January proved to be a busy month for smartphone launches. Most of the announcements were mid-range devices, like the Realme 16 Pro series and the Honor Power 2, but we also saw a few flagships, including the Honor Magic 8 RSR and the RedMagic 11 Air. If you missed any of the January launches, we covered them all here.

If January is any indication, 2026 is going to be a packed year for smartphones. So we decided to make a month-by-month look at some of the most anticipated devices expected to launch this year.

February

Samsung Galaxy A-series

Samsung is expected to kick off February with new entries in its Galaxy A lineup, likely including the Galaxy A57 and Galaxy A37. Both devices have appeared in certifications and benchmarks, revealing key details. 

The Galaxy A57 is rumored to feature an Exynos 1680 chipset, an AMOLED display, a 5,000 mAh battery, and a triple rear camera setup led by a 50 MP sensor. The A37 could pack an Exynos 1480 chip, the same AMOLED display, and a 5,000 mAh battery.

Galaxy S26 series

Later in February, Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra. Reports suggest the company won’t radically redesign the series this year, but will focus on bringing display refinements, upgraded cameras, and newer chipsets, depending on the region.

Notably, the S26 series may introduce a new Privacy Display feature and adopt a dual-chip strategy, offering both Exynos and Snapdragon variants.

Google Pixel 10a

Google announced the Pixel 10 series back in August 2025, but the company has yet to introduce the affordable Pixel 10a. According to reports, February could be the month when the company does so. 

It is said to feature a 6.3-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 60Hz–120Hz refresh, Tensor G4 chipset, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, and a 5,100 mAh battery.

Camera-wise, it’s expected to sport a 48 MP primary lens, a 13 MP ultrawide lens, and a 13 MP front camera.

March / April

Vivo X300 Ultra and Oppo Find X10 Ultra

March could bring two of 2026’s most high-end Android flagships: the Vivo X300 Ultra and Oppo Find X9 Ultra. Both are expected to feature Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processors, 6.8-inch 2K AMOLED displays at 120 Hz, Android 16 with custom skins, and roughly 7,000 mAh batteries with fast charging.

The differences are, Vivo X300 Ultra is rumored to include a 200 MP main sensor, a 200 MP telephoto lens with gimbal stabilization, a 50 MP ultrawide camera, and a 50 MP front camera. 

Meanwhile, the Find X9 Ultra is likely to come with two 200 MP sensors (primary and mid-telephoto), a 50 MP periscope telephoto lens with 10× optical zoom, and a 50 MP ultrawide camera.

OnePlus 15T

Moving on, OnePlus is also expected to launch the 15T in March or April. As with previous “T” models, the focus will likely be on refining existing hardware.

According to leaks, it will be a compact 6.32-inch smartphone with 1.5K resolution with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The camera setup may be dual-lens only with a 50 MP Sony IMX906 or 200 MP Samsung HP5 main sensor and a 50 MP Samsung JN5 telephoto lens.

Under the hood, the 15T should feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, LPDDR5X RAM, UFS 4.1 storage, a 7,500 mAh battery, and support for 100W wired and wireless fast charging.

August

Google Pixel 11 series

August could see Google back in the headlines with the Pixel 11. The new lineup will possibly include the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, and a foldable Pixel variant.

Rumors suggest all models will have AMOLED displays and run on the new Tensor G6 chip built on TSMC’s 2nm process. 

The Pixel 11 series is also expected to leverage AI to offer up to 100× zoom on photos and videos. The foldable Pixel details are scarce for the time being. 

September

Apple iPhone 18 Pro and foldable iPhone

Apple has a consistent launch schedule for iPhones, so no surprises here: the iPhone 18 series is expected to launch in September. However, the company could make some changes this year. 

First, Apple is rumored to release only the Pro models this year, whereas the vanilla iPhone 18 might debut in 2027. Second, 2026 could be the year Apple finally introduces the iPhone Fold.

The foldable device won’t be about chasing trends; it’s more likely to focus on durability, software polish, and ecosystem integration. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro should feature incremental upgrades in cameras, performance, and iOS refinements.

Xiaomi 18 series
Xiaomi is expected to launch the 18 series around the same time with Pro and Ultra models. The series may continue Xiaomi’s recent innovations, such as rear displays, improved cameras, and faster charging. Meanwhile, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is one of the confirmed generational upgrades. 

October

Vivo X400 / Oppo Find X10 series
While details are still emerging, rumors suggest Vivo and Oppo could launch their next flagship lines in October. Both are likely to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 chipset.

What else to watch

Of course, these are not the only smartphones to launch in 2026. These are just the big headline devices, whereas 2026 will also bring plenty of mid-range and niche launches throughout the year.

Looking at the picture shared by @Brick_Fish, the Xperia 10 VII can be seen with just the basic documentation.

This could be an isolated incident or a hint towards a bleak possibility. Keep in mind that Sony isn’t a major player in the smartphone market, only selling its devices in select regions. On the other hand, this has the potential of becoming a new trend in the industry with over smartphone makers making a similar move in a few years. If this does end up happening, brands would likely use the “sustainability” argument once again.

Apple is a great example of this, as it was the first to ditch the charging brick, and even recently removed the USB cables from its AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3. While this would help avoid more electronic garbage making their way to the landfills, customers might opt for cheaper alternatives that won’t last as long, leading to more waste over a longer period.

But before you jump on AliExpress or a grey market seller’s website, there are a few critical things you should consider, some of which can turn your dream device into a paperweight.

Not all smartphones function smoothly across global networks. Manufacturers often tailor their models for specific regions, causing variations in supported cellular bands. For example, Chinese variants may lack crucial LTE or 5G bands required in India, Europe, or North America. This mismatch can lead to slower data speeds, weak indoor signal, or even complete lack of service in certain locations.

