It is also the first smartphone in the world to use a pressure sensitive in-display fingerprint scanner. Reports have revealed that the scanner is Synaptics Clear ID FS9500.

The Clear ID FS9500 was announced in December by Synaptics Inc. When it was announced, it was reported that Synaptics was working with one of the top five smartphone manufacturers. Synaptics itself later revealed that it was shipping the scanners to Vivo. That scanner is what is used in the Vivo X21 UD.

Although Vivo is the first manufacturer in the world to release a phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner, Xiaomi’s Mi 8 EE has an edge over it. Apart from the Synaptics scanner, it also has a dedicated pressure-sensitive sensor that makes unlocking faster.

The sensor has a high sensitivity that immediately detects when the finger is placed on the display and “wakes the main scanner up”. This allows the Mi 8 EE unlock faster than the Vivo X21 UD even though they both use Synaptics Clear ID FS9500 sensor.

The Mi 8 Explorer Edition not only has a faster scanner, it is also the first Android phone with 3D face unlock. This is more secure than that found in other Android phones.

As speculated, the model is a new Vivo smartphone whose name is yet to be disclosed but which looks like a modified X20 Plus.

Indeed, the Vivo smartphone looks like the X20 Plus but with the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor found on the X20 missing completely. Instead, the device comes with a fingerprint module under the screen. The location of the fingerprint module seems to be lit-up with the fingerprint icon displayed, perhaps for ease of identification. One major concern about this new technology is the fingerprint recognition speed but hands-on tests have shown that the response time is about 0.6s – 0.7 seconds. This is fast but a little bit slower than the regular fingerprint sensor we are used to. We believe the technology will be perfected as times goes on in order to increase the response time.

In addition, chances of false recognition are said to be one in 50,000. The technology has been tailored to also bring efficiency to other basic fingerprint identification needs. The tech giant hinted that the fingerprint technology has even reached the level where it can be adopted for fingerprint payment authentication on platforms like WeChat, AliPay etc. Vivo had indicated during the unveiling at CES 2018 that the in-display packing Vivo smartphone is currently in volume production and will go on sale this month.

And so it is: Vivo has just unveiled the first commercial phone in the world to feature a fingerprint scanner under the display. Unfortunately, the Chinese giant did not reveal the specs, the design and neither the name of its new phone, but we know for sure that the device is ready for mass production and it will be officially showcased soon.

According to the senior VP at Vivo (Alex Feng), the device will provide a more comfortable authentication experience and it will be officially announced early 2018. We might even see it at MWC 2018 that will be held in February. The in-display fingerprint technology unveiled by Synaptics only works with OLED displays, and indeed, the handset will feature an AMOLED display. The fingerprint scanner will be placed between the glass panel and the OLED panel: when the finger will touch the glass panel, the OLED panel will illuminate the finger and the small chip will process the beams of light emitted.

From what Synaptics has revealed, the new in-display fingerprint scanner that will be present on the Vivo phone will provide the same level of security as traditional fingerprint readers found on the actual smartphones in the market. On the other hand, the authentication process should be a bit slower. It is also worth mentioning that a fingerprint scanner cannot offer the same level of security of a well-made 3D facial recognition technology or iris scanner, which can recognize more unique elements in the face of the user.

So, do you prefer the comfort offered by an in-display fingerprint reader or the security of 3D facial recognition technologies?

In line with that, Vivo has officially announced that it will be showcasing a phone with a new fingerprint sensor technology at the event on 10th January.

Going by the teaser image released by the China-based smartphone manufacturer, it is clear that the company is planning to showcase a phone with under display fingerprint sensor technology.

With full-screen displays going mainstream, the demand for the fingerprint sensors embedded under display has intensified. For devices will full-screen display, the under display fingerprint sensor is believed to be the most convenient way to unlock devices, instead of a standalone sensor placed on the back side of the phone, or embedded on the home button.

Recently, Synaptics launched Clear ID FS9500 optical in-display fingerprint scanner for smartphones, marking a milestone in fingerprint sensor technology. The sensor can be used with wet, dry and cold fingerprints. It remains well-protected under the durable glass of the screen and is a water-resistant as well as scratch-resistant.

The Clear ID comes equipped with security features such as adaptive fingerprint template matching and verification as well as anti-spoofing technology. It is also integrated with ECC authentication and AES encryption. Synaptics has claimed that as many as 70 million units of these sensors will be available in the market in 2018.

