After releasing a lot of interesting notebooks, the company came up with a new convertible laptop: the 2021 version of the Huawei MateBook E. It has been a long time since the Chinese giant released a 2-in-1 laptop and now this device lets Huawei compete directly with Microsoft and Apple. But does the Huawei MateBook E stand a chance against the best convertible laptops released by Microsoft and Apple? This comparison between Huawei MateBook E, Microsoft Surface Pro 8, and Apple iPad Pro M1 12.9 will help you to find out.

Design

The design is definitely a key feature of these tablets. All of them are very thin, lightweight, and well-built. They also come with a very high screen to body ratio, thanks to narrow bezels around the display. The most amazing tablet in terms of build quality seems to be the Apple iPad Pro M1 with an incredibly thin body: just 6.4 mm. It is entirely made of aluminum with the exception of scratch-resistant and oleophobic front glass, and despite it having a wide display, it weighs just 682 grams.

Display

Besides providing the most attractive design, the Apple iPad Pro M1 is also equipped with the most advanced display. It is a Liquid Retina XDR with mini-LED backlighting, a 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10 certification, and Dolby Vision. But unlike the Huawei MateBook E, it does not come with an OLED display, which means you can get deeper blacks with the Huawei tablet and brilliant colors, as well as 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage. Microsoft Surface Pro 8 and iPad Pro M1 rely on facial recognition for authentication, while the Huawei MateBook E has a fingerprint reader placed on the power key.

Hardware/Software

Apple iPad Pro M1 is the fastest and most reactive tablet thanks to the iPadOS operating system and the new Apple M1 processor. But all of these tablets are flagships, so you won’t notice a big difference. The Huawei MatePad E and the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 run Windows 11, which means you can use more professional software for productivity and more, and you can also play advanced PC games. Between Huawei MateBook E and Microsoft Surface Pro 8, the latter is superior due to a better processor and higher-end memory configurations including up to 32 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of SSD internal storage.

Camera

If you are looking for the most advanced camera, then the iPad Pro M1 is your best choice. It has a 12 MP main camera, a 10 MP ultrawide sensor, and a TOF 3D LiDAR scanner for AR appliances, as well as a great 12 MP front camera. It is the only tablet of the trio to sport multiple cameras on the rear side and it has better sensors.

Battery

The battery life provided by the iPad Pro M1 is actually longer in a lot of scenarios thanks to iPadOS and the Apple M1 chip. With the Huawei MateBook E, you get a faster-charging technology with 65W power.

Price

The prices of these tablets vary depending on the market. The iPad Pro M1 costs €1200 in Europe, Microsoft Surface Pro 8 starts from $1099 in the U.S. and Huawei MateBook E starts from $940 in China, which is currently the only market in which it is available. If you do not mind the most advanced productivity software and gaming, then the iPad Pro M1 is actually a better tablet. But if an advanced OS like Windows 11 is important to you, then you should go for the Surface Pro 8. On the paper, the MateBook E is inferior to the Surface Pro 8, but it has a higher value for money.

The teaser image for the event on Microsoft’s website shows a silhouette of a computer that looks like the Surface Pro 7. The device has a kickstand and a keyboard that appears to be detachable. Microsoft already launched a Surface Pro computer earlier this year, however, the Surface Pro 7 Plus was specifically made for businesses and schools. So there is a chance this new Surface Pro may be the true successor to the Surface Pro 7 which is expected to launch as the Surface Pro 8.

Microsoft is also expected to announce a high-end laptop that may arrive as the Surface Book 4 or Surface Laptop Pro or even Surface Laptop Studio according to Windows Central. Unlike previous models of the Surface Book, this one may not have a detachable display that allows it to double as a tablet. All of the new computers should run the new Windows 11 out of the box.

Another major announcement is the Surface Duo 2, Microsoft’s second-gen dual-display device. A Geekbench listing revealed last week that the new dual-screen phone will have a Snapdragon 888 processor powering it. This should bring a significant upgrade in performance compared to the Snapdragon 855 chip inside the first-gen model. It has also been reported that it will get an improved launcher.

Other details revealed by the benchmark site are the operating system and the RAM. Microsoft will ship it with Android 11 and it will have 8GB of RAM. We don’t know if there will be other configurations available but it is nice to know that there is more RAM this year.

The Surface launch event is slated to begin at 11 AM ET.

We have already heard reports of the Surface Pro 8 featuring 11th Gen Intel Core processors with Iris Xe graphics or even with the AMD Renoir platform. Although, the upgrade that Microsoft is finally addressing with the upcoming notebook is the issue of the base model arriving with a Core i3 processor and only 4GB of RAM, which is less than what most smartphones arrive with. But as per a new WindowsLatest (via MSPowerUser) report, the company will be offering the Surface Pro 8 with at least 8GB of RAM.

UP NEXT: Poll of The Week: Do you use a game controller or touch controls for mobile gaming?