Before buying, users should check the device’s supported bands against their carrier’s network. This information is usually available on the manufacturer’s website or trusted third-party databases. Incompatible network bands can turn a high-end phone into a Wi-Fi-only device.

He claims that the recent silicon batteries on smartphones that are pushing the boundaries of battery density are merely the tip of the spear. Soon, devices with 7,000mAh battery packs or higher will become a lot more common. This trend is expected to kick off by the end of this year, with the initial wave likely dropping in China first.

In other words, the wider release in the global market could arrive sometime next year. Due to the limitations of the current silicon batteries, companies are pushing their R&D teams to experiment with new materials and shapes. So smartphones with batteries larger than 7,000mAh could also be the new standard very soon. In a couple of years, we might see devices push the limits with 10,000mAh cells as well, which is something we’ve typically seen with either concept or brick-like rugged phones.

A recent leak revealed that the Honor Magic 8 Pro could debut with a 7,000mAh+ battery pack. Meanwhile, Xiaomi is working on the Redmi Turbo 5 Pro, which may pack a battery that is larger than 8,000mAh. With silicon carbide battery tech, these models might not see added thickness. A great example is the rumored Honor X70 that is expected to pack a huge 8,300mAh battery despite measuring around 7.9mm.

We see a feature gain momentum in the smartphone space almost every year. In 2023, mid-range phones embraced the return of telephoto cameras, and 2024 saw AI dominate the conversation. Manufacturers started cramming AI features—whether useful or not—into phones across every price bracket, branding them as the next big thing.

In 2024, there is another feature quietly made its way into budget phones. While it hasn’t reached trend-worthy status yet, I believe it could become a big deal in the next couple of years, if not by 2025. Enter the IP69 rating.

IP69 is an industrial-grade certification for water and dust resistance that is above the now-common IP68. On paper, it sounds like a no-brainer—after all, who wouldn’t want their phone to be tougher? But does it really make sense for budget phones?

What Does IP69 Mean?

Before getting into the meat of the matter, let’s first understand what IP69 certification means. As you might know, “IP” stands for “Ingress Protection,” a standardized measure of how well a device withstands intrusion from solids and liquids. 

And in IP69, the first digit, “6,” indicates that the device is completely dust-tight. The second digit, “9,” indicates the device’s ability to withstand close-range high-pressure, high-temperature water jets (ranging from 80 to 100 bar) and steam cleaning.

To achieve an IP69 rating, devices must undergo additional and more intensive testing compared to IP68. The high-pressure water jet test involves subjecting the device to powerful water jets from multiple angles and distances. 

The device’s enclosure should prevent water ingress and safeguard the internal components. Additionally, the steam cleaning test involved in IP69 simulates intense cleaning conditions to ensure the device remains impervious to high-temperature steam.

Differences between IP68 and IP69

Now, you might be thinking that if a device has an IP69 rating, it automatically inherits the features of IP68. But that’s not entirely true.

While both ratings share the “6” suffix, which means the device’s enclosure is dust-tight, the “8” in IP68 and the “9” in IP69 represent different types of water protection.

IP68 devices are capable of withstanding immersion beyond 1 meter in water for a specified time (usually 30 minutes to 1 hour). This makes them ideal for underwater applications. On the other hand, IP69 devices are designed to endure high-pressure water jets and steam cleaning, but they may not be suitable for prolonged submersion. 

This difference explains why some devices, like the Oppo A3 Pro (China), carry both IP68 and IP69 ratings.

Adding an IP69 rating introduces extra engineering and manufacturing costs, potentially driving up the price. For a feature that might not align with the average user’s needs, this inclusion could come across as unnecessary.

That said, not all budget phone users fit the same mold. Some may specifically need durability over other features. For example, someone working outdoors in dusty or wet conditions may find the IP69 certification an invaluable addition. Here, it could provide a competitive edge for brands targeting a niche audience.

Moreover, many budget phone buyers already use protective cases to shield their devices. These cases often offer adequate dust and water resistance, albeit not to the IP69 standard. The question then becomes: would a built-in IP69 rating significantly change their experience?

Interestingly, the push for higher IP ratings on budget phones aligns with broader industry trends. As the high-end market saturates, brands are looking for ways to differentiate their offerings in lower price brackets. 

Features once exclusive to flagship models, such as AMOLED screens and fast charging, are now commonplace in mid-range and budget phones. The IP69 rating could be the next feature to follow this trickle-down path.

A recent report by The Economic Times exposes a concerning trend in India’s online smartphone market – a significant portion of phones sold online are ending up in the grey market. Trade bodies allege that as much as 80% of online-exclusive smartphones are being diverted by aggregators who exploit loopholes to buy them in bulk and resell them at marked-up prices.

Tax Losses and Counterfeit Risks: The Dark Side of India’s Online Smartphone Market

These aggregators, acting as wholesalers, use hundreds of user accounts to bypass online retailers’ purchase limitations and acquire popular models in bulk. This creates artificial stock shortages on e-commerce platforms, frustrating legitimate customers. The aggregators then sell these phones to retailers across states at inflated prices, who can further exploit the limited online availability to justify even higher markups.

This diversion has a two-fold negative impact. Firstly, it leads to government revenue loss due to tax evasion. Aggregators often purchase these phones using business accounts, allowing them to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on the 18% GST paid. However, when they resell these phones at a higher price through unofficial channels, the additional profit escapes GST taxation. Industry estimates suggest this could be a potential $600 million GST rebate fraud.

Secondly, consumers are left vulnerable. By purchasing from unauthorized sellers, they risk receiving counterfeit products or facing warranty issues down the line. Additionally, they miss out on exclusive deals and offers often available through authorized online retailers.

