<p>Smartphone speakers have evolved far beyond tiny afterthoughts. In 2025, they’re loud, spatially aware, and capable of producing impressive bass from impossibly small chambers.</p>

<p>Whether you&#8217;re bingeing Netflix in bed or blasting music on a kitchen counter, these five flagships: Honor Magic 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, iPhone 17 Pro Max, Google Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Sony Xperia 1 VII, represent the best audio experiences you can get on a phone right now. But not all are created equal.</p>

<p></p>

<h3><strong><strong>Honor Magic 7 Pro</strong></strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="726" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot-2024-12-24-075156-1024x726.png?x44794" alt="Honor Magic 7 Pro" class="wp-image-665820" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot-2024-12-24-075156-1024x726.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot-2024-12-24-075156-300x213.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot-2024-12-24-075156-768x545.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot-2024-12-24-075156-696x494.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot-2024-12-24-075156-1068x758.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot-2024-12-24-075156-592x420.png 592w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot-2024-12-24-075156-100x70.png 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot-2024-12-24-075156.png 1084w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/honor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Honor</a> designed the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/honor-magic-7-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Magic 7 Pro</a> with sound in mind. The phone uses its vapor chamber as a waveguide, turning the back panel into a bass amplifier. This setup helps it deliver a fuller low-end response than most other flagships. The stereo speakers mirror each other to create a more spacious effect, and DTS:X Ultra support enhances the sense of directionality in games and movies.</p>

<p>Honor’s tuning emphasizes punch and volume. The sound carries weight, and users can feel vibrations from the bass when holding the phone. Even at max volume, there is no noticeable distortion. Vocals stay clear, and the top and bottom speakers output at balanced levels. This makes the Magic 7 Pro an ideal device for music, action-heavy games, and video playback. The overall speaker experience stands out as the most impactful among current flagships.</p>

<h3><strong>Galaxy S25 Ultra</strong></h3>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a> widened the speaker grille on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s25-ultra/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy S25 Ultra</a> and optimized the internal chambers. These changes help the device deliver higher volume with a fuller sound profile than its predecessor. The S25 Ultra reaches nearly 93 dB in tests, placing it among the loudest phones in 2025.</p>

<p>The stereo setup includes a top earpiece and bottom-firing speaker. Samsung uses Dolby Atmos to improve stereo width and add a virtual surround effect. The speakers produce warm mids and clear highs, while bass response stays tighter than average. Distortion at high volume remains minimal, even during heavy playback.</p>

<p>The S25 Ultra suits a wide range of content. It performs well across music, dialogue, gaming, and movie streaming. Its output stays consistent and reliable across all scenarios, and its tuning prioritizes clarity and power without over-emphasizing any specific frequency range.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> continues to refine its stereo audio with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-17-pro-max/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 17 Pro Max</a>. Both the bottom and top speakers output sound at similar levels, resulting in balanced stereo playback. The phone supports Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, which enhances the soundstage for movies and supported content.</p>

<p>The speaker tuning focuses on clarity and instrument separation. Vocals stay crisp, highs sound clean, and bass has just enough presence to avoid sounding flat. Deep bass is limited, as with most smartphones, but mid-bass cues such as drums and lower vocals sound clear.</p>

<p>At high volume, the iPhone 17 Pro Max maintains audio quality with minimal distortion. It works well for video calls, podcasts, and vocal-heavy content, but also holds up with streaming media. The stereo separation and balance make it a dependable option for users who care about clean, natural sound across different listening environments.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a> improved the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-10-pro-xl/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pixel 10 Pro XL</a>’s speaker performance with stronger output and better balance between top and bottom speakers. The phone now produces a more even stereo image, which helps with spatial awareness in games and movies.</p>

<p>The Pixel reaches high volumes comfortably. It delivers noticeably less distortion than previous generations. Treble-heavy content sounds smoother, and voice playback gains clarity. Bass response remains modest, but the overall tuning feels more rounded and less tinny than on earlier Pixel models.</p>

<p>The soundstage is not as wide as the iPhone or Galaxy, but it is more open than before. The Pixel 10 Pro XL performs well for podcasts, YouTube videos, and spoken word content. Its clean output and minimal harshness make it suitable for extended listening, especially in quieter environments.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sony</a> launched the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-1-vii/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xperia 1 VII</a> in mid-2025 with a focus on premium audio. It features true dual front-facing stereo speakers, a rare design among modern smartphones. Both speakers act as dedicated drivers rather than relying on a hybrid earpiece setup. This results in improved balance, clarity, and stereo separation.</p>

<p>The speakers on the Xperia 1 VII produce strong volume with rich mid-range presence. Vocals and instruments sound full-bodied, and the phone handles high frequencies with control. Sony’s engineering delivers more impactful lows than expected from such a slim device. In real-world tests, the phone fills a room with sound easily and avoids distortion at high volumes.</p>

<p>The phone also supports Dolby Atmos, along with proprietary audio enhancements from Sony’s AV and Walkman teams. The stereo image is wide and immersive, making the Xperia ideal for music, movies, and gaming. Users can clearly perceive directional cues in content, and the overall audio performance stands out as a serious contender among flagship phones. Sony also retains a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired audio enthusiasts.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/">Sony</a> has started rolling out the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/23/android-16-update-complete-list-of-eligible-devices/">Android 16</a> update to its flagship Xperia 1 VII, just as the device <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/08/22/sony-xperia-1-vii-returns-to-europe-after-hardware-fix/">returns</a> to shelves following a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/06/sony-xperia-1-vii-sales-suspended/">short pause over software glitches</a>. <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="869" height="584" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot-2025-09-17-212159.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-707194" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot-2025-09-17-212159.png 869w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot-2025-09-17-212159-300x202.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot-2025-09-17-212159-768x516.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot-2025-09-17-212159-696x468.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot-2025-09-17-212159-625x420.png 625w" sizes="(max-width: 869px) 100vw, 869px" /><figcaption>Sony Xperia 1 VII</figcaption></figure>

