Subaru has just announced its first electric vehicle, which is the new Solterra. It will be making a debut in the Japanese market, while its US variant won’t be released till next week.

The Japanese carmaker announced the Solterra earlier this week in its home country, but will also be releasing the vehicle in America as well. It is the brand’s first production electric vehicle and is a twin of the Toyota BZ4X that is already in production. Although, the Solterra features a slightly more traditional design styling compared to the Toyota model. The front end sports a hexagonal black trim piece that resembles a front grille, but the inside reveal its just a body color panel.

Furthermore, the Solterra features rear steering wheel while the cabin offers a large center touchscreen along with a number of haptic buttons and a low dashboard, with the interiors feature a orange-ish color scheme. Under the hood, a 71.4 kilowatt hour battery pack powers either the one or two electric motors, depending on whether you go for the front or all wheel drive variant. Subaru claims tha tthe front wheel drive Solterra offers a range of 330 miles on a single full charge while the four wheel drive variant will offer 285 miles.

Notably, the Solterra supports DC fast charging speeds of up to 150 kW, which lets it charge the EV to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. It also houses a heat pump that reduces losses in driving range in cold weather and when the heated seats or steering wheel is in use. The Solterra will even offer buyers a panoramic glass sunroof or a metal roof with integrated solar panels. Other features include support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Subaru’s first fully automated parking assist system, support for smartphone as a key, up to 20 inch wheel sizes, and adaptive LED lights. The EV is expected to go on global sales sometime in mid 2022.
