During the MWC 2025 event, there were a bunch of cool tech products that were unveiled. But among the various announcements, we also got solar powered tech that boasted an alternative charging method for popular mobile devices like smartphones, laptops, and others. So here are unique tech products that you might have missed out on.

Infinix SolarEnergy-Reserving Technology

Smartphone maker Infinix just unveiled a new method for power management for smartphones. The company debuted the SolarEnergy-Reserving Technology uses perovskite photovoltaic technology along with AI algorithms. This concept allows smartphones to capture and store light energy from indoor and outdoor sources. In other words, the tech can revolutionize mobile energy by using solar power integration.

Infinix employs this tech by pairing a device with a special phone case that seamlessly transfers energy through discreet contact points, ensuring continuous power availability. Thanks to Sunflower Wireless Charging technology, the brand also adjusts power transmission over a range of 3 meters. Furthermore, this system also has emergency power access for power access even during outages. The brand believes that future devices may support sustainable charging tech.

Lenovo Yoga Solar PC Concept

Lenovo’s MWC booth had some unique new products that employed solar energy. The best example of this is the Yoga Solar PC Proof of Concept. This prototype laptop model has the top lid covered with a large solar panel that can directly absorb sunlight. As per official claims, the Yoga Solar PC Concept can offer up to one hour of video playback from being under direct sunlight for just 20 minutes.

Solar powered gadgets aren’t new but these show a practical way of using them on popular mobile computing devices. Additionally, the notebook uses a Dynamic Solar Tracking system that can optimize energy absorption by adjusting the panel’s setting based on the sunlight’s intensity.

Lenovo Solar Power Kit

Another tech product from Lenovo that uses solar energy is the Lenovo Solar Power Kit. As the name suggests, it is a power kit that was designed specifically for outdoor use. This aims to offer portable and reliable power to keep devices charged even when you’re at work or out on an adventure.

Solar Powered Lenovo Keyboard

Lastly, we have a brand new Lenovo keyboard. The popular PC maker showcased a new keyboard that features a solar panel on the top. Similar to the other products that Lenovo debuted at MWC 2025, this gadget also powers through sunlight. This makes it perfect for outdoor use as well.

Some researchers at the University of Kaunas, Lithuania have developed indoor solar cells with 37% charging efficiency. It has been a challenge previously to convert artificial light to energy when compared to solar energy conversion. The Lithuania-based research group has developed a new type of perovskite solar cell with high efficiency and capability for drawing power from artificial light.

Current photovoltaic cells hardly work indoors where artificial light with a smaller spectrum and less energy is present. There are a lot of small devices such as smart sensors, digital clocks, and similar low-energy devices that function at night when solar energy is not available. The new indoor solar cells therefore provide new vistas for many possibilities. The cells could provide power for these devices based on minimal artificial light which is almost always available at night.

The new solar cells were developed to be efficient and capable of handling energy from a limited light spectrum. The material is made from an organic semiconductor combined with perovskite resulting in a decent energy conversion rate. The light source used in the experiments conducted by the research team was a warm white LED with a temperature of 3,000 Kelvin, corresponding to the typical room temperature for living rooms. The spectrum is similar to that of natural light but it lacks infrared radiation. Apart from a special layer of perovskite, the cell utilizes thiazole molecules to conduct positive charges. The extensive experiments yielded a 37% efficiency using light from a standard LED. The efficiency of the new solar cell technology is just 19% when utilizing solar energy.

There are no indications yet on the timelines for the transition of indoor solar cell technology into a commercial product. The optics are however good that the model will become a reality later.

Panasonic will be ending the production of its solar cells and panels, as per a new report. The company was the former leader in the market but is now withdrawing due to intense competition from Chinese rivals.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, the Japanese tech giant is planning to step away from the solar cells and panel market due to Chinese rivals. These competitors can produce these parts at a lower cost and have thus caused intense competition, even in its home market. The report states that Panasonic will be quitting the manufacturing of solar cells and panels as early as March 2022 from its factories in Malaysia and Japan’s Shimane Prefecture.

The move would mark the complete exit of the solar manufacturing business from the company, which also ended a partnership with the US based Tesla for the production of solar cells back in 2020. Furthermore, Panasonic will be procuring solar panels from other manufacturers to stay in the power industry, like undertaking businesses that would have it install generation systems for residential purposes.

Due to Chinese manufacturers of solar panels, the price has fallen to about a third of that during 2012. In other words, Chinese suppliers and manufacturers have essentially forced out Japanese manufacturing out of production, with Panasonic’s solar business being in the red in recent times. This also made worse by the fact that domestic demand is also stagnating, causing its market share to decline even further.

Chinese smartphone makers are on the spree of launching unique smartphones with innovative design. Xiaomi, a China-based smartphone maker has patented a smartphone design that packs a solar panel on the phone’s back.

In July last year, Xiaomi Mobile Software had filed a patent application with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) for a smartphone having a solar cell module. The patent included a few sketches of the phone’s design, giving us a look at what we should expect if it ever makes it to the market.

The sketch shows that the smartphone comes with a no-notch display but it’s not clear where the front-facing camera is placed. There’s also no indication of the pop-up module for the front camera. The company could be opting for an in-display camera technology for this one, the technology for which has already been showcased by Xiaomi.

On the backside, the smartphone comes with a dual-camera module with the camera sensors placed vertically and having an LED flash in between both the sensors. There’s no fingerprint sensor on the back panel, confirming the in-display fingerprint sensor module.

The solar panel is the most noticeable part of the phone, which covers the majority of the phone’s back panel. Surprisingly, the solar panel is thinner than the camera module. Through this integration, it will be possible to charge through the phone via solar energy.

There are a few other companies that have explored the idea of a solar-powered smartphone and now Xiaomi is also working towards the same. However, there’s no information available regarding the phone’s launch. While the patent has been granted, this does not guarantee that the company will actually produce the phone and bring it to the market. It just means that the company is exploring the idea and is working towards it.
