After five years out of the lead, Xiaomi is back on top in the global wearables market. New data from Omdia shows that worldwide wearable shipments crossed 200 million units in 2025, up 6% year over year.

Xiaomi claimed 18% of total shipments, narrowly edging out Apple at 17% and Huawei at 16%. The margins are razor thin, with less than a percentage point separating the top three. Samsung and Garmin round out the top five at 9% and 5%, respectively.

What stands out isn’t just Xiaomi’s return to No. 1 — it’s how close the race has become. According to Omdia’s research manager Cynthia Chen, the competitive focus has shifted. Wearables are no longer just about who has the best display, the most sensors, or the longest battery life. Increasingly, it’s about ecosystem strength. The tighter the integration between devices — phone, tablet, car, smart home — the stickier the user base becomes.

Xiaomi’s comeback appears to be driven by breadth rather than a single breakout product. Its Mi Band lineup continues to move huge volumes in the affordable segment, while its entry-level smartwatches help raise average selling prices without pushing too far into premium territory. The company’s broader “Human × Car × Home” strategy also plays a role, tying wearables more closely to its expanding ecosystem.

Apple, meanwhile, remains dominant in the high-end bracket. Its wearables benefit from deep integration with the iPhone, premium build quality, and an expanding suite of health features. Huawei has carved out a strong position as well, particularly in China, with a wide portfolio and growing focus on professional sports tracking and health tools.

Health tracking is evolving from basic step counts and heart rate monitoring to continuous, more advanced metrics. Some brands are even exploring lighter, more minimalist form factors to improve comfort for 24/7 tracking.

With Xiaomi, Apple, and Huawei separated by just a sliver of market share, 2026 could easily reshuffle the rankings again. For now, though, Xiaomi has its crown back. Going forward, the real battle may be less about hardware and more about who can build the most compelling ecosystem around it.

It allows them to manage app and service access, control who their child can call or message, and track their location via GPS.

On the surface, the kid’s mode has a very similar experience to a regular Apple Watch. It lets your child keep the same watch faces as yours or use apps like iMessage, Apple Music, and Siri. But its biggest perk is GPS tracking. 

The service also integrates seamlessly with Apple’s Find My app, so parents can see their child’s location in real time. And you can set up notifications for when your child reaches school or arrive home. 

There’s also Schooltime mode, which locks the watch to a simple clock face. You can schedule it to activate during class hours and if the child disables it, you’ll be notified of it. 

But an Apple Watch for kids isn’t exactly cheap. It’s an option if you’re already in the Apple ecosystem and want a connected smartwatch for your child. In this case, any Apple Watch with cellular support will do the job.

But if you’re looking for a new one, the best option is the Apple Watch SE (2nd Gen) because it’s the most affordable model available.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 7

Like Apple, Samsung doesn’t offer a kid-specific smartwatch. Instead, it provides a dedicated mode for its Galaxy Watch that works similarly to Apple’s solution — but for Android phones.

To set up the smartwatch for your child, you’ll need to use the Google Family Link app. This lets you establish guardrails, such as trusted contacts for calls and texts or GPS tracking. And since it’s a full-fledged smartwatch just with a kid mode, you can access all the apps available on the Play Store. 

Of course, parents have control over what their kids can use, and there’s a School Time mode — similar to Apple Watch — that limits functionality during school hours to help kids stay focused. In an emergency, kids can also activate the SOS feature by pressing the side button five times. 

As mentioned earlier, there’s no dedicated Samsung watch for kids. However, the Galaxy Watch for Kids mode is currently available only on the Galaxy Watch 7 LTE model in the US, supported by AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon networks. The feature is relatively new, having launched just in January this year, so it’s likely to roll out to older Galaxy Watch models in the future.

That said, like Apple’s solution, this isn’t the most budget-friendly way to keep track of your kids. If you’re looking for something more affordable, we’ve got a few options below.

