Sony PlayStation is apparently planning on establishing itself in the lucrative space of the live service games market. The company’s PlayStation exclusive games are best known for some of the best narrative driven titles is reportedly planning to enter live service games with a brand new franchise.

Sony PlayStation is seeking to step into the live service games market

The PlayStation console brings access to several single player campaign titles that have received been widely accredited. This includes games like God of War, Horizon series, The Last of Us, and more. But, it appears that the brand is planning to expand into the highly successful strategy that many other companies employ with the live service model. For those unaware, a live service game is basically a game that works with internet connectivity and typically offers some degree of multiplayer element.

These titles are also usually free to play and make money directly through sales on in game cosmetic items or other forms of paid DLCs. One of the reasons for their success is the fact a studio needs to make a game and simply update the content offered to retain their playerbase. A great example of this is the massively successful Fortnite from Epic and the Destiny franchise by Bungie. Now, it appears that Sony is seeking to make some changes with its own formula as well. Notably, the news also arrives as the company even looks to launch a new handheld game streaming device that works off of the PS5.

Previously, 88 percent of the company’s games followed the traditional model, while only 12 percent were live service. But it recently revealed that its latest investment strategy will have this ratio flip to 40 percent and 60 percent respectively. In other words, it is going to lean heavily towards the live service model. Furthermore, it is even planning on launching a brand new franchise for this move. It promised to offer a “a glimpse at several new creations from PlayStation Studios” soon.

Sony Opens Its First PlayStation Exclusive Store In India

Sony has reportedly opened its first-ever Playstation store in India. This means that buyers can now get access to the brand’s consoles in the country. Until now, the Japanese brand had been selling its consoles via various online and offline retailers meaning that customers had to rely on Amazon, Flipkart, Reliance Digital, and more. The news about Sony’s first PS store in India has been shared by industry insider Rishi Alwani.

The first dedicated Sony Playstation store in India is opened in Delhi. It seems like the Japanese brand has partnered with a third-party retailer called DT Zone. Alwani shared images of the currently up-and-running store in Punjabi Bagh, Delhi.

The newly opened offline store looks like a one-stop shop for Playstation customers. This means that customers can expect to get access to the PS consoles, Dual Sense gaming controllers, headsets, as well as some game titles directly from the store. Customers might also have the option to purchase a PlayStation membership from the offline store as there is an image highlighting membership plans. However, it’s worth noting that there is no official word on this.

The exclusive PlayStation store in India is great news to fans as they won’t have to rely on third-party retailers. Additionally, Sony recently slashed the prices of the PlayStation 5 (both standard and digital edition) by Rs 5,000 for a limited period. The expiry date of the discounted price is unknown, but the standard variant can be availed at Rs 49,990 while the digital edition costs Rs 39,990.

Sony PlayStation Plus Extra & Premium India pricing revealed

Yesterday, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the new videogame subscription service for the PlayStation dubbed the PlayStation Plus. The service is Sony’s answer to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass and is expected to launch across most PlayStation Network territories by the first half of 2022.

Now, ahead of its launch, the Indian pricing of the subscription service has leaked revealing how much the new PlayStation Plus will cost across different tiers. According to a tweet by Industry insider Rishi Alwani, the new service will start at Rs 800 per month ($11) for the PlayStation Plus Extra subscription.

The PlayStation Plus Premium subscription on the other hand is said to be priced at Rs 1,000 per month ($13), Rs 2,500 ($33) for a quarterly subscription, and Rs 6,000 ($79) for a 12 months subscription.

For those unaware, the PlayStation Plus Extra will provide players with a catalog of 400 downloadable games including blockbuster hits from the PlayStation Studios catalog and third-party partners.

On the other hand, the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription provides all the benefits from the Extra tier and adds up to 340 additional games including PS3 games available via cloud streaming and beloved classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2, and PSP generations. This tier will also offer time-limited game trials so so customers can try select games before they buy.

At launch, Sony plans to include titles such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal to the PlayStation Plus service. Yesterday, we reported that Sony is preparing to introduce a new videogame subscription service for the PlayStation this week. Now, the company has officially announced this service, revealing that it is a fusion between the PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now and retains the PlayStation Plus name.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) states that the new subscription service will be made available in three tiers. The first is the PlayStation Plus Essential, which is basically the service in its current state and provides users with at least 2 free games every month along with access to multiplayer.

Sony to introduce a Game Pass like Subscription Service this week

Sony is preparing to introduce a new videogame subscription service for the PlayStation this week. The service has been under development with the codename “Spartacus” and is said to be Sony’s answer to the Xbox Game Pass.

According to a Bloomberg report, the new service will combine the Playstation Now and Playstation Plus services and will offer multiple tiers which will include modern games and classics from older PlayStation eras.

The Xbox Game Pass by Microsoft is a roaring success due to the value for money it provides. With a monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or yearly subscription, users can download and play any game that has been made available on the Game Pass. In this regard, Microsoft does an excellent job by offering a massive library of games as well as making top titles available on day one of the release (like Halo Infinite) on the Game Pass. Sony, however, is not expected to go this route and will likely keep some games purchasable only for a certain amount of time after release. So users might not be able to experience upcoming titles like God of War Ragnarök on this service anytime soon.

