The news arrives from a Weibo post (a Chinese microblogging website) shared by Lin Lin, the marketing director of consumer notebook products in China. According to the Chinese consumer electronic maker’s executive, the brand is set to launch new notebooks with 12th gen Intel Core processors in 2022. He added that this was possible as the supply chain has finally improved significantly in recent times. Although, he did stated that the supply of certain notebook models will still be limited.

In other words, we do not know which exact models won’t suffer from a shortage in components. However, we can expect a number of PCs from its gaming laptops and lightweight laptops hitting the shelves with Team Blue’s latest 12th Gen Core processors. Recently, the company had launched a new YOGA Duet 2021 2 in 1 Windows 11 laptop, which had been out of stock for a long time. So, it appears that the supply chain is indeed improving.

Unfortunately, the senior official refrained from revealing any other details regarding these upcoming laptops. So we have no way of knowing which specs and features they might ship with. So stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates if the company teases the new laptops or any official announcements are shared.

Earlier today (7th January 2020), the chipmaker told Yicai that as a global smartphone chipset supplier, MediaTek aims to cooperate with various smartphone OEMs and vendors and will seek to bring its leading technology to its customers and consumers across the globe. The company said that “At present, Honor is a newly established independent company, and we are evaluating the current situation.”

This also arrives amid reports surfacing of Honor already working with ODM manufacturers for its upcoming products, right after its independence from Huawei. These rumored devices will apparently run with MediaTek’s latest chipsets, although, the company has yet to respond to this matter. The report also claims that the company is expected to launch MediaTek powered Honor smartphones by mid 2021.

Just yesterday, it was reported that Qualcomm and Honor are cooperating to resume the chip supply. The American chipmaker will now be able to supply Honor as the latter is not in the US Entity list and no longer falls under Huawei. However, the report also claimed that a large supply of chips will have to wait till at least the second quarter of 2021. As per a research report, the resumption in supply would grow MediaTek’s (chip) and Honor’s (smartphones) shipments in China and overseas market, but the former is still evaluating the brand’s performance in both areas.

In the third quarter of this year, 113 million smartphones with OLED displays were shipped, which is down by 17.9 percent from 2019. In the fourth quarter, a similar result is expected, as per UBI Research CEO Choong Hoon Yi.

According to TheElec report, there was one positive factor despite the overall decline as Apple shifted production of its latest iPhone lineup to include LED panels. In this year, around 50 percent of all iPhones will use OLED panels, and the number is only expected to rise to 75 percent by 2021 and 100 percent by 2022. The report also states that it previously believed that COVID-19 will have Apple only ship 180 million iPhone units in 2020, but this number has since increased to 220 million as the latest iPhone 12 is seeing healthy demand, with the Cupertino based giant seemingly overcoming the pandemic.

On the other hand, Huawei’s smartphone business is in decline and is expected to negatively affect the smartphone OLED market. In the second quarter of 2020, the Chinese tech giant accounted for 53.4 percent of all OLED smartphones in China, having a higher share than its competitors Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi combined. However, sources close to the matter have stated that the company is only expected to ship 50 million smartphone units in 2021.

According to a DigiTimes report, sources from Taiwan’s PCB supply chain have revealed that Chinese smartphone manufacturers are more aggressively stocking up and placing orders than compared to the first half of 2020. Furthermore, the sources believe that this trend will last till the first quarter of 2021. At the moment, Xiaomi has been particularly pulling in the highest volume of PCB shipments among other brands like Vivo and Oppo.

These three brands are the major rivals of Huawei in their home country, China. Previously, we had reported on Xiaomi reporting a major growth of nearly 35 percent in revenue in the third quarter of this year, with a bump in smartphone shipments as well. This also includes in overseas market and is expecting the positive growth to continue for a bit as it is building up its inventory.

Additionally, it is estimated that Xiaomi handset orders will exceed 100 million units during the second half of 2020 to first quarter of 2021. Similarly, Oppo and Vivo will also reach around 90 million and 70 million handset shipments respectively during the same period. On the other hand, Huawei is expected to have its market share drop to a third of its current standing in 2021. Although, these are still projections based on current situation and it is still too early to make any solid statements at the moment. So stay tuned for more updates regarding the matter.

But now, a new report suggests that the US is trying to persuade the chipmaker to reduce its supply to Huawei.

According to a CSLA report, the US is trying to hamper Huawei’s operations again by hindering its chip supply. Furthermore, it is also being reported that Qualcomm might also be planning on supplying the smartphone manufacturer. Apparently, Qualcomm is currently in talks with the US government to attain a license to supply Huawei with its chips and may receive it as early as mid July.

Unfortunately, the news is still unconfirmed, so take it with a pinch of salt for now. When asked about this report, MediaTek denied being persuaded by the US and called the news groundless. Although, we will have to wait and see if Qualcomm is also stepping up to supply Huawei with 5G chips in the near future, but, that also depends on whether or not it receives a license from the US government.

