This is the next generation version of the existing Snapdragon 810 chip and the company has a lot of expectations from this new age chip.</p>
<p>The Snapdragon 820 will use custom Kryo cores instead of the standard ARM ones. While the company had been using custom cores for some time, in Snapdragon 810, Qualcomm decided to go with standard ARM cores. That clearly didn&#8217;t work out well for the company as its back with custom cores for its new generation version.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-qualcomm.png?x23692"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-63481" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-qualcomm.png?x23692" alt="snapdragon qualcomm" width="378" height="409" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-qualcomm.png 378w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-qualcomm-277x300.png 277w" sizes="(max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px" /></a></p>
<p>The 820 is a quad-core Kryo CPU which comes with the company&#8217;s Symphony System Manager, an intelligent resource management tool for Snapdragon that extends control of task scheduling and power management across the entire processor. The custom cores promises up to twice the performance as compared to the cores inside the Snapdragon 810. Also, they are going to be much more efficient, translating into better battery life. The efficient Hexagon 680 DSP should further help in increasing the battery life of the device powered by the 820 SoC.</p>
<p>In the GPU department, Qualcomm went with the new generation Adreno 530 which promises 40 percent improvement in graphics performance and efficiency as compared to the previous generation Adreno 430. The new chip also comes with the Spectra ISP which now supports sensors up to 28MP in size.</p>
<p>In the connectivity department, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 brings the latest X12 LTE modem which supports Cat. 12 download speeds (600MBps max) and Cat.13 upload speeds (150MBps). This is made possible thanks to the tri-carrier aggregation for downloads and dual-carrier aggregation for uploads. The chip is also the first commercial CPU to support the latest LTE-U technology which enables it to access LTE connections in both licensed spectrum and unlicensed spectrum. Finally, for Wi-Fi, the chip supports the 2&#215;2 MU-MIMO 802.11ac connections.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-820-features.png?x23692"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-63482" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-820-features.png?x23692" alt="snapdragon 820 features" width="856" height="353" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-820-features.png 856w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-820-features-300x124.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-820-features-600x247.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-820-features-640x264.png 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/snapdragon-820-features-681x281.png 681w" sizes="(max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px" /></a></p>
<p>The Snapdragon 820 chip comes with the new Quick Charge 3.0 technology which is four times faster than traditional charging methods and up to 38 percent faster than Quick Charge 2.0.</p>
<p>On paper, with the custom Kryo cores clocked at 2.2GHz, Adreno 530 and X12 LTE modem, the Snapdragon 820 turns out to be a powerhouse. However, we will have to wait for a couple of months at least to see its real life performance given that the first <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2015/09/15/snapdragon-820-powered-smartphones-to-be-available-only-by-q1-2016/">820 powered smartphones will only meet us by early next year</a>.</p>

The company particularly stressed on performance and efficiency in this new chip. Also, the chip is reportedly made with high-end performance and slim smartphone design in mind.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-cpu-tiers-examples.jpg?x23692"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-57996" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-cpu-tiers-examples.jpg?x23692" alt="snapdragon-cpu-tiers-examples" width="688" height="427" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-cpu-tiers-examples.jpg 688w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-cpu-tiers-examples-300x186.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-cpu-tiers-examples-677x420.jpg 677w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-cpu-tiers-examples-640x397.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-cpu-tiers-examples-681x423.jpg 681w" sizes="(max-width: 688px) 100vw, 688px" /></a></p>
<p>The cores inside the chipset is built for heterogeneous computing. This means that the chip will be able to combine different functional cores of the entire system including GPU, CPU and DSP cores to achieve high-end performance and efficiency at the same time. Usually, one or two cores are dedicated for a task, but Qualcomm believes heterogeneous computing is the right way to tackle all tasks.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-820-kryo-cpu.jpg?x23692"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-57997" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-820-kryo-cpu.jpg?x23692" alt="snapdragon-820-kryo-cpu" width="344" height="379" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-820-kryo-cpu.jpg 344w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/snapdragon-820-kryo-cpu-272x300.jpg 272w" sizes="(max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Qualcomm has reportedly used eight custom Kryo cores inside the Snapdragon 820. In case you remember, the Snapdragon 800 series chips used the custom Krait CPUs. The Kryo cores are built on the latest 14nm FinFET technology which maximizes power efficiency. These cores are clocked at 2.2GHz which the company claims will deliver up to 2 times the performance. Even the efficiency increases up to 2x times as compared to <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2015/06/18/snapdragon-810-v2-1-check-out-whats-changed/">Snapdragon 810</a>. The Kryo CPU along with Adreno 530 GPU and Hexagon 680 DSP will make sure that the chip performs better than most other SoCs in the market.</p>
<p>While we wait for the official launch of the Snapdragon 820 inside a smartphone, today, the chip was reportedly spotted on AnTuTu with a score of 83,774 points! That&#8217;s pretty impressive considering other chips, even the Exynos 7420 find it hard to cross the 70,000 mark. However, the configuration shows that the phone had a FHD 1080p resolution, so if the resolution is bumped up to 2K we may see the score drop down a bit.</p>
<p>Still, if the device, code named Green Orange X1 Pro does feature MSM8996 Snapdragon 820 chipset, then the performance is definitely impressive. Since Qualcomm has officially revealed more details about the chip, now we can&#8217;t wait to see this chip inside a real device.</p>