The OnePlus 12 was launched in China this week, but the hype and sentiment for the device within the tech circles of Chinese social media has been rather weak, despite the device sporting upgraded internals over last year’s OnePlus 11.

As one Chinese influencer pointed out, the hype for the OnePlus 12 was rather high in China right before the launch event, with many Chinese OnePlus fans hoping that the OnePlus 12 would start at 3298 CNY (competing with the Redmi K70 Pro). But when it was officially revealed that the OnePlus 12 would start at 4299 CNY (602 USD) for the base model, fans were sceptical about whether the OnePlus 12 was still worth the purchase despite the price hike. 

To contextualise the matter, 4299 is a nearly 10% price hike from the OnePlus 11 at 3999 CNY, and since the OnePlus 11 256GB is 799 USD in the global market, the OnePlus 12 is expected to launch at 859 USD onwards when it comes to global markets in January 2024.

To add salt to the wound, the starting price of the OnePlus 12 is also the most expensive out of all the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 flagships launched so far. Here is a table to show OnePlus’ pricing against its competitors such as Xiaomi, iQOO and Meizu.

As news of Huawei reportedly dropping Android app support on its HarmonyOS devices starting next year has spread to the general public in China, job demand for software developers who can develop apps that can run natively on HarmonyOS has surged in the country.

First reported by ITHome, the Chinese tech publication noticed an uptick in job listings recruiting for app developers who are skilled in developing mobile applications that have native support for HarmonyOS devices such as the Huawei Mate 60 Pro.

Most recently, this week 3 well-renowned tech companies, Baidu, WPS and Flight Manager, have posted job vacancies that require applicants to have software development experience in HarmonyOS-related mobile applications.

Most notably, Chinese search engine giant, Baidu, has launched a recruitment listing with the job position “HarmonyOS App R&D Engineer” in its Baidu Search Engine Product R&D Department. The role will be mainly responsible for the research and development of a Baidu app that will be native to HarmonyOS. Priority will be given to job applicants who have 1 year or more of work experience and familiarity with HarmonyOS application development languages ​​​​such as ArkTS or Java / Development languages ​​and technologies such as Android. 

Besides Baidu, Kingsoft WPS is also hiring new senior product managers for its WPS Office service which requires “proficiency in HarmonyOS system development tools”. This is because the new senior product manager job roles are delegated with the responsibility of implementing and improving native HarmonyOS support into its existing WPS Office suite.

Leading this resurgence, Huawei has made a remarkable comeback, with a staggering 90% increase in sales year-on-year, largely credited to its Mate 60 series. These handsets, notably the Mate 60 Pro, have gained attention for their advanced, locally produced 5G chips—a huge achievement amidst U.S. sanctions. This surge in Huawei’s sales is not just confined to its new releases; there’s a ripple effect boosting its other models as well.

Xiaomi, another key player, reported a 33% jump in sales within the same period, driven by the launch of its Xiaomi 14 flagship smartphone. This model quickly became a sensation, selling over a million units in less than two weeks and dominating sales during the Singles’ Day shopping festival. The brand’s robust performance is further evident in its record-breaking Singles’ Day sales, surpassing 22.4 billion yuan in revenue across various online platforms.

Honor, originally a Huawei spin-off, also showed a solid performance with a 10% rise in sales. These gains by domestic brands contrast with Apple’s 12% decline in sales in China during this period. Despite launching the iPhone 15, Apple hasn’t replicated its previous success in China, as observed in the initial sales data.

This trend underlines a broader narrative in China’s smartphone market, poised to exit an extended period of stagnation. Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, is continuing to expand its product lineup to maintain this title. For instance, the company has recently begun working on launching 4G and 5G variants of the Galaxy A15 in Europe. Additionally, the development of the Galaxy S24 series, expected to be introduced in February 2024, is progressing rapidly. However, the 2024 plans of the South Korean tech giant go beyond this. Competition in the smartphone market remains fierce in 2023, just as it does every year. Samsung, which currently holds the top position, is expected to ship between 220 million and 230 million units this year. However, the company isn’t as content with this scenario as one might think. As you may know, the Galaxy series spans a wide range from entry-level to flagship devices. Most of the models sold by the company fall into the entry and mid-range segments.

To make matters worse, the global smartphone market has also seen a decline in recent years. While many of you might assume this is just a normal decrease following the increase during the pandemic, unfortunately, the situation is not quite that simple. In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, global smartphone shipments reached 1.4 billion units. However, shipments have since dropped to 1.2 billion units, and it is expected to take several years for the market to rebound.

Samsung’s solution is to somehow sell more phones. That’s why the company has set a goal to ship 250 million smartphones in 2024. The main objective of the tech giant is to boost the sales of flagship models in order to restore profitability, which has dropped by 70%. In line with this, the company has also raised its target for foldable phone shipments in 2024 to 2 million units, up from the previous target of 1.6 million units.

Samsung currently holds a market share of around 20%. However, the company is also confronting growing competition from Chinese rivals like the resurgent Huawei and Xiaomi. In other words, it’s not an easy task. It remains to be seen whether Samsung will be able to meet its shipment targets for 2024.

HyperOS is not the only new thing on the Xiaomi 14 series, because the Xiaomi 14 series is also the first Xiaomi flagship smartphones to sport Leica’s high-end Summilux lenses. And today, Xiaomi has officially revealed the camera specs of its Xiaomi 14 in collaboration with Leica.

As shown in Xiaomi’s official announcement on Chinese social media Weibo, the Xiaomi 14 will be sporting a Leica VARIO-SUMMILUX 1:1.6-2.2/14-75 ASPH camera setup on the back. Simplifying the abbreviation, it means that the Xiaomi 14 is equipped with an aspherical lens, and is capable of taking photos and videos from the wide aperture of f/1.6 to f/2.2, in distances from 14 mm to 75 mm with Leica DLSR-level quality. 