<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-1-vii/">Xperia 1 VII</a> originally shipped with Android 15. Now, firmware version 71.1.A.2.68 brings Android 16 to the device in a 1.1GB download. The rollout began in Europe and is available through the usual path: Settings &gt; System &gt; Software update. Sony has promised four major OS upgrades and six years of security support, meaning the phone should be supported up to Android 19.</p>

<p>The update delivers several useful features but avoids a dramatic redesign. Unlike Google’s Pixel phones, Sony has skipped the Material 3 Expressive look, leaving the interface close to what users already had on Android 15. The most noticeable change is a redesigned system settings app, while most other UI elements stay minimal and familiar.</p>

<p>On the feature side, Android 16 adds Google’s Advanced Protection, which users must enable manually. Once active, it blocks unsafe apps, flags scam calls, and warns against risky websites. Notifications are grouped more intelligently, support for hearing aids has improved, and users can now capture and share HDR screenshots.</p>

<p>Still, some features are missing. Live Updates, Google’s real-time push notifications for things like deliveries, aren’t present. The security patch also remains at August 2025, without a September update included yet.</p>

<p>Even without sweeping changes, Sony has beaten rivals like OnePlus to a stable Android 16 release. With the Snapdragon 8 Elite, 12GB RAM, and up to 512GB storage, the Xperia 1 VII remains a powerful option — and Sony’s quicker update cycle may help polish its reputation for software support.</p>

<p>While most brands, including OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, are busy with beta testing, Sony has already begun the stable rollout of Android 16. The update is currently available for the Sony Xperia 1 VII, which was released last year with Android 15.</p>

<p>The Android 16 update for the Sony Xperia 1 VII has the firmware version <strong>71.1.A.2.68</strong>, and it’s about <strong>1.13GB</strong> in size. This is the first of four major updates that Sony promises for the Xperia 1 VII. If you have got this smartphone, you can head over to <em><strong>Settings &gt; System &gt; Advanced</strong></em> and tap on <em><strong>Software update</strong></em> to install the latest update.</p>

<div><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-Android-16-update-473x1024.png?x44794" class="td-modal-image"><div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-Android-16-update-473x1024.png?x44794" alt="Sony Xperia 1 VII Android 16 update" class="wp-image-707149" width="327" height="701" /></figure></div></a></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center"><strong>Also read:</strong> <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/08/19/these-sony-xperia-phones-are-eligible-for-android-16-upgrade/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">These Sony Xperia phones are eligible for Android 16 upgrade</a></p>

<h2>This isn’t as exciting as it sounds</h2>

<p>While it’s surprising to see Sony rolling out stable Android 16 ahead of Xiaomi, OnePlus, Vivo, and many other Android brands, the update mostly feels just like Android 15. Sony has only made marginal changes to the user interface. It skips major changes introduced by Google with Android 16, such as Live Updates and the new &#8220;Material 3 Expressive&#8221; design.</p>

<p>The Android 16 update for the Sony Xperia 1 VII doesn’t have a changelog. According to a <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyXperia/comments/1ni9sqk/1_vii_android_16_is_here/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reddit user</a>, the Android security patch level has not been upgraded, still at August 2025. The smartphone would majorly feel the same even after upgrading to Android 16, except for the revamped Settings app.</p>

<p>This upgrade also brings a number of security improvements to Sony phones to keep them safer and more secure. Google’s new Advanced Protection ensures users remain protected from malware and various threats. This feature also blocks apps and websites that Google doesn’t think are safe. Additionally, Android 16 brings intelligent notifications grouping and improved support for hearing aids.</p>

<p>Sony has only three more smartphones left to upgrade to Android 16, which include the Sony Xperia 10 VII, Xperia 1 VI, and Xperia 10 VI. Hence, I believe it wouldn’t take long to complete the rollout.</p>

<p>Sony&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/13/sony-xperia-1-vii-debuts-with-snapdragon-8-elite-camera-upgrades-and-walkman-audio/">Xperia phones</a> have long been praised for their ability to double as external monitors for Sony Alpha cameras — a niche but powerful feature that made the lineup stand out. But that perk just got harder to access. With the latest update to the Monitor &amp; Control app (v2.4.0), Sony has locked the wired external monitor option behind a subscription.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="682" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AlphaUniverse-MonitorandControl_ILME-FX3_Xperia_2-1024x682.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-704997" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AlphaUniverse-MonitorandControl_ILME-FX3_Xperia_2-1024x682.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AlphaUniverse-MonitorandControl_ILME-FX3_Xperia_2-300x200.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AlphaUniverse-MonitorandControl_ILME-FX3_Xperia_2-768x512.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AlphaUniverse-MonitorandControl_ILME-FX3_Xperia_2-1536x1024.webp 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AlphaUniverse-MonitorandControl_ILME-FX3_Xperia_2-696x464.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AlphaUniverse-MonitorandControl_ILME-FX3_Xperia_2-1068x712.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AlphaUniverse-MonitorandControl_ILME-FX3_Xperia_2-1920x1280.webp 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AlphaUniverse-MonitorandControl_ILME-FX3_Xperia_2-630x420.webp 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AlphaUniverse-MonitorandControl_ILME-FX3_Xperia_2.webp 2000w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Image: Sony</figcaption></figure>

<p>Until now, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/24/sony-alpha-1-ii-camera-launched-in-india/">Sony Alpha</a> users could connect an Xperia phone with their camera and get a sharp, lag-free monitoring experience for free. Going forward, that same feature will cost $5 a month or $50 a year. The wireless version of the tool is still available at no charge, but it comes with latency that makes it impractical for professional shoots.</p>

<p>The app also works on Galaxy, Pixel, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and even iPhones, but the premium monitor function is Xperia-only. Other tools in the app still work without payment, and Sony now offers Free, Basic, and Premium tiers to spell out what’s included.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="660" height="532" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Monitor-Control-app-subscription-tiers.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-704998" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Monitor-Control-app-subscription-tiers.jpg 660w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Monitor-Control-app-subscription-tiers-300x242.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Monitor-Control-app-subscription-tiers-521x420.jpg 521w" sizes="(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px" /></figure></div>

