countries due to its presence in the Russian market. It’s market share declined by 13%. Oppo is also losing ground in the European region due to some issues. Surprisingly, Honor, TECNO, and Infinix registered exceptional growth in comparison with the previous year.

Commenting on the new statistics, Associate Director Jan Stryjak said, “While the market continued to decline, major launches like the iPhone 15 series and Samsung’s fifth-generation foldables softened the fall. The rate of decline is slowing and, while we aren’t holding out a return to growth just yet, we are optimistic about a strong end to the year in Q4. Economic conditions continue to be tough, though, and people are holding on to their devices for longer than ever. Therefore, we expect the market to remain muted for the foreseeable future.“

The future growth prospect seems a dream for some unforeseen future in the European smartphone market.

Amid the global slowdown, Apple and Samsung smartphones are still topping the charts in Global Smartphone sales. As per the Counterpoint Research report detailing smartphone shipments in Q2 2023, the Cupertino giant held the first four positions in Global smartphone sales. Meanwhile, the Samsung smartphones’ followed on the remaining positions in the top 10 tally.

Precisely, the Apple iPhone 14 stood at the top with the most sales and is followed by the iPhone 14 Pro Max in second position and the iPhone 14 Pro in third. A couple of years old Apple iPhone 13 managed to hold the 4th position in the global smartphone’s sale chart. Apple managed to outsell other smartphones in Asia and Europe where it gained the most new users.

Apple’s base iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 models also registered positive growth on a YoY basis. Overall, Apple’s share in the top-10 smartphone list shrank marginally in Q2 2023.

Samsung is also not so far behind Apple, the remaining positions in the top-10 list are secured by Smartphones. The affordable Samsung Galaxy A14 managed to secure 5th position in the chart. It is followed by Galaxy A54, Galaxy A14 5G, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy A04e, and Galaxy A34 in respective positions from 5th to 10th, respectively in the list.

Samsung’s affordable A-series managed to garner the most sales across Asia and the Latin American region. These regions accounted for 60% of Galaxy A series sales during Q2 2023. Meanwhile, more premium – the Galaxy S23 Ultra remained popular in the North American and Western European regions. The regions registered 2/3rd of global Galaxy S23 Ultra sales across the globe.

YoY Comparison – Smartphone Sales Q2 2023

Apple iPhone 14 series replaced the iPhone 13 series in the top spots of the list as per YoY comparison. The Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G sales in Q2 2023 are replaced by its predecessor Galaxy S23 Ultra. Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s shrinking market share is also evident as any smartphone from the company failed to secure a place in the top-10 global sales list. Last year, Remdi Note 11 LTE Global secured 10th place.

Both Samsung and Apple are now competing head-to-head at least in the premium segment. However, the Korean giant is still king in the affordable market segment.

According to the latest data from market research firm Counterpoint Research, Huawei has emerged as the standout performer in the second quarter of 2023 in the Chinese smartphone market. Despite an overall decline in sales for major manufacturers in the quarter, Huawei’s sales experienced an exceptional year-on-year growth of 58%.

Huawei’s Exceptional Sales Growth in a Declining Market

The boost in Huawei’s sales can be attributed to the resumption of its regular product release schedule, allowing the company to leverage its well-established brand image and widespread offline distribution channels across top-tier cities. This strategy resulted in a surge in sales after overcoming initial product shortages.

Among other manufacturers, Realme and Apple also achieved positive growth in Q2, while Vivo secured the top position with a market share of 17.7%.

Despite the challenges faced in the first half of 2023, Counterpoint Research predicts a slight decline in China’s smartphone market sales for the entire year. While improvements are expected in the second half compared to the first half, a significant rebound might be challenging due to persistent market challenges.

Huawei’s focus on its flagship series, along with the recent launch of midrange and flagship phones like the Nova 11 series and P60 series, has been instrumental in driving its sales growth. Additionally, the upcoming Mate 60 series, rumored to feature an impressive camera setup, is expected to further boost their sales. US smartphones saw unusually high demand in Q1 2021. The demand was driven by various factors, including the pandemic. But as the pandemic situation is stabilizing, smartphone sales are also declining.

A new report by Counterpoint research reveals that the US smartphone market declined by 6% YoY in Q1, 2022. This data came from the firm’s US Monthly Smartphone Channel Share Tracker.