At the moment, the Surface Pro 7 only arrived with just 4GB of RAM in the base model and the 8GB RAM variant only arrived with Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Although, the report also suggests that the 4GB model might still be available. In other words, the 8GB variant for the Core i3 might just be a paid upgrade on the lowe variant. This would mean that the Surface Pro 8 could arrive in:

Core i3, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD / Core i3, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD.

Core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD or 256GB SSD.

Core i7, 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD, 512 GB SSD or 1TB SSD storage.

Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report, so take this news with a pinch of salt for now. Currently, it is also unknown if Surface Laptop 4 and Surface Pro 8 are expected to launch in January 2021. So we might find out more details soon. Stay tuned for more, as we will be providing more updates when additional information is available.

According to an exclusive report by winfuture.de, the upcoming Microsoft Surface Pro 8 tablet will have a Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + LTE version. You can take a look at the processor variants and their RAM, storage configurations respectively below:

Wi-Fi + LTE, i5 version

LTE i5 8GB/128GB

LTE i5 8GB/256GB

LTE i5 16GB/256GB

Wi-Fi only, i5 version

i5 8GB/128GB

i5 8GB/256GB

i5 16GB/256GB

Wi-Fi only, i7 version

i7 16GB/ 256GB

i7 16GB/ 512GB

i7 16GB/1TB

i7 32GB/1TB

Note: Here i5, i7 denote Intel® Core multi-core processors; According to the report, it is likely to be the latest 11th gen processors. Storage mentioned – SSD.

That said, the report says the Surface 8 Pro, apart from the above different variants, will include Surface Pen and the Surface Type Cover. Besides, as you can see above, the i7 models reportedly don’t have the LTE version. As for colors, the new tablet will likely have a Black, and Platinum Gray options.

EDITOR’S PICK: Microsoft to launch Xbox Series X in China in 2021 after getting certified

However, the LTE version doesn’t reportedly come in the Black color. And as the above names suggest, LTE will maximum support network up to 4G. This means 5G enthusiasts will have to wait a bit considering it isn’t officially rolled out in many countries. Still, as per the report, the tablet in Europe will have a wireless module, and antennas integrated directly from the factory.

The LTE version will have a maximum of 16GB RAM, while the Wi-Fi version has up to 32GB memory. Also, the previous leak indicates that the RAM would be clocked at 4267MHz. Although i7 users have limited scope with Wi-Fi only version, report says the it will be a high-end model with Core i7-1165G7 quad-core CPU, Max. 32GB RAM, and 1TB USD at €3000 ($3,650).

Further, the Surface Pro 8 will reportedly include a 12.3-inch FHD+ display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a 2736 x 1824 resolution. The new tablet will launch alongside the new Surface Laptops(likely 4th Gen Surface Laptop) in early 2021. While the pricing is still a mystery, don’t be surprised if Microsoft manages to also launch an AMD version with very little change from the outside.

Instead, the Redmond-based company announced the Surface Laptop Go, an affordable model for the series. Now, images believed to be of the Surface Laptop 4 and the Surface Pro 8 have surfaced on the web along with details about when they will arrive.

The photos were posted on Twitter by the user that goes by “cozyplanes” (@cozyplanes) and they appear to be from the FCC. The Surface Laptop 4 is shown in black and we only get a top view of the device. The image of the Surface Pro 8 also doesn’t give us much to see.

#Surface EXCLUSIVE

Nevertheless, the design for both devices seem not to be too different from that of their predecessors, and fans of the series may not be pleased with that. A common complaint the Surface Pro 7 got was its unchanged design from that of previous generations which makes it more surprising that Microsoft is once again going with the same old look for the Surface Pro 8. Hopefully, it pacifies buyers with new colors.

The tweet also reveals the model numbers for the devices and also mentions an LTE version of the Surface Pro 8 will be announced. The Surface Pro 7 didn’t have an LTE version, so those who skipped it because of that can look forward to the Pro 8.

With respect to specs, Windows Central says that the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop 8 should come with 11th-gen Intel processors with Intel Xe graphics. There are also unconfirmed reports of an AMD version of the Surface Laptop 4. The time to market for the two devices is put at mid-January and not until October when the series usually launches.

According to an MSPowerUser report, the prototype device was barely distinguishable from the company’s previously launched Surface Pro 7. Although, the similarities were mostly in design as the internals received a refresh, with the new Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor, along with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD storage. The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 also lacks a Thunderbolt 3 port but houses a larger 50,030mWh battery in comparison to the 45,000mWh on the Surface Pro 7.

While the device is still a prototype engineering sample and the company would likely still makes tweaks in its design and other aspects, it seems highly unlikely that the upcoming generation of Surface Pro will tablet will feature a new bezel less design on the front. However, since this is just a prototype one should take the specs and design with a pinch of salt for now, and wait for more officially announced details that should arrive soon. So stay tuned for more updates.