Fitbit Ace LTE

Launched in August 2024, the Fitbit Ace LTE is designed specifically for kids, with games, activity tracking, location sharing, and built-in LTE for calls and messaging. 

To access calling, texting, and location sharing, you’ll need the Ace Pass, a $9.99-per-month subscription that enables LTE connectivity. While the watch can still be used without a subscription, its capabilities are limited to just basic movement and step tracking.

Unlike the Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch, the Ace LTE doesn’t support third-party app downloads. Instead, it comes preloaded with games designed to keep kids entertained.

The Ace LTE works as a standalone device and is cross-platform. Parents can set it up through the Fitbit Ace app on Android or iOS, where they can manage contacts (who also need the Ace app), and enable school hours which disables games and calls. You can also, of course, track your child’s location which also syncs with Google Maps. 

A notable safety feature of the Fitbit Ace is the “Call for Help” feature. The child can press and hold the top-side button to activate it which will begin a five-second countdown. If canceled in time, nothing happens. But if it reaches zero, the watch automatically dials emergency contacts, starting with the primary parent.

It’s a kid-friendly smartwatch with solid safety features—but like most connected wearables, you’ll need to pay extra to unlock its full potential.

Xiaomi Smart Kids Watch

Xiaomi’s Smart Kids Watch is one of the most affordable options out there with built-in GPS tracking. It features two-way calling, and GPS making it a solid pick for parents looking for a safety-focused smartwatch for their kids. The battery life? Better than many competitors.

The standout feature here is video calling. Yes, the watch has a tiny camera built into the top bezel, letting parents not only talk to their kids but also get a quick look at their surroundings. Unlike pricier LTE-enabled wearables, Xiaomi’s watch relies on Wi-Fi for video calls. It also supports voice messages of up to 15 seconds, so kids can send quick updates without hopping on a call.

There’s also a Do Not Disturb mode, which mutes calls and messages during set periods—perfect for school hours or bedtime. It also has an SOS button that instantly alerts designated emergency contacts, ensuring quick assistance in case of an emergency.

On the fitness side, the watch includes exercise modes like skipping, outdoor running, and cycling. Parents can track their child’s activity, including time spent exercising, calories burned, and steps, through the Xiaomi Kids app.

For the price, it’s a compelling choice—especially if staying connected (without handing your kid a smartphone) is the goal.

Garmin Bounce

The Garmin Bounce is a feature-packed kids’ smartwatch with LTE connectivity, live GPS tracking, and fitness tracking. It offers two-way texting and voice messaging through the Garmin Jr app, and as expected, contacts are limited to approved users. Parents can set step goals, safety boundaries, and Do Not Disturb schedules for school or bedtime.

The Bounce tracks walking, running, swimming, and biking, with GPS-enabled distance tracking and includes sleep tracking, alarms, and chore reminders. It also has a built-in adventure feature that encourages kids to stay active with virtual rewards, though much of it happens in the companion app rather than on the watch itself.

The Bounce offers an incredible battery life of about 35–50 hours depending on GPS use. However, LTE features require a $10/month subscription, and the watch’s location boundaries are limited to fixed-radius circles, making precise tracking tricky. Despite some quirks, the Garmin Bounce is a solid option for parents looking for a connected, safety-focused smartwatch for their kids.

Tony Jauncey, an 82-year-old man from Kidderminster, UK, found a lifesaver in his Christmas gift, an Apple Watch, after being hit by a car on January 19, 2024. Jauncey was crossing the street to get to his car parked at a local supermarket when a car, not adhering to the roundabout rules, struck him. Despite the common belief that roundabouts are safer, this unfortunate event proves that accidents can still happen.

The moment he was hit, Jauncey’s Apple Watch kicked into action. It detected his fall and automatically asked if he needed to call emergency services. Unable to move or cancel the alert, the watch called for help on its own. This quick response brought the needed assistance to Jauncey at a critical time.