“While Q1 2022 did see weaker sales compared to last year, this needs to be seen in context. It is not a sign of the market contracting because last year’s Q1 was unusually high due to several factors driving demand,” said Jeff Fieldhack, Research Director with Counterpoint.

Premium device sales dropped post the holiday quarter. Persistent supply bottlenecks impacted both 5G and LTE devices. The tax season sales were also lower as Q1 2021 saw an additional stimulus money bump, as per the report.

Apple dominated the US smartphone market with a 47 percent market share, followed by Samsung with a 28 percent market share and Motorola with a 12 percent market share.

Apple’s iPhone 12 series sales pushed into Q1 2021 due to its staggering launch. This resulted in more premium demand in a typically slow quarter.

Apple’s revenue surpassed $14 billion. iPhone 13 sales accounted for over 80% of total sales in the quarter.

“Looking at Q1 2022, there were still solid performances from Apple and Samsung, with Motorola, Google, TCL and OnePlus seeing YoY increases in volumes due to LG’s exit,” Fieldhack added.

The report also sheds light on smaller manufacturers who are beginning to capture more market share due to LG’s exit. Motorola has seen significant growth this year. It has become the third-largest smartphone brand in the country, with a 12% market share.

OnePlus witnessed a comparatively slower quarter overall as the increased low-end competition resulted in fewer sales.

“There will also be massive network migrations occurring as 2G and 3G sunsets come to fruition this year. This will certainly give a lift to smartphone sales as carriers will need to move millions of subscribers to LTE or, preferably, 5G smartphones,” said Senior Research Analyst, Maurice Klaehne.

Ever since the start of this year, Chinese phone makers have been releasing devices in all segments, whether it be budget, mid-range, or the higher-end flagship segment. The region has seen increased premium phones largely due to the downfall of Huawei. Despite all the flagships and other phones making their way to the market with impressive specs sheets, the smartphone market in China doesn’t seem to show healthy growth. As per a new report, China’s Q1 2022 smartphone sales have dropped by 14% year-on-year.

Counterpoint Research has shared a few numbers that show that the smartphone market in China has been undoing in comparison to previous years. As per the company’s Q1 2022 report for China’s smartphone market share, most of the brands excluding Apple and Honor have shown poor performance as compared to Q1 of last year.

Despite that, in Q1 2022, Vivo stands on the top with a 19.7% market share. Next comes Oppo with an 18% market share and it is followed by the other brands. Honor and Apple are two brands that showed a good increase in Q1 2022 as compared to Q1 2021. Apple’s market share increased from 14.7% to 17.9%, while Honor showed the highest jump from 5.5% to 16.9% market share. That’s an 11.4% increase, the highest on the chart.

This jump by Honor is primarily because of the new Honor 60 and Magic 4 series, as noted by Counterpoint. A part of Apple’s market share increase is likely because Huawei users look at Apple as a premium phone alternative in China.

Coming to Xiaomi, the brand didn’t show any growth, rather it was the opposite with a 0.3% decline. However, Xiaomi is said to pick up the pace with the recent release of its Redmi K50 series. The Redmi 10A is also expected to help the brand in the super-budget segment. That being said, the <$400 segment is expected to show good stability as we move further.

Realme showed a nominal growth with an increase of 0.4%. It appears that Realme’s new models released in Q1 2022 are helping the brand increase its market share.

The Thailand smartphone market has showcased a huge potential for growth after the region recorded a year on year growth of 18 percent in terms of shipments in the first quarter of this year.

According to a Counterpoint Research report, there were multiple factors that supplemented this growth. This included the pent up demand that was carried forward from the final quarter of last year, which paired with an aggressive scheme and offers from smartphone brands and their channel brands, especially in the online mediums. While the region is recovering from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic from 2020, there is a healthy demand for smartphones by the consumers.

As per Senior Research Analyst Glen Cardoza, “The top six brands are aggressively trying to capture more market share but there are other brands at play as well. The declining volumes of Huawei and HONOR, and the upcoming Transsion brands like Infinix and TECNO are all variables that continue to add volatility to this strong smartphone market. Brands like Xiaomi and realme are trying hard to capitalize on their online prowess to improve their presence.”

Notably, the chip shortage has also affected this region as well, with shipments being behind and sales not taking advantage of the full potential of the market. Although, Thailand did see a 49 percent year on year surge in online sales in Q1 2021, with Chinese smartphone manufacturers taking the lead in this channel.

