US-based auctioning firm Heritage Auctions have sold a sealed Super Mario 64 game at a record-setting cost of $1.56 million, which eclipsed the previous records recently set for Nintendo’s iconic games that held sway many years back.

In factory mint condition, the game was obviously seen as a collector’s item, looking at the seeming scramble for it during the auction sales. The iconic Nintendo games that defined the gaming space in years gone by have commanded massive bids during auctions this year. Some of the Nintendo N64 games that have grossed huge offers at auctions are Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy III, and Super Mario Bros.

The Case Fresh tag for the auctioned game means that it was excellently preserved in virtually the same condition when it left the factory. Nintendo has been very successful with the N64 console, satisfying the demand of millions of gamers who reveled in the pure energy and entertainment provided by the product when it held sway on the gaming space.

The game auctioneer, Heritage Auctions said that the boxed game had a rating of 9.8 A++ on the Wata Scale for Sealed items, and this translates into an almost perfect condition for the auctioned item.

The Legend of Zelda grossed $870,000 in an auction sale recently before its record was eclipsed by the current Super Mario 64 at over 1.5 million dollars. The Super Mario Bros also got a final bid of $660,000, as the highest record before the Legend of Zelda.

The person’s identity that paid for the record amount for the Super Mario game was not revealed. Whether more of the Nintendo classics could gross higher auction amounts than the Super Mario 64 remains in the realm of speculations.