Now, MediaTek has officially denied a few of these claims, which had the company circumventing US regulations.

For those unaware, a Japanese news reporting agency recently claimed that MediaTek will be supplying Huawei with TSMC chips indirectly. The chipmaker would’ve bought the chips from TSMC and rebranded them as their own before selling them to Huawei. This has now been officially denied by MediaTek that also offered clarification regarding the matter.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei is rumored to replace US equipment from South Korean semiconductor manufacturers

According to a spokesperson, MediaTek will not be violating any laws or bypassing regulations to supply Huawei with TSMC chips. The report has been confirmed to be false and that the chipmaker will follow relevant global trade laws and regulations. In other words, the company will not be making a special case for Huawei or circumventing policies for any of its customers.

While the chip manufacturer will not be buying TSMC chips for the Chinese smartphone vendor, it is expected to become its biggest mobile processor supplier. At the moment, Huawei is negotiating with MediaTek for 5G chipsets. The HiSilicon Kirin processors were present in 80 percent of Huawei’s handsets but this may soon change drastically as the company could adopt Dimensity 5G chips in the near future. Various reports have again claimed special deals or massive orders being placed, although, none have been confirmed so far.

According to sources, the move was made by the Chinese tech giant to safeguard its operations against US sanctions.

Sources revealed that the ample reserves were primarily for server grade processors made by Intel and Xilinx for programable chipsets. These processors are apparently the ‘most essential components’ that Huawei uses for its base stations and emerging cloud business. For those unaware, the Chinese vendor is a major player in the 5G networking infrastructure and equipment industry and is also developing cloud based services, similar to Amazon.

The recent sanctions from the US government had cut off the chip supply to Huawei, but it seems that the company had already prepared in advance. It currently has an inventory that will last for 1.5 or up to 2 years. However, analysts have claimed that the reliance on stockpiled chips could end up hindering the company’s competitiveness.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei MatePad Pro 5G launched in China, starts at ¥5299 (~$747)

Huawei had recently revealed that it had spent 167.7 billion Yuan ($23.45 billion) in stockpiling chipsets, components, and more in 2019, which is a significant jump of 73 percent from 2018. In particular, it seems that Huawei was more focused on building reserves for programmable chips from Xilinx, since it’s difficult to replace the processors at the moment, even from its own chip designer, HiSilicon.

Similarly, the company has also increased stocks for memory components like NAND and DRAM from Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron, and Kioxia during the same period. So, judging by how this looks, it would seem that Huawei is preparing for a battle of attrition against the US government. The impacts of the new US regulations will likely impact the Chinese OEMs operations, but only time will tell.

In other words, the list revealed the manufacturers behind its crucial components are mostly based domestically, in China.
According to the leaked list, the Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ use camera modules from Sony, Largan, Sunny Optical, OFILM, LuxVision, Q Technology, and Crystal Optech. Similarly, the fingerprint scanner is built by Goodix Technology with parts from OFILM, and Q Technology. The display touch panel and glass are provided by Lens Technology and Beil Crystal.

On 27th March, Yuan Feng, the CEO of BOE, had revealed that both the flagship models feature BOE curved displays.

A Chinese tech reporting portal, XYZone had also published a teardown video of their own. This breakdown revealed that most core components were sourced from China (primarily Huawei’s HiSilicon chipset and other technologies), Taiwan, South Korea, and even Japan. Although a small portion was also sourced from American companies like Skyworks, Qorvo, and Qualcomm for the RF fronts.

According to analysts, Huawei already has pre-existing stocks for various components. This was done prior to its US ban that disallowed it from working with US based companies. However, from its inventory, it seems that the company still has enough parts for the next year at the very least, by then the company would’ve also come up with viable replacements or through other proprietary development.

Whatever the reason, the Smartisan official website is now showing all their smartphones as currently unavailable for purchase.

To make it worse, on the mobile phone sales page of the hammer official website, the nut Pro 2 mobile phone has been removed with no prior notice. And the remaining four mobile phones: the Nut Pro 2S, the Nut Pro 2 special edition, the Nut R1 and the Nut 3 all display the “arrival notice”. In a nutshell, you won’t be able to take home a Smartisan mobile from their official site as of now. Perhaps, we don’t know how long it’d stay as such.

It’s found that, in addition to the official website of Hammer Technology, Smartisan mobile is experiencing supply shortage in Jingdong, Tmall, and Suning e-commerce platforms too. So, it’s more likely that the supply channel of Hammer Technology indeed is going through some problems.

Till now, there is no response from Smartisan officials regarding the sudden anomaly. Let’s hope they’d acknowledge the issue soon. Well, for those who’re looking to purchase a smartphone all we’ve to say is wait until the stocks are back to normal.