Japan is already attracting the attention of Chinese companies like Xiaomi. Amidst a lot of uncertainty in Q3 2020 due to a second-wave of COVID-19, it has recovered from a dull smartphone sales in Q2. According to the report, smartphone unit sales have crossed the 8 million mark for the first time in 2020. Precisely, it has gone up 10% YoY(Year-over-Year) in Q3 when compared to Q2’s 24% YoY drop.

Some of the serious contributors to the sales include mid-rangers like iPhone SE 2020. And budget devices like Samsung Galaxy A20 and Fujitsu Arrows Be4. Premium smartphones, which usually get the most attention, got overshadowed by the low and mid-range segment thanks to COVID-19. Specifically, iPhone SE 2020 alone makes 26% of the total market share in Q3.

Additionally, sales in Q3 has also opened new opportunities in Japan where the share of sub-$150 phones has grown by 14% YoY in Q3 2020 but devices above $600 have declined to 18%. In terms of companies’ market share, Apple has reportedly lost 5% YoY due to delay in iPhone 12 series launch. Contrary to this, companies like Samsung, OPPO, which launched many phones have an 8% and 5% share respectively.

In spite of the dip, Apple remains the undisputed champion brand of the Japanese market as seen above. However, it no longer retains half the market share like Q3 2019 as companies like Fujitsu, Kyocera hold 6% each, and Sharp, Sony have 11 and 9% share respectively. The contribution of the other small companies is around 16%.

That said, Apple is expected to dominate the next Quarter, i.e, Q4 with iPhone 12‘s sales. Reasons like 5G, the need of replacing older iPhones, and increasing demand will reportedly drive the already strong initial sales forward.

When compared to the previous quarter, the numbers indicate a decline of 15 percent. The country went into a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19, which resulted in the smartphone market tumbling because of closures of physical shops.

Samsung, the leading smartphone brand in the country, managed to retain its position with a market share of 37 percent. It was followed by Apple with a market share of 23 percent and Huawei with 18 percent of the market.

Interestingly, Chinese brand Xiaomi has shown impressive growth in Germany. The company reported 5 percent of the market share in Q2 2020, an increase from 1 percent share in the previous year, and a nearly 250 percent jump in sales.

Because of the pandemic, the smartphone market is now moving from high-end or premium devices to mid-range offerings. The premium segment, which includes devices priced at $800 and above, shark to 7 percent from 19 percent in Q1 2020.

On the other hand, devices priced between $300 to $600 registered growth from 23 percent to 30 percent. This is mainly attributed to the sales of Samsung Galaxy A-series smartphones and Apple iPhone SE 2020.

As per the report, 30 percent are now planning to wait longer than usual for their next smartphone purchase, while 40 percent are planning to cut their budget for future purchases related to smartphones.

Xiaomi India Managing Director and Xiaomi Global Vice President Manu Kumar Jain recently commented that offline inventory issues were largely related to the supply shortage. In response to that, Offline mobile retailers have countered the claim.

The offline smartphone retailers in India are claiming that the company deliberately related inventory of newly launched products and is diverting them to its own channel and e-commerce partners to save margins.

Arvinder Khurana, the national president of All India Mobile Retailer Association (AIMRA) told Economic Times that “Xiaomi promised to provide inventory offline within a week but the situation hasn’t changed in the last few months. They don’t provide inventory of latest models to offline partners and delay it for almost a month and largely give inventory of older models.”

He also added that there’s a price disparity as the company is selling smartphones ₹500 cheaper in the online channel compared to the offline market. The development comes at a time when Xiaomi claims that offline channels will contribute around 50 percent of its overall sales by the end of this year.

This led to Huawei getting banned from using Google’s Android operating system on its Huawei as well as Honor-branded devices. Recently, the U.S. government tightened restrictions on Huawei as well as its subsidiaries.

With the new restrictions, Huawei has been banned from using American companies or technologies for semiconductors. This means that the company can’t manufacture its own Kirin-branded chipsets with the help of American companies or the companies that use American technologies.

TSMC, the contact manufacturer of Huawei for the HiSilicon Kirin chipsets, stopped taking new orders from the company. In the second quarter of this year in China, while Huawei continued dominating the local smartphone market, Apple has seen a surge in demand for iPhones. As per the report, the company has witnessed a 225 percent quarterly growth in sales volume.