<p>For anyone who hasn’t updated yet, the workaround is simple: stick with version 2.3.1 or earlier, which still allows free wired use. Those who already updated can also roll back — older builds are still floating around online, but it’s best to grab them from a trusted source.</p>

<p>Sony’s decision hasn’t gone over well with photographers and videographers who bought into Xperia specifically for this feature. Whether the company rethinks the move remains to be seen, but for now, one of Xperia’s biggest selling points is no longer free.</p>

<p>Sony confirmed that a manufacturing defect in the circuit board was causing random shutdowns, reboots, and failure to power on, particularly impacting devices sold through its official channels.</p>

<p>In response, Sony launched a free replacement program and deployed an IMEI checker for affected users. The company has also corrected its production process to prevent future failures In a move that demonstrates transparency, Sony reached out proactively to purchasers, ship replacements, and affirmed that new stock will be free from the defect.</p>

<p>Priced at €1,399 (~$1,550), the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-1-vii/">Xperia 1 VII</a> is a high-end phone featuring a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display with 120 Hz refresh, Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, 12 GB RAM, up to 512 GB storage, and a 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W charging.</p>

<p>It also packs a triple 48 MP camera setup, expandable storage, and premium audio features including a 3.5 mm jack and Walkman tech in the circuitry—elements that set it apart for enthusiasts.</p>

<p>Sony estimates that inventory levels in key markets like the UK, Germany, and France should normalize by early September. This comeback shows the company’s ability to respond quickly and reinforce its commitment to the Xperia series.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/">Sony</a> is hitting pause on global sales of its flagship Xperia 1 VII smartphone following widespread complaints of unexpected shutdowns and boot failures. After <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/06/sony-xperia-1-vii-sales-suspended/">initially suspending sales in Japan</a>, the company is now extending the halt worldwide while it investigates what appears to be a hardware-related issue.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII.jpg?x44794" alt="Sony Xperia 1 VII" class="wp-image-687021" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure>

<p>In an updated support notice published on July 8, Sony <a href="https://www.sony.de/electronics/support/mobile-phones-tablets-mobile-phones/xperia-1-vii-256gb/articles/00357194">acknowledged</a> the growing number of reports involving sudden reboots, freezing, and devices failing to power on entirely. While the issue first surfaced in Japan, affecting four models—SO-51F, SOG15, A501SO, and XQ-FS44—similar problems have now been reported by users in Europe, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. In response, listings for the phone have quietly disappeared from Sony’s online stores in several markets, including the UK, Germany, and Spain.</p>

<h2>The exact cause remains unclear</h2>

<p>Sony believes the glitch may be limited to specific production batches, possibly tied to a hardware fault, although the exact cause remains unclear. As of now, there’s no word on how many units are affected or when sales might resume.</p>

<p>For those already experiencing issues, Sony is offering <strong>a temporary workaround</strong>: press and hold the power and volume up buttons simultaneously for about 20 seconds to force a restart. The company also recommends updating to the latest software version and, most importantly, backing up important data right away.</p>

<p>Sony is urging customers to contact support if their phone is acting up. While some devices may recover with software updates, others might need to be sent in for repair.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-1-vii/">Xperia 1 VII</a>, released earlier last month, features a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and a triple camera system. But with these reliability concerns now surfacing, the phone’s momentum in the premium market could take a hit unless Sony addresses the problem quickly and clearly.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony">Sony’s</a> latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VII, may have had a promising debut in Japan, but its rollout has hit an unexpected roadblock. The company has now officially paused sales and shipments of the device in its home country, following multiple reports of serious operational issues. While the global versions seem unaffected for now, the Japanese models are facing troubling problems that have prompted Sony to take action.</p>

<h3><strong>Random shutdowns and reboots prompt temporary halt</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-1024x576.png?x44794" alt="Sony Xperia 1 VII" class="wp-image-695670" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-2048x1152.png 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-1920x1080.png 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-746x420.png 746w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Sony Xperia 1 VII</figcaption></figure>

<p>The affected <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-1-vii/">Sony Xperia 1 VII</a> units are said to suffer from random shutdowns, reboots, or in some cases, not powering on at all. Sony’s Japanese support page has listed four specific models impacted — SO-51F, SOG15, A501SO, and XQ-FS44. These issues appear serious enough to warrant a temporary suspension of availability, although the brand is still investigating the root cause.</p>

<p>Some early speculation points to compatibility issues with Japan-exclusive services like Osaifu-Keitai, though this remains unconfirmed. Sony has advised users experiencing such issues to press and hold the power and volume up buttons for 20 seconds to try recovering the device. A new software update with build number “71.0.A.2.43” is also available, which may help mitigate the problem — though it&#8217;s unclear if this update actually fixes the core issue.</p>

<h3><strong>Global models remain unaffected for now</strong></h3>

<p>So far, these shutdown-related issues appear to be limited to Japanese variants, with no reports of similar problems emerging from global markets. The Xperia 1 VII is currently not available in the US, and given the brand’s limited presence there, a stateside release remains unlikely. Still, this situation raises concerns about whether the issue is software-based or indicative of deeper hardware flaws — something only time will tell.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sony </a>just took the wraps off <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/13/sony-xperia-1-vii-debuts-with-snapdragon-8-elite-camera-upgrades-and-walkman-audio/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xperia 1 VII</a>, its latest flagship phone that isn’t trying to be mainstream. In fact, none of the Xperias are built around that idea. </p>

<p>These are devices built less like a general-purpose smartphone and more like a carefully-stitched portfolio of Sony’s hardware divisions: Alpha cameras, Bravia displays, Walkman audio, and just enough Android polish to call it a phone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But with a price hovering around $1,700, the real question isn’t what it can do, it’s who exactly it’s for.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII.jpg?x44794" alt="Sony Xperia 1 VII" class="wp-image-687021" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure></div>