Speaking in more mainstream terms, the Xiaomi 14’s camera setup has a standard main lens (23 mm), an ultra-wide angle lens with a 0.6x view (14 mm), and a telephoto camera capable of 3.2x optical zoom (75 mm). The device is now upgraded to a variable aperture of between f/1.6 and f/2.2, improved from last year’s f/1.8 to f/2.2.

For comparison, the table below showcases the main Leica-rated camera quality of the Xiaomi 14 vs the Xiaomi 13.

The Xiaomi 14 will be Xiaomi’s first flagship smartphone to feature Leica’s premium Summilux lenses, which are normally found on Leica’s digital and DSLR cameras for above 2000 USD. Xiaomi says that the company’s upcoming Xiaomi 14 flagships are the next big step in mobile photography.

And from an official teaser announcement today, the Chinese brand hopes that its new operating system will be the “centre of your universe”.

HyperOS is Xiaomi’s newest operating system, and the operating system is expected to be Xiaomi’s first cross-platform operating system that will be able to operate on not only the brand’s smartphones, but also its tablets, smartwatches and even the brand’s upcoming electric vehicle.

Teased by Xiaomi executive, Cici Wei on Weibo, Xiaomi’s upcoming HyperOS aims to be the centre of your universe (metaphorically).

To quote, “HyperOS is one of the most user-oriented operating systems that Xiaomi has ever created. We have been secretly developing the operating system over the past 7 years, with our brand’s 13 years of expertise condensed into the work. HyperOS will be a system that can connect the user, the car, and the home, serving its purpose as the centre of your technological universe.”

Xiaomi’s HyperOS will be launching this October 26 Thursday 7 pm (GMT +8) in China. The brand is expected to announce its latest Xiaomi 14 series of premium smartphones in collaboration with Leica and the brand’s newest operating system, HyperOS at the launch event.

Ahead of the launch of the Xiaomi 14 series launch this week, Xiaomi had teased their upcoming Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro will feature Leica’s Summilux camera lenses, which are more premium and better than the previous Leica Summicron lenses found on the Xiaomi 13 series and Xiaomi 12S series. For context, a Leica Summilux-M 35 f/1.4 lens costs 3895 USD on Leica’s website.

Although the Xiaomi 14 series may be Xiaomi’s first smartphones to feature the Leica Summilux lenses, the Leica Summilux lenses can already can be found on smartphones since April 2017. So what smartphone brand was the first to feature “Leica Summilux lenses”? That brand is none other than Huawei, and the first smartphone to feature the premium Leica Summilux lens is the Huawei P10 Plus.

Huawei P10 Plus

The Huawei P10 Plus is Huawei’s best smartphone released in early 2017. Powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 960, the smartphone has smooth and fast performance to last you the whole day with a 3750 mAh battery alongside support for Huawei’s SuperCharge. 

But of course, the highlight here was the cameras. Both the phones featured a 20MP + 12MP Leica certified dual camera setup at the back. However, the larger Huawei P10 Plus comes with a wider f/1.8 aperture instead of f/2.2 on the standard P10, and the P10 Plus has a more premium Leica SUMMILUX-H F1.8 lens, while the P10 featured the SUMMARIT-H F2.2 lens, the same one found on the Huawei Mate 9, P9 and P9 Plus.

After 2017

After the launch of the Huawei P10 Plus, Huawei started using the Leica Summilux lenses in its premium smartphones ever since, starting with the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro launched in late 2017. The full list of Huawei’s Leica lenses used over the years is as shown below.

The Huawei P20 Pro was a particular breakthrough for Huawei, as it was the world’s first triple rear camera smartphone, and it earned first VARIO-SUMMILUX-H for Huawei. Then in late 2018, Huawei Mate 20 Pro was announced as Huawei’s first flagship to have an ultra-wide angle 16mm equivalent lens, earning the lens title of VARIO-SUMMILUX-H 1:1.8-2.4/16-80 ASPH.

The Huawei P30 Pro could reach up to a 125mm equivalent lens with its periscope zoom lens, and then the P40 Pro+ in 2020 broke the record with its 10 times periscope optical zoom lens, giving a 240mm equivalent lens quality on a smartphone. 

In 2021, Huawei ended its partnership with Leica with the P50 and P50 Pro, the last Huawei smartphones in collaboration with Leica. Huawei then utilised its own in-house XMAGE camera branding solution, from the Huawei Mate 50 series onwards in 2022. 

In turn, Xiaomi has carried on the torch of premium smartphones in collaboration with Leica, and the brand is expected to announced to launch its latest Xiaomi 14 series of premium smartphones with Leica certified cameras this week in China. After leaks about the weight of the Xiaomi 14, another leak about the Xiaomi 14 has surfaced, this time from an offline retailer in China.

Via Chinese social media Weibo, several users on the platform are sharing around a leaked list of memory and colour options for the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. The leaked list is reportedly obtained from an offline 3rd party retailer in China that will be selling the upcoming Xiaomi 14 series of smartphones in the country.

From the list, the standard Xiaomi 14 will be available in 4 colours: Black, White, Green and Pink. It will be available in 3 storage options, which are respectively 12 GB + 256 GB, 16 GB + 512 GB, and 16 GB + 1 TB.

Meanwhile the Xiaomi 14 Pro will be available in 3 colours only, which are Black, White and Green. It will also be available in 3 storage options, which are respectively 12 GB + 256 GB, 16 GB + 512 GB, and 16 GB + 1 TB.

However, the list of models sold is only applicable to offline retailers, Xiaomi could also release online-exclusive colours for the Xiaomi 14 for a limited time after launch, similar to last year’s online-exclusive colours of the Xiaomi 13.