The reason is being attributed to price cuts as the Chinese market is slowing recovering from weak demand because of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the quarter that ended in June, Apple sold 13 million units of iPhone in China, reports research firm CINNO.

The numbers represent an increase of four million units compared to the previous quarter. A recent report from Counterpoint Research claims that Apple was the fastest-growing major smartphone brand in China for the second quarter, with 32 percent growth.

At the height of COVID-19, Chinese smartphone sales declined 22 percent in the first quarter. The market is now slowing recovering and research firm CINNO estimates that smartphone sales in China have reached 94 million units in June.

Samsung has confirmed that its next Galaxy Unpacked event will take place on 5th August, where the company is expecting to launch its next-generation Galaxy Note20 series as well as Galaxy Z Fold 2 and a couple of other products.

Smartphone consumers from Spain and Italy are the most affected. Consumers intending to cut their future smartphone purchase budget by 20% or more are highest in Spain (27%) and Italy (25%), followed by the USA (24%). Looking at the current circumstances, we expect this trend will continue until mid-2021.”

A new report from IDC and Counterpoint Research, two well known analytics firms, has revealed that the Indian smartphone market is witnessing a slump. The reports suggest that the sales will fall by 13 to 15 percent due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

India is the world’s second largest smartphone market. Various Chinese OEMs and other major brands in the industry consider it a key market and fight for a better foothold in the region. However, due to the viral outbreak, the local government had to employ a strict and mandatory lockdown that even caused smartphone manufacturing plants to shut down as well. At the moment, there is an economic crisis with salary deductions being a common measure being taken in both the private and government organizations.

Samsung has seen tremendous success with its Galaxy S-series of flagship smartphones so far and the Galaxy S10 launched last year was well-praised and reported good sales numbers for the South Korean giant.

However, the new iteration in the lineup, the Galaxy S20 lineup, isn’t doing good as far as sales are concerned. Earlier this month, we reported that the new smartphone series is witnessing disappointing sales in the U.S. and now another report claims that the phenomenon isn’t limited to the United States.

A report coming from market research firm Omdia claims that Samsung has shipped just 8.2 million units of the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, and S20 Ultra smartphones in the first quarter of the year, i.e. from January 2020 to March 2020.

However, do keep in mind that the smartphone was announced in February this year and went on sale in the month of March. So, the device had been on sale for just three weeks in the first quarter of this year.

While the numbers aren’t that bad for an Android smartphone maker but Samsung is the leading mobile brand globally and had posted impressive numbers for the predecessor Galaxy S10 lineup. The company had sold 10.3 million units of S10 and S10+ in Q1 2019 and adding S10e to the line brings the total to 12.5 million units.

At a time when the global shipments have declined by 13 percent compared to last year for the same period, the Galaxy S20 series have reported a 35 percent decline when compared to its predecessors.

The report reveals that the most popular flagship model from Samsung was the Galaxy S20 Plus with sales of 3.5 million units, which is down from the 5.2 million units the previous generation’s most popular model – the Galaxy S10.

Samsung unveiled its next-generation Galaxy S-series flagship smartphones — Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, and S20 Ultra in February this year. It’s been around two months since the smartphones went on sale.

Now, as per the reports, the new Galaxy S20 series isn’t performing well in terms of sales. They are said to be significantly less popular than its predecessors, at least in the United States as the sales are lagging behind the Galaxy S10 series and Galaxy S9 series at the same number of weeks after launch.

The report coming from M Science reveals that the sales of Galaxy S10 were roughly 400,000 and for Galaxy S9 it was around 500,000 weekly during the second week after the launch. It also adds that the sales consistently maintained 200,000 units weekly throughout the first ten weeks of sales.

On the other hand, the new Galaxy S20 lineup fails to even surpass the 200,000 weekly units sale mark during its best week. The sales have consistently remained below 100,000 mark since the fourth week of sales, although it reported a slight growth in sales last week.

LG has recently revealed its financial report for the Q4 of 2019. In the final quarter, the company saw a massive loss as its mobile division continues to deteriorate in the smartphone industry.

According to the report, the South Korean tech giant saw a loss of over $850 million in Q4 of 2019 as sales of smartphones continued to decline and show little sign of recovering in the near future. LG generated KRW 1.32 trillion in revenue between October and December 2019. The figures translate to roughly 1.12 billion US Dollars, which is a sizable amount, but still noticeably lower than its revenue of 1.41 billion US Dollars in Q4 of 2018.