<h3><strong>A phone that serves a niche</strong></h3>

<p>Sony’s recent track record in phones has followed a predictable but deliberate pattern. It ignores market trends, skip the gimmicks, and stick with the features that tech enthusiasts swear the rest of the industry has forgotten. Like headphone jack or microSD card slot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>That formula hasn’t made Xperia devices bestsellers, and the Xperia 1 VII isn’t likely to change that. With every generation of Xperia, it feels like Sony takes a hard look at what a small but vocal group of users really wants, then builds it without asking anyone else for their opinion. And this year’s Xperia 1 VII is no different.</p>

<h3><strong>For the Camera Nerd, Not the Casual Snapper</strong></h3>

<p>Sony is still playing to its strengths in imaging. The Xperia 1 VII borrows heavily from the Alpha camera team, and it shows. Not in the way we are used to seeing, like megapixel count. Instead, Sony is borrowing elements like control, precision, and features that appeal to people who already own a Sony camera and want a phone that works the same way.</p>

<p>The new ultrawide sensor is the biggest change this year, finally addressing what was arguably the weakest link in the previous model’s camera setup. It’s now larger and faster, with a brighter f/2.0 aperture. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="738" height="416" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-launch-new-camera-hardware.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-686255" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-launch-new-camera-hardware.jpg 738w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-launch-new-camera-hardware-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-launch-new-camera-hardware-696x392.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px" /></figure></div>

<p>You also get real-time Eye AF for humans and animals, AI-based exposure tuning, and a two-stage physical shutter button. These are all features that make it feel like home to photographers who already know their way around depth of field and focal lengths.</p>

<p>Sony even threw in an AI-based auto-framing mode for video, cropping footage in real-time to keep subjects centered. Though it maxes out at 1080p.</p>

<p>That said, if you just want to open the camera app, tap once, and get a social-media-ready shot, this isn’t really the phone for you. Sony’s pro-focused camera software expects the user to know what they’re doing, or at least be willing to learn.&nbsp;</p>

<h3><strong>For Audiophiles</strong></h3>

<p>Then there’s the audio side of the Xperia 1 VII. After the camera, it’s arguably the most niche aspect of an already niche device.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The phone borrows high-end circuitry from Sony’s Walkman lineup, upgraded soldering in the headphone jack, and support for just about every premium format out there: Hi-Res Audio, LDAC, DSEE Ultimate, and Dolby Atmos.</p>

<p>None of this is going to matter if you’re streaming compressed Spotify tracks over average earbuds. But if you’re the type of person who is an audiophile and can actually tell the difference between FLAC and AAC with your wired headphones, the Xperia 1 VII could be a device for you.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The stereo speakers have also been given a bass and mid-bass boost (10%), and the tuning is done in collaboration with Sony Music Entertainment.&nbsp;</p>

<h3><strong>The Display Is Smart, But Familiar</strong></h3>

<p>The 6.5-inch OLED display might be one of the most understated parts of the Xperia 1 VII. On paper, it’s largely unchanged from the previous model. It has the same size, resolution, and 120Hz refresh rate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>What’s new is a smarter adaptive brightness system, which uses two sensors to better gauge ambient lighting and tweak brightness and color accordingly.</p>

<h3><strong>Performance That Doesn’t Show Off</strong></h3>

<p>Under the hood, the Xperia 1 VII is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chip with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. That’s very much in line with other 2025 flagships, though the inclusion of a microSD slot for up to 2TB of extra storage sets this phone apart — again, only if you care about that kind of thing.</p>

<p>There’s a vapor chamber for thermal control and while Sony hasn’t talked about gaming and benchmark scores, you can expect a flagship performance. There’s also Wi-Fi 7 and upgraded Bluetooth, which are great to have but won’t be noticed by anyone who isn’t already reading spec sheets.</p>

<h3><strong>Software and Support</strong></h3>

<p>The Xperia 1 VII launches with Android 15 and promises four major OS updates and six years of security patches. That’s decent, but still short of what Google and Samsung offer, especially considering the price.&nbsp;</p>

<p>You’re getting a clean Android build without bloat, but there’s also no exclusive AI software experience or Pixel-like integration. It’s Android, largely untouched, which might appeal to some and underwhelm others.</p>

<h3><strong>So, Who’s This Actually For?</strong></h3>

<p>If you need to ask whether the Xperia 1 VII is for you, it probably isn’t.</p>

<p>This is a phone for people who want what Sony is offering <em>specifically</em>: a pro-tier camera setup that mirrors Alpha controls, uncompromised audio hardware with real headphone support, expandable storage, and a display that doesn’t scream for attention but performs well in any condition. It’s not designed to appeal to the masses. And it doesn’t try to.</p>

<p>You either want this phone for exactly what it is, or you’ll find its price hard to justify. </p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/">Sony</a> is back in the smartphone game with the Xperia 1 VII, launched today (May 13), just before the WH-1000XM6 headphones drop. Priced at €1,499 in the Eurozone, it boasts a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, a brighter display, upgraded cameras, and Walkman-series audio components, aiming to top the Xperia 1 VI.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="644" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Xperia-1-VII-in-all-color-options-1024x644.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-686257" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Xperia-1-VII-in-all-color-options-1024x644.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Xperia-1-VII-in-all-color-options-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Xperia-1-VII-in-all-color-options-768x483.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Xperia-1-VII-in-all-color-options-696x438.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Xperia-1-VII-in-all-color-options-1068x672.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Xperia-1-VII-in-all-color-options-668x420.jpg 668w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Xperia-1-VII-in-all-color-options.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The phone is available in Black, Green, and Purple, replacing the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-1-vi/">Xperia 1 VI</a> with several upgrades. It swaps the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/12/02/list-of-snapdragon-8-elite-smartphones/">Snapdragon 8 Elite</a>, delivering 40% boosts in CPU, GPU, and NPU performance. The 5,000mAh battery returns, but efficiency gains promise up to two days of use, a claim bolstered by the chip’s 3nm process.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="848" height="510" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-13-101232.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-686254" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-13-101232.png 848w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-13-101232-300x180.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-13-101232-768x462.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-13-101232-696x419.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-13-101232-698x420.png 698w" sizes="(max-width: 848px) 100vw, 848px" /></figure>

