Although it has not been confirmed whether it will be a laptop or a tablet, it is certain that it will be a powerful machine. Now, thanks to the Geekbench listing, we’ve learned some significant details of this rumoured model called Lenovo QRD.

According to the Geekbench v5 results, the Lenovo QRD uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx chipset, however, it isn’t the old Gen chipset. Rather, it is the Gen 3 chipset that is much more powerful than the Gen 2 chipset.

For starters, the original Snapdragon 8cx was launched back in 2018 and later in 2020, the Gen 2 SoC was announced. Now, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 will soon launch and will power many upcoming laptops and tablets.

Coming back to the QRD, the laptop boots on the latest Windows 11 Home out of the box and has scored 1010 single-core points, 5335 multi-core points. As of now, we aren’t sure about the device’s other specs and design. But, since the laptop/tablet has passed the Geekbench certification, the launch seems to be in the pipeline.

Today, the third-gen chipset might have appeared on the Geekbench benchmarks.

A Geekbench 5 listing shows a benchmark of a device codenamed “Qualcomm QRD”. The device has a processor that is shown as “Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3”. It is an octa-core chipset and has a base frequency of 2.69GHz.

This is in line with Roland’s report who said that the chipset would be clocked at 2.7GHz. That is, if this is the third-gen 8cx, then it would have 4xGold+ cores at 2.7GHz and 4xGold cores clocked at 2.43GHz.

Anyway, the listing shows that the device scores 982 on single-core and 4,918 on multi-core categories. According to the Notebookcheck report, these scores match only 56% of Apple M1 performance. While the overall performance has improved, it looks like Qualcomm still needs a lot of catching to do with Apple.

That said, this particular benchmark isn’t necessarily verified as the third-gen Snapdragon 8cx chipset although it has the identifier ‘ARMv8’ on it. And even if this is the one, the sample could be of a prototype so let’s wait for an official word on the performance data.

The upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx chipset is said to be used primarily in Windows notebooks including the 2-in-1 machines. It will probably have an integrated NPU to handle AI-based tasks with up to 15 TOP(Trillions of Operations) of performance.

All these are hinting towards a competitive iteration from Qualcomm and only time will tell if it will up the ante and play a tug of war with its rivals in 2021.

The move has been well-received by the customers and the company plans to completely shift to its own Apple Silicon platform soon.

Now, as per the reports, Qualcomm is also working on a next-generation Snapdragon 8cx chipset with an aim to take on the likes of Apple M1. It will be used for Windows notebooks as well as 2-in-1 devices.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx hasn’t matched up to the performance offered by Intel and AMD and thus the devices powered by the said chipset could be used for light workloads only. The Microsoft Surface Pro X is powered by the SD8cx SoC.

With the next-generation Snapdragon 8cx chip, we are expecting the company to make it more powerful. As per the reports, the chipset is currently being developed and has at least two different variants.

The Snapdragon SC8280XP, one of the two variants being tested, reportedly has four absolute high-end cores called “Gold +” running at 2.7GHz. These cores are paired with four more high-end cores, which are referred to as “Gold” cores clocked at 2.43Ghz.

This means that the company is ditching the energy-saving cores in favor of higher performance. This leads us to believe that the chipset may not score much points when it comes to power efficiency.

The chipset is also said to include an integrated NPU to handle AI-based tasks with up to 15 TOPs of performance. The testing is being carried out on devices with 14-inch display and 32GB of RAM, running Windows operating system.

Unfortunately, exactly what areas Qualcomm made improvements on is currently unknown, but the company did promise that the successor offers “generational performance and efficiency gains.” Furthermore, the company also focused on the chip’s capabilities, especially in terms of rivaling chips from Intel. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8cx 2 5G offers significant performance gains over 10th Gen i5 processors, and even Intel’s Lakefield chips, which were made to rival Qualcomm’s efforts in the laptop market.

The 8cx offers an improved battery life with the ARM powered laptops lasting a full 25 hours on continuous use. This is quite an impressive feat if it actually holds up in real world tests. Notably, Qualcomm is also offering the Snapdragon 8cx with other features like Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 support, Qualcomm’s Aqstic audio technology, and support for dual external 4K monitors at 60 fps.

While the branding does have “5G” in it, the 2nd gen 8cx doesn’t actually change a lot in terms of connectivity. The chip still offers the same X24 LTE modem and X55 5G modem options like the original 8cx. The ultrabook market is going to face stiff competition, with Intel launching its 11th Gen Tiger Lake processors, the thin and light laptop category will have some heated rivalry in the market.

The 7nm chipset few notebooks like the Lenovo Flex 5G and Samsung Galaxy Book S. Fresh information shared by Winfuture.de publication reveals that the U.S. based chip manufacturer is working on an enhanced version of Snapdragon 8cx. It is expected to fuel upcoming Windows on ARM devices.

The ’SC8180X’ internal model number is associated with the Snapdragon 8cx. The publication claims that the ‘SC8180XP’ model number that has appeared in the import and export databases suggests that it could be an enhanced version of the Snapdragon 8cx. It is unclear whether the ‘P’ letter in the model number stands for ‘Plus’ edition.

The publication claims that the SC8180XP is an octa-core processor with four Kryo 495 Gold (Cortex-A76) CPU cores clocking at 3.15GHz and four Kryo 495 Silver (Cortex-A55) CPU cores working at 1.8GHz. The SoC will include 718MHz Adreno 680 graphics which is also available with the Snapdragon 8cx. It is unclear whether there is any change in the speed of the GPU as Qualcomm has never revealed the clocking speed of the Adreno 680 graphics.

In October 2019, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Pro X 2-in-1 convertible PC. The device came with a slightly improved version of the Snapdragon 8cx. The custom chip was dubbed as Microsoft SQ1 since it was exclusively made available on the Surface Pro X.

The Snapdragon 8cx Plus is expected to deliver faster performance than Microsoft SQ1. Since there is no official information available on the Snapdragon 8cx Plus, it is advisable to digest the report with a grain of salt.