Furthermore, the mobile division suffered huge setbacks in the final quarter as well, measuring about KRW 332.2 million. Meaning, about 280 million US Dollars was lost during this period of time, which is also higher than the 270 million US Dollars lost in the same quarter of 2018.

Despite LG’s best efforts to reduce cost and operational expenditures, the company is still showing negative growth. This also highlights LG further declining over 2018, where the company lost just 650 million US Dollars in the same quarter. When it comes to global smartphone shipments, Samsung has been dominating the market since quite some time. However, the competition is intense between Apple and Huawei for the second spot.

Last year, for some time, Huawei overtook Apple for the second position in the global smartphone shipments, but Apple reclaimed the position soon after that. But the way Huawei is growing its business, it seems that the company will soon grab the second spot.

Also, the sales of Apple’s iPhones are no match to that of Huawei. According to a report from industry research firm OTR Global, Apple iPhone sales made up just 70 percent of all Huawei handset sales in the first quarter.

As per the report, Apple shipped between 37 million and 42 million iPhones, less than Wall Street predictions of between 40 million and 50 million, a recent investor note shows. Huawei’s financial report for the period claims the company managed to ship over 59 million smartphones, its highest ever first-quarter sales count.

This is largely a result of the declining demand for the iPhone upgrades and the sales of the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max — the third current-generation smartphones, are not as high as the company anticipated. In fact, the older handsets like the iPhone 8 fared better in comparison to the newer models.

According to the research firm Canalys, Apple’s worldwide sales fell 7.3 percent from last year’s third to the fourth quarter. The company will be releasing its first-quarter financials later this month, with forecasts of a revenue tally between $55 billion and $59 billion for the period, an up to 35 percent drop from the $84.3 billion in the final fourth of last year.

The development comes after the company is seeing demand for its recently launched flagship smartphones — Huawei P30 and P30 Pro. When the devices went on sale in China on 11th April, the company sold units worth 200 million yuan in just 10 minutes.

Huawei, the China-based smartphone manufacturer and telecom equipment giant, is currently going through tough times because of the concerns related to the security issues of Huawei’s equipment from western countries.

Even though the company is in the middle of the on-going US-China trade war, it managed to report impressive numbers in terms of smartphone shipments. Huawei’s CEO of Consumer Business, Yu Chengdong, revealed that the company shipped 206 million mobile phones in the year 2018.

As of November 2018, the company’s market share in the premium smartphone category (phones priced above $600) has reached a new height of 12 percent. According to the data released by IDC, Huawei currently ranks third among the top smartphone companies in terms of worldwide shipments with around 14.7 percent market share.

Huawei is just behind Apple, which has grabbed the second position with a 14.9 percent market share. South Korea-based Samsung is still dominating the smartphone market with a 20.8 percent market share. Going forward, Huawei is aiming to grab more smartphone market share.

According to the reports, Huawei has internally set a goal of shipping 250 million smartphones this year, i.e. 2019, which comes down to a growth of around 21 percent. Further, it is aiming to ship over 300 million units of its smartphones in 2020.

The IDC report indicates that the smartphone shipments for the two leading companies are declining. While Samsung witnessed a drop of 8 percent in its shipments with 292 million units shipped, Apple’s shipments fell by 3.2 percent with shipments of 208 million units.

This gives an opportunity to Huawei for grabbing a bigger part of the smartphone market share globally and gain a lead to take the place of Apple. Earlier, Huawei had dethroned Apple for the second position but couldn’t hold on to it for longer.

In China, Huawei is leading the market with 26.4 percent market share, having shipped over 105 million units. It is followed by Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Apple with 19.8%, 19.1%, 13.1%, and 9.1% market share respectively.

In a bid to gain more market share, the company has reportedly made some strategic changes in terms of its operations. JD.com, a China-based online retailer, has released the data related to the New Year’s Day sale. It reveals that during the sale period, Huawei and Honor emerged as the leading smartphone brands.

While Huawei and Honor got the first and second place respectively in terms of smartphone sales, Apple comes at the third position. However, Apple stands first when it comes to the average selling price of the smartphones.

Comparing the average highest selling price, after Apple, the second and third position were given to Honor and Huawei. Xiaomi and Vivo have also made it into the top five list in terms of average selling price.

