According to a </span><a href="https://www.sony-semicon.co.jp/e/news/2021/2021121601.html"><span style="font-weight: 400">press release</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> (via </span><a href="https://www.androidauthority.com/sony-stacked-camera-sensor-smartphones-3076490/"><i><span style="font-weight: 400">Android Authority</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400">) by the firm, it recently announced its latest breakthrough in stacked image sensor technology at the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting, which began on December 11, 2021.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-346825 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Sony-Logo-Featured-1024x608.jpg?x44794" alt="Sony Logo Featured" width="696" height="413" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Sony-Logo-Featured-1024x608.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Sony-Logo-Featured-300x178.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Sony-Logo-Featured-768x456.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Sony-Logo-Featured-696x413.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Sony-Logo-Featured-1068x634.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Sony-Logo-Featured-707x420.jpg 707w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Sony-Logo-Featured-1920x1140.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Sony says that it has developed the world’s first stacked CMOS image sensor technology with 2-layer transistor pixels. In simpler words, the company has improved the existing stacked sensor technology by making some changes to achieve better performance.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The firm explains that photodiodes and pixel transistors of conventional CMOS image sensors occupy the same pixel substrate layer. </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Sony/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Sony</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> has made changes to this arrangement by using separate pixel substrate layers for photodiodes and pixel transistors respectively.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-431567 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Sony-stacked-CMOS-image-sensor-technology-with-2-layer-transistor-pixels-1024x556.jpg?x44794" alt="Sony stacked CMOS image sensor technology with 2-layer transistor pixels" width="696" height="378" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Sony-stacked-CMOS-image-sensor-technology-with-2-layer-transistor-pixels-1024x556.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Sony-stacked-CMOS-image-sensor-technology-with-2-layer-transistor-pixels-300x163.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Sony-stacked-CMOS-image-sensor-technology-with-2-layer-transistor-pixels-768x417.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Sony-stacked-CMOS-image-sensor-technology-with-2-layer-transistor-pixels-696x378.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Sony-stacked-CMOS-image-sensor-technology-with-2-layer-transistor-pixels-1068x580.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Sony-stacked-CMOS-image-sensor-technology-with-2-layer-transistor-pixels-774x420.jpg 774w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Sony-stacked-CMOS-image-sensor-technology-with-2-layer-transistor-pixels.jpg 1216w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The Japanese company claims that its new sensor technology doubles saturation signal, which in turn, widens the dynamic range. Additionally, since the amp transistor size can be increased with this tech, noise during dark scenarios is also reduced.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Last but not least, Sony states that its stacked CMOS image sensor technology with 2-layer transistor pixels improves the properties of pixels at their current size as well as smaller. This suggests that the firm may finally release its own 100MP+ sensors like </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Samsung/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Samsung</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> to make use of this tech.</span></p>