As the hype for the highly anticipated Xiaomi 14 builds up, a Chinese influencer in the tech circle yesterday accidentally shared and revealed the weight of Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship.

In a deleted Weibo post yesterday, Chinese tech influencer, Chen Zhen, went to the Chinese social media site Weibo to share two cryptic photos showing the weight of an unannounced Android smartphone that will be launching soon in China. Based on the influencer’s post history, it can be assumed that this is supposedly one of the Xiaomi 14 devices, most likely the standard Xiaomi 14. 

The influencer was also one of the culprits last year who leaked details of the Xiaomi 13 flagship days before the launch. As for the deleted Weibo post, it shows that the upcoming device will be available in two weight options: 199.2 g and 194.2 g, supposedly hinting that the device will be available in a PU leather back option and a ceramic glass back option like last year’s Xiaomi 13.

For a comparison of the weights of the upcoming Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 13, we created a table below showing the weight difference.

As shown above, the Xiaomi 14 is heavier than the Xiaomi 13 by about 10 grams. The increased premium heft in weight could be due to a larger camera sensor, a bigger battery or probably the Leica Summilux lens added to the device. Or it could be all of the above and maybe some extra features that will add weight to the build.

The company is now partnering with Batteries Plus, a specialty battery retailer with over 700 locations in North America, to offer in-warranty repairs for Galaxy devices. This means that Galaxy owners can take their devices to any Batteries Plus location for a repair, and it will be covered by Samsung’s warranty.

This is a significant expansion of Samsung’s repair options, as it will make it much easier for Galaxy owners to get their devices repaired, especially in rural areas where there may not be a Samsung authorized service center nearby. In addition to offering in-warranty repairs, Batteries Plus will also be able to repair Galaxy foldables, such as the Galaxy Z Fold series.

This is the first time that Samsung has authorized an independent service provider to repair its foldable devices. Samsung says that it wants to make it as easy as possible for customers to get their Galaxy devices repaired, and this expansion will make it much easier for customers to do so.

After the successful launch of the Xiaomi 13T in global markets, the highly anticipated Xiaomi 14 series is expected to launch in its home market in China by this month. And with a surprise leak earlier today that fully showed off the specs, we also now know the launch date and even launch prices of the Xiaomi next-generation flagship, the Xiaomi 14 from a newer leak.

From the newly leaked poster, the Xiaomi 14 is launching on October 27, 2023 (Friday), and will go on sale in China from October 31, 2023 (Tuesday) onwards. The pricing of the Xiaomi 14 is as follows:

• 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage – 3999 CNY (547 USD)
• 12 GB RAM + 512 GB storage – 4299 CNY (588 USD)
• 16 GB RAM + 512 GB storage – 4599 CNY (630 USD)
• 16 GB RAM + 1 TB storage – 4999 CNY (684 USD)

Gathered from Chinese Xiaohongshu user 5641400486, the leaked poster above reveals the Xiaomi 14 with a large square camera module housing three Leica-branded sensors. The setup is said to comprise a 50MP OV50H main lens paired with a 50MP ultra-wide and a 50MP telephoto unit. 

The Xiaomi 14 is to launch with a 6.44-inch C8 OLED 12-bit display bearing a 1.5K resolution. It will offer a 120Hz refresh rate, 2,800 nits peak brightness, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ support. The device is tipped to have dual-stereo speakers, an IP68-certified body, and an IR Blaster. 

Under the hood, the leak reveals that the Xiaomi 14 will be equipped with the unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor coupled with LPDDR5X RAM and “UFS 4.0 Enhanced” storage. It will also feature a large VC liquid cooling system for heat dissipation. The upcoming smartphone will reportedly be backed by a 4,600mAh battery unit with support for 90W wired, 50W wireless, and 10W reverse wireless charging.

If you’ve used an Android smartphone before, high chances are that your smartphone is either powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon or MediaTek Dimensity processor. But recently, there’s a third player slowing growing into the smartphone space, and their name is UNISOC, with their UNISOC 5G SoC (System-on-a-Chip) for Android smartphones.

UNISOC, formerly known as Spreadtrum, is a Chinese fabless semiconductor company headquartered in Shanghai which produces chipsets for Android smartphones. UNISOC chipsets have passed the validation of more than 260 carriers from 133 countries worldwide. Some of their high-profile customers for purchasing their processors include HONOR, realme, vivo, Samsung, Motorola, Hisense and ZTE for their smartphones.

Out of their entire lineup currently available, in this article, we’ll be comparing whether UNISOC’s four 5G smartphone processors can compete with the big boys in the market, which are known as MediaTek and Qualcomm respectively. 

UNISOC has four notable 5G smartphone processors, which are the UNISOC T750, T760, T770, and T820. One of these 4 processors can be listed as a Tier C performing processors, whereas the other remaining 3 can be viewed as C+ performing processors.

Tier C: Low Performance Processors

Starting off with the only Tier C processor from UNISOC is the UNISOC T750. It comes with 5G connectivity,  2 ARM Cortex A76 CPU performance cores and 6 ARM Cortex A55 CPU efficiency cores. The GPU under the hood is the ARM Mali-G57 MP2 which is equivalent in performance to the ARM Mali G57 MC2, and the Qualcomm Adreno 618. 

As seen above, the UNISOC T750 is approximately equivalent to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 found on the Samsung Galaxy A71 (2019) or the MediaTek Dimensity 6080 found on devices like the Redmi Note 13 5G and Redmi Note 11S 5G. However, manufactured on the newer TSMC 6nm process, the UNISOC T750 has several benefits over the Snapdragon such as better performance and better power efficiency.

The UNISOC T750 was released in May 2023 and is expected to arrive in Android devices by 2023 Q4.