Coming to the smartphones, Honor 9i was the bestselling model, followed by Honor 7A, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Apple iPhone XR, and Honor 8A. While Meizu Note 8 also made it to the top ten list, Xiaomi was surprisingly absent from the list.

While the Huawei Mate 20 Pro was the leading smartphone when it comes to devices priced over 4,000 Yuan ($582), the Huawei P20 was leading in devices priced between 3,000 Yuan to 3,999 Yuan ($436-$582). In the price range of 2,000 Yuan ($291) to 2,999 Yuan ($436), Honor V10 was the leading device while Vivo Z3 grabbed the top spot in 1,500 Yuan ($218) to 1,999 Yuan ($291) range.

In a new report from Counterpoint, it is found that Global smartphone sales have fallen for the first time up to 3% in the Q3 2018. The global shipments of the smartphones have reduced to 386.8 million units. After growing by an average of 16% from the past five years, the smartphone market is witnessing a slowdown with 1% overall decline this year.

Many reasons can be cited as the root cause of the slowdown. Few of them are the slowing global economy, rising trade tariffs, rising price of phones, etc. Despite Xiaomi and Huawei, all other big brands such as Samsung, Apple, LG and others have witnessed a decline in sales.

“Many markets have already hit a saturation point for new smartphone demand and are dependent on replacement demand,” Counterpoint research director Tom Kang wrote in the report. “Buying a more expensive device results in extending the length of replacement cycles, especially when your earnings are limited.”

In total, Samsung shipped 72.3 million smartphones and ranked first, but it has declined 13% on the basis of year-on-year stats. Apple has maintained a steady increase of 0.1% in the total tally. Huawei, Xiaomi and HMD have witnessed considerable growth. Notably, Huawei shipments rose to 52 million units by 33% on the year-on-year basis. Xiaomi garnered 35.7 million sales with an increase of 25% on a YoY basis.

HMD global aka Nokia has increased its shipments volume by 71%. On the other hand, Motorola and LG both have witnessed a double-digit dip this year. Apple remained steady and sold 170.8 million iPhones which are half a per cent more than the last year.

Some brands are doing well in the international market rather than the domestic. In the same group, Xiaomi has registered a growth of 83% in the international market while it hit 16% in the domestic market.

We can say it’s a mixed bag of ups and downs with overall sales fell by 3% this quarter.

Samsung Mobile has announced that it has set a sales target of 320 million smartphones this year. The Korean giant is reported to be maintaining a similar target to 2017’s figure.

The figure has been sent to its suppliers and also includes those of other devices. For feature phones, Samsung has set a target of 40 million units; tablets are 20 million units; and wearables come last with 5 million units.

It is speculated that the reason for the low numbers is because the market is currently saturated. However, Samsung’s figures are still higher than those of its rivals, Apple and Huawei. The two companies sell about 200 million and 150 million phones per year.

Last year, Samsung was the top phone manufacturer and it will probably retain the title this year. It plans to kick off the year with the Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8+, following it with the entry-level Galaxy J2 (2018) and then the Galaxy S9 and S9+ flagships.

Vice President and Managing Director at Xiaomi India, Manu Kumar Jain, said on Twitter that Xiaomi has shipped 10M+ units globally in the month of October. He also added that this is the second consecutive month to have crossed the 10 million sales mark.

While the company has not revealed any sales figures for specific regions, multiple reports suggest that one of the reasons behind such numbers is the Indian market, which has reportedly accounted for 30 percent of the total devices.

This is mainly because of the festive season sales taking place on Amazon India as well as India’s homegrown Flipkart. As per the reports, Xiaomi sold more than four million smartphones during the festive season in India.

Xiaomi is aiming to ship 90 million smartphones by the end of this year, as revealed by the company’s founder and CEO Lei Jun. With two more months to go in the year, there is a possibility that the company may achieve the target.

In order to achieve its yearly target, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer needs to ship 30 million smartphones in the fourth quarter. With 10 million shipments in October, it now needs to ship 20 million units in the next two months.

According to the estimates by Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi holds a 22 percent market share in India — the world’s second-largest smartphone market.

To date, the strongest year for Xiaomi in terms of shipments has been 2015, when it shipped 70 million devices. However, for that year, the company’s target was to ship 80 million devices.