<p>The 6.5-inch FHD+ LTPO OLED display, still 19.5:9 with a 120Hz refresh rate, gets 20% brighter and smarter with a rear light sensor adjusting color temperature. It&#8217;s a Bravia OLED panel, nearly identical to the one on the predecessor.</p>

<h2>Camera and audio upgrades:</h2>

<p>Camera upgrades are a highlight of this phone. The 48MP ultra-wide (1/1.56-inch, 2.1x larger than the VI’s 1/2.5-inch) doubles as a macro lens, offering sharper 16mm shots. The 48MP Exmor T main sensor supports native 24mm or 48mm focal lengths for versatile photography. The 85-170mm telephoto, unchanged from the VI, keeps its 3.5-7.1x zoom.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="738" height="416" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-launch-new-camera-hardware.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-686255" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-launch-new-camera-hardware.jpg 738w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-launch-new-camera-hardware-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-launch-new-camera-hardware-696x392.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px" /></figure></div>

<p>Audio shines with Walkman-series components, enhancing wired headphone sound via the 3.5mm jack, though Sony is light on details.</p>

<p>Running Android 15 with 12GB RAM and 256/512GB storage, it will offer 4 OS updates and 6 years of security updates. It&#8217;s priced at €1,499 in the Eurozone. Against rivals like the Galaxy S25 Ultra, its Alpha-powered cameras and audiophile cred stand out. Will the Xperia 1 VII’s niche appeal justify its price, or is Sony banking too hard on loyalists? Only time will tell.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sony</a> will launch the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/07/sony-xperia-1-vii-launch-date-confirmed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xperia 1 VII on May 13</a>. A new leak from Hong Kong reveals the 512GB model will cost HK$10,899 (USD$1401/€1245). That’s HK$400 (US$51) more than last year’s Xperia 1 VI, which was priced at HK$10,499 (US$1347) for the same storage. This increase, about €45, could also apply to the European market. Rising hardware costs, including the use of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, are likely behind the higher price.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-AH-exclusive-featured-1154x649-1-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-685877" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-AH-exclusive-featured-1154x649-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-AH-exclusive-featured-1154x649-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-AH-exclusive-featured-1154x649-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-AH-exclusive-featured-1154x649-1-696x391.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-AH-exclusive-featured-1154x649-1-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-AH-exclusive-featured-1154x649-1-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-AH-exclusive-featured-1154x649-1.jpg 1154w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The Xperia 1 VII will be <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/04/24/sony-xperia-1-vii-real-life-images-revealed-evolutionary-rather-than-revolutionary/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">available</a> in black, green, and purple. Audio is a major focus. A <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/10/sony-xperia-1-vii-marketing-material-leak/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent report</a> revealed that the phone supports high-resolution sound for both wired and wireless headphones. It uses Sony’s DSEE Ultimate AI to improve compressed audio and includes LDAC support for better wireless streaming. The front-facing stereo speakers now deliver 10% more sound pressure in the low-to-mid range, and the audio system uses parts from Sony’s Walkman lineup.</p>

<p>The camera setup adds a new 120mm macro mode with manual focus. It also uses full-size sensors for better low-light photos and has a 2.1x larger ultra-wide sensor. Video features include Auto Framing and AI Camera Work, which track and center the subject while reducing shake. These work together in Dual Video Mode for more stable footage.</p>

<p>The phone has a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display. Sunlight Vision adjusts screen contrast for better outdoor visibility, and BRAVIA tech boosts brightness and color. The rear camera setup includes a 48MP main sensor with OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide, and a 12MP periscope telephoto lens with 70–200mm zoom. The front camera is 12MP.</p>

<p>Other specs include a 5000mAh battery, 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD slot, USB-C port, and dual front speakers. The design features a flat frame, glass back, and textured grip. Sony promises four Android version updates and six years of security patches. The launch livestream starts at 11 AM JST (7:30 AM IST) on May 13.</p>

<p>The Xperia 1 VII puts a strong focus on audio. It supports high-resolution sound on both wired and wireless headphones. Sony’s DSEE Ultimate AI tech enhances audio quality, especially from compressed files. It also supports the LDAC codec for better wireless streaming. The front-facing stereo speakers have been improved and now deliver 10% more sound pressure in the low-to-mid frequency range. The audio system is powered by components from Sony’s Walkman line.</p>

<p>On the camera side, there’s a new macro mode at 120mm (manual focus only) for close-up shots. Sony says the phone uses full-size sensors to improve low-light shots. The ultra-wide sensor is now 2.1 times larger than before. The phone also adds features like Auto Framing, which follows the subject and captures wide and close-up shots at the same time. AI Camera Work keeps the subject centered while stabilizing the video. Both work together in Dual Video Mode for smoother footage.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sony</a> has confirmed its next Xperia product launch will take place on May 13, 2025, where it is expected to unveil the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/sony-xperia-1-vii/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xperia 1 VII</a>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="602" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-07-222422-1024x602.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-685528" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-07-222422-1024x602.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-07-222422-300x176.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-07-222422-768x451.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-07-222422-696x409.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-07-222422-1068x628.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-07-222422-715x420.png 715w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot-2025-05-07-222422.png 1162w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The phone will run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen Elite Mobile Platform, as confirmed by Sony earlier this year. A Geekbench listing (model number XQ-FS54) shows the device will come with 12GB of RAM and Android 15. The same model was recently certified by the US FCC, which listed its dimensions as 162 x 74.5 x 8.5mm. It will retain a 5000mAh battery (4850mAh minimum), matching its predecessor.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="Sony Xperia 1 VII" class="wp-image-680260" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-1920x1080.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The display is expected to be a 6.5-inch 4K OLED, similar to past Xperia 1 models. Camera specs include a 48MP main sensor with OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, a 12MP periscope telephoto (70–200mm variable zoom), and a 12MP front camera. The Xperia launch event will start at 11 AM JST (7:30 AM IST) and will be streamed live.</p>