Synaptics revealed that it is ready to mass produce optical in-display fingerprint sensors and announced that it is producing the same for a “top-five” smartphone vendor. While the company didn’t announce the name of the smartphone manufacturer it has tied-up with, some reports suggested that the company could be Vivo.

Vivo recently announced that it will be the first company to launch a smartphone with a fingerprint sensor embedded underneath the display in 2018. It revealed that the phone will come with Synaptic’s Clear ID but the name of the phone was not revealed.

Last week, Vivo X20 Plus UD received 3C certification. It is believed that UD in the phone’s name stands for Under Display, suggesting that the X20 Plus UD could be the first phone to come with under display fingerprint sensor. The phone is expected to pack similar specifications as the Vivo X20 Plus which comes with a 6.43-inch Infinity display with 18:9 aspect ratio, Snapdragon 660 processor, 4GB/6GB RAM and 3,905mAh battery.

Vivo is currently ranking among the top five smartphone vendors in the world. However, there is no confirmation on the name of the Vivo phone that will be featuring the in-display fingerprint scanner by Synaptics. The company is aiming to ship around 70 million units of Clear ID sensor which suggests that even other smartphone vendors are likely to adopt this new biometric recognition feature.

According to Forbes, pressing the button present on the right side of a pre-production Vivo phone wakes it and displays an illuminated fingerprint image at the bottom of the screen. Users can simply touch it to unlock the phone instantly. Synaptics has said that its Clear ID in-display fingerprint scanner is designed for bezel-less OLED infinity displays that are found in flagship smartphones such as Apple iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

There are various benefits of having an in-display fingerprint scanner. Reaching out to the rear-facing fingerprint reader is not always convenient when the phone is lying on kept on a table. Moreover, there is a risk of smudging the rear camera while accessing the rear fingerprint reader. Face scanning is also not very convenient as it requires users to lift the phone and look at it every time to unlock it. As said above, Clear ID allows users to unlock a phone with by simply touching the screen.

Since Clear ID is an optical scanner, it features a CMOS image sensor that has a thickness of less than 0.7mm. When a user touches the OLED screen that is embedded with Clear ID, the sensor scans the fingerprint and sends the information to the processor of the phone for verifying the match. The Clear ID sensor is well-protected from scratches and waterproof as it placed under the display glass. Also, it is equipped with many security features such as adaptive fingerprint template matching, anti-spoofing technology, ECC authentication and AES encryption.

It is a milestone achievement by the company as it will allow full screen design phones to feature the fingerprint sensor underneath the touchscreen display.

The arrival of full screen design trend in the mobile phone industry in this year have resulted in relocating the fingerprint scanner to the rear side of smartphones. Even though the fingerprint identification feature is considered very secure, Apple has axed the feature on the newly unveiled iPhone X. Instead of the Touch ID sensor, iPhone X features the all new Face ID facial recognition feature that users can use to unlock it or securely carry out transactions through Apple Pay.

Following Apple, Android smartphone OEMs have reportedly invested on facial recognition technology to bring face scanning features on forthcoming Android phones. However, Synaptics is of the view that the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and facial scanning technology are not very convenient. For instance, if the smartphone is placed on a table, users are required to lift the phone to reach out to the rear-facing fingerprint scanner or the bring the phone near to scan the face.

Clear ID by Synaptics

The Clear ID in-display fingerprint scanner by Synaptics offers the same kind of one-touch authentication that is available through conventional front/rear mounted fingerprint readers found on existing smartphones. Since it is placed under the display, it is a button-free solution. It can be used with wet, dry and cold fingerprints.

Since the Clear ID remains well-protected under the durable glass of the screen, it is a water-resistant and scratch-resistant technology. It is equipped with security features such as adaptive fingerprint template matching and verification as well as anti-spoofing technology. It is also integrated with ECC authentication and AES encryption.

Synaptics has also confirmed that the mass production of Clear ID has already begun in collaboration with a “top five” smartphone manufacturing firm. The press release by Synaptics has couple of references to “infinity display” which is the full screen technology used by Samsung on the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 phones. Hence, it is speculated that Synaptics could be working with the South Korean tech giant to make the feature available on a 2019 Galaxy flagship.

There is no confirmation on whether the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will be coming with in-display fingerprint sensor. Previous reports have revealed that the Galaxy Note 9 could be Samsung’s first phone to feature under screen fingerprint scanner.