In order to stay ahead of competitors, Xiaomi took a series of strategic steps, including increasing production capacity and focusing on advanced technologies. It is now putting more efforts on research and development of better devices.

Besides online flash sales, the company has now started focusing on establishing its presence in the offline space as well in order to drive higher sales. Recently, the company launched 20 new Mi Stores in China, reaching its goal of opening over 200 Mi Stores in China this year.

Xiaomi has embarked upon a similar offline expansion plan in India too and has plans for setting up over 100 Mi Stores in India in the next two years.

Gartner recently revealed its new report for Smartphone Sales to End Users in Q1 2016 and the report gives us some interesting insights about the market status worldwide. So, unlike some other reports which gives us the shipment numbers, this is the actual number of units sold to end customers, which should give us a better picture of the market standings.

There are a few changes in the top smartphone vendors in the first quarter of this year, and it is not surprising that three Chinese smartphone manufacturers have got into the top 5 list, clearly showing their dominance in the market. Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO have made it to the list for first quarter, but what’s really surprising is that OPPO is now above Xiaomi in terms of smartphone sales worldwide.

According to the new report, OPPO now sits in the fourth position in terms to total smartphone sales in Q1 2016. The company sold 16,112,600 smartphones in the earlier quarter, which is comfortably higher than Xiaomi’s 15,048,000 units sold in the same time period. What’s really impressive is the company’s growth rate. Last year, in the same time period, OPPO had sold just 6,585,100 phones, which means this year it marked a growth of a staggering 144.6%! At a time, when smartphone vendors are struggling to increase sales and market share, this is a tremendous achievement.

On the other hand, Xiaomi’s growth has remained relatively stagnant. It managed to increase smartphone sales by just 2% as compared to the same quarter last year. This is the main reason why OPPO could overtake Xiaomi in the previous quarter.

The report also reveals that Huawei did pretty well in the first quarter of this year. With a market share of 8.3%, this Chinese giant is comfortably ahead of OPPO and Xiaomi. It sold 28,861,000 smartphones in the first quarter, which is much higher than what it sold in Q1 2015. The company is slowly reducing its gap with Apple and it looks like Huawei is on the path (although still a few years away) of reaching the top.

In case you remember, Huawei CEO, Richard Yu had revealed that the company aims to overtake both Apple and Samsung in the next five years, and if it manages to sustain such high growth, this doesn’t look so impossible now. But despite its growth at this level, there’s still a long way to go, since Samsung sold a good 81,186,900 units in the first quarter, which is nearly three times of what Huawei sold in the same period.

Another interesting piece of information revealed by the report is the increasing gap between Android and iOS. Android’s market share grew from 78.8% in Q1 2015 to 84.1% in Q1 2016. On the other hand, iOS lost its market share in the past one year, going down from 17.9% to 14.8%. Windows, Blackberry and other operating systems hardly get 1% share of the market all together. Clearly shows the dominance of Android, and Apple to a certain extent.

The two Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Huawei and ZTE, has posted positive performance in the latest financial statements. Both companies has posted the big gains from their smartphone sales.

ZTE, the company based in Shenzhen is finally able to turn things around its financial performance during 2013 with a profit of $218 million USD.

According to foreign media, one of the key ZTE revival was started aggressively in the development of mobile phones during 2013. ZTE is working with Microsoft, Intel, and Mozilla to develop a smartphone.

In the last year, ZTE has also become the first brand to sell smartphones based on Firefox operating system and have cooperation with eBay for sale.

ZTE’s position in the smartphone market is still less than the Samsung and Apple. In 2013, ZTE was get ranked in fifth position, up from eighth place in 2012 to the global smartphone market share.

On the other hand, Huawei Technologies Ltd also recorded gains throughout 2013. Rose 34.4% to $3.38 billion USD compared to the previous year.

The support the Huawei during 2013 stood at $38.45 billion USD revenue. Huawei income markets supplied from China, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Huawei’s business in the network segment grew 4% which is about  $26.78 billion USD, contributing around 70% to the total turnover. Operating profit of the company during 2013 reached $4.68 billion USD.

Huawei is known as the second-largest number of players in the world for telecommunications equipment, they’ve recently invested heavily in cloud and mobile computing. In mobile business, Huawei became the third-largest player last year.

Companies that are in trouble over the wiretapping case seeks to focus targeting revenue to grow 10% and reach total sales of approximately $70 billion USD in upcoming 2018.