The driver involved in the accident stopped immediately to help, and, luckily, three off-duty nurses were close by to offer first aid until the emergency services arrived. This collective effort, along with the smartwatch’s timely alert, played a vital role in Jauncey’s survival and recovery. We have seen countless instances of how smartwatches contribute towards alerting services promptly, and hopefully, incidents like these motivate more people to get smartwatches for older members of their family/community.

The Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), a research firm specializing in display industry analysis, has released a comprehensive forecast report on the MicroLED market, projecting significant growth and market shifts by 2028. This report outlines the emerging trends and challenges in the MicroLED display sector, highlighting its potential impact on various industries.

Emerging Dominance of MicroLED in Wearables

MicroLED technology is set to revolutionize the display market with its superior attributes compared to conventional LED displays. Known for its energy efficiency, microLED displays significantly reduce the risk of burn-in and promise a longer lifespan. These displays are distinguished by their individual pixel light sources, which enable superior contrast, faster response times, and more vibrant colors. This makes microLED technology particularly suitable for devices where high-quality display performance is essential.

One of the key predictions in DSCC’s report is the expansion of the MicroLED market to $1.46 billion by 2028. This growth is expected to be driven primarily by its adoption in wearable devices like smartwatches, AR glasses, and automotive displays. There’s another good news for Apple as DSCC reports that the iPhone 15 series has seen a significant increase in panel shipments, with a 16% growth compared to the iPhone 14 series and 21% compared to the iPhone 13 series. The iPhone 15 Pro models, especially in October, have become increasingly popular, securing a 71% share of total panel shipments. The higher starting price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and consumer preference for higher-storage variants have driven a 5% increase in the Average Selling Price (ASP) for the iPhone 15 series. Samsung Display remains a major supplier, but LG Display and BOE have also entered the supply chain, contributing to the series’ growing demand.

This was based on a groundbreaking study conducted by the UK Dementia Research Institute team at Cardiff University. The key to their prediction lay in tracking the speed of movement of the participants over a single week between 2013 and 2016.

Parkinson’s disease is characterized by the progressive degeneration of brain cells over an extended period. The classic symptoms include involuntary shaking or tremors, slow movement, and stiff muscles. Unfortunately, by the time a diagnosis is made, irreversible damage has often already happened.

Approximately 30% of the UK population has adopted smartwatches, and that’s great because it offers a promising avenue for early-stage Parkinson’s detection. Study leader Dr. Cynthia Sandor believes that the ability to predict events up to seven years in advance based on a week’s worth of data could lead to the development of a valuable screening tool. This tool would not only facilitate early detection but also aid in clinical trial recruitment and allow patients to access treatments at an earlier stage when they become available.

The study relied on data from the UK Biobank, an extensive health database encompassing over half a million individuals. Dr. Kathryn Peall, a researcher involved in the study, expressed confidence in the accuracy of the model, stating that it could differentiate Parkinson’s from other conditions that affect movement, such as old age or frailty.

The ethical implications of informing individuals about their Parkinson’s diagnosis years before symptoms set in is a whole different dilemma. However, at the moment, it will remain a matter of personal choice. Huawei has announced the Watch 4 series recently alongside Mate X3 and P60 Pro. The device is slated for the official global release in June, and Chinese release on May 18th. Huawei’s Watch 4 series has been revealed in an early hands-on video leak. This video provides a detailed look at the new smartwatch’s design, including both Pro and non-Pro variants.

The leaked footage first showcases the Huawei Watch 4 Pro from a side view, offering a clear look at its functional button and rotating crown. Samsung has announced that its upcoming Galaxy Watch 6 series will feature an FDA-approved heart-rate monitoring feature, allowing users to detect irregular heart rhythms and signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). Global smartphone shipments may not have been very impressive lately but the same cannot be said for smartwatches. The wearable market has been on the rise for a couple of years now and 2022 was no exception. According to Counterpoint Research, worldwide smartwatch shipments grew 12% YoY last year thanks to the solid YoY growth in the first three quarters of the year. The news is not all good as the shipments fell 2% YoY in Q4 due to inflationary pressures and slow growth in India.