Tier C+: Better Low Performance Processors

Next are the 3 Tier C+ processors from UNISOC, which are respectively the UNISOC T760, T770, and T820. All 3 feature the same CPU core configuration which 4 ARM Cortex A76 CPU performance cores, and 4 ARM Cortex A55 CPU efficiency cores, which is actually the same core configuration as the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile processor found on the OnePlus 7 Pro, and Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro (Redmi K20 Pro). 

However, where these 3 UNISOC processors differ from the Snapdragon 855 is their GPU. Powering the T760, T770 and T820 is the ARM Mali G57 MP4 GPU, which is much behind the Adreno 640 on the Snapdragon 855, and closer to the Adreno 620 on the Snapdragon 765. Still the 4+4 CPU configuration allows the UNISOC processors to be ahead of its competitors by providing a flagship-type CPU core configuration at an affordable price despite the underpowered GPU.

The UNISOC T760, T770 and T820 can be found in devices like the Hisense P50 5G, ZTE Blade A73 5G, and the recently released ZTE Nubia Neo 5G, the company’s budget gaming smartphone from Nubia.

In conclusion, UNISOC processors are not useless, and in fact, they are quite underrated at the price that they are offered. UNISOC’s small portfolio of 5G smartphone processors is not competitive with the high-end processors from MediaTek and Qualcomm. However, at an affordable price, the UNISOC processors still have a place for “better than expected” performance in low-end Android smartphones.

After announcing the world’s thinnest foldable smartphone back in July 2023, Honor is rumoured to bring innovation to the foldable smartphone space once again this week with its leaked upcoming announcement of the Honor Magic Vs 2 in China.

The news comes from the popular Chinese tipster, Digital Chat Station on Weibo, whereby in their latest post, they share industry insider info that Honor is preparing to announce the Honor Magic Vs 2, the company’s next flagship book-style foldable smartphone, in a surprise launch event in China this week.

According to the Weibo post, the Honor Magic Vs 2 is claimed to be even thinner and lighter than its predecessor, the Honor Magic V2, and much ahead of the foldable competition (Samsung, Oppo, Motorola) in terms of ergonomics and pocketability. The Honor Magic Vs 2 is said to feature a more premium build with rare earth metal magnesium alloy sides instead of the aluminium found on more conventional premium smartphones of 2023.

Honor CEO, Zhao Ming also mentioned recently that the smartphone manufacturer is looking to unveil more tech products that are beyond the imagination of humans, with one of them being foldables. For context, Honor released the world’s thinnest foldable – the Honor Magic V2 back in July 2023, weighing in at only 231g, which is lighter than the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max at 240g. The Honor Magic V2 also features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, up to 1TB of storage and a large 5,000mAh battery on the device with support for 66W fast wired charging.

If you were a smartphone enthusiast around the 2010s, Mediatek-powered Android smartphones had garnered a reputation back then for not having extended software support compared to Snapdragon-powered Android phones due to the more open access nature of Snapdragon chipsets for developers on Android at the time. In turn, you will see Snapdragon devices getting supported for up to 2 or 3 years compared to only 1 or 2 years on MediaTek devices back in the 2010s.

However, in 2023, it seems that Mediatek-powered Android flagships can match or even have longer software support than Snapdragon-powered flagships as one smartphone manufacturer demonstrated with their 2 flagship smartphones launched last month. That manufacturer is Xiaomi, with their Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro.

The Xiaomi 13T and 13T Pro were launched on 26 September 2023 and Xiaomi has promised both models will receive 4 years of major Android OS updates and 5 years of Android security updates from the company. However, what’s interesting about the promise of updates are that it only applies to the Xiaomi 13T series and does not apply to the Xiaomi 13 series released earlier this year with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

For context, the Xiaomi 13T and 13T Pro are powered with MediaTek’s latest Dimensity 8200 Ultra and Dimensity 9200+ smartphones processors respectively. These two Dimensity processors are manufactured on TSMC’s industry-leading 4nm process which has a reputation of excellent power efficiency and high yields, the same process used in Apple’s A16 Bionic processor on the iPhone 15.

Meanwhile, the Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 13 Pro and the Xiaomi 13 Ultra are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile processor, which is Qualcomm’s flagship offering this year. However, all three flagship models mentioned above are only promised to 3 years of major Android updates and 5 years of Android security updates. 

In short, this means that the earlier launched Xiaomi 13 series powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will receive one year less of major Android OS updates than the MediaTek-powered Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro, debunking the myth of MediaTek devices receiving shorter years of software support than Snapdragon devices.

The Xiaomi 13T series of premium smartphones officially launched globally last month and the lineup received high sales volumes in Malaysia during its pre-order period from 27 Sep to 6 Oct 2023. 

However, as pre-order customers in Malaysia started receiving their Xiaomi 13T orders yesterday, a lot of the buyers unboxed and noticed that the freebies of RM568 (120 USD) were not included in their Xiaomi 13T pre-order as advertised. This prompted an outrage controversy in the reviews complaining about the missing freebies for pre-order customers, and an uptick of return orders for Xiaomi Malaysia as Xiaomi 13T buyers were not given their freebies due to the misleading advertisement.

Initially, Xiaomi Malaysia used the excuse that the stock of Redmi Buds 4 Pro and Xiaomi Smart Band 8 had run out, thus the lack of free gifts in the pre-order packages, but after the commotion raised by Xiaomi 13T pre-order customers yesterday and today. Xiaomi Malaysia had decided to officially reimburse Xiaomi 13T customers who didn’t receive their Redmi Buds 4 Pro and Xiaomi Smart Band 8 with coupons that allowed them to buy the gifts for free directly from their store.