Another major selling point of the Xbox Game Pass is its availability on PC. This area will also be a challenge for Sony as they have a considerably longer list of console-exclusive games compared to Xbox. The company has recently announced that some of the previously Playstation Exclusive games will soon come to PC, however, it will likely take some time before Sony is able to make a comprehensive enough library to attract PC gamers.

PS5 to restock in India but in limited quantity: Report

Ever since its release, the PlayStation 5 has been in short supply due to multiple reasons like low productions due to the ongoing chip shortage, global pandemic, and scalpers buying up all the stock made available in the market.

Now, a new Gadgets360 report has revealed that Sony India will soon restock the PlayStation 5 in the country. The news comes from an industry insider Rishi Alwani who has revealed that the restock will occur on January 18th and will be more limited than usual.

The console is also said to go on pre-order on major retailers like Amazon, Croma, Flipkart, GameLoot, Games The Shop, Reliance Digital, and Vijay Sales. The console can also be pre-ordered on the Sony Center website ShopAtSC.

As for the customers already in pre-order queues, the major retailers have not provided any details on when we can expect the PS5 deliveries to commence. The Sony Central website states that the company intends to deliver the allocated stocks to its customers around February 8th, so we expect other online retailers to start the delivery process around the same timeframe.

As of writing this article, no PS5 units have been spotted for pre-order on major online retail sites like Amazon, Flipkart, and Chroma, so keep a lookout for opportunities to book a PS5.

In the meantime, Sony is dealing with the shortages by increasing production for their last-gen PS4 consoles to keep players engaged in the PlayStation ecosystem till the company figures out a way to increase PS5 supplies. But for now, it looks like the shortages will continue till 2024.

Sony faces lawsuit for limiting purchase of games on PlayStation Store

Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC is apparently being sued for running an unlawful monopoly by restricting purchases of PlayStation games to its in house store. The news arrives from a consumers that have filed for the lawsuit.

According to a Bloomberg report, the Japanese tech giant might be facing a class action lawsuit by gamers that stated that the company has stopped allowing third party like Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart, from selling download codes for PlayStation games two years ago. This has allowed the Sony PlayStation Store to become the only official source for the purchase of any digital PlayStation games. In other words, creating a monopoly in the market.

According to the consumers that have proposed the lawsuit, Sony’s monopoly allows it to charge supracompetitive prices for digital PlayStation games, which are significantly higher than their physical counterparts sold in a competitive retail market, and significantly higher than they would be in a competitive retail market for digital games.’ The sources further added that consumers can end up spending as much as 175 percent more for downloadable games than the sames ones that features a disk.

Unfortunately, Sony has yet to respond to any queries regarding this lawsuit as of right now. The case has been filed with the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (San Francisco). The 100 million marks is indeed a milestone for the brand as the app only supports the PS4 and PS5. Thus, since the PS5 hasn’t seen so many users yet, most of the downloads would likely have come majorly from PS4 users. Sony started consistently offering huge discounts on PS4 games after the launch of the PS5. That may have attracted more users.

In case you don’t know, the Playstation app for Android affords users easy access to the Sony PlayStation store where games can be purchased. Since you don’t need to enter the store through your console but right from your smartphone, it gives users the leverage to swiftly attend to any available deal. The app is a vital one for fans of the Sony Playstation but some fans were left fuming with the latest redesign and subsequently, Sony was forced to reintroduce the old wishlist feature.

The Playstation app is available for free on the Play Store. There is equally an iOS version for iPhone users. Imported units of Sony PlayStation 5 won’t be eligible for Warranty in India: Report

Sony’s PlayStation 5(PS5) officially went on sale on November 12 in countries like the US, Japan. In fact, retailers are stocking the units in more numbers due to a surge in demand in markets like Europe. However, the next-gen console is yet to officially go on sale in India. Ahead of this, people have started buying the imported units through unauthorized channels. And Sony India thinks it isn’t a good idea.

As reported by MensXP(via Gadgets360), a Sony PlayStation India representative has responded to the request regarding the warranty policies of imported units. He suggests customers to check for the Sony India Warranty Card while purchasing PlayStation products within India. Precisely, the company allows users to claim warranty benefits for Sony India products that are certified by BIS and have a valid Indian Warranty Card.

This suggests that the imported ones won’t be eligible for a warranty inside the country. This is because as quoted by the representative, the Indian retail units that come with a local warranty card are certified by BIS. However, the imported ones aren’t and this negates the policy of Sony PlayStation India. Hence, this sends a clear message to people who are buying non-Indian units as high as ₹90,000 without a warranty.

Plus, this is a no-brainer as Sony has been following this for earlier generations(PS4) as well. In any case, it is highly advisable to buy Sony PlayStation products from India with the official Indian Warranty card. It is understandable that the console is highly attractive especially after the price announcement. However, as Sony is trying its best to fulfill the user’s demand, decisions like these will only harm the users as they are left out to dry in case of any issue.

Anyway, it’s already been one month since the prices for India were announced but PlayStation 5 hasn’t got an official release date yet. But according to the report, it will be available on official retailers like Amazon, Flipkart, Croma, Reliance Digital, ShopatSC.com, and Games The Shop. Besides, the next-gen console comes with a revamped white and black design, upgraded performance, storage(SSD), and a DualSense Controller.