According to the report, this was the first time the market witnessed negative growth since the pandemic hit the world in 2020. The most notable trend of the year was the polarization of demand based on price. Specifically, the shipments of smartwatches in the mid-price range declined, while there was a significant increase in the shipments of smartwatches in the price segments of over $400 and up to $100.

Indian smartwatch brands, particularly Noise and Fire Boltt grew significantly in the global market, surpassing 5% of the total market share to rank fourth and fifth, respectively. However, they were nowhere close to US behemoth Apple, which witnessed a 17% YoY increase in shipments as the Apple Watch Series 8, Ultra, and SE 2022 showed strong sales. In addition, the brand’s shipments increased by 50 million for the first time.

The report says Huawei‘s market share fell 1%p YoY because the Chinese smartwatch market lost momentum to India in 2022. But the brand’s revenue increased by 20% due to its relative focus on HLOS smartwatches. Counterpoint defines HLOS smartwatches as “electronic watches running a high-level OS, such as Watch OS (Apple) or Wear OS (Samsung), with the ability to install third-party apps”.

Analyst Woojin Son said, “Apple strongly drove the average selling price (ASP) rise in the global smartwatch market in 2022, especially in the >$400 price band. There are two main reasons for this ASP rise – a diversified Apple smartwatch line-up and a rise in the exchange rate”.

Meta had recently laid off 11,000 people, the majority of whom worked in their technology business. The number of sacked employees amounts to 13% of the brand’s overall workforce. Meta is preparing to eliminate two of its unreleased smartwatches and its Portal Video calling smart displays after firing the employees.

Back in June, Meta announced that it would no longer be producing any more Portal devices for consumers. Furthermore, the brand had abandoned the smartwatch in development under the codename “Milan.” According to reports, the smartwatch was scheduled to arrive in 2023. It will be priced at about $350 and will include two built-in cameras for video calls. Now, the company has made another decision to abandon its plans to launch its unreleased smartwatches.

According to the reports hovering around the internet, Meta has decided not to sell the Portal video calling hardware to businesses anymore. And there are two unreleased smartwatches, one of them is in the early stage of development while the other one is in the middle stage of development, which is also killed by the brand. The development work has been stopped officially for them, and they will no more launch in the market. The brand has not yet commented officially on the decision.

As of now, we are not sure why the company has decided to discontinue selling its Portal video calling technology and has abruptly halted development work on its unannounced wearables.

The teaser reveals that Oppo is planning announce “Pantanal” at its ODC 2022 (Oppo Developers Conference 2022) in China happening on August 30th next Tuesday.

As to what the name “Pantanal” refers to, the Pantanal is actually a UNESCO heritage site located in South America. 

At more than 42 million acres, the Pantanal is the largest tropical wetland and one of the most pristine in the world. To put its size into perspective, put the Pantanal over Europe, and it would be larger than at least nine countries, including England, Austria, Hungary, Greece, and Ireland.

It sprawls across three South American countries—Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay—and supports millions of people there, as well as communities in the lower Rio de la Plata Basin. Another fun fact of this massive wetland is that it has the largest concentration of crocodiles in the world, with approximately 10 million caimans.

According sources within China, the Pantanal smart cross-platform ecosystem is one of the 3 most important releases for Oppo this year, alongside Oppo’s Marisilicon X imaging silicon announced earlier this year, and another unknown release that Oppo is saving for the end of the year.

Leading global technology market analyst firm, Canalys has recently published a report on the state of the global wearables market in the first quarter of 2022. In the report, it is stated that 41.7 million wearables were shipped in Q1 2022 alone, of which basic fitness band shipments compromised of only 9.7 million (23.3 per cent of the market), while the rest of the market is held by basic watch and smartwatch shipments at a staggering 32.0 million. 