After realising the error on their part, Xiaomi Malaysia managed to resolve the Xiaomi 13T series pre-order controversy within 24 hours. Malaysian buyers who have not received their free gifts can directly chat with their online customer service on Xiaomi Malaysia Local Store on Lazada or Shopee to redeem their free gifts coupon to purchase back the free gifts for free.

Despite facing a sluggish start in 2023, China‘s smartphone market could be gearing up for a turnaround. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, smartphone production in China decreased by 7.5% in the first eight months of 2023 compared to the same period last year. Sales also dipped by 4%, hitting their lowest second-quarter figures since 2014, as noted by market research firm Counterpoint.

Huawei has already seen growth of 41% from the last year (so far)

However, experts are optimistic for the rest of the year. Why? Look no further than Huawei Technologies and their recent launch of the 5G-enabled Mate 60 Pro series. “These new releases have brought great confidence back to China’s smartphone market,” says Ivan Lam, senior research analyst at Counterpoint.

Huawei’s sales have already seen a whopping 41% uptick from last year during the first eight months of this year. The company seems to have bounced back from supply chain issues, and has returned to its regular product launch cycles, including a low-key presales campaign for the Mate 60 Pro 5G.

The Mate 60 Pro series could be Huawei’s trump card, as it taps into its vast domestic user base of HarmonyOS—an alternative to Android. These new 5G models are not just expected to woo new customers but could also lure back those who had switched to other brands. Counterpoint predicts sales for these handsets to reach between five to six million units by year-end.

Apple is also expected to fuel a comeback in sales with the iPhone 15, but it’s Huawei’s indigenous tech—especially the mysterious, made-in-China Kirin 9000s processor—that’s catching eyeballs.

Despite the outstanding photo quality of the Google Pixel 7 series of smartphones, Google’s flagships have long suffered from complaints of poorer battery life and cellular stability than their competitors like Apple, Xiaomi and OnePlus. And the main culprit has always been assumed to be Google’s power-intensive Tensor chipsets manufactured on Samsung’s foundry.

With the recent release of the Google Pixel 8 series this week, Google fans were curious by whether the new Tensor G3 chipset would bring better battery life to the Pixel lineup. However, based on the small fine print on Google’s “Compare Phones” section on its website, it is revealed that the Google Pixel 8 series not only has the same bad battery life as the Pixel 7 series but is also worse than the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro that were released 2 years ago.

As shown in the official fine print above, the latest Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro’s battery lasted an average of 31 hours from Google’s own internal testing, which makes both devices on par with the Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro from last year. In addition, when compared to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro launched 2 years back, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro’s battery life is worse because they only last 3 hours shorter than Google’s own Pixel 6 at 34 hours. We compiled a table below to view Google’s claims of average battery life in its Pixel lineup in descending order, alongside the battery capacity of each Pixel smartphone.

For context, external testers like TechDroider on YouTube, have tested the battery life of last year’s Google Pixel 7 Pro against the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, OnePlus 11, Xiaomi 13 Ultra, and Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max. Their results on battery life are as shown in Table 2.

As shown, the Pixel 7 Pro is significantly lagging behind its competitors in the battery life department of the premium smartphone market by around 2 hours in battery life. And the battery life result of 8 hours and 13 mins is much shorter than Google’s official claim of 31 hours on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro.

If Google’s claims of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro’s battery are true, then the Pixel 8 series has the same bad battery life of “31 hours” as the Pixel 7 and possibly worse battery life than the Pixel 6 series as well.

Qualcomm, the California-based semiconductor company valued at 123.99 billion USD in 2023, is well-known for its series of 5G smartphone processors, called Snapdragon. However, the past few years saw the decline of Snapdragon’s reputation in the smartphone space due to its infamous Snapdragon 888 and 8 Gen 1 flagship processors which were constantly overheating and throttling performance. More recently, the company is also known to be streamlining their processor naming scheme and rebranding its chipsets like its main competitor, MediaTek.

These aforementioned actions have led many smartphone users and tech enthusiasts alike to ask the question – are Qualcomm Snapdragon processors more confusing in 2023? Yes, they are. And the reason could be that some Snapdragon processors are performing worse than its main competitor, the MediaTek Dimensity processors.

To clear up the confusion of Snapdragon processors in 2023, we have compiled all Snapdragon mobile processors with 5G network support to help our readers pick the best Snapdragon processor for their smartphones. We have neatly arranged them into 4 tiers based on their CPU structure, performance scores, and most importantly their day-to-day experience in a smartphone. The 4 tiers are respectively: Tier D (Poor), Tier C (Fair), Tier B (Good) and Tier A (Excellent).

Tier D: Poor Rating

Starting off with Tier D, there are a total of 6 Snapdragon processors that are rated as poor, as shown in Table 1. For simplicity’s sake, processors that feature the same CPU structure, GPU and semiconductor manufacturing as listed as one entity. For example, the Snapdragon 765, 765G, and 768G are listed as one entity in the table.

So one similarity across all the processors in Tier D, is that they utilise a 2+6 CPU structure, whereby there are 2 high-performance CPU cores, and 6 efficiency CPU cores that provide the performance for the smartphone. However, another fascinating similarity across these processors is that they all seem to be manufactured on Samsung’s manufacturing node, which has a reputation for being worse for a smartphone’s battery life than TSMC’s node because of the worse yields and power efficiency of the node. In turn, you get something like the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 in 2023, which somehow is worse than the MediaTek Dimensity 810, and Dimensity 800U found on the Realme 7 5G released more than 3 years ago.

The exception to the Samsung node is the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 695 which are manufactured on TSMC’s 6nm node, which has proved to give great battery life and okay performance to devices like the Poco X4 Pro and Redmi Note 12 5G. Nonetheless, the limitation of a 2+6 CPU structure on these processors still means that high-performance tasks are limited to slower speeds compared to the processors in Tier C.

