<p>Market research agency Omdia says that Samsung Electronics is going to ramp up its use of LG WOLED panels in its products this year. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a> will reportedly use 700,000 to 800,000 WOLED panels in its OLED TVs this year. To give you a context, this is up from last year&#8217;s 10-20 thousand units.</p>

<h2>Samsung will use significantly more LG WOLED panels compared to last year</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="720" height="406" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Samsung-OLED.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-611213" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Samsung-OLED.jpg 720w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Samsung-OLED-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Samsung-OLED-696x392.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /><figcaption>Image: Samsung</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>LG Display is expected to manufacture nearly 6 million units this year, from which LG Electronics will utilize 3.5-4 million. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg-display/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LG Display</a> will ship the rest to other manufacturers such as Sony and Samsung. According to the market research agency, Samsung Electronics will purchase a significant proportion of the rest of the LG panels.</p>

<p>Notably, Samsung Display is also one of the big players in the display manufacturing industry, and the company will reportedly manufacture 1.4 million QD-OLED panels this year. Among these, Samsung Electronics themselves will use 1.1 million (nearly the full of it) and they will share the rest with Sony. So, it seems from the research data, that Samsung is focusing on manufacturing QD-OLED panels and fulfilling their demand of WOLED panels with supplements from LG Display. Notably, Samsung is expected to manufacture nearly 2 million OLED TVs this year, which is reportedly double as compared to last year.</p>

<p>Market research reveals that the overall OLED TV sales are expected to reach 6.3 million units this year, with Samsung and LG accounting for 5.5 million units. In summary of the research data, Samsung will utilize LG&#8217;s B series and C series TV-level WOLED panels in its OLED TVs but will continue to use in-house QD-OLED panels for its high-end TV products like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/01/08/samsung-s95d-brightest-oled-tv-glare-free/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">S95D that was unveiled at CES this year</a>.</p>

A recently sighted online report highlighted that the Z Fold3 and W22 5G (SM-W2022) would be identical in many areas, with slight changes design-wise. It is also almost sure that the new Chinese model will have dual SIM capabilities to suit the Chinese market.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/galaxy-w21.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-352071" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/galaxy-w21.png?x10805" alt="Samsung Galaxy W21 5G" width="760" height="552" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/galaxy-w21.png 760w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/galaxy-w21-300x218.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/galaxy-w21-324x235.png 324w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/galaxy-w21-696x506.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/galaxy-w21-578x420.png 578w" sizes="(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px" /></a></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The move by Samsung relating to its Chinese version of the Galaxy Z Fold3 follows a visible trend by the maker in naming alternative models for its China offerings in recent years. From 2019, Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Fold and Z Fold2 to China as the Galaxy W20 and W21.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">When the W22 finally berths in China, we also expect it to be supplied exclusively by China Telecom. Not much has been divulged about the W22, but it is known that it will sport a single black color and have 512GB of internal storage. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 is expected to go official in August 2021, and it is unlikely that the W22 5G will be unveiled before then. Not much is known yet about the possible price of the W22 5G, as what is out there is based on speculations. However, we can be confident that the W22 will be priced above CNY 20,000 (~$3,000) which is the amount the W21 was sold in China.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Samsung is yet to put out any public statement either refuting or acknowledging the news, fuelling the speculations further. The coming weeks will however establish the authenticity of the reports relating to the Samsung Galaxy W22.</span></p>

The new transistor setup will enable IBM to fit 50 billion transistors in a tiny space the size of a fingernail. Current high-end chips like <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a>’s Snapdragon 888 and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a>’s A14 Bionic, use the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/5nm">5nm</a> process. However, the number of transistors that these chipsets can pack in a fingernail space does not exceed 12 billion.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/ibm-2nm-chip.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-388532" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/ibm-2nm-chip.jpg?x10805" alt="IBM" width="1200" height="675" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/ibm-2nm-chip.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/ibm-2nm-chip-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/ibm-2nm-chip-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/ibm-2nm-chip-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/ibm-2nm-chip-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/ibm-2nm-chip-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/ibm-2nm-chip-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></a></p>
<p>This milestone by IBM could prove to be a game-changer in the semiconductor industry. The company says battery life in smartphones deploying the 2nm technology will be greatly improved up to four times the current lifespan of batteries inside phones using the 7nm process. The implication is that, according to IBM, your smartphone will only need charging once in four days, on average.</p>
<p>The number of transistors that can fit in a square-mm space is an indicator of the strength and efficiency of the chip. The more powerful and energy-efficient chipset is the one that has a higher rating in this regard. There is a substantial performance increase and power savings using chips with a higher number of transistors per square mm.</p>
<p>The IBM concept is driven by the Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography technology. The process produces lines outside the visible light spectrum, which are used to create the patterns used to build circuits. The GAA architecture also enables superior electrical signals to pass through and between other transistors on a single chip.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/wafer.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-388533" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/wafer.jpg?x10805" alt="IBM" width="279" height="225" /></a></p>
<p>IBM also says that it is actively pursuing research along the 2nm process and a rollout of the chips produced through the process is not likely in the next few years. TSMC last year revealed it is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/04/25/tsmc-is-working-on-2nm-chips-expected-to-release-by-2025/">working on 2nm chips</a> but the rollout is scheduled for 2025.</p>