Overall the worldwide wearables market in Q1 2022 experienced total shipments fell by 4% YoY when compared to Q1 2021. This phenomenon is caused by the rapidly declining social relevance of fitness bands, but fortunately, shipments did not fall further due to the rising popularity of the basic watch and smartwatch market.

Currently, Apple, Huawei and Xiaomi are the Top 3 best-selling wearables brands globally. Apple dominates in first with its 22.1% market share. The company had shipped out 9.2 million of its Apple Watches in Q1 2022, which could be could be contributed to the brand launching not only its flagship Apple Watch Series 7 of smartwatches but also launching a more affordable Apple Watch SE smartwatch, providing more options for the consumers and capturing more of the market share. Due to this, the company experienced a positive 21% growth in annual sales when comparing Q1 2021 and Q1 2022.

Moving onto Huawei, the company rises up from third place last year to second place this year with 11.1% of the wearables market share and 4.1 million total shipments of its fitness bands and smartwatches. The brand remains steady in the wearables market with the main appeal of its smartwatches being the company’s OpenHarmony ecosystem. The OpenHarmony ecosystem allows Huawei smartwatches to not only be connected to your Huawei smartphone, but also to Huawei’s IoT smart devices as well. And that includes the company’s own electric vehicles. For example, you can use your Huawei Watch as digital car keys to unlock your Huawei Car.

Xiaomi, on the other hand, has dropped from second to third with 10.1% of market share and 4.2 million shipments, mainly due to dwindling sales of the brand’s fitness bands. As fitness bands continue to lose in popularity due to their smaller screens, the brand itself is already quietly switching its focus to developing smartwatches. But currently, Xiaomi smartwatches like the Xiaomi Watch S1 are still the company’s first attempts at the concept, and with the shifting marketing focus, the fitness band sales decline is to be accelerated as well.

Coming in at 4th and 5th are Samsung and Fitbit respectively. Samsung remains stable in the wearables market with an increased 8.1% market share in Q1 2022 at 3.4 million shipments, due to the company’s collaboration with Google’s Wear OS for its Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series of smartwatches. Meanwhile, Fitbit, which has been acquired by Google saw its sales drop to 2.9 million in Q1 2022 with 7% of the total wearables market share. 

Analysing the basic fitness band market, it has been on a steady decline since Q4 2020. The bands suffered a 37% decline quarter-on-quarter (Q4 2021 to Q1 2022), marking the sixth consecutive fall in the quarterly shipments since Q4 2020. And the 9.7 million shipments figure is the first time that the fitness band market has dipped below 10 million in a long time after it had peaked at 27.9 million in Q4 2019.

On the other hand, the basic watch and smartwatch market has seen positive growth YoY by up to 15%. The Canalys report has cited some reasons why watches are growing in popularity.

“Consumers are favouring watches over bands. With bigger displays, richer features and longer battery life, they believe watches are better able to fulfil their health-tracking and digital lifestyle needs,” said Sherry Jin, Canalys Research Analyst. “Basic watches are positioned as an affordable step-up from basic bands, suitable for price-conscious consumers with growing expectations as to what wearables can do.”

Poco is a sub-brand under the Xiaomi corporation selling high value-to-performance smartphones at affordable prices. It is most well-known for its Poco F1 in 2018, and Poco F3 series in 2021. Both smartphones featured flagship Snapdragon 845 and 870 chipsets starting from only under 300 Euros.

In 2022, it seems that Poco is planning to make a splash in the industry again, but it’s not smartphones this around, it’s apparently a new smartwatch?

The news comes from leakster, Piyush Bhasarkar on Twitter. The post shares a screenshot of a listing of a smartwatch branded under Poco from the Russian Electronics Certification platform, EEC. 

The listing reveals a few details about the smartwatch. First, the smartwatch will be bearing the model number Poco M2131W1. Next is the manufacturer of the smartwatch. The smartwatch will apparently be manufactured by 70mai Co. Ltd. in Shanghai, China. If the name 70mai sounds familiar, then you’ll be glad to know that 70mai is one of the brands that Xiaomi currently integrates into their Xiaomi IoT(Internet of Things) ecosystem. 

