The timing of the report only amplified concerns, arriving shortly after Micron confirmed it was exiting the consumer SSD space altogether. With SATA drives still playing a key role in PC upgrades and budget systems, fears of shortages and price spikes quickly followed.

For those less familiar with the topic, SATA SSDs use the same interface as older hard drives and are typically limited to speeds of around 500–550 MB/s. They remain widely compatible with older desktops and laptops, making them one of the most affordable and popular upgrade options. NVMe SSDs, by comparison, are significantly faster but usually come at a higher cost and require newer hardware support. If Samsung were to discontinue SATA SSDs, the impact would be felt most by people upgrading or building a budget PC. SATA SSDs are also a very good option for use cases that require bulk storage rather than speed.

Fortunately, Samsung has made its position clear. Responding directly to the circulating reports, a company spokesperson stated that “the rumor regarding the phasing out of Samsung SATA or other SSDs is false.” In other words, Samsung has no plans to pull the plug on its SATA SSD business at this moment.

That said, broader pressures in the memory and storage market haven’t disappeared. Ongoing supply constraints, largely driven by surging demand for AI-focused hardware, are expected to push prices higher across various memory products, including SSDs, over the coming months.

For now, though, Samsung’s statement removes one major uncertainty. While the storage market may still be heading into a turbulent period, SATA SSD users can at least be confident that Samsung isn’t abandoning the segment just yet.

The TouchLock SSD features a dual-encryption system that includes an integrated NFC chip and AES hardware encryption. Each unit is tied to a unique ID, allowing secure access only through a registered smartphone. The drive unlocks when users tap a supported NFC-enabled phone against it. Once the phone disconnects, the SSD locks automatically to prevent unauthorized access.

Lexar has equipped the drive with a self-developed controller and TLC NAND flash memory. The TouchLock supports sequential read speeds of up to 450MB/s and write speeds of up to 420MB/s. Sharge has introduced the Disk Pro, a compact portable SSD hub that integrates data storage, a multi-port expansion dock, and an active cooling system. The company calls it the world’s first all-in-one portable SSD, and it is now available for crowdfunding on Kickstarter.

The Disk Pro features a built-in TLC flash drive with up to 4TB of storage, paired with a USB hub that includes USB-C, USB-A (3.0 and 2.0), and HDMI 2.1 ports. It supports up to 10Gbps transfer speeds and can deliver 4K video at 144Hz or 8K at 30Hz through its HDMI port. The device also offers 100W power delivery input and 80W output, enabling simultaneous charging and data transfer.

Sharge tested the Disk Pro across over 800 devices and claims full compatibility with all major platforms released in the past three years. OTA software updates will be available to maintain compatibility with future devices.

Ever run out of storage on your phone or wished your laptop had more space without paying extra for a higher-capacity model? A new materials breakthrough suggests that future devices could hold far more data than today’s NAND flash storage allow — all in the same space.

A research group led by Professor Yoichi Murakami at the Institute of Science Tokyo, has developed a covalent organic framework (COF) structure that uses tiny “molecular rotors” to store information. Their findings were published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and highlighted by Notebookcheck.

Unlike today’s semiconductor-based memory, this COF crystal is designed with ultra-low density, giving the molecular rotors enough space to spin and hold orientation. Each rotor acts like a switchable bit, potentially serving as the building block for non-volatile memory such as ROM.

To be useful, these rotors had to meet four conditions: respond to an electric field, keep their position stable at room temperature, rotate without interference, and withstand high temperatures.

According to the researchers, the material checks all four boxes. The rotors remain stable at everyday conditions, can endure up to 150°C, and the overall framework doesn’t break down until close to 400°C. Data orientation can also be switched reliably under strong electric fields or when heated above 200°C.

This is the first time such performance has been achieved with a COF material, addressing a long-standing obstacle in molecular memory research. While practical storage devices based on the technology are still some years away, the approach could eventually allow far denser storage than is possible today.

If developed further, molecular rotor memory could make it possible to fit vastly more data into smaller chips—potentially impacting everything from smartphones and wearables to IoT devices.

Samsung has launched the 8TB version of its 9100 Pro PCIe 5.0 solid-state drive in both global and Chinese markets. The SSD is now up for pre-order on JD.com at 6,399 yuan, while the global version with heatsink is priced at $1,019.99. The 9100 Pro series was already available worldwide in configurations up to 4TB, and the 8TB model now extends the lineup.

Samsung 9100 Pro Specifications

The Samsung 9100 Pro comes in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB models. It delivers sequential read speeds of up to 14,800 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 13,400 MB/s. The 1TB and 2TB drives reach 14,700 MB/s reads, while the 4TB and 8TB versions hit the peak 14,800 MB/s. On writes, the 1TB version reaches 13,300 MB/s, and the rest of the lineup achieves 13,400 MB/s. Samsung says performance has improved by nearly 99 percent compared to the 990 Pro.

Random performance is equally strong. The 1TB and 2TB models support random reads of up to 1,850K IOPS, while the 4TB and 8TB models go up to 2,200K IOPS. All capacities deliver random writes of up to 2,600K IOPS, making the drives suitable for heavy workloads such as AI processing, video editing, and large-scale gaming.

The 9100 Pro uses the standard M.2 2280 form factor and supports PCIe 5.0 x4 with NVMe 2.0. It measures 80.15 × 22.15 × 2.38mm and weighs under 10 grams. Samsung equips the SSD with V-NAND TLC flash memory and DRAM cache that scales with storage size: 1GB on the 1TB model, 2GB on 2TB, 4GB on 4TB, and 8GB on the 8TB flagship.

Samsung rates the 9100 Pro SSD lineup for durability at 600 TBW for the 1TB model, 1200 TBW for 2TB, 2400 TBW for 4TB, and 4800 TBW for the 8TB version. Each drive comes with a five-year limited warranty. The SSDs support Samsung’s Magician software, which provides firmware updates, health monitoring, and secure data migration.

For thermal control, Samsung equips nickel-coated controllers and heat spreader labels. The new 5nm controller design also improves power efficiency by up to 49 percent compared to the previous 990 Pro.

The T9 Portable SSD is the latest entry in the South Korean tech giant’s T-series of Portable Solid State Drives. It follows the design language of the previous T7 Shield model, which was launched last year. So the T9 Portable SSD also comes with curved lines and a carbon pattern texture, which combines style and durability. This model can serve a drop from heights of up to 3 meters.