Synaptics will be demonstrating the Clear ID fingerprint scanner at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2018. Qualcomm is also expected to unveil its under-display fingerprint scanner technology in Q1 2018.

The new sensors will be under the “FS4600 family of Natural ID”. They will be used in smartphones to provide high-performance and secure biometric authentication.

Manufacturers adopt various designs for their fingerprint scanners. We have seen square shaped scanners (Moto G4 Plus and Moto Z Play), pill shaped ones (Meizu M5 Note, Xiaomi Mi 5), circular ones (Redmi Note 4), and square scanners (Lenovo Vibe K4 Note). Synaptics says its new sensors can be adapted into any of these designs and in any position too.

Another new feature coming to the FS4600 family is that it can be placed under either glass, ceramic, or polymer coatings. It can also be assigned the function of two OD soft buttons and will support force sensing and swipe navigation. Security for the FS4600 will be provided by Synpatics’ SentryPoint security software.

The new platform is coming ahead of the CES 2017 and is said to use both fingerprint and facial recognition, thus allowing mobile devices to be unlocked in several ways, based on the user’s preference. Apart from the feature of unlocking the device, the platform also provides some level of security for financial transactions as well as unlocking of other sensitive information in the device because users will be required to go through two modes of authentication.

Read Also: Asus Could Beat Samsung & Xiaomi To Release The First Snapdragon 835 Flagship

One good thing about the system is that it features anti-spoof technology and uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to differentiate between the real owner of the device and any other imitation. So, it doesn’t only take note of the facial features but reflex actions like eye blinking and pattern of head movement in order to prevent spoofing or imitation.

Synaptics has hinted that it seeks to expand the platform to include additional biometric and security factors. The company also went on to introduce a fingerprint sensor technology which allows for scanning of the fingerprint through glass, thus opening up the potential for button-free display designs with embedded fingerprint recognition sensors. This isn’t new though as we’ve already got the Xiaomi Mi 5S with underglass ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

Since Synaptics sells its patents and inventions to smartphone and tablet makers, the new technology could find its way inside smartphones in the near future. As to when exactly, that we cannot say.

Known mainly for building the technology behind the touchpad on your notebook PC, the company also has its hand in other pies. The company recently announced its new under-glass fingerprint scanner which works in a similar way to Qualcomm’s Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner present in the Xiaomi Mi 5s.

Synaptics new optical fingerprint sensor called the Fs9100 can scan fingerprints correctly when embedded under cover glass that is at most 1mm thick. Since your finger isn’t touching the scanner directly, it won’t matter if it is wet. The scanner will also be able to last longer since it is protected from scratches.

The Synaptics FS9100 sensor like Qualcomm’s Ultrasonic scanner does not require cutouts but like Xiaomi demonstrated with the Mi 5s, you might still need a kind of groove to help guide users to the area the fingerprint scanner covers especially when they are using their phone in the dark.

Apple and Samsung are two of the biggest names when it comes to smartphones and based on leaks, their next flagships are rumored to ditch the home button which also serves as the fingerprint scanner. If that happens, they will be settling for a new type of fingerprint sensors that can be hidden under the display. While Apple is probably working on its own technology, we can’t rule out the fact that they may look towards Synaptics for the sensors they need since both companies have worked together in the past.

READ MORE: iPhone 8 to Feature Under-Glass Fingerprint Scanner Similar to Xiaomi Mi 5s’

Samsung on the other hand has gotten its supply of fingerprint sensors from Synaptics for a while now. If we are to compare the time of launch of the Galaxy S8 which is expected to be delayed, it should coincide with the time Synaptics says their new sensor will go into mass production. Which means the Galaxy S8 may be the first device to sport the new scanner.

Actually, Huawei’s newest flagship phone is the Huawei D3 (previously called “Jazz”). To be more precise, it is actually called the Mate 3 since it has been reported that Huawei merged the D series and Mate series. Previous reports stated that this phone sports a 6.1-inch touch screen and a built-in Kirin 920 octa-core processor (1.8GHz). However, according to the insider, Huawei hopes to take this phone to another level by improving safety settings by adding a fingerprint recognition feature.

Two versions of the Huawei Mate 3 will be released. Both will use a 6-inch touch screen but one will have 2K resolution while the other will have 1080p resolution. One version will also have 2GB RAM while the other will have 3GB RAM. Both will sport a 5mp/13mp camera and will use the Android 4.4.2 OS. Both support LTE 4G internet and will come with new apps from Huawei.