70mai is not actually known for their smartwatches, but you’ve probably heard of their dashcams such as the 70mai Dash Cam 1S, Dash Cam A400 and Dash Cam Pro Plus. As for further specs about the Poco Smartwatch, no mention of specs were within the EEC listing and as of current, this is the first leak regarding Poco’s first entry into the smartwatch market. 

Back in November 2021, one Poco exec did reveal that the brand is expanding into ecosystem products in 2022.  “We always think smartphone plus IoT is a key strategy for us,” Poco Global head Kevin Qiu said. 

This suggests that earbuds, wearables(fitness bands and smartwatches) and power banks could be the first products towards building a Poco IoT ecosystem. After all, an ecosystem for Poco allows for a more seamless experience while also building brand loyalty among its current Poco customer base.

Xiaomi is kicking off 2022 with a bang with its newly announced Xiaomi 12 series, MIUI 13, Xiaomi Buds 3 and Xiaomi Watch S1 at its Winter Flagship Launch Event last week(Dec 28). The Xiaomi Watch S1 specifically officially goes on sale from Dec 31 onwards until January 4, and to reel in more customers, Xiaomi has decided to add more third-party app support for the Xiaomi Watch S1 compared to its predecessors.

From the official Chinese Xiaomi Wear Weibo account, Xiaomi announces that it is adding 11 more 3rd party apps which include audiobooks, music streaming, 3rd party health trackers and calendars as they want to provide the convenience of doing all of the aforementioned activities above without needing to take your smartphone out of your pocket.

From the poster shared by the account, it shows some prominent apps in the Chinese app market space newly supported on the Xiaomi Watch S1, such as Lanren audiobooks(a Chinese alternative to Amazon’s Audible), Wangyi Music Streaming(a Chinese alternative to Spotify), Wannianli Calendar(a calendar app), and Mint Health(a health tracking app, similar to Mi Fitness). Some other supported 3rd party apps are also on the Xiaomi Watch S1 platform like navigation apps and food delivery apps, so you can tour and order food on the go. 

Besides the 3rd party app support, the other highlighting features of the Xiaomi Watch S1 are its design and specs. The Xiaomi Watch S1 features an elegant and stylish design that still retains the minimalist design philosophy of the company. The watch has a 1.43-inch 60Hz AMOLED touchscreen display surrounded by a refined stainless steel frame. The watch is coated by a layer of sapphire glass to ensure better scratch protection for its users.

Xiaomi claims the Xiaomi Watch S1 can sustain up to 12 days on a single charge with a massive 470mAh battery. On standby, the watch pushes even further to 24 days. It uses a magnetic charging connector to get juiced up. In the health tracking department, the Watch S1 brings up to 117 sports modes, supports sleep tracking, heart rate, and blood oxygen monitoring. In the connectivity department, the watch comes with NFC for contactless payment and supports Bluetooth calls, and dual-frequency GNSS positioning.

Realme only launched its realme TechLife sub-brand DIZO in India back in July 2021, but the DIZO sub-brand already has a wide range of devices under its belt ranging from wireless earbuds, smartwatches, hairdryers, and even beard trimmers for sale.

Well, Realme is planning to continue the momentum of its hot new sub-brand with a new affordable smartwatch, the Realme DIZO Watch R. Twitter user and popular Indian leakster, Mukul Sharma, shared on his social media as of late that the Realme DIZO Watch R will be coming soon to the market, and that the device will be launching first in India. 

In the post, he also attached the images of the box that comes with the Realme DIZO Watch R. The box shows off the design of the Realme DIZO Watch R, and the watch seems to be a circular dial watch in the color option of what seems to be either rose gold or mystic bronze. The box also mentions that the Realme DIZO Watch R is part of the realme TechLife family of IoT products. 

