The Microsoft Surface Pro X is a flagship tablet that combines the portability of a tablet with the functionality of a laptop. It is powered by an Arm processor, which allows for impressive battery life and excellent performance. The Surface Pro X features a sleek and lightweight design, with a detachable keyboard and a high-resolution touchscreen display. It runs on Windows 10 or Windows 11, offering a seamless user experience and compatibility with a wide range of software and applications. Surface Pro X owners have encountered a frustrating problem this week as the cameras on their devices suddenly ceased to function. Numerous Reddit users and Microsoft support forum posters have reported that reinstalling drivers did not resolve the issue.

The Bug is probably because of an Expired Security Certificate in Windows

The Verge, investigating the matter, confirmed the problem on a Surface Pro X unit. When attempting to use the camera app, Windows displayed a discouraging “0xA00F4271<MediaCaptureFailedEvent> (0x80004005)” error message. Although the cause of the camera malfunction remains unclear, a temporary workaround has been discovered that suggests an expired security certificate in Windows may be to blame.

Surface Pro X owners noticed that rolling back the system date to May 22nd restored camera functionality. However, it is important to note that altering the system date could lead to authentication issues with specific websites and services. Consequently, this is merely a stopgap solution until Microsoft addresses the underlying problem.

Interestingly, these camera problems have emerged amidst Microsoft’s Build developers conference. The company also showcased enhancements for Windows 11 and unveiled its new AI-powered Copilot assistant at the same event. Furthermore, Microsoft has discussed its plans to enhance ARM-powered AI experiences, indicating a continued commitment to addressing user concerns.

As Surface Pro X owners eagerly await a permanent fix, it is evident that Microsoft remains dedicated to delivering optimal performance and reliability to its customers.

According to one user who posted on the Microsoft forum last year, “I am having to deal with this issue quite frequently. Sometimes the stylus jumps around for more than 5mm, which makes it extremely annoying to work with. The service staff have been unable to identify the issues despite filing multiple complaints. The guys have been very cooperative, even sending me a replacement unit for other issues in the past. Unfortunately, the problems appeared in the new unit too”.

While another user wrote, “Surface Pro 7 user here. Facing the exact issues with the staircase pressure curve when touching the display simultaneously with the stylus and bare skin. Had this problem since Day 1. The issue persists on battery power and when connected directly to the power source. This is a major turnoff. Hope Microsoft comes up with a solution soon”. Judging by these reports, it seems as though the problem could be fixed with a software update. However, Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the issue.

The company is, however, dealing with the other problem quite vigorously. According to official communication, company representatives stated, “a few Surface Laptop customers have contacted Microsoft support with complaints regarding mysterious cracks appearing through the display with no fault on their part. We are investigating the claims and evaluating the probable reasons that could lead to such an outcome”.

Although this is not the first time a major manufacturer is investigating a design flaw. It presents the perfect opportunity for the company to highlight the key features of the laptop’s design. Starting with how easy it is to replace components in general. Microsoft uses screws at easily accessible joints, magnets at strategic positions, and a few pop connectors for ribbons that can easily be replaced.

Although Microsoft is not going to hand out replacement screens and a screwdriver to every customer complaining of a cracked display. The company is hunting for reasons why such a problem might arise. We might encounter an official solution addressing the issue soon.

Next to the also just released Surface Pro 7, you could argue that this is the true new flagship.

The Surface Pro X offers key features of the Surface Pro 7 alongside other extras that make it one of the most interesting 2-in-1s to come to the market in 2019. Design-wise, the Surface Pro X is the thinnest of the newly announced Surface range at 5.3mm and weighs only 762g, which is impressive when you consider some of the advanced features on offer.

The screen has been expanded from a 12-inch panel on the old Surface Pro to a 13-inch display, which the company says offers the thinnest bezels on any 2-in-1 laptop. It boasts a resolution of 2880×1920 resolution, giving it 267ppi. There’s a new Surface Slim Pen nestled in the keyboard, and there’s even wireless charging onboard. The big kicker is that the Surface Pro X features two USB-C ports over the Surface Pro 7’s single port.

EDITOR’S PICK: Surface Laptop 3 launched: brings new 15” size with Ryzen Surface Edition processor

The big new thing however has to be the aforementioned Surface SQ1 processor. Co-designed by Microsoft and Qualcomm, it’s a 7W chipset – compared to 2W of most ARM processors – and offers 2 teraflops of power. Microsoft claims that the Surface Pro X provides 3x more power per watt than the Surface Pro 6.

Alongside the SQ1 is an AI accelerator that brings impressive levels of computational power to the hybrid. While it’s hard to say exactly what it’ll be used for, Microsoft gave the example of being able to correct eye contact during video calls. It’s a rather impressive feat, especially considering that it uses 50x less power than a standard GPU.

The biggest question remains whether the SQ1 will be able to offer comparable power to a traditional x86 processor, though. The answer to that question is what will eventually determine how well the Surface Pro X does on the market. Excitingly, the device is already available for preorder today, with a launch date of November 5 for the price of $999.