<p>From <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/04/24/sony-xperia-1-vii-real-life-images-revealed-evolutionary-rather-than-revolutionary/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">previous leaks</a>, the Xperia 1 VII keeps Sony’s signature tall design with a flat frame. The right side houses the power, volume, and shutter buttons, while the left side is clean. The phone retains features most flagships have dropped, including a 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD card slot, and dual front-facing speakers. It also has a USB-C port and a triple-camera array vertically stacked on the back.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/01/sony-xperia-1-vii-runs-geekbench-with-snapdragon-8-elite-12gb-of-ram/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benchmark results</a> for the Xperia 1 VII include a 2,967 single-core and 9,017 multi-core score, consistent with Snapdragon 8 Gen Elite performance. Reports suggest that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/06/sony-xperia-1-vii-global-release-late/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global launch</a> may take place a few months after the initial release.</p>

<p>There might be some delays to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sony</a>&#8216;s plans for the Xperia 1 VII&#8217;s global launch. The model is the brand&#8217;s next gen flagship that packs cutting edge technology like the latest Qualcomm chipset and powerful camera hardware. But there&#8217;s some bad news for Sony fans.</p>

<h2>Sony Xperia 1 VII global launch comes after the Japan release</h2>

<p>The Japanese tech giant is set to unveil the Xperia 1 VII premium phone soon. Rumors have hinted that the device could be launching sometime later this month in select regions. However, the availability in the global markets might not arrive till a couple of months later. In a report from Sumaho Digest, Sony is expected to unveil Xperia 1 VII in Japan on 15th May 2025. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K1-scaled-1-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="Sony Xperia 1 VII" class="wp-image-680261" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K1-scaled-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K1-scaled-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K1-scaled-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K1-scaled-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K1-scaled-1-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K1-scaled-1-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K1-scaled-1-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K1-scaled-1-1920x1080.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K1-scaled-1-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Sony Xperia 1 VII renders</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>However, Sony&#8217;s flagship won&#8217;t be released globally till July, which includes regions like Europe. At the moment, there is no word from the US. If the Xperia 1 VII is actually launching on May 15, then its release date matches its predecessor (Sony Xperia 1 VI), which debuted on 15th May 2024. Keep in mind that this is still just speculation at the moment, but we can expect more details to surface in the coming days.</p>

<p>Sony is also working on its next gen headphones, which is the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-wh-1000xm6/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WH-1000XM6</a>. This model first surfaced on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/01/29/sony-wh-1000xm6-headphones-spotted-fcc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FCC </a>database earlier this year, followed by an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/02/11/sony-wh-1000xm6-global-launch-near/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IMDA </a>listing a while later. So the company could be planning to launch this alongside the Sony Xperia 1 VII. Unfortunately, that is all the information we have at the moment, so stick around for more. In related news, the Xperia 1 VII recently made an appearance on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/01/sony-xperia-1-vii-runs-geekbench-with-snapdragon-8-elite-12gb-of-ram/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GeekBench </a>with Snapdragon 8 Elite and 12GB of RAM.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sony</a>’s next flagship phone, the Xperia 1 VII, has quietly appeared on Geekbench just weeks after its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/04/24/sony-xperia-1-vii-real-life-images-revealed-evolutionary-rather-than-revolutionary/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">real-life images leaked online</a>. The Geekbench entry is for a device with the model number XQ-FS54.  </p>

<p>Although the listing doesn’t specify the device name, the model code aligns with Sony’s naming format for European units. So this likely is a European variant of the Xperia 1 VII. </p>

<h2><strong>Sony Xperia 1 VII Benchmark&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>It shows the device is running on a new Qualcomm chipset, which isn’t named outright but is paired with an Adreno 830 GPU and a CPU clocked at up to 4.32GHz. The combination makes it fairly easy to guess. It’s Qualcomm’s top-tier<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/03/05/snapdragon-8-elite-regains-lead-in-latest-antutu-performance-chart/"> </a><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/03/05/snapdragon-8-elite-regains-lead-in-latest-antutu-performance-chart/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Snapdragon 8 Elite</a>, as previously rumored for the Xperia 1 VII. </p>

</figure>

<p>The listing also shows the phone has 12GB of RAM and is running Android 15. In benchmark scores, it managed 2,967 points in the single-core test and 9,017 in the multi-core run. Those are in line with what you’d expect from the latest Snapdragon platform, but the scores themselves don’t say much beyond confirming the hardware is being actively tested.</p>

<p>The leaked renders and hands-on images of the handheld show that Sony isn’t straying far from its established design language. The phone keeps its signature tall form factor, reportedly measuring 161.9 x 74.5 x 8.5mm, or 11mm at the thickest point, due to the camera bump.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It features a flat frame with all buttons—power, volume, and a dedicated shutter—on the right side, while the left remains bare.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Xperia-1-VII-5K2-scaled-1-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" /><figcaption>Sony Xperia 1 VII Render</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The Xperia 1 VII retains some hardware features most flagship phones have ditched, like a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD/SIM slot at the bottom. It also features dual front-facing speakers, a USB-C port, and a vertical rear camera layout with three sensors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The main is said to be a 48MP camera with OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide, and a 12MP periscope telephoto lens offering variable zoom between 70mm and 200mm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sony hasn’t confirmed a launch date for its next flagship just yet. But as the real-world images and benchmark results are now out in the wild, an official announcement probably isn’t far off.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/">Sony</a>’s next flagship, the Xperia 1 VII, has been surfaced in real-life images, courtesy of a certification listing. These live photos confirm the phone’s design, echoing earlier renders, and reveal three color options: black, navy green, and a purple hue not seen since the Xperia 1 IV. With a slightly tweaked look and the model number XQ-FSxx, here’s what we know so far.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="831" height="706" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-68-3-1.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-683472" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-68-3-1.webp 831w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-68-3-1-300x255.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-68-3-1-768x652.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-68-3-1-696x591.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-68-3-1-494x420.webp 494w" sizes="(max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px" /></figure>

