There have been speculations it may be a chipset from MediaTek while others say it will be supplied by Qualcomm. This morning, Redmi’s General Manager, Lu Weibing, confirmed that the phone will be powered by a Qualcomm processor.

The company executive had quoted a Weibo post made by the official Redmi account. The original post said the Redmi K30 is the first device to be powered by a new generation 5G processor. This chipset is said to be strong in all areas and not only in achieving a high benchmark score.

Lu Weibing then quoted the post with a statement that roughly translates into “Looking forward to the latest Qualcomm processors”, confirming that the Redmi K30 will be powered by a Qualcomm chipset.

This chipset is expected to be the SM7250 5G processor with support for SA and NSA networks. Qualcomm is expected to announce the new processor today at the Snapdragon Tech Summit holding in Hawaii. The keynote will begin at 7 PM GMT (12:30 AM IST on Wednesday, December 4).

The Redmi K30 5G will have a 6.6-inch FHD+ display with a punch hole for two cameras. and a 120Hz refresh rate. It will also have quad rear cameras, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and NFC. Its battery capacity is rumored to be either 4500mAh or 5000mAh with support for 27W fast charging. The phone should run MIUI 11 out of the box.

Qualcomm, on the other hand, says it will announce Snapdragon 600 and Snapdragon 700 5G processors next year which means it will be playing catch up to Samsung. New details about the first of that chipset have surfaced.

According to a Weibo post by @Digital Chat Station, the Qualcomm SM7250 will cost between $60 to $70 while its MediaTek competitor, the MT6885, is said to be priced between $40 to $50. Both chipsets will be dual-mode 5G chips and are already being tested by OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi (Redmi).

Based on this, buyers should expect to pay more for 5G mid-range smartphones since the processors cost more. This should not be a surprise as 5G flagships cost more than their 4G variants, so it is expected that the same will apply to mid-range phones too.

We still don’t know the specs of Qualcomm’s chipset but it has been reported that it will be a 7nm chipset. We expect more details to surface in the weeks leading to its announcement.
