We know that Sony makes a 16GB RAM + 512GB variant of the device, but for some reason, they have opted to not make this configuration available in the US.

Sony has recently introduced its new flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 V, in global markets, highlighting its unique Exmor T for mobile stacked sensor that promises a significant improvement in low-light photography. Along with this, the device comes with top-tier specifications, including a 4K OLED display and a state-of-the-art Snapdragon chipset. To determine if the device is worth its price tag of €1,399, let’s delve into its features in detail.

Design and display

Not much has changed in the physical appearance of the Xperia 1 V compared to its predecessor, however, the device is much sturdier and easy to handle this time around.

It features a boxy frame with flat edges and a pill-shaped vertical camera island. The back and the front are both covered with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 bringing its toughness to the next level. Along with that, the back and the side frame feature a grippy texture which is always appreciated on an expensive device.

The device comes with a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display boasting a 120Hz refresh rate and an aspect ratio of 21:9. The display has moderate bezels at the top and bottom, and the front camera is located in the top bezel. The device comes with an IP68 water and dust resistance rating despite featuring a 3.5mm audio jack and a microSD card slot. The device has an improved set of front-facing speakers equipped with a new amplifier to deliver a more dynamic and richer sound.

Performance & software

The Xperia 1 V boasts impressive hardware, including a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. What sets Sony apart is their inclusion of a microSD card slot, allowing for easy storage expansion. Large smartphone cameras generate a significant amount of heat, but the Xperia 1 V tackles this issue with a 60% larger heat diffusion sheet volume than its predecessor.

With a 5,000mAh battery, the Sony Xperia 1 V supports 30W wired charging, which can recharge the device to 50% in 30 minutes. The smartphone also features wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. According to Sony, the battery will retain a minimum of 80% of its capacity after three years of use.

Out of the box, the phone runs on Android 13 and has minimal bloatware. Instead, Sony has included its pro-grade creator-centric apps such as Photography Pro, Videography Pro, Cinema Pro, and Music Pro. Sony has introduced a convenient change in its Photo Pro and Video Pro apps, allowing their user interfaces to be displayed vertically. This modification will enhance the user experience of taking pictures and videos in portrait mode.

Camera

As always, the flagship Xperia’s key selling point is the camera system, and this time around it is quite special. The primary camera onboard is a 52MP unit with an F/1.9 lens and a 1/1.35” sensor. Sony calls it the Exmor T stacked sensor and it is 70% larger than its predecessor. The photos however are shot in 48MP due to the 4.3:3 aspect ratio, which gets further binned to 12MP images in normal mode.

Sony has separated the photodiode and transistor, placing them on distinct layers that are stacked upon one another. This has allowed the company to independently adjust the size of each component, resulting in a significant improvement in the amount of light captured and reduced noise levels. According to Sony, the new camera sensor can perform twice as well in low light compared to its predecessor.

In addition to the primary camera, the Xperia 1 V retains the same 85-125mm F/2.3-F/2.8 12MP telephoto camera with continuous zoom as its predecessor. Alongside this, there is a 12MP sensor supporting the 16mm ultrawide camera, which features autofocus. The Time-of-Flight (TOF) sensor has been removed and replaced by AI algorithms for focusing purposes. The AI algorithms are also said to boost performance in modes such as Night Portrait, Daylight Portrait, and Night View.

Sony has introduced S-Cinetone for mobile mode, which enables users to capture videos using pre-set cinematic modes that generate professional, authentic colors without the requirement for post-recording color-grading. While on the topic of videos, the camera phone is able to record up to 4K videos in 120 frames per second. Sony’s Alpha camera features have also been included on the Xperia 1 V like the high-performance real-time AF, real-time Eye-AF, burst shooting, etc. Last but not least, the selfie camera has a 1/2.9” sensor capable of taking 12MP images.

Price & availability

Sony’s latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 V, will be released in black, platinum silver, and khaki green color options in late June. Specific market availability details are yet to be announced. The phone is priced at €1,399 in continental Europe and £1,299 in the UK. The cost for the US market is still to be confirmed.

Sony is set to launch the Xperia 1 V smartphone in Japan on May 11th. It will arrive as the successor to the last year’s Xperia 1 IV. The upcoming offering was recently spotted on a billboard revealing its design and some key information. Now, the smartphone’s pricing has been leaked for the Chinese market. 

Sony Xperia 1 V leaked price in China

As per the latest development, the Sony Xperia 1 V will carry a price tag of RMB 8,000 (~$1,160 or £919) in China. If this indeed turns out to be true, then the upcoming offering will be cheaper than the last generation Xperia 1 IV which was priced at RMB 8,499 (~$1,231). The price difference between the Xperia generations would surprisingly be near 6 percent. Xperia phones are quite popular in China, so it might be worth the risk for Sony to price the upcoming offering aggressively in the country. 

However, the aggressive pricing of the Sony Xperia 1 V doesn’t seem to be the case for global markets. It could possibly match the price of its predecessor. This would still be an attractive option for customers who wish to purchase the device since it will reportedly come with upgrades. 

The Sony Xperia 1 V is already confirmed to feature a next-generation sensor and next-generation imaging. Additionally, the billboard poster also had a text in Chinese that said ‘next-generation low-noise sensor’ (translated) hinting at the phone’s ability to shoot high-quality images under all lighting conditions. The smartphone’s design also corroborates with the leaked renders and it will arrive in White, Black, and Green color options. 

Core specifications of the Sony Xperia 1 V are expected to comprise a 120Hz 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED display and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC with 16GB RAM.

Huawei P60 Series and Huawei Mate X3

Huawei has confirmed to debut the Huawei P60 series in global markets on May 9 (Tuesday). It could be accompanied by the Huawei Mate X3.