<p>The Xperia 1 VII, likely launching soon given the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-1-vi/">Xperia 1 VI</a>’s May 2024 debut, sticks close to its predecessor’s aesthetic, as shown in certification images. The side and back finishes mirror the 1 VI, but the camera bump is chunkier, housing a triple-lens setup. Rumors of all three cameras using Exmor-T sensors didn’t pan out—only the main 52MP (48MP effective) camera appears to sport one, matching the 1 VI’s 12MP ultrawide and telephoto. The microphone has shifted closer to the 3.5mm headphone jack, a Sony staple.</p>

</figure>

<h2>Here are the dimensions:</h2>

<p>The phone’s dimensions are roughly 165mm tall and 74mm wide, a tad longer than the 1 VI’s 162 x 74mm, per the measurements. Fitting a 21:9 display in this frame would require slimmer bezels, leaving some speculation about the screen’s aspect ratio. The model number XQ-FSxx, with the SIM-free version likely XQ-FS44, and OEM ID PM-150x-BV suggest fewer regional variants than past models, hinting at a more limited rollout.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="481" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot-2025-04-23-093331-1200x564-1-1024x481.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-683476" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot-2025-04-23-093331-1200x564-1-1024x481.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot-2025-04-23-093331-1200x564-1-300x141.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot-2025-04-23-093331-1200x564-1-768x361.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot-2025-04-23-093331-1200x564-1-696x327.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot-2025-04-23-093331-1200x564-1-1068x502.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot-2025-04-23-093331-1200x564-1-894x420.webp 894w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot-2025-04-23-093331-1200x564-1.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The Xperia 1 VII could pack a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/12/02/list-of-snapdragon-8-elite-smartphones/">Snapdragon 8 Elite</a> chip, though specs remain unconfirmed. With a design that’s evolutionary rather than revolutionary, Sony is banking on its signature style. Expect more details as the rumored May 15 launch nears.</p>

<p>The design isn&#8217;t a huge change. It still has a 6.5-inch screen with thicker bezels on the top and bottom. The top bezel has a 12MP selfie camera. It&#8217;s a bit wider and thicker than the last model, measuring 161.9 x 74.5 x 8.5mm, or 11mm at the camera bump. The power button with a fingerprint sensor, volume buttons, and a camera shutter button are all on the right side. The left side is plain. It keeps the 3.5mm headphone jack, which is rare these days, and a microphone on the top.</p>

<p>It has dual front speakers for good sound. The bottom has a SIM/microSD slot, a USB-C port, and another microphone. The back has a vertical camera setup: a 48MP main camera with image stabilization, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP periscope telephoto lens that can zoom from 70 to 200mm. It was previously rumored that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/02/26/sony-xperia-1-vii-to-feature-exmor-t-sensors-for-all-cameras-heres-why-it-matters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">all three cameras could feature Sony&#8217;s flagship Exmor T sensors</a>, however, that does not appear to be the case as per this report. There are also some extra cutouts, which could be for laser autofocus or more microphones.</p>

<p>As for specifications, the phone is rumored to have the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, 12GB or 16GB of RAM, 256GB or 512GB of storage, and a 5,000mAh or bigger battery with 30W charging. The display is said to return to a 4K resolution OLED after the brand opted for a 1080 x 2340 pixel OLED in the Xperia 1 VI as a cost-cutting measure. The aspect ratio will remain 19.5:9, and the screen will offer a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. It will run on Android 15. The phone is said to start at $1,399, which is pretty pricey. However, these details are based on early speculation, so it&#8217;s best to take them with a grain of salt until more concrete leaks emerge closer to the official release.</p>

<p>Recent leaks suggest a major camera upgrade for the Sony Xperia 1 VII, along with an unexpected nod to the Walkman brand. A trusted insider from the Xperia community has now dropped some interesting information, suggesting <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/">Sony</a>’s 2025 flagship—possibly launching in May or June—could pack a much-improved telephoto. Unfortunately, the US availability remains uncertain.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="662" height="497" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/ad27d281-dc76-4599-a827-aec618eb9787.webp?x44794" alt="Sony Xperia 1 VI" class="wp-image-623428" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/ad27d281-dc76-4599-a827-aec618eb9787.webp 662w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/ad27d281-dc76-4599-a827-aec618eb9787-300x225.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/ad27d281-dc76-4599-a827-aec618eb9787-559x420.webp 559w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/ad27d281-dc76-4599-a827-aec618eb9787-80x60.webp 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/ad27d281-dc76-4599-a827-aec618eb9787-265x198.webp 265w" sizes="(max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px" /><figcaption>Sony Xperia 1 VI</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2>Xperia 1 VII to use a ~1/2&#8243; telephoto sensor</h2>

<p>The leaks come from Esato forum user spektykles, a respected source among Xperia fans. In a recent post, spektykles hinted that the Xperia 1 VII’s telephoto sensor will jump to “~1/2” in size—a notable leap from the 1/3.5” Exmor RS sensor in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-1-vi/">Xperia 1 VI</a>. Notably, that tilde means it’s an estimate.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="881" height="368" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-new-telephoto-spektykles.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-679590" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-new-telephoto-spektykles.png 881w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-new-telephoto-spektykles-300x125.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-new-telephoto-spektykles-768x321.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Sony-Xperia-1-VII-new-telephoto-spektykles-696x291.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 881px) 100vw, 881px" /></figure></div>

