The new panel is an OLED panel that can be stretched, which could be the next step display technology might take in the near future similar to how foldable panels became more accessible.

The South Korean tech giant’s display unit demonstrated the new stretchable OLED panel in the tech expo. While this isn’t the first time we have seen a stretchable display, but Samsung showcasing its progress in the technology also implies of it eventually making its way to the mass consumer market in the future. The world’s largest smartphone maker even shared a video that showcased the 13 inch OLED panel in the Global Tech Korea event.

Looking at this video, we can observe lava being displayed on the screen while the panel itself is stretched outwards through a mechanism. As per SamMobile, this element of the display that quite literally adds another dimension to the 2D surface of a screen. At the moment, the practicality for this technology for consumer electronic products like smartphones is currently unknown. Although, Samsung develops various types of displays that could be fit a better fit for this technology. For example, largest LED videoboards and digital waterfalls could use this new stretchable display.

According to the company’s official Newsroom, researchers at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) have just developed a stretchable OLED display that users can put on their wrists. This device would offer fitness tracking features to the user. It even features an integrated PPG heart rate sensor, which the South Korean tech giant calls the “stretchable electronic skin form factor.” The SAIT researchers have tested the device by having it attached to the inner wrist near the radial artery.

In the tests, it was found that the movement of the wrists did not deteriorate the display. Furthermore, it was also found that the stretchable display remained reliable with skin elongation of up to 30 percent during the tests. The sensors and the OLED panel were also durable enough to continue working stably even after 1,000 stretches. SAIT researchers managed to “modify the composition and structure of elastomer, a polymer compound with high elasticity and resilience and used existing semiconductor manufacturing processes to apply it to the substrates of stretchable OLED displays and optical blood-flow sensors.”

The smartphone maker claims that this is a first for the industry and added that the patch will feel like a part of the user’s skin. Additionally, it would even measure biometric data while sleeping or exercising. Principal researcher Youngjun Yun added that “The technology can also be expanded to use in wearable healthcare products for adults, children, and infants, as well as patients with certain diseases.” Unfortunately, this futuristic device is still in the early stages of development and the company has yet to announce when it might launch commercially.

However, experts on the matter have stated that this type of screen will be built from technology that is fundamentally different to foldable and rollable panels and will even be more difficult to make.

According to TheElec report, stretchable display will require elastic substrates and circuits. These components will also have to endure the pressure from three axes, as per Soonchunhyang University professor Moon Dae-gyu. Furthermore, displays that are capable of stretching without distorting the screen is considered “superior” to both foldable panels and rollable displays. To put things simply, foldable and rollable panels only receive pressure from just a single axis, but stretchable screens would have to face pressure from x-axis, y-axis and z-axis.

Additionally, the stress on the display will also be proportional to how long it stretches and the strain on it. On the other hand, the stress will be inversely proportional to the curvature radius of the screen, with small curvature radius causing higher degrees of stress on the panel. These strains could also cause the display to get creases and cracks on the screen. meaning, a stretchable display would have to be flexible, reliable, durable and usable.

This would also require the manufacturers to solve any issues related to the substrates and drivers, and also any problems with the pixel must also be resolved together, as per the professor. He further added that it is impossible to stretch ceramic materials. Meaning, a new material would have to be used to make the needed stretchable substrate. On top of this, the TFT and OLED layer would be added that include stretchable circuits.

The South Korean tech giant made the announcement after it was tasked to develop the futuristic technology for a national R&D project. This project will be a cooperative effort with over 20 companies, institutions, and universities. The goal for LG Display is to develop a display product that can be stretched by up to 20 percent. In other words, we may soon see more robust displays that can be stretched and folded in the near future.