Tier C: Fair Rating

Tier C includes a variety of Snapdragon processors ranging from the low-midrange Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 to the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 found on 2022 Android premium smartphones like the OnePlus 10 Pro. The full list of the Tier C Snapdragon processors is shown in Table 2 below.

Just like Tier D, Tier C has one glaring similarity across the lineup, the Snapdragon processors listed here are all manufactured on Samsung’s process node, with the exception of the Snapdragon 778G which is on TSMC’s 6nm process. 

Most importantly, Tier C processors like the Snapdragon 888 and 8 Gen 1 led to many complaints of overheating, and thermal throttling by smartphone users, that they felt cheated to buy such an expensive Android device only to have the phone be very hot in the hand after long sessions of smartphone use, or even worse, the smartphone’s motherboard being so hot that it burnt the motherboard and you have to pay an expensive fee to repair the smartphone entirely.

As for the less controversial Tier C processors, they are equipped with a 4+4 CPU structure, whereby there are 4 performance CPU cores, and 4 efficiency CPU cores to back up the CPU. The most popular amongst the Tier C processors is the Snapdragon 778G series of processors, because it was the only processor in this tier manufactured on TSMC’s 6nm process, meaning that didn’t suffer from the higher temperatures and higher power draw of its siblings that were manufactured on Samsung’s node instead. However for mid-range chips, the difference in power draw is mostly negligible, and the only limitation for the processor to have better performance comes down to a better GPU.

The well-known power efficiency of the Snapdragon 778G, makes it attractive to smartphone manufacturers to put in their Android smartphone. In 2023, the processor can be found on devices as old as the Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G (2021), Nothing Phone (1) to devices released this year such as the Poco X5 Pro (2023) and Oppo Reno 10 Pro (2023).

Tier B: Good Rating

Moving into Tier B, we have only 1 Snapdragon processor in this tier, and that is the Snapdragon 865 series found in devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G, OnePlus 8 Pro, Poco F3 and Xiaomi Mi 11X.

Utilising a 4+4 (4 Performance Core + 4 Efficiency Core) CPU structure and a stronger Adreno 650 GPU in the processor, the Snapdragon 865 series is well-equipped for smooth and fast operations on your smartphone daily. Alongside its powerful performance, is its much lower operating temperature than the Snapdragon 888 and 8 Gen 1, due to it being manufactured on TSMC’s 7nm node which brought better power efficiency and better battery life on smartphones using the chipset.

However, in 2023, the 2020 Snapdragon 865 is starting to show its age when compared to MediaTek’s newer solutions like the Dimensity 8000 and 9000 series of 5G smartphone processors. Yet, after 3 years, the fact this processor is still very competitive in the market with its high performance and long smartphone battery life, shows the value offered by this processor, and its performance is expected to still be smooth until the year 2025.

Tier A: Excellent Rating

Saving the best for last is Tier A, the excellent tier with the best Snapdragon processors you can buy in 2023. There are 3 of them and they are listed in table 4 below.

Leveraging on TSMC’s industry-leading 4nm manufacturing process, these Tier A Snapdragon processors are some of the best processors you can get in an Android smartphone in 2023 for the best balance of power efficiency and high performance. And with their performance leagues in front of the Tier B, C, D processors. Smartphones utilising Tier A processors are expected to have fast and smooth performance until 2028 or even longer.

Smartphones that utilise Tier A processors include the Redmi Note 12 Turbo (also known as the Poco F5), the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, the Xiaomi 13 series and the Oppo Find X6 Pro.

Yet, many of you probably think we’re mainly talking about the rivalry between tech giants like Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi, and might not take our words too seriously. However, a study by Counterpoint reveals the intensity of this competition. According to the published report, nearly 500 brands exited the smartphone market from 2017 to 2023. Here are the details…

Local Brands Vanish as Global Giants Dominate Smartphone Market

If you asked any of you to name companies competing in the global smartphone market, you’d probably give us a list of 10-20 brands, mostly consisting of major manufacturers. However, the global smartphone market is a much more fierce battlefield than you might think. Today, around 250 manufacturers worldwide are competing for a share of this market. This number was once much higher. Not so long ago, in 2017, there were over 700 brands vying for consumer attention, and within a six year, 65% of them exited the market.

Of course, there are many reasons for this decline, and some aren’t as bad as you might think. First, let’s consider why there were so many manufacturers at one time. The ever-increasing popularity of smartphones and the steadily growing numbers each quarter prompted many local and global companies to try their luck in this market.

I’m sure that no matter which country you read this from, a few manufacturers who normally did something else but at some point released their own Android phone will come to mind. In fact, these local smartphone brands were once hailed as titans in their own regions. However, they have been the main casualties in this market evolution.

Unfortunately, the rise of global brands and their expansion into more markets, coupled with their ability to produce better phones, has made it harder for local producers. Moreover, the sheer size of these global tech giants has allowed them to offer models with a higher price-to-performance ratio.

As a result, local brands which once dominated their markets have seen their market share decline, or have even exited the market entirely. Additionally, these local manufacturers, already lagging in advertising, have fallen further behind due to the absence of celebrity brand ambassadors and significant marketing events.

In the process we discussed, numerous reasons stood in the way of companies’ success, with the final blow coming from the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though there was an increased global demand for technology products and manufacturers struggled to meet this demand, disruptions in the supply chain and other economic issues impacted smaller producers even more.

As a result, 65% of brands that were producing their own smartphones in 2017 have now exited the market. This decline isn’t solely due to a crisis, especially considering there are still over 250 manufacturers. However, to protect consumers, competition shouldn’t be compromised, and the number of brands should not decrease much further.