In the replies, Mukul Sharma also mentions that the Realme DIZO Watch R is equipped with a 1.3-inch screen. No other details such as specs, battery capacity, or the release date of the watch were revealed, but from what we have gathered from previous leaks, the Realme DIZO Watch R will be launching in January 2022, with the DIZO Watch 2 Special Sports Edition launching together with it on the same launch event as well. The Realme DIZO Watch R is claimed to be the affordable sibling compared to its more expensive brothers, the Realme DIZO Watch 2 and DIZO Watch 2 Pro.

In comparison, the DIZO Watch 2 comes with a 1.69-inch TFT LCD display, while the Watch 2 Pro sports a 1.75-inch TFT LCD screen. The duo comes with features like a SpO2 sensor, heart-rate monitoring, sleep tracking, camera & music controls, and call & SMS alerts. The Watch 2 has 15 sports modes and a battery life of 10 days, whereas, the Watch 2 Pro has a whopping 90 sports modes and 14 days of battery life. The DIZO Watch R is expected to cut the unnecessary gimmicks of its expensive siblings to reach a more affordable price tag.

Vivo held a joint press conference with China’s Big 3 Telcos (China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile) yesterday, to announce vivo’s collaboration with the Big 3 on their newest upcoming smartwatch, the vivo Watch 2.

At the event, vivo showed off the design of its vivo Watch 2 to the public at the in-person event. From the pictures gathered, we found that vivo is using a circular watch face, a round-shaped dial as well as swappable watch bands for the vivo Watch 2. The watch is also shown to come either in a metallic silver finish or in a matte black finish with two buttons on the side. 

Another announcement at the event today was the support of standalone eSIM SMS for the vivo Watch 2. This is the first for the company and with standalone eSIM support, the watch can now receive SMSes without needing to be connected via Bluetooth to a phone or even the internet via Wi-Fi. This feature is a joint collaboration between Vivo and the Big 3 Telcos in China.

No other features or specs were announced today at the event today, but a TENAA listing of the vivo Watch 2 from October gave some insight into what the specs of the vivo Watch 2 are.

The vivo Watch 2 is said to feature an OLED display, a heart-rate tracker, a built-in GPS, a step counter, and a 515mAh battery, which is an improvement over last year’s 478mAh battery on the 2020 vivo Watch.

Xiaomi appears to be gearing up to launch a new smartwatch in European and Asian markets dubbed the Xiaomi Watch S1.

According to a report by 91mobiles, tipster Mukul Sharma informed that the Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is working on a new smartwatch dubbed the Xiaomi Watch S1. The smartwatch is expected to hit multiple markets globally, including Europe, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, in Q1 of 2022. The smartwatch is also set to debut in India but it is not confirmed at the moment.

The Xiaomi Watch S1 is believed to be the next generation of smartwatches offered by the company after Mi Watch Colour, Mi Watch Revolve, and the Mi Watch Revolve Active. Unfortunately, the specifications of this upcoming smartwatch are still under wraps, but we can get a gist of what to expect by looking at the Mi Watch Revolve Active.

The Mi Watch Revolve Active, released back in June, offers various features like SpO2 blood oxygen monitoring, 24/7 heart rate monitor, VO2 Max, sleep tracking, and even a stress and energy indicator. It also supports 5ATM water resistance and is offered in 6 colorful strap options.

Furthermore, the Mi Watch Revolve Active also supports Amazon’s Alexa and offers users music control, 117 sports modes, over 110 Watch faces, inbuilt GPS/GLONASS positioning system alongside app notifications. The smartwatch sports a circular 3.53 cm (1.38 inch) colored AMOLED display and has a battery life of 14 days.

UNISOC has announced a new chipset for smartwatches. The UNISOC W307 was unveiled yesterday and it comes with a bunch of features including an integrated 4G multi-mode modem.