The Huawei P60 lineup includes three models, namely P60, P60 Pro, and P60 Art. All three handsets come with the same LTPO 120Hz OLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip, and a 48MP main camera with variable aperture. The Art variant has overall better specs and a unique design.

Whereas, the Mate X3 pushes the foldable smartphone category forward with a thinner lightweight design along with support for adjustable hinge and water resistance. It arrives with a 7.85-inch inner display, a 6.4-inch cover screen, a 5x periscope camera, and more.

Poco F5 Series

The Poco F5 series is also set to go official on May 9 (Tuesday). The devices will be announced at 8 PM GMT+8.

The lineup comprises two models, such as Poco F5 and Poco F5 Pro. They are nothing but rebranded Redmi Note 12 Turbo and Redmi K60 for international markets.

The highlights of the vanilla variant include a Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 chipset, thin display bezels, 256GB standard storage, and more. On the other hand, the pro version will come with a QHD+ display, wireless charging, Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, and more.

Realme 11 Series

The Realme 11 series is scheduled to launch in China on May 10 (Wednesday) at 4 PM GMT+8. The lineup is expected to include three models, such as Realme 11, Realme 11 Pro, and Realme 11 Pro Plus.

The Pro Plus version will come with the best set of features. It will also sport a faux leather back and a circular camera island.

This device will arrive with a MediaTek Dimensity 7050 chip, a 120Hz curved display, a 200MP camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 100W fast charging support.

Google Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold

The Google I/O 2023 developer conference is planned to begin on May 10. The search giant is expected to unveil the Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold at the opening keynote at 10 AM PT.

Thanks to numerous leaks, we know almost everything about these upcoming Google hardware products. The Pixel 7a will arrive with a 6.1-inch FHD+ 90Hz OLED display, Tensor G2 SoC, IP67 rating, 64MP (wide) + 13MP (ultra-wide) dual camera system, 18W charging support, and more.

Although the name of the upcoming offering has not been explicitly revealed, it is expected to be the Sony Xperia 1 V.  The device will arrive as the successor to the last year’s Xperia 1 IV.

The Sony Xperia 1 V launch event will be live-streamed on the brand’s official YouTube channel. The company says that the upcoming Xperia phone will feature next-generation sensor and next-generation imaging. Apart from this, Sony has not revealed any additional details about the smartphone. 

The Sony Xperia 1 V surfaced in leaked renders as well as a live image in February earlier this year. The smartphone will come with a similar design as its predecessor. It will have a tall aspect ratio with minimal screen bezels and a sleek look. The right edge of the phone houses volume rocker buttons, a power button with an integrated fingerprint scanner, and a camera shutter button. The back panel has a protruding vertically stacked camera module. It accommodates two sensors, a periscope lens, and an LED flash. 

As for the core specifications, the Sony Xperia 1 V is expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor coupled with up to 16GB RAM. The camera setup is rumored to comprise a 12MP main, 12MP periscope, and 48MP ultra-wide-angle lenses. A new report has indicated that the Sony Xperia 1 V will not come in a more compact setup than its predecessor. The Xperia 1 V had previously been rumored to be smaller than the Xperia 1 IV but the new reports contradict this. The leaked details of the yet-to-be-released Sony flagship included a schematic of the smartphone.

The Sony Xperia 1 V is expected to be released later this year and Weibo leaker, Zackbuks has hinted that it will not be smaller. The tipster has had a run of bold hits in recent times and he provided a schematic diagram of the flagship. The leaked dimensions of the smartphone are 164.68 x 70.89 x 8.54 which is different from an earlier leak back in February by @onleaks. The original Xperia 1 model measures 167 x 72 x 8.2 mm, with subsequent models slightly smaller. The weights have also varied across the generations of the Xperia 1 with a deviation of around 5g.

The February leak was premised on the information that Sony had overhauled the design of the smartphone with a narrower and thicker chassis. The Xperia 1 V will be slightly thicker than its predecessor but retains a similar height and width.

Sony will likely release the Xperia 1 V in May 2023 and a sequential distribution to other markets could be deployed. There are no official details yet from Sony but we expect the full specs of the Xperia 1 V flagship to surface soon.

There have been several new Xperia 1 V rumors, but it seems like one of them is not entirely reliable. A potential Sony Xperia 1 V has reportedly been benchmarked on Geekbench once more; however, despite the best efforts of certain fans, the initial record appears to remain hidden from the general public.

According to SumahoDigest, a typically trustworthy source, the purported Geekbench entry is for the “Sony XQ-DT72” model, which is assumed to be an Xperia 1 for 2023. The OpenCL score for GPU testing is 11,647 points, which is essentially twice as much as the previous score (Adreno 740 iGPU vs. Adreno 730 iGPU).

Due to the apparent performance boost between the iGPU components of the Xperia 1 IV and Xperia 1 V, this specific benchmark leak appears to be rather shady, however, another rumor from ZACKBUKS comes in a more reliable form.

According to the well-known Xperia leaker, the Sony camera team may use LG Innotek’s “Optical Telephoto Zoom Module,” which has the dual advantages of providing 4x to 9x magnification and being so small as to do away with the need for a camera bump. It would be a shocking step for Sony to move away from its own camera expertise.

The Xperia 1 IV launched in China in June and didn’t get on sale in the US until September, and the Xperia 1 III likewise took its time going from China to the US and UK (over two-and-a-half months). However, according to a different insider, Sony is already two months ahead of schedule in the Xperia 1 V’s testing phase compared to its 2022 predecessor. As a result, the launch might happen as early as April 2023. With a little luck, this might mean that fans of the adored line outside of China could see the arrival of the Sony Xperia 1 V in the US, UK, and other countries by June.