<p>But even so, it&#8217;s likely to be larger, and a larger sensor promises sharper images and better low-light performance. While chatter about all three rear cameras getting Exmor T sensors swirls, this telephoto tidbit feels like a solid step up. It also aligns with Sony’s imaging legacy. Whether it’ll outshine <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/10/14/hands-on-vivo-x200-pro-photography-powerhouse-ai-smarts/">rivals mastering computational photography</a> remains the big question. The brand is also <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/03/20/sony-is-working-on-200mp-and-100mp-sensors-for-smartphones/">rumored</a> to be working on a number of 200MP and 100MP sensors, and according to a previous report, one of them will be used inside a future Xperia flagship.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="877" height="111" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Welcome-back-Walkman.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-679597" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Welcome-back-Walkman.png 877w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Welcome-back-Walkman-300x38.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Welcome-back-Walkman-768x97.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Welcome-back-Walkman-696x88.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 877px) 100vw, 877px" /></figure></div>

<p>In a separate post, spektykles wrote, “welcome back, Walkman,” alongside the old Sony Ericsson “liquid energy” logo. Is this a hint at a full-fledged Xperia Walkman phone revival—echoing the W-Series from yesteryear—or just a spruced-up Sony Music Center app? </p>

<p>The logo could be a nostalgic wink or a deliberate misdirect. Given the context of Xperia 2025 rumors, it’s tempting to dream of a music-centric flagship, but details are vague. For now, we are left piecing together whether Sony is blending cutting-edge cameras with a retro audio comeback.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/sony/">Sony</a> is set to significantly upgrade the camera capabilities of its upcoming flagship, the Xperia 1 VII. According to a report from Japanese publication Sumahodigest, Sony is incorporating its latest Exmor T sensor across all three rear cameras. This marks a notable improvement over last year’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-1-vi/">Xperia 1 VI</a>, which featured the Exmor T sensor only on the primary camera.</p>

<h2>What&#8217;s special about Exmor T sensors?</h2>

<p>The Exmor T sensor, Sony’s newest stacked CMOS sensor, utilizes a 2-layer transistor pixel technology. It significantly reduces noise, enhances low-light performance, and improves dynamic range compared to the older Exmor RS sensor.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Sony-Xperia-1-VI-camera-island-1024x615.webp?x44794" alt="Sony Xperia 1 VI camera island" class="wp-image-674799" width="633" height="380" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Sony-Xperia-1-VI-camera-island-1024x615.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Sony-Xperia-1-VI-camera-island-300x180.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Sony-Xperia-1-VI-camera-island-768x461.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Sony-Xperia-1-VI-camera-island-696x418.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Sony-Xperia-1-VI-camera-island-1068x642.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Sony-Xperia-1-VI-camera-island-699x420.webp 699w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Sony-Xperia-1-VI-camera-island.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px" /><figcaption>Sony Xperia 1 VI camera island</figcaption></figure>

<p>While the <strong>sensor sizes and megapixel counts are expected to remain unchanged</strong>—52 MP (48 MP effective) for the main camera, and 12 MP each for the ultrawide and telephoto cameras—the integration of Exmor T across all lenses could result in a smoother transition and more consistent colors between lenses. Not to mention this development is expected to uplift the overall photography experience.</p>

<p>Sony has a consistent track record of launching its Xperia 1 series phones in the second quarter. The Xperia 1 VII is expected to follow suit, with a likely launch in May 2024. Hopefully, more information will be revealed as we inch closer to the launch.</p>

<p>To recall, the Xperia 1 VI packs a 6.5&#8243; 19.5:9 display with 1080 x 2340 resolution. It came with Android 14 and support for 3 major Android updates. On the inside, it packs the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, which is paired with UFS 4.0 storage for faster app loading and file transfer. There is a 5000mAh battery that supports 30W wired and 15W wireless charging.</p>

<p>By equipping all rear cameras with the Exmor T sensor, the Xperia 1 VII is poised to deliver a significant improvement in image quality. Nonetheless, the image processing also plays a crucial role here. So we will wait till the launch to test the phone ourselves and see how Sony takes advantage of the new technology. It will also be interesting to see how the 1 VII competes with the mainstream flagships such as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s25-ultra/">Galaxy S25 Ultra</a> or the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/vivo-x200-pro/">vivo X200 Pro</a> that primarily focuses on computational photography.</p>

<p>Only last month <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/Sony" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sony</a> debuted its flagship <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/05/15/sony-xperia-1-vi-launched/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xperia 1 VI</a> smartphone featuring a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and the cutting-edge Exymor T primary camera sensor. Now, just over a month after its launch, we have the first rumors of its successor, called the Xperia 1 VII.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="660" height="353" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/gsmarena_000-1.jpg?x44794" alt="Sony Xperia 1 VII concept render" class="wp-image-632574" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/gsmarena_000-1.jpg 660w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/gsmarena_000-1-300x160.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px" /><figcaption>Sony Xperia 1 VII concept render</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>As per a Weibo post made by user 我打败大魔王 claims that the traditional vertical camera layout may be replaced, potentially allowing for a larger 1/2.3-inch telephoto sensor with a 70-200mm focal range, compared to the Xperia 1 VI&#8217;s smaller sensor. The ultrawide cameras could also see upgrades to 1/2.3-inch sensors while retaining the two-layer transistor pixel technology. However, the primary camera will retain its 1/1.3” sensor size.</p>

<p>Intriguingly, the leak also hints at the possible discontinuation of the Xperia 5 series, leaving the Xperia 1 as Sony&#8217;s sole high-end smartphone line. It is worth pointing out that the tipster lacks a proven track record, so we suggest readers this report with a grain of salt and stay tuned for further confirmation.</p>

<p>In related news, reports of Sony working on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/05/21/sony-xperia-pro-c-compact-flagship-6-inch-display-new-sensor-leak/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">successor of the Xperia Pro-I</a> have also emerged. The device is said to feature a compact 6&#8243; display with a 2K OLED panel and a 1&#8243; primary camera sensor. The device is rumored to be called the Xperia Pro C and is said to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, with 12GB RAM 256GB storage, and a 5,000mAh battery supported with 45W PD fast charging.</p>