Built on TSMC’s 28nm HPC+ process, the UNISOC W307 is said to be based on an “ultra-low-power architecture design”. The chipmaker says the package area is 30% smaller than that of the last generation, which brings an improvement in performance, connectivity, intelligence, and power consumption.

UNISOC’s chipsets are used in various products from brands including Nokia, Xiaomi, Hisense, and Lava. For example, its UNISOC 8521W chipset is found in the Xiaomi Mi Kids Watch 4C that was announced last month.

Back in February 2018, Huami filed its IPO at the New York Stock Exchange, ushering a new era in its existence. The company CEO, Huang Wang, was present at the TechCrunch Shenzhen summit a couple of days back where he shared some key details about the company and its operations.

While taking at the event, Mr. Wang revealed that Huami will launch a “Revolutionary” wearable smart device in 2019. Unfortunately, he didn’t divulge any more information about the upcoming gadget. But judging from his comments at the event, where he stated that “smartwatches will replace smartphones in the future”, we could be looking at something really exciting from the company. If you remember, back at IFA, Nubia showed off its Nubia Alpha concept wearable, which was essentially a smartphone on the wrist. Huami could be aiming to release a similar smart device next year, but as of now, this is just a speculation.

Talking about the recently released Huangshan -1 chip for wearables, Mr. Wang added that it can screen the HR patterns of users via cloud-based AI. This helps to monitor the user’s heart rate carefully and check for any unusual patterns. Moreover, it looks like Huami is aiming to get the Huangshan – 1 chip on other wearable manufacturers in the market as well. So, it won’t be just limited to the company’s own smartwatches.

He also gave out some essential sales figures about the company’s recent devices. Until 2017, Huami’s total sales surpassed 18.1 million and user base was well above 56.1 million. Further, the recently released Mi Band 3 has managed to sell more than 10K units in the past five months alone. Even the Mi Band 2, which enjoyed a long stay in the market (Mi Band 3 had a pretty late release), sold more than 30 million units worldwide. Note that these figures are before the 11/11 singles day, where both these devices could have garnered a lot more sales.

Mr. Wang also added that just like Xiaomi, Huami too does not want to be tagged as a hardware company. He said that people consider Huami to be a hardware firm, however, the company positions itself as a sports and health big data firm. If you recall, time and again Xiaomi has positioned itself as an internet company, and not a hardware company. Further talking about Huami’s relationship with Xiaomi, he adds that both the companies work very closely and have interconnected ecosystems.

When the Deputy Chairman of a company’s Investment Review Board sees no future for a product which his company has invested heavily on and is in its second generation, it usually leaves us in a state of confusion. That is the case with the Huawei smartwatch presently. According to South China Morning Post, Huawei CEO Eric Xu has expressed his doubts about the prospects of smartwatches in the face of the booming smartphone market.

Mr Xu, who also doubles as  Rotating CEO, was responding to a question on whether the development of end-user products like smartwatches would stifle its smartphone business. This was at the company’s Global Analyst Summit 2017 held in Shenzhen on Tuesday. “I am always confused as to what smartwatches are for when we have smartphones…..Therefore, when the smartwatch team in Huawei presents their ideas to me with great excitement, I keep reminding them to consider whether there are tangible needs [for these products] in the market,” the CEO was quoted to have said.

But come on, Huawei has two smartwatches in its kitty! The latest version, Huawei Watch 2, was released barely a month ago packing Google’s latest Android Wear 2.0. Perhaps, Mr Xu’s confusion stems from the fact that the smartwatch comes with a SIM card slot and so can be used to make or receive calls. The first generation of Huawei smartwatch powered by Android Wear was released in 2015.

Moreso, the smartwatch market has not grown as fast as it was anticipated to do and similar views have repeatedly been expressed by many analysts and smartphone company executives, who are still wondering when, or even if, smartwatches will catch on with the general public. Hopefully, that breakthrough moment would land soon and Huawei wouldn’t like to be left out of the party when the boom time arrives. Perhaps, that is what is sustaining its current efforts in the development of more wearables.
